I was impressed with the freshness of the food the first time I ate in the restaurant. We came back several times as a family and enjoyed our visit every time. The pandemic has forced us to order pickup so we tried BYG and found that they delivered the same quality and freshness that we came to expect before. Not only does the food taste great, the ordering and pickup has been spectacular! I am so impressed with the way these people handle the orders and tell me it will be ready in 20 minutes. I pull up and tell the person, who is usually waiting outside, my name. She comes out with my order and sure enough, it was 20 minutes exactly. No wonder it took 6 tries to get through on the phone. So much for the upside. I should have ordered extra taziki. Very small portion. IHardly any tomatoes and onions were sparse. I could have lived with this. The meat was not even warm. I've never had an issue with the service here bottom line, food just isn't that great. Burger is never seasoned, pasta (yes I even tried the pasta) tastes like old Ragu sauce with no seasoning in anything, and Gyro was very dry. But people there were nice to my wife and I. I placed an order through GrubHub and was delivered the wrong order. When I called Backyard Grill they were so rude and said it wasn't their problem. The order left at my door was a walk in order so the mistake was most certainly made by both the restaurant and the driver so the manager at BYG could have been a bit more understanding but instead insisted it "was not their problem" and had nothing to do with them. I did not have anything to feed us and now spent $50 on one tiny meal. How is this not their problem when it reflects their reputation?! I won't be trusting them ever again. The link was directly from them to the 3rd party so it is their responsibility and the least they could do was apologize and offer to have me come in and pick up a replacement meal. We order from there and pick up often... well, we used to. Shame on BYG. My delivered meal wasn't good anyway. read more

We order catering last night for 10- chicken skewers, that came with roasted potatoes, rice pilaf and upgraded Villager Salad instead of Greek Salad. Two additional people came to dinner unexpectedly and there was plenty of food! We have leftovers in fact! The chicken was well marinated and still juicy after being grilled. Fast delivery and the burgers, fries with merkts cheese and onion rings were cooked perfectly. Frankly I didn't have high expectations because of some bad experiences at other local places, but I was pleasantly surprised at the high quality and tastiness of the food. I'd been a regular (and always recognized) customer....always put a few bucks in the tip jar, always left a buck or two for the cleanup crew.... When I had to call in an order to replace one which I'd had delivered (for about 8 dollars after delivery fee and tip), because they loaded the burgers for my kids when we didn't want anything on them (and hadn't been asked), I was charged full price for replacements. While I didn't request a free replacement (usually not my style), it should've been more than clear enough that I was unhappy with the preparation of my previous order. Pretty bad business practice to not satisfy a regular customer over $20. I won't be back. There's plenty of other options. Besides, the fries aren't especially good. read more

Great little fast-casual in downtown HP. The skirt steak sandwich was quite good. Plus big orders of pasta, burgers, dogs, fries, salads, stuff for the kids. That magic Coke machine that everyone loves. Chances are you've been in a restaurant like this, The Patio, comes to mind. I like the clean, well-lit space. First time there today. Food was average at best for my crew. Fries were disappointing. Drink choices? FountIn drinks from a crazy annoying machine. This is what I observed while waiting: 3 workers at cash register gabbing not paying attention to the incoming customers. Trash can and places for dirty plates completely piled up so that customers had to look elsewhere to put plates and trash. Workers on their cell phones. While a friend was having surgery at Highland Park Hospital we decided to look for a place to get a bite to eat while waiting. We looked at Yelp for suggestions and decided to go to the Backyard Grill . What a great place! We all ordered gyro plates and were very pleased. The amount of food was very generous and delicious. The gyro meat was some of the best I have ever had, and the rice and potatoes were perfectly seasoned. Service was quick and friendly. Have been to BYG several times before Covid but hadn't had takeout until today. It was fabulous! They packaged each individual order so that my book club, as we sat separately on my patio, felt safe. And the food was delicious and everyone was happy. I ordered my old usual BYG salad with chicken gyros (there were 3 of these). Others ordered 2 Caprese wraps, an Asian salad, one roasted veggie wrap and a gyos platter. We were all happy with our orders and there was plenty to eat. Mine was enough for lunch tomorrow. What a pleasant surprise. Searching for good gyros nearby, I found BYG on Yelp. We checked this place out for dinner on Friday night. Menu is huge - whatever you're in the mood for (as long as it's at least slightly unhealthy), they've got it! We both had the gyros platter. It comes with either fries or rice and potatoes. We got the fries The serving was huge - definitely 2 meals worth of meat. And the prices were decent, especially for Highland Park. The burgers are great as well - it's become my go-to for a better-than-fast-food burger on the North Shore. I wasn't totally bowled over by the salad I got one time, but really, who's ordering a salad with the rest of the amazing food on the menu! Quick tip: If you're getting carryout, go in and order (or call it in) - do not use GrubHub. Last time, they got our order wrong and told us a much longer time than it actually took, so our food was pretty cold by the time we picked it up. The employees couldn't figure out why we took so long to get there - when we told them GrubHub told us much later, they recommended against it. Also, the menu is slightly different and some of the prices are higher if you use GrubHub. So just don't. read more

