4.5 stars if I could. My friend and I actually stopped by En Sushi for happy hour and ordered 4 dishes, and quite frankly, we weren't full there. The portions were much smaller than we thought so we walked a few steps and came here! BAD Sushi is a different vibe. It feels more casual and homey. And the sushi portions are much more aligned with what I thought they should be! Bigger sizes than En Sushi, that's for sure. However, it didn't seem like they had Happy Hour promos. We got the Cute Devil Roll and the Butter Delight! I liked the cute devil roll! And the butter delight was savory and garlicky, not in a bad way but unique. First off, dock them 1 star for not listing prices online. That said, they have good, filling lunch and dinner combos. You choose one from list A and B plus miso soup (with scallions and tofu bits), salad with creamy dressing (nice mix of greens with Romaine lettuce), 2 shumai and white rice. I chose salmon & cucumber roll with teriyaki salmon. Salmon was over grilled but a large portion. That dinner combo, plus 2 salmon sushi orders and a BCSR (dynamite roll) was $32 takeout. The one time I ate in for lunch I remember service being slow though there weren't many other customers. Sooo many choices. more rolls combos it'll make your head spin and plenty of soy paper rolls. For the carb-conscious look for rice-free options. Want to try spicy tuna on crispy rice. They are not my first choice for sushi but I'd definitely get more when there's too much traffic to other sushi places. There's metered parking and a few parking spots in the back. read more

If you are looking for an affordable sushi restaurant on the west side, I would recommend BAD sushi. Their crispy rice with spicy tuna is a well done version of this popular dish. I also like their 911 roll. My only complaint is their sushi rolls tend to have a lot of sweet sauce so I prefer to ask for that on the side when ordering. If you have a big to-go order, they usually throw in a free miso soup too. :) read more

Best and delicious is what the BAD acronym stands for I believe? I will agree with that. A hole in the wall that gets so packed after 6pm that you will have to wait for some time to get a table so try to come early. As a matter of fact, before 5 p.m. the only person at the restaurant is a lonely employee who is secretly trying to grab a nap behind a corner table, while being covered by a piece of plywood. Bizarre but I'm not going to let it ruin my experience. The restaurant is small but the food is delicious and all waitresses are extremely nice. Just like with most sushi restaurants, as a customer you'll have an option to sit at the bar, talk to the chefs or you can grab one of a few tables. Because the restaurant is so small you'll have no problem getting attention of your waitress at any point. I found it very convenient. I don't have any particular dishes to recommend, except for their albacore rolls, that were exceptionally good. Everything I tried at BAD was finger lickin good. read more

After trying the sushi of sawtelle and general West side, i can say the above confidently. If you haven't tried this place yet, make sure you come and take care of staff. The most underwhelming and tasteless sushi I've ever had. I ordered the spicy tuna crunch and the albacore lover roll. If I didn't drown each bite in sauce, it was really bland. Even the sauce wasn't great, both sauces had a little spiciness and tasted salty but didn't have any real flavor. It's weird and makes me question the quality of the sushi. I got the Chirashi bowl at this place. The chirashi had a lot of salami slices and they were thick too! I really loved the tamago and carrot additions in the bowl as well. A lot of times, the bowl has too much rice but it had the perfect amount and I finished everything and did not feel bloated, but very satiated. Don't let the name fool you! BAD sushi isn't bad... it's best and delicious! (Actually, it's probably not the best sushi, but it's certainly delicious and inventive.) I wasn't sure what to expect from a restaurant that marketed itself as BAD, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality/presentation of food, nice ambiance, friendly service. The restaurant has a happy hour special from 4:30-7PM, and I would highly recommend ordering from that menu since most items are $1-3 off their regular price! The extensive regular menu had an array of traditional sushi (sashimi, nigiri, etc.), new creations (tuna tower, tuna on earth,etc.) and standard Japanese fare (teriyaki, tempura, etc.). Here is what we ordered: AMAZON ROLL This was so refreshing and light! The roll still seemed substantive even though there was no rice to fill you up. The cucumbers were lightly bathed in vinegar, which gave the cucumber a slightly sweet, pickled flavor. And, the tuna was fresh and meaty. The small piece of avocado in the middle of each piece was a welcome addition! Presentation was beautiful and I could totally envision this as being part of a tropical, Amazonian landscape. TUNA ON EARTH This was hands down the best dish I had at BAD Sushi! Although you only receive two pieces, each piece is loaded with spicy tuna. What differentiates the spicy tuna here from other restaurants is the smooth texture and the extra amount of spice! I've never had spicy tuna that was this spicy! The light crunch of the tempura eggplant added the perfect amount of fried. VEGETABLE TEMPURA This tempura was surprisingly filling in spite of there being only a few pieces. The vegetables included were sweet potato / yam, green bean, broccoli, onion, and squash. The batter was heavier than some places, but still more crispy and flavorful than soggy and bland. DRAGON ROLL This was fairly standard, but still satisfying. The roll consisted of eel and avocado on top of a conventional California roll. The roll was covered in a sweet sauce that you'd typically find with barbecued eel. AGEDASHI TOFU It's lightly fried tofu. It's covered in bonito flakes. And, it's swimming in a sweet soy sauce. The tofu itself didn't have much flavor, but I could appreciate the mixture of textures. Because the restaurant is located off of Santa Monica Blvd, I would recommend parking on one of the residential cross-streets where parking is free. There are metered spaces in front of the restaurant, but these are difficult to snag since several other restaurants are adjacent to BAD Sushi. Given it's proximity to Sawtelle Japantown and the multitude of Japanese restaurants there, it's difficult to justify why BAD Sushi merits a visit. Does it really do anything different than other restaurants in the area? Probably not; I wouldn't say that the restaurant has the freshest tasting fish with the smoothest texture in the world. BUT, I would argue that the uniqueness of their menu and their great happy hour specials are probably their primary distinguishing features. I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience at BAD Sushi, and would definitely like to come back and try more items on their menu! read more
