Went to Back 40 last night for dinner and it was delicious! First - the space. Large inside but they also have multiple areas outside for seating. We sat on the back patio. The beer/liquor list is extensive. We ordered two apps for the table - fried pickles and Buffalo cauliflower, both were large portions and very good! Came out hot and the pickles were NOT soggy like I have had at some places. (No pics - we ate them too fast) I got the Lobster croissant, which was out of this world. A LOT of lobster meat, no filler, and not too much mayonnaise. The croissant was delicate and flaky, the buttery roll with the lobster was heaven. Fries were great too. My husband got the Nashville chicken sandwich and raved over that as well. He also really liked the tater tots. The other people in our party got the fish and chips and fried chicken. Both loved their dishes and the portions were huge. Very worth your money. Will definitely go back again! read more

The food is delicious! This is one of our favorite spots and we brought our out of town family because it's usually a great place, but we were here on a Monday (Labor Day) and the service was awful. We kept having to remind the waitress to bring us things we'd asked for and she still forgot most if it. The food took so long and it wasn't super busy inside (we had already called ahead to tell them our group would be larger than the average). It took an hour for meals to arrive and none of us even had an opportunity to order a second drink because our waitress was MIA. Then we were brought the incorrect bill and she went to run it and had to come back and go over the correct bill with us before running our cards. Been here twice now and had excellent experiences both times. First was date night with my husband and we shared the baked Brie plate with was awesome and also delicious, good selection of offerings. Speciality cocktails are amazing I especially liked the cinnamon apple mule. Second time was ladies night and I had the fried chicken sandwich which was the best thing ever. Ever. Both times the service was fast and friendly. This isn't a cheap restaurant, but it isn't a cheap experience either. Definitely going back, excited to try the brunch menu. Stopped in on Sunday July 22 for a bite at around 8 P.M. Sat against the northern most wall as the place had the A/C cranked, It was not a hot evening and the room was chilly. I had chowder and crab cakes. The cakes were very good. Chowder should be served hot. It was tepid. My friend had a burger and fries which she enjoyed. I'm so happy we stopped here! We passed B40 on the way somewhere else, and since it looked cool from the outside, we came back for dinner a couple days later. We got the buffalo bleu cheese calamari that was on special, and it was to die for. The meatloaf & mashed was perfectly cooked, and the chicken carbonara that was also on special was deliciously creamy (portions are generous). Heard mixed reviews but thought we would give them a try and really wanted to like it. We went Fri night and were seated outside right away. Service was great, waitress friendly. Had a white Cosmo which was good but weak. We enjoyed the crab cakes appetizer. I had Mama's Fried chicken which was cooked ok but very bland. My son had Baked mac with chicken which he also thought was bland. My husband had the corned beef Reuben and thought it was good. This was the closest restaurant to my parent's house, so we got take out after a day of helping them sort through the basement. The menu was somehow overwhelming AND unimpressive. Appears to be trying to do "too much". The four of us each had different menu items with no special requests. Food was cold after the total 5 minute drive from the restaurant, and even if it were warm, it wouldn't have been very good. None of us finished our meals, and will likely not eat or get food from here again. Might be good if you're used to Applebee's. Started here with the hubby for a quick bite on a date afternoon. I am a craft beer drinker and their selection has a good variety. I also heard the bartender offering interesting cocktail concoctions to a couple sitting at the bar. We were in the mood for snacks so the first thing we ordered was the artichoke spinach dip. Warm Naan bread to dip into that creamy goodness hit the spot and the gruyere cheese really pulls the whole dish together. I must have needed a carb fix because we also had the Warm Asiago Loaf. Forget dinner rolls at your typical restaurant, this loaf should accompany any meal and don't forget the garlic butter!! We're not typically in south county but to and from the beaches or Newport- if you're in the area, make the stop. read more

The restaurant takes call ahead seating , the information given was name & phone number , why make everyone in the party dinning walk inside only to be told to go back to your car & wait, why not have us call you when we arrive & text the customer when the table is ready. Visited on a Sunday evening Industrial country best describes the decor. They seemed rather busy and it took quite a while to get our drinks once seated. We were never offered a glass of water which I found odd. The A/C wasn't on even though it had hit 90f that day and it was quite uncomfortable until we had cold drinks in our hands. There were small gnats and flies in the restaurant..something I despise... Shooing them away while eating was quite aggravating. For our vegan diner. the only option was the cauliflower dish which was undercooked and over-seasoned with lemon. The lobster roll was over seasoned with the lemon. The fish and chips were very good. The chicken parm was mediocre (gravy had the metallic taste you only get with a can) All in all, I don't think we will be returning. We just weren't that impressed. read more

