Highly recommend, great brunch spot in the heart of Tucson! Lots of parking nearby so that isn't an issue. Went on a Friday, around 10:30a and got seated less than 10 mins later! Service was prompt and very welcoming! I got the Wyatt Earp which was 10/10, and my fiancé got the avocado toast which was good but a bit heavy on the pepper! Overall great food and service and a cute little place with indoor and outdoor seating. read more

Wow, wow, wow! Every dish was so delicious! The Brisket Caramelo is my favorite. It is a huge portion, so consider splitting it unless you brought your lumberjack hunger. Let's talk about the pancakes here. I don't usually care for pancakes, but my wife ordered the Pineapple Express. I tried a bite and oh my gosh, I am a pancake man! The best pancake I have ever had. I ended up eating half of it. Pro tip: Split a savory Benedict dish and sweet Pancake dish with someone. They compliment each other nicely. read more

I have heard for over a year that I need to try this place and it definitely lived up to the hype. As an avid, breakfast/brunch admirer I was eager to try something new. First of all, the portions are huge! Your biggest problem at this place is deciding between all the amazing Benedict they offer and a delicious, massive pancake. Delicious! Patio area is perfect for fall weather Great for large parties. Pet friendly. Great service. I had pineapple express combo, and this is definitely a sweet breakfast. Excellent breakfast. My husband had the cinnamon roll French toast and it was amazing. It came with eggs, excellent hash browns and bacon. I had the omelette with a plethora of ingredients that came with hash browns and toast. My mimosa was great! Coming back next time we are in Tucson! read more

We went to the Broadway location Thanksgiving week, not once, but twice because it is just superb! I (I'm from DE)actually got the small Snickerdoodle pancake both times-what a creation!! My daughter got the cinnamon roll French toast first time & leige waffles second time, my other daughter went once & got the Monsoon Benedict. I can't say enough how we enjoyed the food-great people as well, compliments to the chef!! Lots of creations! read more

Some good, some not so good. Very popular place. Parking is horrendous because they are located in a busy shopping center. I went there on a Tuesday morning and the inside was packed and really loud and noisy (if you want to have an intimate conversation forget it), so I requested an outdoor seat. Outside flies were constantly bothering me although this place does have spinner things (by request) to put on the table to help ward them off, and that actually did a pretty good job. The patio is a fenced-in area right next to the parking lot so pretty lousy ambience if that's what you're looking for. They brought me coffee in a dirty mug, so I requested a new one (note to the cafe, tell you're busing crew to clean the outside of the mugs as well as the inside). They goofed up my order and had to redo it, although It was super busy and maybe my server got a bit distracted. She did a good job and was very quick in taking care of the order problem and coffee refills. I will say the food was terrific, and explains why it's so popular. A nice touch was they included salsa and pico de gallo at no extra charge, something I wish other cafes would do. In particular I really like how thick they do the hash browns, another thing I wish other cafes were doing. Overall not a five star experience, but I think four stars is fair. read more

This is the place for amazing pancakes! We sat at the counter and had great service - really lucky to hit it when there wasn't a wait, like there usually is. Coffee was constantly full, food came quickly and it was all delicious. By the time we left, there were at least 8 groups waiting to be seated. I think I'd like the hash browns a little more well done, but that's just my preference. I could try every pancake they have on the menu and not be disappointed. I'd say I highly recommend, but I think everyone already knows how good this place is. I would not be sad if they opened more locations! read more

The atmosphere is a chill vibe with some outdoor and bar seating. Best hashbrowns ever! The avocado toast was a substantial portion and likely could feed 2 persons. The breakfast tacos were tasty and the green sauce gave it just the right lift. The only negative was canned sodas and a charge to get a "refill" on it. Service was great. read more

One of the greatest breakfast experiences in Tucson. The combination of flavors will have you coming back for more. They have some of the best pancakes in Tucson, but they really shine with their breakfast Benedict, which deliver a hearty breakfast packed full of flavor. Amazing!!! This is hands down the best place I have ever had breakfast at. Run. Do. Not. Walk. This time I had the basic eggs, bacon, hash brown and pancake dish. I don't know what they do to the hash browns but they are literally the best I have ever had. Pancakes, French toast, ALL of it is delish!!! Service is always great. The reviews don't lie - this place is so good for breakfast/brunch. Just don't try to go during primetime on the weekend! The pancakes are next level. I had the snickerdoodle pancake and was in utter bliss. I also had a benedict that was like nothing I've ever had for breakfast before - with a perfectly poached egg as the metaphorical cherry on top. The restaurant is loud, smells of bacon grease, and resembles more of a classic diner than anything fancy, but the food speaks volumes. Service was great and I loved my meal. Normally the smell of bacon grease gets to me, but the food was so good it didn't detract from my meal. They serve breakfast/brunch every day so probably the best time to go here is on a weekday morning would be my guess! read more

