After what felt like 5 years to try this place, I FINALLY got to try the famous burger here! Spark notes: this place is definitely worth the wait! My friend and I dedicated a day where we would just put our name down and however long it took we would wait haha. We drove into the city which took and hour and we put our name down and waited an hour before we were called. The weather was great so we just walked around the west loop area. We started with a half size of the green salad and a half size of the roasted bone marrow. The house salad is super refreshing. A lot of vinegar in the dressing which I personally really like. Also tasted some fennel which was an interesting flavor. The roasted bone marrow is the winner of the night. I would come back to Au Cheval for this alone. It was paired with a thick slice of Texas toast and a beef cheek marmalade and it is seriously the PERFECT balance of flavors. Fatty. Sweet. Buttery. Literally insane and this is a must order! Then came the famous burger. My friend and I each ordered a single cheeseburger with the egg and bacon added. Something to note is that the single cheeseburger actually has 2 patties and the double cheeseburger has 3 patties (3/4lbs of beef). The presentation itself is beautiful and makes you just not want to eat it haha. The burger itself is so decadent and hefty with the burger patties, cheese, egg and bacon. I'll be honest, I needed some more pickles or just something to cut all the fattiness of the burger. There were pickles in the burger and it is served with a huge pickle spear. But I still was itching for some more bitterness/acid to balance the flavors. It was so decadent, I couldn't finish it all. All in all, I would definitely come back and order the burger again and would recommend it to anyone! We ordered a side of fries which came with their garlic aioli. The fries were cooked to perfection. Super crunchy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside and piping hot! The garlic aioli is perfect and have no notes for it. We also were treated to a vanilla scoop with chocolate sauce which was the perfect cap to our meal! Our waitress was so friendly and my friend and I loved her! She was so sweet and genuine. Hog Salt restaurants never fail with their service!
Au Cheval absolutely lived up to the hype. We were quoted a 45-minute wait, and it ended up being almost exactly 45 minutes, which gave us time to explore the area. Once our table was ready, we were seated right away. The restaurant is on the smaller side, so seating is limited and it can get crowded, but it honestly adds to the lively atmosphere. From the moment we sat down, our server was amazing. He was incredibly attentive, walked us through the menu, and explained that the "single" cheeseburger is actually a double patty, while the "double" is actually a triple. He also recommended ordering the bone marrow and saving the jam that comes with it to spread on the burger, a little "Au Cheval hack" that many regulars apparently swear by. We tried it, and it made the burger even more flavorful. I also highly recommend adding the fried egg to the burger. It gave it a rich, creamy texture that brought everything together perfectly. Despite being such a simple burger, the quality of the ingredients and the balance of flavors made it one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. The service from everyone: the host stand to our server was exceptional. And while I didn't order the wings, several tables around us did, and they looked and smelled incredible. They're definitely on my list for my next visit. I'll absolutely be back.
Au Cheval is likely the most coveted restaurant destination for out-of-towners. "Best Burger" "it's so delicious with the egg" "I'm glad you're ending your trip with Au Cheval". I'd like to throw in my own quote into the gauntlet: "it's ok". It sounds harsh but Our burger patty was noticeably dry. The bread... was also dry. The egg and bacon add-ons were good but as a whole, the burger was missing the core aspect. The bread being dry I can justify by knowing that Au Cheval makes it a point to make everything gluten-free (or so someone told me). I think that's cool but not necessarily what I came looking for. I actually noticed prior to our trip from photos that the buns looked noticeably arid but I gave them no heed because of all of the praise. And I can give them the benefit of the doubt that we were there on a Sunday night, so potentially not the most quality inventory (although I personally don't think that's a great excuse). The service and the ambiance were on point! If you're wondering if there's a required attire (no shorts or flip flops) I wouldn't fret, the atmosphere is a lot more casual despite self-describing as an "intimate" setting. It's definitely more intimate than a normal burger restaurant, with dim lighting and isolated booths but what you're wearing isn't going to dictate how other guests and staff feel. I would cover up anyways just cause there was ac running. I told my friend who moved from Nyc to Chicago and he said he felt the same. And one of our couple friends were surprised to hear the patty being dry, so... off day?