Review is for Bar Area / Beer / Appetizers. Buddy of mine invited me to Tilted Barn for Thursday after work drinks. Only problem - Tilted Barn is open Friday and Saturday only! So we drive 15 minutes (an eternity to RI drivers) to get somewhere and find that it's closed. Bummer, right? WRONG! We had a great time about 1/4 mile away at Back 40. Marissa, our waitress, was incredible with her knowledge of beer selections. I'm no beer snob, but my friend apparently is. Marissa and my buddy discussed the varying degrees of hoppiness in the Back 40 draught beer selection. Marissa was quick to offer samples and we had a couple great beers. We enjoyed some appetizers as well - the Old Bay Tater Tots (we had to order 2 of them as one just wasn't enough!) and buffalo chicken tacos. If you don't know what Old Bay is, it's a spice normally associated with crabs (Maryland style preparation), these tater tots were just the right amount of spice and partnered well with the two dipping sauces. We ate 2 of these appetizers if that's any indication of how good these are. The buffalo chicken tacos were good as well - shredded chicken, lettuce, tomato and blue cheese dressing. All in all - our night started out on a very bad foot, but we recovered very nicely at Back 40 - knowledgable and friendly staff, lively bar scene (every seat at the bar was taken), and EXCELLENT beer selection - even for the beer snob in your crew! read more

I'm rather amazed at this new restaurant. It's one where the owners mill around and are jovial. The wait staff is courteous, quite nice, and conversational when appropriate; they are also very attentive, you water glass or other drink is never empty and empty plates removed promptly. The food is rather amazing, with great portions and served promptly. This isn't from one visit it's relative to numerous visits. Anyone who came when it opened will note that during the first weeks, the menu changed. This was based on customer inputs and that philosophy of continuous improvement of the "customer experience" seems to be the core value of the owners and managers. I've eaten here three times, and I've never been happy with the money I spent. The first time was uneventful, but mediocre. The second time was just before COVID and I was meeting some colleagues for drinks. A few of us congregated in the bar table area, and someone came over and was SO rude to us because 6 of us were in that area but only 4 of us had seats. We had only been there for 5 minutes tops. I still don't understand what the problem was, but my husband and I decided to leave because the person was so rude to us. The last time we ate their food was tonight. We ordered takeout through DoorDash. It took 20 minutes longer than they originally said it would take, and our dasher had to wait for it (she texted me to let me know what was going on and was fantastic! She said this was common with B40). We live about 7 minutes away, and when the food arrived, it was ... terrible. Nothing had enough salt. I ordered the fried chicken, and it is supposed to come with corn and bacon potato salad. They gave me mashed potatoes and asparagus (neither of which had any flavor). They put the fried chicken directly on top of the mashed potatoes, so the chicken was covered in potatoes and completely mushy. It had NO flavor, so I covered everything in BBQ sauce. The first time I saw this place we were driving past it to go to another location. The building caught my eye and I told me husband WE are going THERE next time (it's on our way to Newport). Well the very next time we stopped there and this place did not disappoint! We were there for a family lunch. I dont remember exactly what we got - it was about a month ago - but I knew we had the shrimp appetizer and I want to say there was some shrimp tacos, chicken sandwich, kids Mac and cheese and a short ribs sandwich in there too. Ugh...I was excited about this restaurant, but it is going through a lot of growing pains. Pros: Friendly staff. Offered a free desert to apologize for food taking over an hour. Cons: Food, wait, and service. Took over an hour to get an appetizer of deviled eggs...and although the staff was very friendly, they seem untrained: no plates or silverware when the food did arrive and no pen to sign a credit card. We went to Back 40 because several people we knew recommended. Well it wasn't quite that great. Good, but not great. Service was horrible (busy Saturday night), but still could have been much better. The food is just ok. It is loud inside and more of a bar room type restaurant, not typical dining out imho. Plus we had a larger party and we were literally seated in the middle of the main dining room on a folding table...that was completely UNACCEPTABLE. We spoke to several people there is they did nothing about it. I have never ever been seated at a folding table at a restaurant. Sorry, but this is 3-stars at best. read more

Sorry guys but you need a lot more practice. Maybe some better trial runs would have been better. Very very basic menu and that couldn't even be executed properly. Burger with chips should have been able to be produced in your sleep before opening. Not sure if you were trying to promote a handmade burger but if you are at least train how to make a burger that looks like a burger. No the difference between medium rare and burnt. I honestly didn't have it in my heart to send back the burger because the kitchen was obviously struggling. Fish and chips. Failed also. I get the Potatoe chip idea but it's a restaurant near the water you might want to check your competitor and see that fish and chips come with French fries. If you are going to be different then you better ace the fish. Again limited menu and you couldn't execute a basic fish and chip. Went here for dinner the other day and was happy with the experience. Our waitress was nice and attentive without being too overbearing. I was a bit surprised by the layout inside. The bar area is huge and open. The seating area was smaller than I imagined but it was just myself and my wife and maybe 2-3 other tables. I thought it was odd cause judging by the number of cars in the parking lot I thought we might have to wait. We got the chilli nachos for an app and they were very good. I got the feta cheese burger and it was cooked perfectly. Exactly how I like it. The fries that came with the burger would also good. The prices were reasonable for what you go.