Firstly, I'm happy to see a joint give Michael's in HP a run for their money. The folks at Michael's are rude and inconsiderate, so I won't give them my money. So I was intrigued by BYG. I don't normally eat this kind of food, as I try to stay with healthy eating. But I saw that their menu said "homemade Gyros". Homemade??? I just had to try one. Now, I grew up in a city with a lot of Greeks, and there was a Greek church around the corner from my house. Gyro joints were everywhere when I was growing up; and I'm Armenian, and I speak Greek. So, I'm not a gyro snob, but an aficionado. I KNOW a good gyro. Most gyros, even the "good" ones, come from one of two restaurant suppliers, and they're pre-formed, on a vertical spit, and pretty much they all taste the same - they're good, but the meat is the same everywhere. What varies is the sauce and the amount of meat they put on. A good gyro has been missing from Highland Parks' diverse, yet bland and predictable repertoire of eateries. So, diet be damned, I wanted to try a homemade gyro. It was a Saturday around 5:30 pm, and I ventured the couple of miles to BYG. They had a sign up saying that they were closing early for a party that had reserved the place. Duly noted. The place is clean and spacious, and they have a fountain for their drinks. It's a great place to bring the young ones for a quick meal, take out, or dine-in. I ordered three sandwiches to go. I know that if I eat a good gyro, I want to do it in private where I can strap on the feed bag and hose down afterwards. So I ordered an Italian Combo, a Pork Souvlaki on a pita, and a gyro - to go. No fries, no drinks, and the order came to $23. I rushed home to enjoy the sinful gyro I had ordered. Sadly, when I got home, I discovered that there was no gyro - there was some kind of chicken in a pita (most likely, a "chicken gyro", which isn't a gyro, btw). I was SO disappointed, and not about to run back out and point out their mistake - too much of a pain for fast food. So I called the place, and happened to speak with the guy who actually took my order. I don't know why I called, I shouldn't be eating this anyway, but, hey, they should know, and let's see what happens. The guy was very apologetic and offered to remedy it if I wanted to drive back over. I didn't. He offered to give me a credit for a free sandwich on my next visit. I was appreciative of his efforts, but I told him that it wasn't likely I'd be back - not because of the incident as much as I don't eat this sort of thing often enough to make it worth his while. I'm not really a customer worth keeping, because, well, I don't eat this stuff normally. He kept on, politely, and even offered a $10 visa credit card to make up for the mistake. Okay, he tried really hard, really wanted to do right by the customer; I couldn't be obstinate. I accepted his offer of a free sandwich, he took my name for the next time. I decided today to eat that gyro for lunch. The guy wasn't there, but when I told the cashier that he had offered me a sandwich to make up for a mishap, I was not questioned in the least. She rang it up and I was off with my gyro. This was a GOOD gyro! None of the post-consumption salties that one sometimes get from eating food with too much salt. The meat was piled high, nice onion and tomato on a modest pita - as a gyro should be. Their tzatziki was homemade and authentic. It was quite nice. Reminds me of the line in Pulp Fiction about the "tasty burger". And I'll tell you, it WAS different than the typical gyro meat. It was seasoned nicely. Bottom line? Great service in the face of a mishap, and they make fresh, meaty sandwiches. My friend loved their Italian combo and the pork souvlaki. Oh, and I DID eat the chicken sandwich. It was pretty good, even if it was masquerading as a gyro. When I get the urge, I'll go back. Hat's off to that dude, whatever his name was. read more

Pro: convenient location, large portions and reasonably priced. Cons: I live in Highland Park and was excited when BYG opened. I've now tried the food 6 different times and continue to be disappointed. The entry is disheveled and used as a office, bad first impression. They spent a lot on LCD menu boards but there are no descriptions of the items. The soup of the day which has always been egg lemon is more like flavorless paste. Food is very mediocre. Just ordered Greek chicken it was bland and just average, the decent rice was topped with cold Greek potatoes and half raw undercooked oily veggies. The food is always just thrown together. Nobody seems to care about quality, just get the food out. I'm shocked people actually eat here and can't believe they will continue to stay open with the poor quality of food and bad service they provide. As stale Michaels is, they provide a much better product. BYG Is so close to being really good but there is no attention to detail, quality or customer service. read more

Great selection of burger , salads etc. but it was not what I expected , spacious place with many tables but the service I found it such a "cold" receiving without any positive energy among employees. I chose the burger with blue chesse and bacon and it was like any regular burger anywhere nothing great also price was little expensive . back to the place? We were celebrating an important birthday and ordered a lot of food for our entire family. Obviously the order had to be take-out. In order to make sure the orders were going to be kept separate, by family members, for safety reasons, we personally visited the restaurant, the day prior to our celebration, with an itemized list for each family group. The next day the orders were ready, on time, perfectly done food, organized exactly the way we requested, and to a meal, they were perfectly prepared. This is a diamond in the rough, and should be high on your list of places to try. The staff is friendly and efficient, and there is ample room for separation, even when this pandemic is over and they'll be open for in store dining. The menu has everything...literally.
