I have been eating at Astros since a child. I usually go to the one in Montebello. That one is still traditional. I'm not sure what happened at this one. The burger wasn't anything special, the price was high for the quality. The lettuce taste like it was ready to be thrown out. Trully disappointed in the quantity of fries in the order after eating all the food I was still hungry. This is a pretty good burger spot with a very extensive menu. I've been eating here for about 3 years now. In the morning before I go to work, I call in my order for breakfast. When I arrive, it's usually ready. They cook your order on the spot so it can take a while to have it prepared but when it's ready your meal is always hot. They use to take cash only but now they do accept credit cards, finally! The parking in the back is a bit odd and can be challenging to navigate or get access to due to the buildup of traffic at the Melrose traffic light. Well, the food here is good. But not great. On any given night you can be surrounded by drunk people screaming at the top of their lungs about some strange issue they have. Needless to say, when these drunks are around, its best to get your food to go. Not saying that these people determine the food, but they do determine the atmosphere. I tend to enjoy their Mexican food, which really isn't that bad. Their burgers could use a lil more cooking at times, but if you tell them well done, you get Well Done. they are a bit pricey and they don't take Credit cards. Astro makes pretty good food, but it can get pricy, since they don't offer combinations, other than for breakfast. Breakfast is pretty reasonable and tasty, but their attempt at Mexican food is laughable, especial the "home-made Spanish sauce". The burgers are good, the gyros are good, and the portions (like fries) are generous, but priced on the steep side. Another plus is the freshness of the food. The four stars is really due to the memories as well as the burgers. I came here in 2002 and ordering the veggie burger (back when I was a vegetarian). I was visiting LA at the time and researched what the best burger places were - and I was directed to Astro Burger. We would order and sit outside and eat. As far as veggie burgers go, they do a really good job here. Then, I came back in 2004 and tried their turkey burger and their regular burger. Even yummier than their veggie burger. I love their fries. Something to note here - it's not oily as other burger joints, which is why I love Astros. Another place to be revisited soon. read more

Seriously, these are legit burgers. They're medium-thin griddled burgers, with nice char, still pretty oozy. Don't bother getting too much stuff on them - I got both the standard Astroburger, and also one with bacon, avocado, and cheese. I love bacon and cheese, and I like avocado, so you'd think the bacon/avocado/cheeseburger would be mind-blowing. It's not. The standard burger is the way to go, and it's pretty cheap. It's probably about 1/3 lb., with nice fresh veggies. The fries and onion rings are solid, but not spectacular. You'll probably need to salt them yourself; we did. The best thing about this place is that it's open reasonably late, and is pretty close to Hollywood, so you can get your eat on after being out in the evening. read more

Until a few weeks ago I thought this was a chain burger joint. I guess I was wrong! My husband raved about their cheap breakfast, so we went for a late-morning meal. For under $2 I ordered an egg pita wrap with bacon, cheese and mayo. It was decent and I would order this again. Very briefly, I did computer programing for a company that was a front for the Russian mafia that had set up shop not too far from Astro Burger. Before I would go into work, I would stop at Astro for breakfast. For some reason I've never been able to figure out, they were cheaper than cooking at home, and I got more food. Recently, on a trek back to the city, I thought it would be a great idea to stop in for breakfast. If I had only known... Astro Burger received some attention, when a certain actress skipped the usual Award parties to chow down on a burger here. It was shortly after that the quality nose-dived. When I returned, I ordered my usual breakfast. A simple cheese omelet with all the usual side. What they gave to me appeared to be quite lacking. Smaller portions, smaller amount of filling, smaller everything. I don't know about anyone else, but scrambled eggs in the shape of an omelet with a slice of cheese does not make an omelet to me. I was shocked to find that condiments that were usually available, now had to be "requested." I say that because the staff, who were more interested in whatever the morning DJ on Que Buena was rambling about was more important than the paying customers at the counter. When I asked for simple things like strawberry jam, they all but threw it at me. There are good breakfast places in Las Angeles. But this place certainly isn't one anymore. read more

