Breakfast - The griddle, fruits, cereals and healthy choices
Lou C.

A friend on Yelp recommended me to host a brunch to gather more Yelpers to try out Brunches in the city. Since I am not a morning person, I sure missed what everyone is bragging about. Yeah. I want to try everything at least once. Especially, this Avalon Diner on Katy Freeway is easily accessible from the loop. I am not far from this "The Villages" location. I first learned about Avalon Diner was from my friends who live on the Katy side. But that restaurant has been closed for quite some time. I came here few weeks ago during lunchtime. Restaurant was about half full. I ate a 1938 Drug Store Burger. It was really tasty. So you asked, why 1938 and Drug Store? According to its website, the original restaurant was a food stand inside of a drug store established in 1938. The burger was the item sold back then. Who wouldn't want to have a taste of history? It's the top of the menu, you can't miss it. That was me trying a new restaurant. I look from the top because waitress recommended me so many items to try. According to the cashier, this Avalon Diner has been at its location for 30 years. Everything still looking pretty good. My most recent visit was a group of friends gathered to celebrate the Pride Month. I ordered Migas with Chorizos and Grits. Oh. My. Gosh. It was so good. One of my friends had to leave early. So, he ordered a Speedy-Gonzales breakfast (not sure what they are but I took a picture). It came out so quick, we couldn't even finish talking about the weather. My other friend ordered an omelet. She explained what was in there but my eyes were staring at the humongous portion of food. Hahaha. One of the good things is that waitress helped us to split the bills to the individual level. I wanted to make sure the waitstaff gets a fair share of tips, I asked to pay for one of my guest and added above my standard percentage. Me and two friends arrived at 9 am. There was still plenty of seats to choose from. By the time we left, all tables were all taken and had people waiting at the front. Because it's listed as a LGBT-friendly restaurant on Google, I wanted to help promote the idea of supporting local businesses with the same message. I also have requests to host more brunch events. Avalon Diner is on my book and I look forward to try the one oldest location in the River Oaks area.

So the seating is odd. You basically walk in and the lady at the front tells you how many people are in front of you and you all just wait for people to leave and than take the table you want. She could actually seat you but that would too much work for her. The food was really good. French toast was cooked perfectly and eggs done really well. Biscuit was super fluffy and good. Loved the sausage. Coffee however was really bad. Next time a Diet Coke for me. :). All in all would totally go back

Diner with old school vibes. Our food was great and so was the service. Lots of choices to pick from. Try the breakfast sausage and macaroni... lol not together just mentioning some of my favorites.

We love Sunday breakfast at Avalon! They have that classic diner feel, complete with coffee and good food ! I can't believe I haven't left a review before since we come here so often! Parking: There's plenty of parking since it's located In a small shopping center. There's handicap spots and a ramp almost right in front. Seating: Though the diner is on the smaller side, there's a good amount of seating options split between booths and tables. The booth seating can be a bit cramped/narrow. Wait: We've never had to wait but also usually have breakfast pretty early (830am on sunday). If you come around 10am you may be in for a wait. Food: The food is great! Served warm and fast too. I usually get a breakfast plate but today decided to try something different. The eggs and grits were good as always, but I was disappointed with the chicken fried chicken. It's not actually on the menu, but the waitress said they could make it since they make chicken fried steak (which is on the menu). Unfortunately the chicken just didn't taste quite right for me, but someone in my group got the steak and said it was great. I'll be sticking to my usual breakfast options next time. They do also serve lunch Bathrooms: The bathrooms are pretty basic/exactly what youd expect. There's just one stall so you may have to wait.

If you like char toast this may very well be your go-to spot.

Slow service. Burnt toast. Super fatty bacon. Eggs were cold because they couldn't seem to find any silverware. Pancakes never showed. Coffee is not to current - or really any - standards. Never underestimate the power of a habit - people go because its' familiar. But they shouldn't. Seriously. And don't even get me talking about the pieces of rock hard melon that are supposed to be a fruit cup.

ROACH COOKED INTO MY FOOD. MANAGER ACTED UNSURPRISED.

A great burger spot coming from someone who doesn't eat lots of burgers so take that how you'd like…read more When you walk in you take a clipboard to customize your selection (beef burger, turkey burger, fish, etc.) and then take that to the register to pay. I had opted for a beef burger with a side of chili cheese tater tots to share. The burger is quite large and filled generously with whatever add-ins you check off so it was very filling for me. I went with two 2oz patties, but considering the size, I'd opt for a single 2 oz patty if I go back. For my burger I also added scallion aioli which didn't have a strong green onion flavor but was still nice and added creaminess to the burger overall. The tater tots were super crispy, and the chili cheese topping was nice. I had gone shortly after they opened and it wasn't super busy but it started to quickly fill up around 11:30-12. Decent amount of tables and good parking situation outside

