Their website tells us the restaurant's dishes are cooked with the same care that Grandma put into her dishes. Eight of us enjoyed a family reunion with the California branch of my family over a great lunch at Baan Yaai. Fittingly, two of our eight members were grandmas! The restaurant's interior is an eclectic mix of vintage advertising signs, vertical wooden-slat wall treatment, various tables and chairs, woven rattan pendant lights, and a counter with a row of stools by the front window. I love Thai food, it's one of my favorite ethnic foods, and my big bowl of soup with a spicy curry, noodles, chicken, onions, bean sprouts and scallions was perfect! It was mildly spiced and that curry/coconut milk flavored broth was absolutely delicious. Be sure to place ALL orders by phone instead of online, as the online store may continue to accept orders and payment even when the store has been closed for the whole day. Meh. Not sure what all the rave is about personally. I have tried this place a few times. Food is good but last two times it really upset my stomach. Also, the last time I ordered for pickup was a disaster. Took longer than estimated over the phone so sat there for 15 minutes. Fine. But then they forgot an item (fresh spring rolls) and called me right when I was about to be home so I went back to get them (not excited) only to get home and find out they were egg rolls (even less excited). The restaurant itself is well-decorated and offers nice counter seating at the window where you can people watch as you tuck into some comforting Thai street food. recs: khao soi price: ~$15/person - Khao Soi: Such a generous portion for the price -- this is easily shareable between two people! The curry soup leans on the thicker side and is very well-seasoned, so it was nice to have some roti on the side to cut the flavor with. This came with a large bundle of fried noodles on top, which tasted so good with the soup. Comes with extra chili and a lime. - Roti: This was surprisingly flaky, almost like a puff pastry. Really cozy and underrated spot in the Marina. I've come a few times to Baan Yaai, often on a weeknight evening post-workout with a friend, and I've always enjoyed my meals here. It's usually not super busy and often there's a family or big group dining in. Green curry here is solid, but the Pad Kee Mao is quite good -- would definitely get that again. Ordered for pickup and ordered pad thai with chicken and the thai style omurice (first time seeing this on a menu in SF so i was super curious!) The pad thai came with a few pieces of tofu and chicken which confused us, and it also was mostly noodles. I would've liked to see more protein. But the serving itself was huge so we saved the leftover noodles for another meal. I liked the crab fried rice -- it had a good amount of crab, but the eggs were not soft scrambled as advertised. Still pretty tasty and the rice was delicious under! And it was also a large serving. I've been here before & it was good but was a little disappointed with my last visit. It could be because I came later in the day closer to closing time but the noodles weren't very hot and tasted a little stale or like they had been left out for a bit. The service was very friendly though so I appreciate that and they were polite about us being there an hour before closing. Two of my friends got the chicken noodle soup because it was a cold day and they finished all of it so that was probably worth trying! Ambiance is great and not too loud. Stopped by on a Friday night for some Thai food. Lombard street can be busy so we were lucky we got seated here without a wait. It wasn't too busy around the time we went (around 7pm). We got the pad thai, tom yum soup, and the sweet roti. We've tried roti before but not a sweetened version, so we were pleasantly surprised by this dish. The tom yum soup was flavorful and tangy. We got it with rice on the side too. Finally, the pad thai was fantastic. The portion sizes for all of the dishes were pretty big for the price. Tom yum soup was a bit too much of tomato flavor instead of the lemongrass fragrant taste. Pad See Ew is Drunken Noodles and was adorned. They didn't use Asian broccoli but regular broccoli for this dish, otherwise, it would have been above notch. One has to ask for their spicy peppers and it complemented well with this dish along with other dishes. Green Curry was yum! Pineapple fried rice was spot on. Stumbled upon this place after being in the Marina and this was a great eat! It's around a 25-minute walk from the Marina but I didn't mind. We were seated immediately inside and it seems to be more like a lunch place rather than a dinner place. - Pad See Ew - This Pad See Ew was pretty good. The egg was covered in soy sauce flavor and the noodles were very tender. I kind of regret not getting it with beef instead but the chicken was wonderful. - Pumpkin Curry - I've never seen Pumpkin Curry at a Thai restaurant before so I was excited to try. To be honest, I'm not sure if the flavor really differs from a regular red curry but I guess they did add pumpkin in there for an extra oomph. Regardless, the flavors were still delicious especially with rice. Wouldn't recommend getting it with vegetables as the protein option as there were already vegetables in the curry. The serving size was quite large and we brought a lot of it back home. Very solid Thai place in SF that I would definitely come back for. Recommend ordering a few bowls of rice to balance it out. PAD SEE EW (chicken): Their sauce is more umami than sweet, but goes well with the chicken. Could use more veggies, but otherwise delicious. TOM KHA: This is the best tom kha I've had in the bay. Creamy, aromatic, while light and refreshing from the citrus. SO GOOD. This place definitely had an authentic feel to it which is hard to come by in the marina sometimes. The curries were of perfect spice and consistency, really liked the gyoza and chicken wing appetizers too. That eggplant fish and pad Thai was also standout. I really liked the sauce that came with it, though it had to be used lightly since it was super salty. The actual rice was good, but I did get tired of the saltiness/fishiness towards the end. I wished the egg was a little bit more runny, as it was cooked all the way through and was almost a bit rubbery because of this.
