It was this or Blackwood, and I'm glad we went with this since we ended up saving a good chunk of money. The Baan Yaai Pad Thai is worth the $20+; hefty amounts of shrimp + crab meat, as well as egg and tofu! I liked that they had dry pepper flakes and sambal chili, if requested, on the side so we can adjust the spice level accordingly. Shrimp had a good bouncy texture though the crab less so, but still good. We originally ordered the Baan Yaai Crab Omurice but unfortunately it ran out by 1:30PM on a Monday. Hopefully next time! The Massaman curry was interesting - I've not seen this item before. My friends, both Filipino, said that it reminded them of a dish back home, while it reminded me a little of Vietnamese Bò Kho (Beef Stew) in consistency as well as foundational ingredients, although mild in spice and with more cinnamon(?) undertones. Served as a lunch special ($15), it came with veggie eggrolls (that were surprisingly doughy inside) and a small portion rice. Overall an average meal, though I probably wouldn't get it again. Thai Tea is also complimentary at check-in, though only one per table. Per waitress, if you write a review and post pics, each submitting person will get a free one too. Yummy, and not overly sweet, though maybe made a bit differently between batches as ours varied in color and taste despite being fully mixed. 4 stars because despite everything being pretty good, the noodles were on the wetter side (even for my friend's Pad See Ew) which made it a bit difficult to finish every bite. Baan Yaai was not exactly all it was hyped up to be, but it got the job done. My guess is that many of the reviews are by people who ate here when they were drunk... As a self-proclaimed certified foodie, I would say it was OKAY. All the sweet dishes (including the Thai iced tea) were way too sweet. The fish was pretty good, but again, too sweet. The impossible fried rice was pretty good and I actually took my leftovers. I wouldn't come here again (at least not while sober). HOWEVER, the waitress is super nice and accommodating. TBH, I'm a sucker for anything that promotes Thai street food. We were driving down Lombard and heading towards Corte Madera when a sign promoting Baan Yaai caught my eye. I started perusing the menu and we decided to pick up some takeout on the way home. There are some interesting items that I've never seen elsewhere, like the crab omurice or the impossible larb salad. We ordered those 2 dishes, as well as a veggie pad thai. The flavors were everything we hoped for and there's still a few dishes I want to go back to try. I love the story of the meaning behind the restaurant's name. It's written out on a chalk board inside the restaurant. Basically, the name translates to grandma's home in Thai. The dishes are meant to represent the comforting and delicious foods you may expect to find at traditional food stalls in Thailand, but also prepared with loving care (just like how Grandma would have made it!). Came here on a Thursday night and service was pretty quick. My friend and I split the pad kee mao which was very solid and reasonably priced. I thought it had the perfect amount of sauce and flavor. This is a mom-and-pop shop, relatively new Thai place in the Marina, and I heard it is a local favorite. They didn't disappoint, but wasn't too mind blowing either. Read the descriptions of all the goodies we got from Baan Yaai below. - Pad Kee Mao [GET]: I got the drunken noodles, which is the spicy wide rice noodles with chicken sautéed in chili, garlic, onion, bell pepper, carrot, tomato, and Thai basil. I don't think it was spicy at all though, but I do love the generous amount of garlic that they use! There's a decent amount of chicken, great quality and quite juicy. I like the addition of Chinese broccoli and peppers, added a crunchy texture to the flat noodles. The only downside was that it was too oily, and I can only eat half of it before it gets too heavy for me. I would suggest getting something else, if you prefer lighter entree. - Pad Thai [GET]: My boyfriend got the Bangkok style fresh thin rice noodle stir fry with pork and tofu. The pork is well-seasoned and tender. Tofu is lightly fried and coated with breading, but not greasy at all. There's a ton of pickled daikon on top, comes with eggs, bean sprouts, red and green onions, sautéed with sweet and sour tamarind sauce and lastly topped with peanut crumbs. This pad thai is on the sweeter and wetter side than most places. - Chicken Satay [GET]: There's 4 chicken skewers, grilled wonderfully with a nice shiny glaze of oil on top. The chicken is tender, juicy, and nicely seasoned. It is served with cucumber salad and peanut sauce on the side. A pretty good spot in the Marina for Thai food. I ordered the pad see ew, which is always a go-to of mine at Thai places but I thought I would mix it up and get shrimp instead of my usual pork. The shrimp and noodles were well cooked, but all in all I felt that the dish was just pretty good. Also ordered the crispy rolls, which while they satisfied my desire for a fried fix, were rather bland. All in all I don't have much to say about the food I ordered as it felt slightly above average. I did however think that the service was really good. There was one person working the wait staff who did a fantastic job! The food also came out super quick and piping hot. This restaurant is a great location in the marina and there's plenty metered parking around. The food definitely has a kick to it so if you're a spice lover, it's at a perfect level. Not my favorite but still pretty good! Came here for dinner on Friday night with a friend because we were both craving Thai! I made a reservation but probably didn't need to since there were only a couple others in the restaurant. The location is not as prime as chestnut street shops so they definitely lose the customers who randomly are passing by (since way less people walk on this street generally). We ordered the gyoza to start and then for entrees got the Pad Thai and Pad See Eew -- both with chicken! The food came out quickly and was pretty good. I have had a lot of Thai in the past so I must say that the noodles could have been better..specifically the pad Thai! They seemed mushy and there wasn't much going on! I usually like to have a mix of tofu and chicken in my dish but they seemed to only have chicken. Additionally I noticed a couple of the chicken pieces had some black or darkness to it that I did not pick up on until I was reheating the leftovers. While I didn't try any of their food menu, I thoroughly enjoyed what I had ordered. I was looking for a Thai Iced Tea and a snack that would hold me over until dinner. The Thai Iced Tea was amazing. It was sugary, condensed milk, and blended together perfectly. It was so good that I ordered a 2nd one to go. The Mango Stick Rice hit the spot. The Mango was sliced up and was cold which surprised me a little bit. However, the sticky rice was warm and when you combined the two it was amazing. The dish comes with the condensed milk in a mini pitcher that allows you to smoother the rice/mango as much or little as you want to. I was thoroughly impressed with the sticky rice and highly recommend that you try it if you are a fan of the sweet dessert. I recommend trying this place because what I ordered was delicious and it was not expensive by any means. I love Thai food. Lemme just start there. When we went, we asked for the recs from the server taking our orders. We had the Crab Pad Thai that's served in a traditional egg crepe. Next up was a Thai Crab omuraisu. Also an order of Roti and Fried chicken wings. First off, everything was completely delicious. The omuraisu was the perfect texture rivaling the best Japanese and Korean versions of scrambled eggs. They were cooked to about 70-75% and slightly runny, exactly how you'd want it. The fried rice was amazing and the giant complete CHONKS of crab meat were sooooooooo good. The pad thai was really delicious too. Not overly salted. The wings were a little tiny, but they were delicious. I wish there was simply a larger order option for these and the wings were twice the size. I just like having more meat, but that's me. The Roti Canai, I have to talk about this specifically. The thing about roti is that most malaysian and thai places can mess it up. It ends up being too dry and fried. Baan Yaai got it perfect with a crisp outside and a soft tender inside. There's somehow a taste of maple syrup inside the sauce too! I have no idea if it is because the sugars in the coconut milk somehow caramelized and made some maply flavors or what but dood, YOU HAVE TO TRY IT.
