I have to admit the food was great, the Greek salad was abundant and very tasty and the gyro sandwich was very good, the meat was charbroiled which I never encountered before, tasted amazing. It was a bit low on Tzatziki sauce though. When I got there it wasn't too crowded, but as the afternoon was approaching it got very busy very fast and the place is not that big, so at the end it felt crowded. I left as the live music was setting up so didn't get to hear them, but they are supposed to be good. The service was ok, but lagged at times. The only think I can complain is the prices. Coming from Miami, I found that $53 for a gyro sandwich with fries, a Greek salad and a tea was waaaay too expensive. Granted, the restaurant is gourmet level and is in Los Angeles, but in Miami it would have been about as good for less than half. I still recommend it though, the food is great and you'll have to decide if it is too expensive for you all things considered. read more

This mid-year, when we heard about the closing of one of my Los Angeles family's favorite old-school restaurants, Papa Cristo's Catering & Greek Taverna, we wondered if a relative would point us to another casual, neighborhood, and family-style Greek restaurant by the time we had planned to revisit the city during Christmastime. Sure enough, my in-laws introduced us to The Great Greek in Sherman Oaks. We swooped into Sherman Oaks on a Sunday morning in time to the restaurant's first customers of the day. My relatives assured us about the food flavors, quality, ambiance, friendliness, and value of this neighborhood restaurant, as they've eaten here for several dinners but not lunch, as we requested. Upon entry, three workers (hostess/server, bartender, and cook?) greeted us. Of course, we had our choice of tables in their spacious restaurant. Our server seemed to recognize my relatives as my eldest brother-in-law introduced us as relatives and visiting from Hawai'i. She promptly brought us a water pitcher and poured some into each of our glasses. Throughout our lunch, we felt the service was very friendly, welcoming, family-comfortable yet professional, and efficient. I had previously looked over the menu while we waited for their opening and decided to try one of their sandwiches. My brother-in-law raved about the domathes and told us it was not to be missed. FOOD: -Dolmathes (Stuffed Grape Leaves): four huge (2 to 3 mouthfuls), plump, tender, and generously stuffed grape leaves were served with an egg-lemon (avgolemono) sauce. The homemade dolmathes tasted tangy, savory, and slightly briny. 4/$15 -Cold Combo: tarama, hummus, tzatziki, and melitzanosalata, served with pita. I couldn't resist ordering the four classic Mediterranean dips and pita instead of separate dishes of tzatziki, melitzanosalata, and tarama or taramasalata. We were pleased with the flavors and consistency of the four dips or spreads, as we were more familiar with melitzanosalata, the "rustic" cousin of smoother Levantine baba ganoush, and taramasalata, a.k.a. Greek caviar spread made from salted, cured fish roe (bottarga). $23 -Lamb Kebab Sandwich: I ordered the lamb kebab or souvlaki sandwich, which was served on pita bread, tzatziki, red onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes. Souvlaki, or kebab, skewers are a quintessential Greek street food, and this restaurant's lamb skewers recipe was one of the best I've tasted in the USA. The skewered marinated lamb cubes/chunks were tasty, tender, and grilled to perfection. I could taste the olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, and oregano marinade from the juiciness of each meat cube. The sandwich or wrap was served with a choice of avgolemono (egg-lemon soup) or Greek salad. I was happy to have selected the avgolemono soup, as it was hearty, silky, creamy, and thick, with orzo and diced chicken. $23 -Gyro Sandwich: My husband selected the gyro sandwich, which was also packed with five slices of delicious and tender gyro meat. The sandwich or wrap was served on pita bread, slathered with tzatziki, red onions, and bell peppers. He chose to pair his sandwich with the Greek salad, which was refreshing and dressed just right, so that the vegetables' freshness shone through without being drowned in vinaigrette. $18 My brother-in-law, who usually eats here at dinner hour, ordered the Char-broiled Lamb Souvlaki Plate ($32) instead of the Oven-Roasted Spring Lamb Plate ($28) and declared he'd order the souvlaki plate next time he comes in for dinner. The last time I visited Great Greek was in 1991 when a group of us celebrated the end of the L.A Valley College school year. I had taken a sabbatical and had gone back to living the life of a college student 34 years ago. Great Greek has great staying power at its original site on Ventura Blvd. with a two man band playing the "top 20" Greek classics as well as a few Happy Birthday songs in between. On this Saturday evening there was no one leading the "Hora coming from the Greek word "" (khoros), meaning to dance," Maybe it was too early since we left at 8pm. 1) Spanakopita: Like a delicate multi-layered ultra thin Filo dough Empanada stuffed with nutmeg & sweet butter scented, fluffy egg, spinach-goat cheese soufflé. Huge portion so plan on taking much of the following main course home for lunch the next day. 2) Oven-Roasted Spring Lamb: Oven braised in broth to keep the lamb from drying out even though it was well done. Soft, meaty, fibrous, pleasantly gamey. There are hints of earthy oregano, thyme to add to the rustic flavours. Chunks of zucchini braised in tomato sauce. Boiled, starchy, firm yet soft potato boiled in broth. Al dente fat rice steamed in chicken broth slathered with agrodolce tomato sauce 3) Galaktobouriko: Lightly sweet, springy, warm egg custard, sprinkle of cinnamon, leathery, filo dough base. It's a gentle dessert that eases you out from a good meal. With such a big crowd, the waiters had to always be running. Our waiter, Nicolas, was service oriented and very accommodating to our needs, especially giving us separate checks for our large group. Bravo! This may not be the most accomplished Greek food in L.A. But with other iconic Greek restaurants disappearing like 77 year old Papa Christos; 40 year old Sofi Greek restaurant started by Sofi Lazaridis, owner-cook, a medical doctor, who turned to the restaurant business because she loves to cook; short lived Inotheke with modern Greek cuisine; and long gone 44 year old Papadakis Taverna, Great Greek deserves more years of continuing a great tradition. 4- stars read more