We were trying to think of someplace gnarly to go for dinner, and we were beckoned to Astro Burg' by the blinking neon. Yes, all it takes to get us in to your joint is to put something really bright/shiny outfront of your dive. What of it? Anyway, the menu is awesome. I love places that seemingly have zero theme in their expansive menus that spread out over multiple walls. Even better is when they run out of space and have to put MORE menu someplace else in the building. Thats when you know its good. Anyway, i went for the straight up astro burg' and an order of onion rings (or Rangs, if you will). The onion rings were home made, none of that from the bag junk. They werent particularly flavorful, however. They need to kick up the seasoning in the batter to make the rangs a better choice. The burg itself was a pretty good deal at $3.50. Pretty weighty. However, i got the feeling that I could have made the same burg at home. Thats not really what im looking for when i go out to eat. Pretty basic flavor. Wow me, do something different. A Carnivore who LOVES this Uber-Veggie Friendly Establishment. That is what my headline would read. Here's the deal. It's super convenient--less than a 2 min drive from my house. And after a 12-14 hour work day, there is nothing better than coming to Astro's to feed my belly! So these are a few of my LOVES: -hamburgers. All of them. this place gets the 4th star for the huge vegetarian option. they have just about everything you can get on the "regular menu" available veggie style. an earlier review said that this place can get expensive fast, which i think totally depends on what you order. a lot of veggie products - such as morningstar or gardenburger (which astroburger uses) - are more expensive at pavilions or von's or whatever, so that part makes sense to me. i also think it depends on what you get. from my experience, the better meals are cheaper (veggie sausage, 2 scrambled eggs & 2 pieces of wheat toast + coffee = $6.75), and the more expensive ones (veggie chili fries + lackluster gazpacho = $11)... aren't. all in all, i AM a fan of astroburger! read more

Astro Burger, a hidden gem of the Los Angeles. The first time I came here I was working a job at Paramount and this place was suggested for our lunch break. At first I was skeptical, for years I passed this place and never gave it a second thought. But now that I've found it, I'm so glad to have been "shown the light". The burgers are really quite delicious and not your typical fast food burger. Though you wait a tad (and I really mean tad) bit longer for the food, it's so worth it. You know it's made fresh and it is definitely not frozen. Yes it's greasy, but it's the best kind of greasy! If I were alive in the fifties, this is what I would imagine good fast food/diner food to taste like this. The American Burger is so moist and flavorful. And the bacon cheeseburger is mouthwatering. The fries and onion rings are made fresh and are always served pipping hot. All they need is a little salt, and we are ready to have a good time! The only downside for me is that (at least the drive through) is CASH ONLY. Always a bummer when you order and then find out they don't take cards, but I have since learned from my mistakes and have never made that mistake again. Always come prepared with cash, because these burgers are worth it! You know it's made fresh, you can taste the difference. This is probably the only "fast" food that I eat. So enjoy! Great place for a late night craving. The menu is huge so there's definitely something for everyone. I was impressed with the size of the vegetarian menu as well. I got a gyro which definitely hit the spot- the only thing is I wish there were more veggies on it so it tasted a bit fresher but it was still good. My boyfriend got a burger which he enjoyed as well. I had a bite of it and it tastes exactly how you would expect- a classic diner style burger. Really good. The temperature of your food arrives exactly as you would expect it to. -Greasy food without the grease. Vegetarian Options: -YES! -Of course it's not all vegetarian, so you and your carnivore friends can all enjoy a large selection of diner foods TOGETHER. In fact nearly all the foods on the "meat menu" can be found on the veggie-friendly menu. -It is also worth noting that nearly all of my meat-eating friends genuinely enjoyed the vegetarian foods that they decided to try. Can't say it's extraordinary, but can't say that it's terrible. Bathrooms (W): -Bare bones: toilet, mirror, soap and sink. Tips: -Bring cash! No plastic allowed! Luckily, there is an ATM on site if you're unprepared. -Do not even bother asking them to substitute and rearrange ingredients UNLESS if you don't mind paying up the wazoo. I think I asked them to customize a vegetarian ham and cheese omelet and they charged me $8 (versus the $4-5 meat version). -Go during non-lunch times to avoid long lines. But if you have to go during peak lunch hours and you insist on the drive-thru, make sure that when you head towards this location you are driving on Gower on the Southbound side. You don't wanna be stuck on the Northbound side, making a left-hand turn with a long ass line on the other side with hungry patrons who won't let you cut in. -If you don't want to waste gas waiting in line at the drive-thru, they do have their own (FREE) parking lot and street parking (walking in can sometimes be the faster way). Overall Review: J'adore l'Astro Burger! I've been coming here for years and the food has been consistently delicious. Oh AB, I would love you more if you served breakfast (my favorite meal) all day. Had an Jalepeno burger meal. Came with fries. No drink, that's seperate. Burger was good. Pretty large and tasty. Nothing extraordinary. I like that they werent light on the Jalepenos like in other fast food restaurants. Just wish it was hotter though. For my taste, I like my chilis to burn my entire mouth. Bun seem to be falling apart cuz the burger was loaded w/ the jalepenos, lettuce, onions, etc. Also, the bun seem to be very flaky...what i heard that means it's been sitting out for a while (old but not moldy old).