Au Cheval is a rusty diner that serves a good burger. What makes their burgers unique is the peppered bacon: it's hand-cut in-house and is as thick as their burger patties. Their "single" cheeseburger is actually a double cheeseburger, and their "double" cheeseburger is actually a triple -- makes no sense, but that is their naming convention. Bacon is extra. Fried egg is extra. Even fries is extra. I got a "double" cheeseburger + bacon + fries and it ended up being $40, which is a lot for burger and fries (1 star off). I enjoyed my bacon burger, but probably would hit another delicious and heart attack-inducing burger joint next time given the hefty price tag here. Need to save enough money for that cardiac bypass.
Often recognized as having the most recognizable and hyped burger in Chicago, Au Cheval is a Gilded-Age inspired diner (opening in 2012), serving up thick freshly made burgers along with a good selection of drinks. The process of getting seated through a busy period, and the service throughout was excellent. But as often happens with me, the food didn't live up to the hype. My wife and I were picking up my brother and his son from O'Hare at around 10 am on a Saturday. We had dinner plans with our uncle, but had not planned anything in between. The flight came in on time, and once confirmed we all had the time, my brother suggested going to Chicago to try Au Cheval. He knew about their location LV, but none of us had tried their original location in Chicago. So we drove into Chicago, arriving at the restaurant at 11 (it opens at 10am). There was a check-in stand set-up outside, where someone was taking names/phone numbers to put on the waiting list. We were quoted a 45 minute wait, and got the text to hurry back after about 30 minutes. There was a line to put your name down on the list, so we skipped that by going right in. The friendly hostess seated us in a booth, with a nice view of the kitchen where they were making the burgers in mass. The waitress explained that a single burger meant two patties (each patty is 4 oz, so basically a half pound burger), and a double meaning three. My brother and his son both ordered a double cheeseburger ($19.99 each), and I got a single with added sunny side up egg ($21.48). I wanted my wife to be able to take a bite, so asked for everything to be on the side (sauce, dill pickle slices, and grilled onion bits). We also ordered french fries ($8.99), cooked in duck fat. In the meanwhile, followed a fellow yelpers suggestion and got two Allagash Whites ($9 each) for me and my nephew. It's a really good beer that I've had many times during happy hour, and goes great with rich, greasy food. My wife got something else: the General Janes Chicken, which is their version of Korean Fried Chicken ($24.98). She enjoyed it (the coating was still crispy, and the sauce had that pronounced kochujang flavor that we like). Everything is a la carte here (except for the complementary pickle spear with burgers), so she shared in the ordered fries. Food came out together and was served hot. There is a mandatory 3.25% surcharge, and payment is taken at the table. As mentioned, service was excellent throughout. To be honest, I'm not the right person to judge a burger like this (I like it backyard style, with a lot of lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles...and mayo/ketchup). But my brother and nephew are (they have tried many, many burgers all across the world, and don't like too much toppings on their burger), and they said the burger was just OK for them. I liked the frites (cooked in duck fat)...very light in color, but still crispy on the outside. However, nobody else really ate them, saying they weren't great. It's unusual for me to be the least critical after dining, but I'm sure it had something to do with the observation that I didn't have to pay for it (since it was my brother's treat).
No good vegan options :( I got the green salad and added avocado (paid extra just for 30% of an avocado) and extra dressing. Overpriced salad for sure. Also the outdoor seating was horrible. No umbrellas so we were melting under the hot sun the whole time. My friends enjoyed the fries but said the burger lacked veggies.
