Came here for a lovely dinner. No rsvp but we were able to get a seat, although we were initially seated by the bar. Atmosphere is trendy upscale. Lots of nicely dressed people. We went straight to our entree with the organic chicken and the chilean sea bass, and side of the Spinach rice. The fish and rice was bothering saltiness for me personally but it was still enjoyable. Our drinks were non alcoholic as we planned to go a jazz bar after for drinks. Next time we will get there a bit earlier to get bar seating and prob just sit there. Avra needs no introduction. A NY heavy hitter, this mediterranean restauran is a family favorite. We had a big party and booked a table for lunch. Lunch special is awesome and a total bargain. Appetizer, main, and dessert for a 35-40 bux. Totally worth it! I had the fish of the day, simply grilled with veggies. My fam had different mains from octopus to Kaftas, to fish, to moussaka. Everyone raved about how amazing the food was. For apps we had many things. Avra's olive oil cant be missed. One would drink that thing and be in EVOO heaven :) When dessert time came, our waiter brought 3 sample trays so we could all taste different sweets. Totally thoughtful and a great idea. Impeccable service, a beautiful space (and great ambiance) and great food! We started with the grilled octopus and (especially) the avra chips are both must order items, oh and the oysters were also fantastic. For our main, we split a seasonal fish (I think it might have been dover sole) that was cooked to perfection. Then we capped off dinner with olive oil cake and baklava (to-go). I stopped by here for lunch for 3 courses, expecting to not be that full, but the portions were generous! It was a great deal as well. The branzino and lamb were both cooked perfectly. The salmon tartar and grilled calamari were good as well, but the entrees were the standouts. We tried the strawberry cheesecake and baklava for dessert and enjoyed how it wasn't too sweet. I've been coming to Avra for years, both the Midtown East and Upper East Side locations. My favorite is the UES location, with the huge bar and open, airy space. It's fun to people watch and the food is spectacular. This place is right next to my office, and it is a go-to for the local power lunch. The food is actually pretty good, and the presentation is thoughtful. I also love that there is a huge selection for the lunch special, think 12 dishes to choose from for appetizers and another 12 for entrées, and a small dessert as well for under $30. There's a wide selection of fish in keeping with the Greek theme, and certain things on the menu definitely brought me back to a recent trip to Greece. My lunch companion and I both ordered the fish of the day, which was a white fish that was thoughtfully prepared. It was well cooked, and we both enjoyed it. I got the octopus appetizer, which had a small supplement price, but was worth every penny. The grilled octopus was delicious and juicy, and the bed of onions it was served on was wonderful. I'm giving this three stars off because the service was flat-out rude. I hadn't finished my salad when they tried to plate my fish course. It was too small of a table, so they tried to take the salad away while I was mid-bite. There was still quite a bit on the plate. I thought about letting it go, but I instead told the waiter that I needed more time to finish my salad. He hovered over me while holding my entrée plate. It was super awkward for everybody, but I wasn't going to get bullied into not finishing the salad! It was really good! I am working closely with group of people who want to open their own space so I became very observant of employees and minor details . Mo knows when its better not to interrupt and would stop busser half way when we were in the middle of the saying our withes to bday girl, or taking photos, or more photos:))) We haven't seen each other so our drinks order was very impromptu and not all in once... not a slightest facial expression of disapproval even when Mo walked away and "can be himself" as "no one pay attention to servers anyway". well measured energy equally divided between all his tables. I will stop here. Lets say, Mo is Smooth Operator:))) I shared my honest feedback to that day floor manager while ordering "surprise" desert for our friend (after 30 desert cake no longer a surprise " but !!! I was indeed surprised with desert plate being offered complimentary. Everything from the atmosphere, to the food, down to the service was superb. 100% worth the $400+ spent ( table for two ). Fried Calamari : light, perfectly fried and the green sauce that accompanied it was divine. Grilled Octopus : I loved the way it was prepared. Sliced thin on an angle, it really made it that much more enjoyable to eat. The octopus had great flavor and a good cook. This plate would be great to share as it was a hefty portion. Grilled Branzino ( not on menu; daily special ) : Lacked nothing! The fish was meaty, very fresh and everything on the plate complimented it well. You could very well order this alone without an appetizer ( light eaters ) Chicken : Good, basic dish. Huge portion Baklava: Wow, chef's kiss !!! Perfect desert to end the night * we had about 6 drinks together which really ran up the bill at $20+ each. The ambiance is very upscale, across from central park and the metropolitan club, certainly prepares you to spend a nice time, very good service and food but prepared to pay for it. We shared the octopus appetizer very good and asked for the 3 lamb chop dishes and the tuna steak.While we asked for the lamb chops well done, it may have been a bit more than that but still juicy and not chewy. The tuna was very tender. For dessert we had the 16 layer chocolate cake, very good. Overall very good quality of food and service but not sure if a bill for $500 for 4 was really worth it. read more

Nice place, great ambience. Came in for late dinner and every member of staff we interacted with, were very nice. I got the grilled salmon and it was absolutely delicious. The complimentary pita that comes for the table was very tasty too. Drinks were good also. They were very busy but we still received our food very quickly. I came here near the end of the summer with two friends, and we each decided to participate in their $30pp restaurant week menu, which included an appetizer, an entree, and dessert for each person. Highlights of the meal were the salmon tartar, the dorado, and the orange cake. The staff was also extremely kind and accommodating, seating us early despite one member of our party being almost twenty minutes late to our reservation.
