The cake was the perfect mix of savory and soft, and the pudding was so refreshing with big chunks of mango! They have a promo right now, 3 for $10, which is a steal when most pastries are around $4 each these days. But honestly, I'll keep coming back because the energy of that cashier just made my day. Got a few pastries including the Taro Salted Egg Bun, Taro mochi and Black Sesame mochi. The taro salted egg bun was huge and even though filled only halfway with taro paste and salted egg, the filling was very flavorful and enough for the size of the bread. The layers and colors on the mochi pastries are so defined and vibrant. The inside is filled with chewy mochi which is very mildly sweet. Very reasonably priced - I think you can get any 3 items for $10 which is a steal because they are one of the few stores that put a lot of effort on their packaging. read more

On the way to the subway stop after lunch, Age and I passed Bake Culture. This is a fairly small cozy cafe on the Bowery near Canal. It seems similar to the Korean bakeries with trays to place your picks. The large cream covered cakes look aesthetically beautiful. I saw a large croissant crisp cookie that was half covered in chocolate. One cost $4.99 and three were for $10. I bought one and ate it at home. When I opened the package the cookie immediately deflated as so eating it had no pleasure. Even though it had nuts in it the cookie was soggy and I felt sad. The hot dog tasted more like vienna sausage, was not the usual hot dog length and it was 90% bun to 10% sausage. Taro sliced bread - was so excited to try this bread. The one good thing is this is not sweet. The bad thing was there was barely any taro taste. The bread also felt a little hard. Lemon bun - this was my favorite and redemption for the bakery. This is not my first rodeo at Bake Culture as I usually frequent the Flushing/Northern Blvd. location. This visit I have to say, the best baked goods I did manage to pick were the Golden Nugget cake (coconut, yummy), the classic croissant, and the egg tarts. Only thing, many had a "burnt" top which was less than appealing. But it tasted fine otherwise. I don't usually like it that way. Truth be told their prices are a bit high especially for a Chinatown location. Each bun I picked up averaged about $2.95 each. I was disappointed by the cheese buns and the bacon ones I picked as well. Lacked in flavor somehow. Ingredients were there, just fell flat for me. The drinks were great - especially since I picked two with some fresh cut fruit in them. I'd return for those. And maybe to check out the cakes next time. But the buns I'll skip. read more

I had high expectations for their bread since they were pricer than surrounding bakeries in Chinatown and I was greatly disappointed. I bought a TW pineapple bun, pork floss bun and a bun with lemon vanilla custard inside. Bought them in the afternoon and had them in the evening and they were all very hard and dry. What a cute and fun bake shop! When I stopped in on May 14, they had just opened and were setting up. They have a variety of buns, layered desserts and sweet breads along with coffee and water. The layout makes it super easy to see everything on their shelves and all of the matcha cakes are stored in the glass case. I ordered the matcha layered cake and been curd pastry ball. Both were so so so good. The match cake was light and airy and the bean curd was delicious. I did warm it up a bit to soften the bean curd which I highly recommend if you're waiting a few days to enjoy it. When I'm in the area again, I will definitely be back for my dessert. read more

In my quest for egg tarts in Chinatown, I found Bake Culture on Yelp and couldn't resist when I saw they had $1 egg tarts. I will say that I did find another delicious egg tart, same size, for $1.10, so the price isn't that much of a difference, but Bake Culture does accept credit cards unlike a lot of the other places in Chinatown, so that's a plus! The egg tart was freshly baked (still warm!) and very custardy - more Portuguese-style. For the $1 price point, it is well worth it. There was limited seating. I wanted to dine in but all of the seats were full so I had to go outside. Luckily it was a nice, spring day. What really earns this place five stars is the customer service. All of the employees were super friendly and their care shines through. Solid egg tart, you won't be disappointed. read more

We shared a slice mango crepe cake, the 'German pudding', an egg tart and a cold rose tea drink w/o bubbles~$14. The pudding has the same filling as the egg tart. So, best go with the egg tart. The rose tea drink was very artificial tasting as with all the other bubble drink type. crepe cake was good too but not lady M great. Walking in it definitely a Paris baguette knock off which in itself is a knock off of a French bakery in my opinion. For a twist, very handsome Asian men are decorated/displayed at the entrance and inside the place. In a bakery, I would assume there would be images of baked good stuff or a flour mill.