Au Cheval lives up to the hype. They only cooked the burger one way and I would say it's probably something along the lines of a medium. The single is actually a double patty burger and a double is actually a triple patty burger I went with the double and added the egg and the bacon, which I understand is the most classic. I was afraid the bacon would be a little tough, but he was absolutely not. He was closer to pork belly and just pulled apart easily. The hashbrowns were a bit salty for my taste, but were perfectly crispy and a little cheesy it seemed. Keylime was very good too. If I were to return, I would do the burger, the same get the Keylime and maybe try a different side. For sure a return.
We were heavily recommended this place by a friend and boy it was worth it. We showed up on a Sunday around noon, only had a 45min wait, which was not bad at all compared to our original attempt on Friday night! We were seated near where I could watch the line work, which I appreciated as someone in the food industry. Our server was extremely friendly and helpful, explaining the quirks of the menu as well as his own suggestions for us to try. The burgers themselves were amazing. Easily in my top 5 favorite restaurant style burgers of all time. The tender peppered bacon is the perfect touch for these burgers. If you can withstand the wait, it's truly a wonderful time at Au Cheval.
It's burger time! I was so excited to come experience the Au Cheval burger. I must tell you, I love burgers, but I love big juicy flavorful burgers. The patties here, are very thin. They put a double patty, with the delicious caramelized, bacon and egg. It makes up for the tiny little patties that you experience with your burger. The service is outstanding. I'm gonna tell you, quick and very efficient. I really wanted to like these thin, tiny patties, but I just couldn't. However... I always like me some skin on french fries.
Au Cheval does not need anymore positive reviews and is a classic staple of Chicago, and one of my favorite burgers of all time. You will need to either come off hours for a shorter wait, or be prepared to wait for several hours. It's nice that you can be texted when your table is ready, because there are so many other restaurants and bars you can kill time at before coming back for your beloved burger. A warning that the standard burger already comes with two patties, so if you get an extra patty it is a total of 3. Definitely add the delicious thick cut peppered bacon to the burger (and I am not even usually a bacon person), and the egg if you want a bit of extra goo. We've also tried the fried chicken which was delicious, but if your mind is set on just burger, I'd recommend sticking to that. If you are with a small group that wants a bit of variety and is willing to share burgers, I'd recommend adding the chicken.
Enjoyed lunch here when we touched down in Chicago. The restaurant was quite busy, which is always a good sign. The inside of the restaurant is a bit compact, but super friendly. Great music was playing the entire time, which had me rocking in my seat. Our server was super nice and helpful with the menu. We went for the single cheeseburger and the bologna sandwich. Both were good, but the burger waa wAaay better in my opinion. A must try, and you only need a single. We added bacon, with the egg, Soo good. I took off one star because I think the burger is a bit pricey, and the bologna wasn't all that. Otherwise this place was legit and I'd definitely return.
Au Cheval was solid overall. The burger absolutely lived up to the hype, and the fries and root beer were great as well. I deducted a star because of the service. Our waitress forgot to put in our appetizer order, which is understandable and mistakes happen. After we finished our burgers, she brought us our check. We kindly reminded her that we were still waiting on our chicken to come out. She apologized and said she would bring us an order of chicken to go. She comped the chicken, which I appreciated. However, as tourists, we were looking forward to enjoying the full meal in the restaurant. Since there were several open tables at the time, it felt a little strange to be encouraged toward takeout instead of being able to stay and enjoy the appetizer there. Having to walk to the hotel with the chicken also noticeably affected the quality and overall experience. Overall, the food was great, but the service experience kept it from being a five-star visit.

