My hands down all time favorite sushi. I've eaten sushi all over the world and at some of the most highly rated sushi restaurants (it's my favorite food) and somehow this little to-go place in landlocked chicago is still my favorite place. They have the perfect ratio of 'fillings' to rice -- just a thin layer of rice around the rolls so most of the flavor is the fish and whatever other fillings you like. I've sworn by the Spicy Salmon Special for over ten years, you have to try it if you like salmon and avocado. Also, the chicago fire roll is delicious. 1st time going to this location and it was definitely a great decision. Upon walking in you are greeted by everyone behind the counter. All drinks and other to go sushi was neatly placed and easy to locate. I ordered the party platter for 2-3 ppl. It was the special platter. Very aesthetically placed on the platter and the flavor matched presentation. Former Sea Ranch, now AO sushi is the best. The quality is at the top of the list in the area. Seriously, I have bought from this spot since 1995, and the attention to detail, selection, quality and service is unsurpassed. You can smell "the sea" when you open your selection at home for take out. Presentation is simple and pristine. Kudos to the super nice manager and all of the friendly staff, it is a pleasure to get fresh, quality sushi at a fair price, served with smiles where when you walk in you are welcomed. The restaurant hours of operation are very misleading. Though it indicates that it closes at 8pm, what it means is that the staff is planning to finish up and leave by then. The kitchen actually closes 30 minutes prior to the stated time, which infuriated us when we got there 25 minutes before closing time. Chairs were already on the tables, floor was being swept, and there was no food to be found in the kitchen. And this was on a Saturday. We were told to go to another restaurant or could purchase the remaining unsold items in the fridge. Needless to say we just went our way, and take their advice of going to another sushi place in the future. read more

Oh how I miss Sea Ranch! I now live on the East coast, and if I could pick one institution (restaurant, grocery, whatever) to be transplanted to where I am now, I would pick Sea Ranch. To appreciate Sea Ranch, you need a little context. One company, True World, distributes about 90% of the high-end sushi fish in the United States. If are eating at a sushi restaurant where dinners cost, say $50 or more, you are almost certainly eating fish from True World. Japonais would be an example of a Chicago restaurant of this type. Sea Ranch distributes True World fish at the retail level (and may in fact be owned by True World; I'm not sure). By making your own sushi, you can have the equivalent of a four-star, $100 restaurant sushi meal for a quarter of the price. There is no place like Sea Ranch anywhere on the East Coast as far as I can tell, even in New York where I spend a lot of my time. I actually called the local True World warehouse to ask them if there were any retail outfits nearby that they sold to, and I was told that they only had restaurant customers around here. I've tried making sushi from supposedly high-end fishmongers in Manhattan, such as Citarella, but it just isn't the same. I don't know if it's fish quality, cut selection, or something else, but the fish from Sea Ranch is just different. Anyway, bottom line Sea Ranch = amazing. read more

This one is another one of my obsessions...specifically for their SPICY CRAWFISH ROLL A.K.A spicy lobster roll. For what I consider a gourmet roll, the price of this is really cheap...only 7 bucks! They use a mixture of sweet mayo with chunks of crawfish and a touch of wasabi to add that pizzazz. For a carry-out sushi join, Sea Ranch is pretty great. They serve standard nigiri and maki (sorry, no white tiger rolls a la Tsunami) but it's fresh and inexpensive. In this case, simple = good. One roll I love is the spicy California crunch, which has tempura crunchies and a really unique pink (maybe ginger?) wrap instead of seaweed. I can never figure out what exactly it is, but it's yummy. Veggie rolls are about $2, most of the other maki is less than $4/roll, and you can even buy the spicy mayonnaise separately and add it to whatever you want. It's tasty. If you're in a rush and don't want to wait for your meal to be prepared on the spot, they always have pre-packed combos ready to go. Not too far away from Old Orchard Mall, so give it a try next time you're in the area! read more

Do NOT eat at AO Sushi. The staff is amazingly rude and could care less about their customers. I went here with three friends. I ordered and then two more in my group. Another customer cut in front of the fourth in my group. Then, at 7:31 (they close at 7:30 on Saturdays), after waiting and waiting in line, in the store, they said they were closed and would not take the last order. In all my years, I have never experienced BS like this in a restaurant. I love sushi and live a few blocks away and I will NEVER eat at AO Sushi again. A dump when compared to other Japanese markets in Arlington Heights. Very sad looking fish selection and the sashimi cuts are horrendous and expensive. Fresh fish cleaned right. they always take their time preparing your purchase. I hate bones in my fish and they have never let me down. The emphasis seems to be on quality rather than selection. I came here to pick up sushi to bring on a picnic. It is like a little grocery store where you can either pick up pre-made sushi or order it at the counter. There was some nice cuts of fish in there. I was watching the guy slice up a huge piece of fish and it made me crave sashimi. We ordered from behind the counter to get fresher pieces. You only have to wait 5-10 minutes so it is totally worth it. The rolls are cheap but they are pretty much the standard types of rolls. Nothing fancy. It is a great place to pick up sushi for picnic or order a platter for a party. (They have great deals on huge platters.) read more

They failed the Spicy Tuna Roll test - something that any competent Sushi Bar needs to pass. Before I purchase raw shellfish or other more difficult to prepare raw fish, I always start with a Spicy Tuna Roll - and it should have a certain creamy taste with a bit of spice. So yesterday I went in, purchased two Spicy Tuna Rolls and a Diet Coke - total cost about $17.00. Right what I'd expect to pay at a sit down Sushi Restaurant. The Spicy Tuna Rolls were not Spicy at all - they were actually extremely salty. When I asked for more spicy mayo I was told it would be $.89. Good grief. "How was it?" They asked. My kids have been really craving sushi this summer. When we saw that AO is the little sister of our Sea Ranch in Evanston, we happily opted to eat there even though they're more known for their fresh to go service. My kids eat on opposite spectrums of sushi while my son opts for crunchy California rolls, tamago and avocado rolls and my daughter wants the spicy tuna and sashimi stuff! Although this place will do the job if you're hungry and don't have time to go somewhere else, I don't know why people order from here when they can just order from Akai Hana which is a full service restaurant next door. They do take out too. It doesn't make sense to me bc Sea Ranch has more expensive prices when you compare their pre-made sushi boxes to akai hana's lunch combinations.