Called directly to make a lunch reservation. Parking was easy to find and free on Ventura. But, it was a Sunday afternoon. The Blue Mediterranean with Shrimp was fantastic and so big that I took much of it home and had the rest for dinner. My husband loved the gyro. The complimentary bread with olive oil was a very nice touch. Great service. The gentleman who waited on us had no problem with separate checks given we were dining with friends. I have a taste for a really good salad. I'm so glad I tried this place! You get three nice size pieces of pita bread in one order. The dressing for the salad is absolutely delicious! Since it was takeout, they put it on the side and wrapped it tightly with foil. I wish I would've known how good it was. I would've ordered an extra one because it was a delicious dip for the pita bread too! Salad was big enough to save some for another meal. With the very limited options for Greek food in the valley, thank goodness that The Great Greek is one of the oldest and one of the best, this place has been around since I was 10 years old, I remember coming here with my parents when it was new, and the fact that it is still here, still packed, and still vibrant is a testament to the ambiance, service, and the wonderful food. Starting with the food, I can't say enough great things. From the saganaki to the dolma, from the hummus to the souvlaki, from the vegetarian combo to the avgolemono soup... every single item on the menu is wonderful and filled with flavor. Get a glass of retsina and prepare your tastebuds to be WOWed. And the entertainment is great too! Usually a duo, keyboards and bouzouki they know all the classics and keep everyone's toes tapping. Don't be surprised if spontaneous dancing breaks out, this place gets HOPPING on the weekends. I've been coming here for decades and it never disappoints, great food, great service, and a great time! There is valet parking or street parking (if you can find it), we often have to park several blocks away to avoid paying for valet but it is worth it, and I'm telling you, you'll probably stuff yourself and appreciate a brief walk afterwards! I've been to the Great Greek a couple of times for lunch and have enjoyed the food each time. I've tried the tarama dip with pita, the gyro sandwich and the chicken souvlaki plate. Both were good size portions, and I like that the meals come with soup or salad. They also serve complimentary bread with olive oil. I found the bread to be fresh and soft inside, not dry like in other reviews I read. Service has been a bit slow but it's not a huge deal as I'm not usually in a rush. Parking was easy on side streets on Sundays for lunch. At other times it may be more challenging. read more

We had gotten the greek caviar tarama to share. I had ordered the greek style vegetarian plate. Everything tasted nice and fresh. My husband felt like Greek food, sounded great to me. I asked on Nextdoor for a suggestion, this place was recommended. I made reservations for 6:30. We pulled up to the valet. $15. I do not know if there is parking around back. When we arrived the restaurant was empty. Within a few minutes people began arriving. In groups. This is a nice place to meet family and friends. Our waiter greeted us promptly. The menu has great choices. My husband ordered spanikopita. I ordered the roast lamb dinner. He had wine, I had a mojito, which was delicious! We shared a salad. Bread was served with olive oil on the side. Dinner arrived and those plates were loaded with food. My lamb was so delicious, so tender and tasty, and so much of it! His dinner was also delicious. Each dinner was served with half a roasted potato, rice and cabbage, the vegetable of the day. My husband cleaned his plate! I could not finish, and was happy to bring the rest of my lamb and veggies home. We were too full for dessert, but the menu was tempting. We ended our meal with lattes. Great we got our drinks but again 15 minutes later we had to get up and asked who if someone was working our table. Finally got a waiter to take our appetizer order and one of our party has celiac and was told, he called before to ask about gluten dishes, and was told to just ask his waiter. Our waiter basically told him he was too busy and to just order something then he would check and see if it was gluten free. A shitty way to handle the gluten issue. The night never got better. Water glasses say empty and nothing would have happened without us getting up to ask for assistance. The food has really gone down hill too. It's been way too many years since I had stopped in at The Great Greek, & over the holidays I was reminded of how yummy this place is! First off, I want to say thank you for being open on Christmas Day, I can't stress enough how much we appreciate the restaurants that are open on major holidays! We placed an order for pick-up & when going inside, the place was pretty full & so festive with a live musician playing in a little corner while everyone enjoyed their holiday dinner. I asked the server helping me if they regularly had live music, & he said they do every night- something that will definitely get me back in there for a sit-down meal! My son & I were a bit under the weather, so we wanted some comfort food that was really tasty & coming here was the ticket. We ordered the cold plate with fresh pitas, Moussaka, & Baked "Pastitsio" Deep-Dish Pasta for the 3 of us to share. All of the food was so incredibly delicious! We booked this place for an anniversary celebration in December of 2023 for a party of almost 30 people. Service was amazing, they set up 2 separate but next to each other long tables at the end against the wall so we had our own space. Food was amazing and since it was a big party they give you the preset menu.