I've eaten here multiple times over the years, and I always try to visit whenever I'm in Chicago either for work or fun. The cheeseburger really is pretty amazing, but other menu items I've tried like the honey-fried chicken, kale caesar, matzah ball soup, crispy hash browns are all excellent. If you're a first timer, definitely get the cheeseburger (single has 2 patties), with egg and bacon. On subsequent visits, I can actually forgo the egg and bacon and just focus on a double cheeseburger (4 patties!). read more

High expectations going in based on the Yelp reviews and was also recommended this place. The burger did not disappoint! I've heard this place has a long wait time to be seated, but luckily I came on a rainy day later at night. The inside is pretty small - half bar, half sit down area. It's pretty dimly lit during the evening/night time I guess to set the mood. Service was excellent. I ordered a single (really it's a double) with cheese, egg, pickles, some type of mayo/mustard sauce, and THICK slices of bacon. First bite was so juicy, and the egg held up for the most part. Really tasty hamburger and fries. This is an excellent place for a burger and fries. A bit on the greasy side for me, but that's what makes a good hamburger I suppose. Definitely a cheat meal if you're not used to eating unhealthy. read more

I gave this place 2 stars because of the wait + the food didn't live up to the hype. I'm sorry, but to wait 2 and a half hours for this food is just not worth it. There is only a single burger option. I have gladly waited in line for hours for food, and usually when the wait is that long, you quickly see why. I feel like at au cheval I never understood what exactly was taking so long, not did I feel the whole experience merited the weight. Their menu doesn't have that many options, and most people are going for the burger, so it's not like people need a lot of time to decide what they are going to eat. The ambiance in the place is nice, albeit very small, maybe it's time they look for a bigger location to accommodate more guests? The food itself (specifically the burger) just isn't worth it. I feel like If I have to wait HOURS for your food, I better be telling everyone they need to try it once in their life. But there is really nothing memorable about this burger. It's big, and it's hard to finish, that's about it. Oh yea, it's also super salty. Maybe people who never had well-seasoned food thinks this is what makes it taste so good? The reason this review doesn't have 1 star is because of the Bacon. The bacon is seriously good, it's a shame though because you don't even really get to taste it on the burger itself. MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN CHICAGO! Always a must when I'm in town. The wait for dinner and on weekends is usually long, however for lunch on a weekday you'd expect to wait around 20-30 minutes at most. I usually order the bone marrow and cheeseburger here. The food is quite heavy and usually puts me in a food coma afterwards but it's so delicious. The burger itself is pretty big, I would recommend splitting a burger and ordering some more sides to get the chance to try out everything :) read more

Hands down the best burger I have ever had. My husband loves trying burgers and he was speechless. The "single" is actually a double so be hungry! This burger melts in your mouth. The cheese, the sauce, and the meat! YUM!! Everything about it is incredible. The fries with garlic aioli are amazing on there own! Did not care for the other sauce with them though. Can't wait to go back here! If you're looking to try this burger and don't want to wait, we went on a Sunday right when they opened. No wait at all for 2! So worth checking this spot out. read more

This is definitely a good burger. It might even make your top 5. Although it was tasty, I got the plain burger with the beef and fried egg, and it really was not special. After waiting three hours in a local coffee shop nearby, I would really expect this to blow my mind but it was like just a good burger. The fries we ordered were good additions. They definitely have their technique down, but I would not wait this long for an Au Cheval burger again. It felt like we were in and out, which makes sense due to the wait, but it was not an extraordinary dining experience with extraordinary food, so don't have enormous expectations but do expect a good burger out of it. We waited this long because we were Chicago tourists, but I would not imagine the average city dweller to have the time to wait for this unless they were showing someone around. read more
Au Cheval serves some delicious burgers in a really cool atmosphere. It's definitely in the top ten burgers I've ever had in my life. Is it worth a three to four hour wait for dinner? It depends, do you have something else to do between putting in your reservation and your meal? It's absolutely not worth standing there and doing nothing (very few things are) while you wait, but it's worth putting in your name early, leaving to do something, and then coming back to eat. That's what we did. On a Saturday night, our friend put in our name for a table for 4 at 4:00 PM. We came back around 6:30 PM when the app said that our table was coming up, and then we were ultimately seated at 7:00 PM. I would've died waiting outside and been very grumpy, but since we did something in the meantime, it was totally fine. The burger itself is really delicious. I got the double cheeseburger with bacon and egg (had to go all out knowing this was a 3 hour wait for this) and fries. I regret nothing about my meal. The burger is really simple, but really good. It's incredibly juicy, and they didn't even ask how I wanted it cooked. It was just done their way, and that way was the right way. Expect to spend about $20-$25/person here. It's darker inside than I would've thought, but it's a really cool ambiance that invites good conversation. It's loud and lively, so it's somewhere in between being in your neighborhood restaurant and a bar in terms of the volume levels. You'll talk louder than normal, but in a good way. After your long wait, you'll get your burger, down it, and be done with your meal well within an hour. It's a crazy long wait, but plan out your day accordingly, and then you can say you've been to Au Cheval and had a top ten burger in your life. read more

