Astro Burger has a ton of vegetarian options. My favorite is the Veggie BLT which is delicious. It's been so damn long since I've had bacon that it actually tastes like the real thing to me. The vegetarian chile is good, not great. The Lentil soup is hearty. their greek salad is really good! It's not the healthiest place on the planet but if you're in a pinch and you're a Vegetarian or Vegan, you will find plenty to satisfy you here... But this joint is just that - a joint, a hole in the wall, a fast food place basically so don't expect ambience. Though to be fair they do have a patio with some plants on it and on a sunny day, sit outside - why not? For what it is, it's great and has a big selection of foods to suit any mood. I'm not much of a red meat person, so I order the turkey burger. Nothing special. Just enough seasoning, but not enough to WOW me. I absolutely love their fried zucchini though. It's got that nice crunch on the outside and piping hot zucchini in the middle with no strange aftertaste, it's delicious. If it weren't for the zucchini I would've given this place 2 stars. I can't believe I didn't know about this place until today! Essentially, Astro Burger is your standard Burger joint, with standard burger joint fare...PLUS a huge VEGETARIAN and VEGAN menu! There were SO many options that I had to stick with my first instinct and go with a Gardendog and Vegan Chili Cheeze fries. The dog was topped with mustard, relish and onions, and only could have been better if they had saurkraut to top it off. The Vegan Chili on the fries was really good, clearly made in house, and had such delicious suprises as carrots and lentils as it's ingredients! Veggies also have many other options; Veggie Chik'n fajitas, Veggie BLT's, 'Chik'n' sandwiches, Dolmas, and much, much more. I can't wait to go back and try some of the other items! Astro Burger is also very, very clean inside, the prices are really affordable and the staff very friendly. I am definitely a big fan! read more

You know, it never hurts to have a burger at a place where you're sure it's been around for probably a decade (I hope!). Our order consisted of astroburgers and astroburgers w/ pastrami and fries (regular and sweet potato). I'm not a big pastrami fan but the guys thought it was good? I thought the burgers were good, nothing to brag about... just a good solid well sized 1/4lb burger. The sweet potato fries were limpy, I would not recommend it. Fairly large selection of foods - greek, american, desserts and vegetarian. There are several LA eateries that lay claim to the Astro-Burger moniker, but a meal in the blue hut at the corner of Gower and Melrose will reveal all others as pretenders to the throne. For a small, family-run establishment, Astro-Burger has an enormous menu, and they take great pride in having been the first place in LA to serve GardenBurgers. The menu now includes all manner of vegetarian options, in addition to spanakopita, dolmas, gyros and a variety of daily Greek specials. But I'm a Texan, dammit. I bleed red, my colors don't run, and I don't go to a place called Astro-Burger for the vegetables. Good thing the burgers are delicious. You can order a large, tender char-grilled burger with just about any topping you want, but the standard is lettuce, tomato, onion, and Astro-Sauce (a mild variant of Thousand Island that's my favorite in the city). Connoisseurs will make sure to top their Astro-Burger with cheese and a pile of supple grilled onions, or go for the decked out bacon-avocado cheeseburger coupled with a batch of the fresh fry-cut zucchini. We were coming back from Korea town last night, heading towards Pink's Hotdogs. I know there's a veggie dog there I wanted to try, but when we rode pass Astro's, (it's one of those places I've driven pass many times and said to myself I should try it) I guess last night was the time. We made a u a couple of blocks down and headed to Astro's. Every time I drove pass this place I'd see the vegetarian sign but I would never have guessed that they had a large veggie/vegan menu, I was just expecting a veggie burger. To my surprise, they had a plethora of veggie/vegan stuff. My friend and I had the chik'n sandwich special, not bad at all. It reminded me of a meatball sandwich though. Because their veggie menu is vast and cheeeeaaaaaap! I'll have to make a few more trips there to try out the rest of the veggie/vegan menu. CASH only! I am so happy that Astro Burger has a drive thru!! So far everything I've tried has been good. The portion size on the french fries are very very small for the price they charge ($3.57) but I buy them anyway because it's the only local burger stand besides McDonald's that has a drive thru. The burgers are pretty good, Turkey, beef and veggie. Chilli fries are okay but again, the portion size is small for the price they charge. Vegetarians: Support this place! For work, I had to drive to L.A. from San Diego, drop something off near Astro Burger, then drive back to San Diego. A trip of this magnitude deserves a delicious lunch stop. I chose Astro Burger because it was fast, not crazy expensive, and they cater to vegetarians. I ordered the vegetarian corn dog, vegetarian chili fries, and a large Diet Coke. Total: About $11. Kind of a lot for what it was. What it was: A Morningstar Farms (or corndog of equal quality), fried. Not worth the $3-ish, I could practically get a whole box of veggie corndogs for that much. The frying did elevate it a bit, but not enough for me. The chili fries were pretty good though. It was a pretty big serving, easily enough for two people or enough for a meal for one. The chili had beans, veggies (carrot, tomato, onions), and lentils - a nice touch. I would have liked it a bit spicier and with more salt. But, I'm a vegetarian chili snob. I'd order the chili fries again, for sure. I think most of their vegetarian items (if not all) are just cooked, previously frozen Gardenburger and Morningstar products. A good option if you're out and about and need to eat, but not so great when you think you could just make the same thing at home with very little effort and less money. Cash-only is a pet peeve of mine. I'd be happy to pay a $.25 fee in order to have the convenience of using plastic. That being said, the woman at the drive-thru yesterday morning at 7:30am was the best drive-thru employee I've ever encountered anywhere. She was just nice, helpful, spoke English well and truly seemed happy to be there. I had their breakfast quesadilla and an orange juice. 3.5 Stars. This is the boyfriend's usual lunch spot since he works in Hollywood, and every time we pass by Astroburger, he's always saying, "Oh, we have to go there sometime." Well, sometime came yesterday before we headed to a movie. It was the perfect quick-bite-before-the-show because food was served fast and because the food was delicious, I wasted no time in inhaling the goods. Chili Cheese Fries with Onions Chili Cheese Dog hot pickled yellow peppers The chili was a bit of a mush and lacked texture, but it tasted delicious with loads of cheddar cheese melted all over it. I had a bite of the veggie burger and it was pretty darn good, too. We took a pineapple shake to go..vanilla shake with chunks of pineapple that get stuck in the straw and makes it fold over on itself with nothing coming out of the straw. Excellent taste, poor execution. I told the boyfriend that I'll be rating this place 3.5 stars because I wasn't completely 'wowed' and he seems convinced that I would give it a solid 4 stars if I ate the fried zucchini. I get mad hankerin's for a burger and Astro is where I head. They not only are delicious but they have a variety of VEGETARIAN options that make me so damn happy (their fake steak is a little weird with that spongy texture). And frikkin Zucchini Fries. And they are open pretty late and have a drive through! Rock! Only downside and it really irks me is that they are cash only and they do have an ATM inside but it's got a $2 charge on it which kind sucks when at a la cart prices things add up fast. read more