Absolutely one of the best brunch places I've ever been to. On a trip over the weekend to Tucson we lucked out and actually ate at the best place we could have! Late brunch on a Sunday in Tucson: the food was a 10 out of 10. The service was 10 out of 10! The positive energy and excellence experience was amazing. I love this place, it's one of my favorites for breakfast but they have updated their menu and I'm not a huge fan of all the changes. I'll post the few changes I noticed. Their soda selections have changed. They now offer coca-cola products, still in a can. The waffle and I believe they had French toast that came with fresh berries.....that's no more. The portion sizes have reduced substantially! This snickerdoodle pancake use to not only be thicker and fluffier but also fill an entire plate. My husband ordered French toast which was much smaller a portion than I remember with what seemed to be smaller bread pieces but maybe I'm crazy. The prices seem about the same, maybe a little higher but I didn't compare to the old menu. The food still tastes good but it's disappointing knowing what it use to be. The service was a bit lacking the day we went in, May 1st. I'm not sure if it was the first day with their new menu or not. When our server greeted us to take our drink order we told her we were ready to place our food order and she told us their was another table in front of us and the kitchen was backed up but she would be back. We waited a while before we were able to put our order in. Then there was a good wait before our food came out. We were there at about 10:30 on a Monday. read more

We went here for breakfast twice during our Tucson stay. Our initial visit was because they advertised gluten free options and one of our party is a celiac. I am an eggs Benedict nut, so it is my go to order. So glad I did! This was my absolute favorite Benedict! The Hollandaise had just a smidge of spice to it. It was creamy and delicious! The hash browns were well cooked and not mushy. If you like spicy, my friend enjoyed the Coyote Benedict and also sang its praises. Both days we had attentive and knowledgeable waitstaff (a must when ordering for someone with food issues). We had our food quickly. The coffee cups and water glasses were never empty. Prices were reasonable. Everyone in our group of four agreed that their breakfast was awesome and it was not even a debate where to come on our last day! read more

I've been to Baja a few times now and it never disappoints! My favorite has to be their huge pancakes, which have fun and unique flavors and are very filling! I usually opt for outdoor seating, which they usually offer all day, so I can bring my pup with me. Service is always quick and staff are always nice, and will bring out water for my pup without me even having to ask! Just a cool space to meet with friends and grab a bite to eat! read more

We came here for brunch on Sunday. There was a 20-30 definitely a popular breakfast place in the area. Come hungry the portions are big! I saw a lot of people ordering their specialty pancakes for the table and they looked amazing! We each ordered a Benedict and they came with hash browns which were crispy are delicious. I ordered the monsoon and the herbed hollandaise made this extra delicious but that thick cut bacon with the runny yolk on it mixed with hollandaise yum! My husband ordered the wolverine and said it was amazing. I finished 3/4 of mine and I was definitely full. I also want to point out that the service was on point. Our server checked back regularly was friendly offered recommendations and accommodated any requests. We will for sure be here for brunch often especially since we live down the street. read more

Another stellar place in Tucson. The crowd is mostly families. It has a diner feel to it. Over the years the biscuits and gravy has changed unfortunately which I used to LOVE. But they started being stingy with the amount of sausage in the gravy and it just didn't taste the same. The pancakes and Benedict's are amazing. It's pricey but you do get your money's worth. I've tried a few different Benedict's and they're all so yummy. You really can't go wrong. One thing that is annoying is they charge extra for every little thing. For example I asked for extra when ordering a Benedict and they brought a whole bowl of it instead a sauce cup and charged me $3 for it. And the worst part is it really did feel like it NEEDED the extra sauce. This really deterred me from coming back for a while since the Benedict's start around $17. Overall it's very very solid and you do get your money's worth (if you don't ask for extra sauce). read more

Baja Cafe is delicious and has so many wonderful sweet and savory options on the menu. My sole complaint is that there's almost too many good items to choose from. I had the classic huevos rancheros during my last visit and they were perfect. Our server was so friendly and despite a crowded restaurant, our food came out fast. First time diner here. Visiting from out of town. Asked my server, Gordie, what the very best thing on the menu was. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and let me know about how the food was original recipes, crafted in house, down to the hot sauces and seasonings. He suggested several dishes but said the Alcatraz was his favorite. That's what I ordered and it did NOT disappoint! The food was fresh and came out quickly. Arrived at 1:10pm in hopes of a thinner crowd but still 3/4 full! We were seated immediately with waters not long after. Diet Coke came by way of can and a tall glass of ice. We ordered the fish tacos and the brisket machaca tacos. Options included corn/flour tortillas (corn of course) and whether the tilapia should be breaded or grilled (grilled)! Food arrived about 10 min later and included small sides of salsa and puréed black beans with chips (see pic). Sides were terrific but the tacos stole the show. While a somewhat pricey $17-18/plate of three, they were absolutely loaded with their respective proteins, along with a variety of condiments - such as diced tomatoes, chilies, and pickled onions. Conversation took as to 2:30 - well past their 2p closing but we (and half-dozen other tables) were never rushed. Hands down I'll be back! read more

