The best yet. I've lived here for a very long time. Raised in San Diego area. My taste is very particular. My fish tacos came with all the yummies already on the taco. Salsa, crema, cabbage, guacamole, etc. The fish was very flavorful. It also came with a bit of chips and guacamole. The price is about the norm for Kauai. I've looked high and low for excellent tacos on the fly from North shore to South side. I will be coming back to Chalupas. My next stop will be Waimea..heard about a taco place over there. read more

While visiting Koloa town, I stopped at Chalupa's and had some very tasty chicken tacos. The plate consisted of 2 tacos, each one made from a 6 inch flour tortilla, and some tortilla chips. I went back again a few days later, and ordered the same chicken tacos, because I had thought they were pretty tasty. However, the owner/cook, Miguel, made 1 taco, and actually cut it in half, and put the 2 half-tacos on my plate and charged me full price! I'd rather drive in to Lihue or Wailua for mexican food, than to be charged full price and only receive half the amount of food! I think Miguel would be more interested in building a steady, regular crowd of repeat customers, than to just make a bigger profit in the short run by serving only half of what the menu states! read more

Shared a fish tacos plate with my man after zip lining and it was ready fast and was fresh, delicious and so hit the spot! We had a choice of with chips n salsa or rice n beans-- chips weren't house made a we only got maybe 10 chips but we were just lookin for a snack so that was fine with us. More substantial seekers should get with rice and beans. The guy in the truck Makes his salsas fresh and you can tell! We asked for a really spicy salsa and he did not disappoint! My wife and I live on Kauai and eat here about once a week. Reading some of the reviews I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations when eating out on Kauai. I usually get the carne asada burrito and it's about $9. In Santa Barbara you would probably be paying $5.50 to $6 for the same thing. However, as someone who lives on Kauai, I know that it is one of the more expensive places to live in the U.S. So don't expect to be finding any great deals besides plate lunch places. If you want to get your Mexican fix for a reasonable price, I think you can't go wrong here. There are a couple other Mexican food places that are pretty good on Kauai, but this is definitely the spot for the south shore. read more

I think living in los angeles spoils one on great mexican food and cheap pricing. Another review for chalupa's said "expect to pay twice what you would for a taco truck in san fran". In the same vein, i'd say expect to pay 3+ times what you would for the same amount of food in L.A. 2 fish tacos for 10 bucks....... With a side of chips that were obviously from a tostitos bag. 3 bucks for salsa and chips... Salsa was a shot-glass sized thimble-ful, refills, 75¢. The carnitas plate was good, but salty, and not a very large portion. Finally, when you recieve your food, it's slid underneath a plastic screen window... Which (atleast in our case) ended up touching the top of our food... which was pretty nasty. Dude is running a lean ship here too.. Like, he uses an iphone for the credit card POS, and he can't even print your receipt, only email it or text it to you. He's the only one working there, and it's a truck.. So considering his bare minimum overhead, i would expect to get a little more food for the money.. And maybe he could replace that dangling screen with a more sanitary sliding one.... read more

I was very surprised at this place. Your average looking taco truck but the prices were quite high for a taco truck... But it makes sense when you try the fresh caught fish tacos with sauces made from scratch, with the perfect amount of spicy. The Barbacoa and chalupas were excellent. The proprietor is also very nice and wiped down the rainy tables for us. Absolutely worth the $15 for the tacos. read more

These were the best taco's of my life. I was there in May of this year and I'm still thinking about them. I ordered the ahi tacos for lunch, and tired going back later that night for dinner, but alas I was too slow what with the taco coma and all. I live in California when I'm not visiting Kauai that .000003% of my life, so I know my way around a taco. It wasn't the most authentic taco I've ever had, but who cares; best is still the best. I kind of laugh when I hear reviews of how expensive the place is. How much was that pizza you ordered in Kalaheo? How much was it to fill up your Dodge Caravan rental? How much did that Luau set you back at the Grand Hyatt? Well, you get my point. Kauai is an expensive place, and this place is no different from the pulled pork sandwich place down the street that set me back 10 bucks, except this place is better. Was a very bland taste, and there was nothing remarkable about this place except for the high cost. We will not be going back. It's possible we hit it on a bad day. Really great shrimp tacos. Out of Scampi Diablo when we arrived and fish tacos (which I had been craving for several days) but we stopped to check out this "taco truck" and were great rewarded. Both my husband and I had the shrimp which were marinated in lime juice, garlic and a cajun seasoning. They were sitting on top of a mix of cabbage and topped with guacamole and salsa. So good we ordered a second plate! My 10 year old daughter declared her pork burrito was "just right" in terms of spiciness (which means some but not too hot) and we are all hoping to go back for the fish tacos (either Ono or Ahi) another day. Good prices, and the owner knows what he's doing. Originally from Veracruz Mexico he grew up cooking with his mother. OK, you KNOW that is a good sign. I like chalupas! The first time I ate there I had the chalupas with babacoa, which is meat that has been braised for hours! Yummmy!! The next thing I had was the tamales, which came with rice and beans! And it only takes about 5min to get it! Delicioso!:) Fast authentic mexican food! Can't beat that! read more

I posted a great review on this site on 10/13 and it's disappeared! So I'm posting another because people should know about this place. When we were there on vacation, we found this place and ate there every day! Yes, it was that good. Let me say that I'm not crazy about food trucks, nor Mexican food for that matter, but this place made me a fan. I tried all the tacos--fish, shrimp, chicken, pork and steak. All of them were cooked perfectly--juicy with lots of flavor and tasted really fresh. The fish taco was a good sized fillet. Price-wise, I think it compares to any other place on the island--and because the food is good, it's so worth it. I didn't try the burritos, but I can stand up for the tacos! read more

This is a great place. Once we discovered it we were back every day for a lunch or just a snack. Quality food. Friendly. Perfect for Kauai. The tortillas are home made and are awesome. A good corn torilla can be like candy to me and these are in that category. The meats are well marinated and everything is as fresh as can be - rice, beans, taco fillings. This is in a "lunch truck" but the quality is there. 3 tacos are $7.50. The prices are OK for Kauai. read more

Great spot near Poipu for quick and tasty meal. I had the namesake Chalupa plate, which came with flavorful beans and rice for an extra $2. Fish was fresh and well cooked, everything else was also fresh which isn't always true on Kauai. Would have given 5 stars but none of our dishes had any heat. their chicken tacos are amazing. i just started ordering the chicken burrito and that is really good as well! it is pricey, but your on an island so its expected. the people that work here are really nice as well. the rice is sometimes a little dry, but the beans are tasty! i love a good chalupas meal. definitely ordering here in the future, not to mention i get half off, that always makes it taste better :) read more