Heard this was a must stop in Chi. We put our names in around noon for 6 people. About a 3 hour wait but we just hopped around to some of the bars/breweries super close. I am rating my experience mostly around what they are know for and that is the burger with bacon and an egg. Overall I thought it was tasty, but also salty! And in combination with salty fries. I just didn't see that coming with all the salt. The bacon on its own is good. Now the fried chicken was IT! I'm a southerner, so trust me about the chicken. It was juicy inside and crispy on the outside. The flavor had a good sweet/spicy balance. I would get the chicken over the burger. I have had better burgers and fries for cheaper...and way way way less salty. I'm sorry but the cook was on demon time with that salt. Lol Went around 4pm, wait was 2 hours, which is understandable as a first time visitor. However, I wouldn't wait 2 hours again. It looked good though. read more
(tourist review) What's Good: Cheeseburger is top notch, one of the best we've ever had. The additional Egg and Bacon is a must. With French Fries on the side (comes with Mornay sauce), it's a recipe for a sluggish afternoon. If you're extra hungry, then the Foie Gras, with scrambled eggs and toast, is delicious. Other Notes: it's located in West Loop which is a little away from central downtown area, but well worth a trip for a meal in this area. To shake off the food coma, take a walk to Sawada Coffee - chill and creative Japanese coffee spot. Other notable places to eat nearby are Girl and the Goat (just across the street) and McDonald's headquarter where you can order from a global menu (about half a mile down). read more
Au cheval has been on my foodie bucket list for years and I finally had to the chance to go this summer. They don't take make ahead reservations and waits can be up to 4 hours so make sure you go early! I stopped by to put my name down with a friend at 4pm and we were told it would be a 2 hour wait so we went to get nails done around the corner and were able to check out place in line on our phones. There is plenty to do in the area to kill time. The wait is 100% worth it. This was the BEST burger I have ever had with the BEST bacon on top. The fries were also delicious and I recommend pairing it with an Alagash white from the bar. I wish that I had room to eat another burger. Au Cheval is an amazing establishment with extremely friendly and attentive wait staff. I was lucky enough to sit at the bar and watch the chefs cook right in front of me while I ate. Pro tip 1: don't even try calling for a reservation (or to ask a question), because they don't even bother to pick up their phone. Pro tip 2: don't be deceived by the short lines when you arrive. That's because 100+ people already put their names before you and just left because you'll get an estimate of 4-5 hours waiting time. *Jaw drop* Pro tip 3: If you have a small group (1-2 people), you have the option of snagging a spot at one of the six open seating at the bar. You'll just have to hover over people like flies though! However, keep your name on the waiting list! Pro tip 4: A single burger is a double patty, a double burger is a triple patty! You know how most girls go burger places and try to share something? Well, at Au Cheval, EVERYONE gets their own burger. That's how "to die for" it is! Allen and I both got a DOUBLE burger, with BACON and SUNNY SIDE UP EGG. The price is very reasonable- I think it's around $17-$18 per burger (check out the photo of the menu, still in a food coma to not care about the price). +1 #EGGPORN. I love how delicate the egg was! Egg white was perfect, and the egg yolk was so good! If you sit at the bar, you can see that they cook the egg in a little egg skillet and really control the temperature. +1 #BACONEVERYTHING. I usually hate bacon, but this bacon has made me regain hope! Maybe because it's thick-cut, but the sauce on it is so delicious! It made the burger have an extra crunch but it was still so juicy! Wow, I just salivated thinking about it... +1 #3JUICY. Okay, my hashtags are just not cutting it. BUTTTT the meat was perfectly cook, not going to lie about it. Eveyr bite was consistent, no charring, and it was cooked medium-well (FYI- that's default). The 3 patty was pretty intimidating, but I FINISHED IT. +1 #SAUCE. It was an okay mayo sauce, but balanced well with the other players. A lot of people here also get fries (SUPER fresh! You see it prepped in the containers!) but we were just trying to finish our burger. There was a lot of flavor in the burger, but luckily I did not have a bad sodium reaction to it after. (I did have to chug 3 bottles of water though, during the meal...) Come here if you can! Dinner is probably a different experience from lunch, but part of the fun is waiting, right?? read more

