Great place. Ashok, the host is a very hospitable and warm person. He has been in the food industry for 27 years and cooks the tastiest of dishes in a short time. Always amazing. Last time I was there I had eggplant with minced lamb rice plate. The pumpkin curry is killer. The owner is always such a delight. I don't think I've ever had anything to go there because I eat every last drop. Their sister place in DT MV is also just as good, great value for very satisfying food. Went here on a whim while driving around Sausalito. We reached around 5 mins before closing time in the afternoon and were seated on the bar. So we went to Avatar for birthday celebration! A group of 10. This place is just too cramped. It's fine for a party of 4, any group size above that I would recommend a split seating. Ashok the owner cum service manager is a ball of energy and tad cheeky about the food he serves. His pride in explaining the food and understanding pallet is much appreciated but he can get a bit cocky. We ordered samosas which were just about okay. And so was my entree of Smoked eggplant enchiladas with sea bass. I was super disappointed with what was served to me. It didn't do justice to the Indian or the Mexican flavours. I think the traditional Indian fare is the winner in the menu. My Hubby Ordered the chicken curry and he was happy with his meal. Wow, the New Zealand lamb curry was great. I have another favorite Bay Area dish. We also shared the smoked eggplant enchilada, which was good, but I made the mistake of tasting the curry first and the enchilada paled by comparison. If you share a second dish, I recommend eating it first, before the lamb. I often complain there are few excellent restaurants in Marin. This is one. read more

So I would say this place has good food and the atmosphere is nice. The owner served us. He also seemed very nice and genuinely passionate about his product. But I have an issue. My wife and I went to Avatar's tonight, showing up at about 2 minutes until 9. They close at 9:30. My wife worked in food service a long time so we never show up anywhere later than twenty minutes before they close. Half an hour preferably. When we walked in there were two other tables eating. He delivered our menus and returned about two minutes later. I did not have time to put on my reading glasses and even read the menu. I literally did not have time to read the menu. My wife already knew what she wanted as she had read rave reviews about the enchiladas. She ordered. He looked at me. I wasn't ready. It had literally been two minutes! He looked at his kitchen guys and said something along the lines of, "We're getting ready to close. My guys want to go home." I felt very rushed. I was going to say give me two more minutes. He said, "How about I choose for you?". I was a bit surprised and said okay. He picked something and as I felt like my mere presence was a problem and my wanting to actually read the menu at some place I had never been before was me being a nuisance, I obliged. What he picked sounded fine. But it wasn't what I picked. And it was not really what I wanted. But I didn't have time to do anything but accept his choice. His guys wanted to go home. Our visit was obviously about his guys and not about my wife and I exploring his establishment. My wife loved her enchiladas. I liked my meal okay but it simply was not what I wanted to eat. I wasn't in the mood for it. I got up and grabbed a menu to take the two minutes I was denied previously to see what I would have ordered had I not been pressured to have someone else order for me. And I did see it! It was exactly the thing I was looking for though I didn't know it. Because I was not granted the necessary time to read the menu. We paid and a few minutes later got up to leave. One of the tables that were seated when we walked in was still seated. We're usually quick when we come in late. This place is small. The owner and his guys were sitting at a counter maybe eight feet from us. We got up and walked to the door and walked out. Never did he say thanks for coming in and hope to see you again or actually anything at all. So all in all I would call this a massively unsatisfying experience and a complete waste of money. Yes, when I go out to eat part of the reason I do that is to eat food. But a large part of the reason is to experience the atmosphere of the place and the people and also to read the menu! To actually see with my own eyes what they have on offer. And we go out to eat so that we can, and this is very important, appreciate and be appreciated. The owner's demeanor and communications with us expressed zero appreciation for our presence in his establishment. No time to read the menu. No thanks for coming in. Nothing. What I got from him was that he was passionate about the food he makes and has an appreciation for himself and for his establishment. But no appreciation for us as customers. There was no sense of customer service. I was not served. I was processed as quickly as possible and allowed to leave as quickly as possible without any thanks or acknowledgment at all. So the experience quite frankly sucked. It was a waste of my time and my money. The places I remember most are the ones with the nicest people like Victor at El Metate in the mission who we met two weeks ago. He was so friendly and so appreciative that we came to his establishment and we in turn appreciated him. And that's one of the places I absolutely have to go back to. Because of Victor. And of course the food was good. But Victor was great. I got value out of that meal and it wasn't just nutrition. I did get nutritional value out of my meal at Avatar and I would say the food was good but I got no other value out of it. It was disappointing but going out to eat is a gamble. Food is very mediocre for an Indian cuisine restaurant. Also, the food served for the price feels like a half serving. For a $12 fried prawns appetizer, we got 4 medium sized prawns served with some veggie on the side. If it had a unique and fresh taste, I would not have said anything. Easily one of the best places I have been in a long time. I found it when searching online and read some of the good reviews. We stayed in Sausalito for the week and after the first time I went I had to come here again. Amazing food with fantastic flavors and the service is phenomenal. Kindness matters so much and this place has no short of it. I also have a very bad gluten allergy and they can make the food however you need it (gluten free, no dairy, etc.) with no cross contamination. Went here after a hike at Muir woods. While the food was excellent, the service was just phenomenal. We were a group of 8, got seated quick. The kids food got taken care of first within 5 mins whick kept the parents happy. The owner engaged with everyone and defines "service with a smile". I've had the lamb & the chicken enchiladas, samosas, and a indian style lamb dish and all was excellent. But the icing on the cake as that the staff are the friendliest, most welcoming bunch around. Over hyped. I dont understand whats the big deal with Avatars. They are located in Sausalito where there is a very small Indian (from India) population. Maybe the folks who live around there dont know what Indian cooking is like and might consider this the best Indian food but in reality its far from it. The ambience is good though the place is a little too small and crammped. Ashok and team (you can get their names if you have to wait for a table from the collage of pics near the entrance) are friendly and greeted us with a smile. Sifting through the menu we decided to order the Rose Mango Dreams - ravioli stuffed with spinach in mango and rose petal sauce. Ashok came by to take our order, gave us a 30 sec explanation on the concept of the restaurant where in they just ask the customer what would they like to eat and customize the food according to their suggestions. After letting him know we want the ravioli, he asked us a few questions on what type of meat, level of spicy, and the mood that we are in, he said he has an idea on what we want and let him surprise us. I thought he would talk to the cook to customise our order, but apparently this is something they do regularly where in they make the customers think that their food is customized but serve out the regular stuff from the menu and overcharge $6-7/plate for "customising" our order. He didnt write out our order and scribbled on a peice of paper for 2 secs and just stuck our order on the stove for the cook and left without even talking to him to "customise" our order. I have read previous reviews where they scam customers with their customizing trick and overcharge them. Instead of the ravioli we got the standard Punjabi enchiladas, and Rice with lean ground lamb. The menu price for these is $11.95 and $12.95 on the menu respectively but since he picked it out for us, he charged us $15.95 and $18.95 respectively. Foodwise both these were definitely not worth the price. Tasteless, bland and nowhere close to anything special. I tried to evaluate the food but it just deserved no merit. And this was the most popular stuff they served out there. We just finished our food and were ready to get out of this place to not come here ever again. I can understand that being one of the very few so-called Indian food places around, folks living close by have no other choice. If you go, always insist ordering from the menu and dont fall for their customizing trick. read more