The Ortega Burger I think it's called...veggie patty, ortega chili, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, onion, thousand island. Amazing. My boyfriend enjoys the beef burgers, too. Since we were in the neighborhood, we decided to stop here. We heard about Astroburger through a few people who gave it a good review. First off, it's cash only! Good thing we had cash on us! But they do have an atm to withdrawal, but I don't know if the extra withdrawal chargers are worth the food. We ordered the bacon Astroburger with fries and a chocolate shake. The chocolate shake had the consistency of real ice cream which I do like. The fries are thick cut and delicious when you first get them. They have a nice crunch on the outside and then a soft inside. My fave! Besides the "sides" the burger was alright. They gave a decent amount of bacon which is nice that they were stingy. But the burger wasn't anything special really. It's a traditional hamburger which I sometimes crave, but I can pretty much find that at any burger spot. I wouldn't make a special trip to go back, but if I'm in the area I may try it again! read more

The prices aren't super-low (the above meal plus lemonade ran me nearly $10), but they are certainly cooking to order. Unlike most fast food type spots, portion size is reasonable, which I really appreciate. While Astro Burger does not accept credit cards, they do have an ATM next to the register. You know, the kind that you walk away from in such satisfied bliss that you don't think too much about how much they cost... But these turkey burgers are most definitely not those. In fact they may be the worst turkey burgers in the world. So dry. We're talkin' dry like in between the buns it seems like they put another piece of bread, not turkey. Even with avocado on top it was barely edible. I actually left the last part of my "turkey" burger and just ate the remaining avocado. The veggie chili fries were SO bland I only ate a few bites of those and left the rest in a bag outside for perhaps someone even hungrier than I. Does this place cater to those on low sodium diets? One would think so with the lack of any seasoning. To eat here again, I'd have to be in such an altered state of mind that I a) don't care about the price and b) am not able to realize the subparness of the food. I've been to Astro Burger a number of times due to it being right next to AmplyFi and have had different experiences each time. Sometimes it's been great, other times I was very disappointed. My best experience was with some kind of leftover chicken sandwich that a friend had. I also had a very delicious cheeseburger when I missed my bus home after a concert one night. However I was disappointed with the chili and when I ordered my own chicken sandwich. One thing this place really has going for it are the options. They have desserts, typical american fast food, mexican, desserts, and a good selection of greek food and vegetarian meals. I'm going to keep coming back because of the location and I'd like to sample all the other varieties of food before I make an ultimate judgement. They seem to have a lot of elderly regulars coming in for the soup, perhaps I will try that next. You never know who you are going to see in Astro Burger because of it's location, I'm pretty sure I saw Dave Grohl chilling in the back one night with an unidentified rocker. Unfortunately despite having some solid food choices I find the prices too steep, especially when on occasion the quality doesn't always match the price. If I can add one more plus, the wait in my experience isn't very long for a place that offers so many options, and most of the food appears to be cooked fresh. You can see most if not all of the kitchen from the counter. I'm sure there are some prepped items but I have yet to see them. On a busy night It isn't fast enough to keep up though, be prepared to wait if there are quite a few people inside. read more

I have two favorite burgers in LA. One is a "High End" Burger, the other is a "Low End" burger. Father's Office in Santa Monica is the high end one, AstroBurger is my low end...but just because it's the low end burger doesn't mean it's not delicious. Damn good Burger. Damn good Fries.