Best burger I have EVER had! Honestly, we were skeptical when seeing how many burgers they were churning out so quickly. But we were sold with our first bite. These burgers were juicy, well seasoned, cooked to perfection. They have really perfected every aspect of this dish. We had to go back a second time before our quick weekend trip to Chicago was over - unfortunately a long wait time with both visits, but so worth it the wait! read more

I've heard really good things about this place and I wanted so badly to like it, but the experience was anti climactic. A few notable mentions: a single cheeseburger actually come with two patties, which is so weird. Why wouldn't you just label it as is? Not sure, but almost made the mistake of ordering a double cheeseburger (which would've been 3 patty's). In total, there were 2/3 lunch menu items. You could get a burger or some fried chicken. They are known for their famous burgers, so the limited options could be due to this reason. The waiter also had to go out of his way to explain what was still in stock because they frequently run out of dishes. My egg on my loaded fries was also cooked mostly through, which was sad because I was excited to break it open over the fries. The atmosphere was also very loud and I found myself having to yell to talk to my friends. Overall, not the experience I expected, but I will say service was quick for a Saturday lunch rush. read more

Rated the #1 best burger in America! Do I agree??? Noooo!! LOL Yesssss! This place rocks! Make sure you are strategic when you go because the wait time can be over and hour, I went at 2pm on weekday and got in, in less than 15 minutes. You have to have the burger with egg. They have the burger building down to a craft. The burger was juicy, velvety with the added egg and the fries were the perfect compliment. The humble burger doesn't get the most cred when it comes to higher end food (maybe this is less of an issue in the Midwest, where there's some quality American food IMO). HOWEVER Au Cheval quickly throws that stereotype out of the window. The patty was juicy, rich, flavorful and perfectly paired with the thick cut of bacon. Tbh I don't even like bacon usually because I think of it as greasy and unhealthy, but the beef and bacon both pull their weight in making this a 5 star experience. What's awesome is that the burger wasn't messy either despite all the juicy goodness (and runny egg) waiting between the buns. Lives up to the hype! Also got the Bone Marrow to switch things up which was also good but a little on the heavy side - especially if you order both. The burger is the star of the show here. I came at an awkward hour (2:30pm) on a weekday so there was no wait and would highly recommend doing the same if possible! I was definitely underwhelmed by this place after all the hype. We got the single cheeseburger (which to our surprise has two patties) with bacon (which is super thick cut) and an egg. The bacon and egg cost extra. We also got the bologna sandwich. In my opinion, the bologna sandwich was more unique than the burger, but both were super salty and made me feel like I had a heart attacking waiting to happen. Overall it was good, but not as great as everyone had made it out to be, and I definitely wouldn't consider it the best burger in Chicago, much less the country. Yes, they most certainly have outdoor setting and will likely accommodate pets outside.
How long is the wait in the evening?
It was about 35 min for a party of 4. But outside seating was available immediately.

Yes. They have French fries and they also have chicken.

Not sure but, our waiter ASKED if we had any allergies to certain foods .

Haymarket is a great option. It's not necessarily quiet but not super loud.

There's a couple bars in the area, give them your number...go grab a couple of drinks and they'll text you when your spot is ready

We had a party of 8 and they just had us split up into groups of 4 in the booths. They could probably accommodate 8 at the tables but the wait will be very long

You have to go in person to be put on the list and they page you with two hours usually for seating.
Do fries come with the Single Burger or does that need to be purchased separately?
Everything is a la carte
Has the wait time gone down due to COVID? Have they started taking reservations online?
I don’t know. My friend was the one who picked up our order and he called in advance. My only suggestion is to either call in advance or possibly ordering online if you’re doing takeout.