Avatar's is my favorite place to eat anywhere. As if it isn't enough that the food is: - creative. I mean, pumpkin enchiladas with a chutney sauce? - delicious. Between the enchiladas, and the ravioli, what a treat! - filling. In a world of shrinking portions, a single entree here always has me stuffed. - well presented. Order the samosas, and watch as they swirl the chutney on the plate for a great aesthetic. As if all this wasn't enough, the staff (particularly Ashok) absolutely rules. We've been there after a multiple-year hiatus, and not only did he remember us, but, just as always, he also remembered our dietary restrictions, and our favorite dishes. We sit down, and he tells us what we were going to order. Never gets it wrong. They are also genuinely nice people, and feed hundreds of homeless every Thanksgiving. These guys should be the model of how to run a restaurant. When you go, don't bother looking at the menu. Describe your taste preferences, any dietary restrictions, and Ashok will come up with something to blow you away. read more

Indian Mexican fusion? Hmmm...was my first thought. Then we went in and tried the place. The owner is super upbeat and friendly. These people work really hard to produce some really unique dishes and a great experience. My wife and I enjoyed our Jamaican Jerk Chicken and Fetuccini Curry dishes. But this place really deserves it- I am an Indian who does not like Indian food, and I really don't love Mexican food either...but I LOVED this restaurant! My suggestions- got for the pumpkin enchilada, and if you have the guts, you should let the owner pick the rest of your meal- you will love whatever he decides on for you because he really has talented taste buds. O.K., I was prepared to be skeptical, but ... And I worry that I will lack credibility because most of my restaurant reviews are positive. That's mainly because I hate to give negative reviews, so I tend not to review places where I've had a less than stellar experience. All that being said, I have to rate this place as excellent. Although I've lived in Sausalito for years, I had never tried Avatar's. I kept meaning to, but life was busy and I was a little put off by its location in what is essentially a mini-mall. This week, I had family visiting from out of state and mentioned that I'd been meaning to try Avatar's for years; they persuaded me to take them on their last night in California. It was a total hit. It is not a fancy restaurant. It's not cheap, though I think it is quite reasonable for Sausalito. The service was excellent, but the restaurant is little and crowded. Its charm is circumscribed by the fact that it's in a mini-mall. But -- and this is what counts -- the food is really, really good. I mean, sop-up -the-sauce-with-your-samosas good. Really, really good. I tend to like restaurants where I can linger delicately over relatively light, subtle foods, but at Avatar's, I found myself happily shoveling my salmon in curry sauce into my mouth as fast as I could, and enjoying every mouthful. The owner served us. He suggested four specials ... because I'd read all the Yelp reviews, I decided to go with his suggestions. So did everyone else in our party. Among us, we tried the crab-pumpkin enchiladas, the salmon with roast veggies and curry sauce, turkey-something enchiladas and a lamb, mussels and shrimp dish. We also had the vegetarian samosas. Everything was wonderful -- warm, spicy, filing, just quintessentially tasty. I usually do not order anything described as being "in curry sauce" as I find many curries insipid. This one was wonderfully flavorful -- maybe it was the cardamom??? -- who knows. Whatever it was, it was delicious. We also took the owner's suggestion for dessert and shared a few plates of the special, which was a sort of ice cream, pistachio nut and chocolate concoction that was refreshing and wonderfully flavorful. Everyone in our party enjoyed their food, including my mother, who does not like a host of ingredients, including most vegetables, many spices, chick peas, curries, etc., etc. -- anything that is not hamburger, essentially -- and my sister and brother-in-law, who have lived all over the world and who consider themselves supreme "foodies".