We've been to this location a few times and when I say we are never disappointed, I mean NEVER. The food is so good here and the portions are H-U-G-E (we brought a ton of food home)...you definitely get what you pay for here! I wish I had remembered our waitresses name because she was super attentive to our table even though we were there during the Saturday morning rush. She had such a great attitude despite it being really busy and she was just so kind to all of us. The music is a bit loud, so if you like a nice calm and quiet atmosphere for breakfast this may not be your spot but when you are in the mood for a lively environment, you have to check this place out. I only managed to get a few pictures but all of the dishes looked & tasted amazing. We had a great mix of savory and sweet dishes at our table. There was the King Kong, the Train Wreck and Avocado toast, all of which were said to be absolutely delicious, the chocolate chip, cinnamon roll and two pan Sam lemon blueberry pancakes, which definitely satisfied the sweet tooth. I can only speak to the cinnamon roll and lemon blueberry pancakes and they are super delicious, the tart lemon curd is beautifully paired with the sweet blueberry pancake and the cinnamon roll is exactly how it sounds with the perfect amount of cinnamon and a sweet drizzle of frosting, absolutely scrumptious. My suggestion is to share your dishes if you don't like leftovers but pancakes make for a great late night treat, if you ask me! read more

Coming from SD, this is THE BEST egg benedict I've ever had. I got the Wolverine benedict and the flavor profile was out of this world. The bacon, avocado sauce, poached eggs, and everything else on there worked seamlessly together. Quality made me speechless. Additionally, the food portion was huge! I am a big hash brown person so I'm very particular with them. Baja Cafe's hash brown was so crispy and soft all at the same time. Service was spectacular for us. Baja Cafe specializes in putting a smile on our guests' faces with fresh, delicious American and Southwestern food and superb customer service in an upbeat atmosphere. We currently are open from 6 am - 2 pm daily. Here at our second location you will find a welcoming and friendly staff who are ready to serve up some amazing and unique dishes. We do offer traditional style breakfast/brunch/lunch, but also love to share our twist on some classics and dishes with a flavorful Southwestern flair. Our kitchen is a scratch kitchen. Our sauces are all made in house, some with fresh chiles we get when we drive to a local farmer in Hatch, NM. We process our meats in house, bake fresh cinnamon rolls for our french toast daily and whip up some fun and fluffy homemade pancakes as well! These yummy food choices pair nicely w/ a hot cup of coffee or our iced coffee; espresso and lattes; variety of mimosas; Bloody Mary's; beer from local Button Brew House; and margaritas! We do our best to make sure everyone feels welcome including your pups for our pet friendly patio!! For those of us who live in Tucson, as well as those who visit, we are lucky to have so many amazing and talented chefs running their local businesses. So when you choose Baja Cafe, we truly want you to enjoy both your meal and your service and thank you for coming in!!

History

Established in 2014.

Baja Cafe began on Tucson's east side in a hidden area although since opening some have said we are a hidden gem which we hope to be! We set out to offer a casual, comfortable, and friendly environment for anyone who enjoys food to come in and have a wonderful meal. We know people have choices and are honored when they choose Baja and strive to ensure the experience is a positive one. Our start was slow! But we have grown organically via word of mouth from our most amazing guests! We are excited to now be on Campbell and able to serve this area of our community.

Meet the Business Owner: Kim S.

