We walk by Asian Box on Chestnut almost every day but had never tried it until tonight. Unfortunately, it was a big disappointment. I ordered vegetables with rice and he had the number one protein item on the top of the wall menu -- both were flavorless and boring. We also ordered shrimp spring rolls, which never arrived because the cashier forgot. We got them finally after asking and they were handed to us in a to go box like fresh out of the fridge. Later, we ordered another beer, and that was forgotten too. What made it worse was that the only other customers -- two women who were clearly friends with a guy working there -- got their food and drinks right away, while ours were overlooked. It was worse than fast food and definitely not what I'd call Vietnamese fast casual. Yuck. We won't return. read more

Always passed by this place but never noticed what it was until my coworker recently kept raving about how customizable and affordable it was. My friend and I decided to order online for pick up. They have multiple locations in SF and throughout the Bay Area. We got: 1 create your own chicken box ($17), 1 chef's signature box ($17), and 1 kids box ($14). Creating our own chicken box allowed us to choose a base (salad, rice, or vermicelli) remove any included toppings, switch sauces, or add additional proteins (+$4) besides the chicken. The chef's signature box of salmon salad was exactly what the name sounded like. The kids box had the option to choose a base and protein, and came with a cookie, side broccoli, and drink of choice. I felt like the kids box was the best deal of the 3 (also what my coworker kept raving about) since you can add an additional protein for $4 and it comes out to $14 which is less than the other boxes. Keep in mind that this is meant for kids (also listed on their website for 10 years and younger) so the portions will be smaller. Either way, everything tasted healthy and fresh - from the soft baked salmon to the lemongrass pork. The 3 boxes were split among 3 people and we finished everything. It was a nice light meal so I'd say the portion is just right for those who are not too hungry. read more

Tried this place for the first time today, and I was sadly disappointed. I came by with my coworker, and we both got "create your own box" meals. The flavor itself was good in my opinion, but what ruined it for both of us were the cold noodles and overall portion sizes. The noodles were hard and dry, and seemed to be at least a day old. On top of that, they didn't give very much of it. My coworker also ordered double meat, but when his came out, there was no real difference. We both ended up leaving still hungry. I stopped by after a workout and got 'The Workout' and took a counter spot by the window, which has a nice view of the street but is a little chaotic being near the cashier. Food came out within minutes! The tamarind sauce is a little sweet, so I wish there was a little more depth (fish sauce, soy sauce, five spice, etc.). I thoroughly enjoyed eating here. The location is perfect, staff were friendly, prices are decent, and the food was delicious. About the food: I love a good Banh Mi sandwich, and on gluten free bread - the lemongrass pork was a powerhouse on its own and the jalapeños kicked as much as you'd want them to. Definitely wasn't mad. I also had the Sriracha Buffalo Wings, which were moist but still could've been crispier - tasty nonetheless. More kicking on the spice level as well, which is my preference. Jan 2024: Asian Box has changed a lot in the past year or so. I am so bummed that the pickled veggies that used to be crunchy cucumber and carrot are now mushy carrots and daikon. The mixed veggies used to already include a hefty amount of cabbage WITH broccoli and now you are charged 50 cents more if you want like 4 pieces of broccoli. I don't think the mixed veggies even have cabbage anymore. You can see the drastic difference in the two pictures I provide. The quality and quantity has gone down. I really hope management considers this feedback from a longtime customer. Texture, color and variety is sooo important with dishes like this. It's turned into blah mush and just feels bland and unexciting. I get that post covid there's a lot of cutting costs which I understand but I honestly would rather pay more for consistent, good quality food than pay $15+ already for the very sad boxes I have been receiving from here so far. I have been to the Chestnut location, and have been to the one in Burlingame as well a bunch of times, and it always hits the spot. My kids get the Chicken Curry, which they love. The Asian bento food here is so flavorful, with the right amount of spice and sweetness, if that's your thing. Pictured below is the Vietnamese Hot Chicken box. My spice tolerance has dropped in recent years (used to eat spicy Indian food) so I found this box, as advertised, spicy. Or, it could have been the hot sauce they helpfully provided in the side.