I was extremely excited to give this place a shot and, after failing to try it about a month ago…read moredue to them being out of falafel patties, I finally got to try it this past weekend and honestly I was very much underwhelmed (I even called before going to make sure they hadn't run out of falafel patties this time). To start off with a positive, I thought the falafel patty had a really great taste and was absolutely the highlight of the burger. But outside of that the burger and the toppings I ordered just didn't work as well as I would've liked. I ordered my burger with mushrooms and sauteed onions, both toppings I know I absolutely love from making burgers at home and from other spots, but neither added much. At first I was worried that the falafel was overpowering them both but upon eating them by themselves they just lacked taste. We also got the scallion aioli on the burger and I never got a hint of it at any point. All in all, the burger was very much mediocre outside of the patty. We also got fries with the burger and while they absolutely had some potential they were extremely over seasoned. Any appreciation for the seasonings in a vacuum was immediately overshadowed by how salty they were. We also ordered the Sambal Mayo as a dipping sauce and while it did help subdue the insane salt level and overall tasted quite good, upon writing this review I found out by looking at their online menu that it contained some amount of shrimp. This information is nowhere to be seen on the ordering slip and wasn't mentioned when I handed it over to the person working at the cash register. And while I definitely accept some level of responsibility for not doing my due diligence and asking or letting them know of my dietary restrictions, it's still an extremely frustrating thing to have happen as both a vegetarian and someone with a mild shellfish allergy. If for whatever reason the online menu is out of date or I missed an obvious indication of it containing shrimp somewhere I am more than happy to edit my review.

I went with the Double Good Burger at Johnny Good Burger, and honestly... it was surprisingly good. Perfectly smashed patties with those crispy edges, juicy inside, and well-balanced flavors that didn't feel overcomplicated. Sometimes simple just works--and this definitely did. The fries deserve their own shoutout: extra crispy, hot, and downright addictive. No soggy sadness here. I kept telling myself "just one more" until the tray was mysteriously empty. All in all, a very satisfying burger experience. If you're in the mood for a legit smash burger and happen to be wandering POST Houston, this one's absolutely worth stopping for.

There were no other customers at the time, but that's to be expected for a slow Monday. The menu is quite simple with just 4 different entrees, 3 different ways to order fries, and a few soft drink options in a cold case. Everything here is a la carte but there is a combo option where you can save about $3 off the regular menu pricing. I chose the "Double Good" and added a patty for $3 more figuring the patties are most likely very thin. The burger comes with lettuce, onion tomato, pickles and special sauce. I subbed the American for Swiss, but the Swiss ended up being a Swiss-American blend, so it tasted mostly like American cheese which I hate. I keep having bad luck with Swiss lately. The patty is about 1/4 lb and tastes similar to a home cooked burger. I ended up setting the burger down and just eating the patty with a fork since I didn't like the taste of the cheese, sauce, or the entire burger as a whole after a handful of bites. Overall, I'm glad I finally tried it but this is not a burger I would come back for, especially at this price point.

A standard smashed Double cheeseburger and generous extra crispy impressively seasoned waffle fries as you want it cost $16 which is fair since adding the fries vs standalone burger is only $1 price differential. Clutch City Grill sits next to Burger Chan (the most recent title holder of best burger for my son) but this Sunday, they were not open so we tried the one we didn't try last time--CCG. And let me just say that this place tucked away inside a collective indoor food concession aka The Conservatory Galleria, has every right to boldly don the clutch city burger title. Inside this perfectly grilled almost Hawaiian role type hint of sweet homemade bun is a masterclass of burger perfection, made right in front of you and to your liking based on your selections from the order tap screens. While, waiting, I looked at everything I didn't order as it was being served and I'm almost certain that anything you order at CCG is delicious. Presentation is superb because others were sitting with large selections in front of them that caused me a bit of buyers remorse--I couldn't decide. The vibe is chill enough to talk to the grill master while my son was figuring out his massive burger order--he randomly had a hash brown added to a patty melt. And ordered something to take home or in case one order wasn't enough for the teen appetite. But the food is massive. I cannot stress that enough. Portions of everything there are beyond generous from what we saw and this is the kind of place where there's delivery guys picking up, people working on their laptops and the average joe grabbing takeout after work as well as families having dinner but not crowded. We sat and reflected on a great shopping day in a chill environment and reminisced on the old days of Galleria area last minute back to school night before/we should do this more type of memories in the making. The take something to go plus my own leftover (cutting the burger in half is an open from the order touch screen) and it passed the ultimate test of being really good cold the next day. This place begs the question--where is everybody? I can't be the only one who knows about it. But also was inviting enough to silently confirm that I think we've found our place. One that even has a cool bathroom with a mirror that says "you look amazing." Exactly how you're going to feel about the food that looks even better than it does in its promo photos

Burger wise, this place is just a well executed classic burger. Big, juicy, fresh toppings, honestly nothing to complain about. The onion rings were some of the best that I've had recently, and I ordered their "Texas size steak sandwich" to go as well for dinner, very filling.