I came into the restaurant business via my super partner Gerard (our chef and culinary madman extraordinaire). My former career was in social work and I needed a change. The restaurant biz is harder than I ever thought but so worth it when we have guests who truly enjoy our food and service and feel it has been a positive addition to their day. It also is fulfilling to work with such an amazing team and just getting to meet so many people in the community. It is the best feeling when I can look out into the dining area and see such a variety of different people. In this sometimes crazy world we are living in, we want those who come into Baja to feel welcome; to enjoy their time w/ positive service and a really great meal. The service was commendable truly some of the sweetest and most attentive service we've experienced in a long time. We started with freshly made chips and salsa, which were an instant hit. For drinks, we ordered the El Tamarindo, Mangopeno, and Monica's Cafetini. For food, we chose the Vegan Jackfruit Taquitos Trio and the Fresh Corn Tamale Platter, which came with a side of squash. The drinks were excellent, with the Mangopeno being my favorite. But the real star of the meal was the tamale platter. Oh my goodness it was absolutely delicious! Everyone at the table kept digging in and couldn't get enough. Even the squash side was so flavorful that we ordered an extra serving. The vegan jackfruit taquitos were a bit too deep-fried for our liking and didn't quite compare to the incredible tamales. To finish, we shared a caramel flan, which was the perfect sweet ending to the meal. The pricing was very reasonable, the service was exceptional, and the food was memorable. Disappointing Experience at Baja Café - Won't Be Back I walked into Baja Café excited for what I thought would be a solid breakfast spot, but the disappointment started immediately. The entire place smelled like a musty wet towel which is what they were using to wipe down the tabletops. Not exactly the most appetizing welcome. The service was painfully slow from start to finish. The waitress was new and clearly trying her best -- she was genuinely friendly and kind, so I can't fault her personally -- but the overall pacing was terrible. I ordered the eggs, hash browns, and cinnamon roll pancake combo. The hash browns were an absolute SALT BOMB! I'm not exaggerating -- they were so salty I could barely choke down two bites before pushing them away. They were nice enough to remake them, but by the time the new ones finally came out (after a long wait), I had already lost my appetite and just wanted to leave. The cinnamon roll pancakes were the opposite problem -- WAY TOO SWEET. They were drenched in cinnamon syrup and then finished with a thick white glaze on top. There was so much sugar that you could hardly tell there was an actual pancake underneath. It completely defeated the purpose of ordering a cinnamon roll "pancake." Even my latte was weird -- it came out in a disposable to-go plastic cup with a lid, even though i weas clearly dining in. It made no sense! Long story short, I went in expecting a 5-star meal and left completely let down in every single aspect: the smell, the pacing, the food execution, and the little details. Had to stop and ask young male manager to refill drinks and he obliged but is super sarcastic so it rubbed us a little the wrong way. From the bar you can see clear into the kitchen watching the cooks prep the plates. Only major complaint is the people that serve your food are also the bussers who touched used dishes and plates and scraped the food then went and served new food without washing hands. (And yes, they touch the garnish with their bare hands and put food on your plate) I think the food was delicious but I wouldn't be surprised to see a health code violation in their future the way way things were set up. Personally I am always a little leery of getting chorizo at restaurants since most places serve a mild version but Franks did NOT disappoint. The chorizo is spicy and perfect. Service is fast and friendly and the staff make you truly feel welcome. They were busy but never made any of us feel like an inconvenience. Great place!

One drawback at the location is the limited parking. For some reason there is a lot of restricted parking so can't get that close to the restaurant. Interesting atmosphere with flamingos galore and other things decorating the inside. Gives it somewhat of a party and fun feel. Food comes out in a timely manner even when they are very busy. Prices are reasonable. Give it a try, I think you'll like it. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. The cinnamon rolls were amazing! The orange zest garnish instantly took me back to being a kid and loving those orange cinnamon rolls from the can, except these were next level and beautifully presented. The ooey gooey frosting topping was generously applies and so yummy! I also ordered the French Toast Flight and it was awesomely delish! I chose the New Yorker, the Nutella Overload, and the Banana Foster. The cheesecake on the New Yorker was chef's kiss. The Nutella Overload had the best granola garnish that added such a great texture. The Banana Foster with the maple rum butter spread and caramel drizzle was top tier. Everything came out on a really cool board that made it perfect for sharing so everyone at the table could try a little of each. I was especially impressed with the quality of the fruit. The strawberries were plump, juicy, and sweet, and the bananas were perfectly ripe and not mushy at all. The kitchen timing was a bit off, the rest of the table got their food but my board didn't come out until well after, so that could be improved on. Also a quick side note that I tried the biscuits off of a friends dish and they were really good. It was interesting because they're actually grilled or toasted on the grill and it made for a really tasty crunch. I was a little skeptical at first because of the size, but don't let that fool you and try them because they were tasty. The gravy was also pretty good not my absolute favorite, but it did the trick and the biscuits really made it shine. The interior has a cool vibe. The food really is good. The exterior is a bit funky, peeling paint and faded signage and could use a bit of work. Service was so-so, our server was trying to be one of those funny/snarky personalities except it caused him to miss a lot of what we were saying...so lots of repeating and having to ask twice for things. He had accidentally entered and served an incorrect dish on one of the tickets at our table, and said he would remove it, but it was still on the bill when it came out. I appreciate personalities, but just a focus on the basics of service would have honestly made it a better experience. Overall, a decent experience with great food and just a couple issues. I would definitely go back, and next time I'm hoping to finally try that donut flight :)

We felt rushed while eating, constantly being asked if we needed anything, yet when we actually needed a refill, it took about 15 minutes. The servers' attitude was not welcoming or attentive. On top of that, they charge an extra processing fee just for paying, which felt unreasonable given the poor experience. The food also took a long time to come out. Overall, this place did not meet expectations at all. I would not return.
