I love pork floss, and I love sponge cake rolls. The two combined, with flecks of scallion, was a hit. Although prices rose after the egg shortage, 10 pieces for $5.50 felt reasonable. Dropped by I've the weekend and picked up a red bean pastry and a couple savory pork and peanut zongzi 粽子 (sticky rice with filling wrapped in bamboo leaves and steamed). I enjoyed both--the red bean pastry had a flaky exterior and good amount of filling inside, very much a traditional Chinese snack. The zongzi were tasty and the fillings were most and tasty and not too salty, which I appreciated. A note that these are sitting on the counter un-refrigerated so best to consume soon after purchase, or take home to freeze. They sell a variety of sweet and savory versions and the signs for these are in Chinese so you'll need to either read Chinese or know someone who does to ask if each variety is available. As for bakery items, they carry packs of sweet and savory mantou 饅頭 (steamed buns w/out filling), bao 包子 (steamed buns with filling), bread, cookies, as well as different baked buns with filling and other traditional Chinese pastries. I'm reluctant to write a review about this place because it's going to be my new go-to bakery after my childhood NYC bakery went out of business during the COVID pandemic. I was looking for an old school bakery that has been around for decades, with Asian ladies working behind the counter, and rows of baked goods all around the store. This place is it! I admit I turned to Yelp to find that old school bakery, and it pointed me to a place that was good, but overpriced and with baked goods that had shrunk in size compared to when I was a kid. This place does not do either thing - it's still cheap (cash only of course) and the baked goods are still the same size. Great: Amazing airy and melt-in your mouth spongecake Skip: A gritty desert-like walnut cake. As an Asian bakery fanatic purist, I find myself avoiding the classy shops with fanciful cake art and possibly even clean floors and while AC'd rooms, but magnetically drawn to visible ovens, overheated and cramped shops with baked goods stacked to the ceilings and lines of Chinese grandmothers jumping the line to get the last red bean paste pastry. M & W is your shop for traditional Asian bakeries with super affordable and delicious offerings (my favorite being the spongecake) and expansive selection of pretty-looking (and I'm sure delicious) delicate cakes. Saturday 9/10/2022 around 10 Amish. Ordered 2 roast pork buns, 4 sponge cakes, and an iced coffee. Roast pork buns were good I just wish they were warmer. Sponge cakes were fresh and melt in your mouth. Iced coffee was very sweet but, went will with the pork buns. Current favorite place for the Chinese, "Pineapple Buns"! They taste like the ones I had growing up - nice and golden on top, with an even sugary coating that makes for a light and crispy bite along with the doughy bun. Yum! You also can't beat the weekly discounts they have here: 2 for $1 (on selective) pastries and buns on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (all day)! I'd suggest getting the: egg tarts, pineapple buns, pineapple bun w/ red bean filling. Fluffy cakes and egg tarts here are one of the best I've found yet. The egg tarts have this ultra flaky shell and smooth filling. The triangle cakes are also one of my favorite morning, mid-morning, afternoon snacks. It's not too sweet, a thin layer of fresh cream, and the fluffiest moist cake you'll find. M & W is one of the original old timer bakery in Chinatown for many years, not a fancy trendy place to go but has its originality. My mom always send me here for her favorite whole wheat bread "Mon Tow" that sales in a package. I forgot how many in a bag but I believe at least six for approx. $3.25. If I can give it NO stars I would. Their bake goods are average like everywhere else. The wedding cakes are HORRIBLE. DO NOT BE DECIEVED by the wedding cakes in the window!!!. They will say they'll make it like pictured but at the end..without your consent they will make it with left over items and completely different. My friend received her wedding cake with rainbow dots everywhere, sloppy frosting, and each layer was CRACKED!. It looked like it was for a gay wedding. I ordered a wedding cake here. They have great designs and great prices. BUT THEY FREAKING DELIVERED THE WRONG CAKE!! I don't know who's order got mixed up but I was so upset. When they delivered it, I told them it was wrong and the delivery ppl asked us to call them. When my bridesmaids called, they said it was 6pm and the boss left already. There was nothing I could do except keep the cake. The next day when I went to the bakery to talk to them...they said they couldn't do anything cuz we ate the cake. I found this place on accident when I was looking for a quick bite before going to my Ortho's office which is nearby. I am a big fan of their egg custard which is made just the way I like it. A crispy, loosely layered crust which fall apart when you bite into it and a delicious eggy center. I also like the pineapple bun, which has a nice, sweet layer of pineapple crumbs and a soft bun underneath. Best time to go is in the morning, everything is served fresh and straight out of the oven. :) read more

This seems to be a small bakery located on E Broadway.. I never really noticed it until I passed by and decided to just go in and have a look.. This bakery reminds me of a very traditional style of serving.. like the olden days where many old folks came in and ask for a cup of coffee and a bun.. and it reminds me of Malaysia.. :D The winter melon and red bean paste biscuit are really cheap.. all in a box for 2? don't remember.. but i remember is lot more cheaper than taipan and fay da.. Taipan and Fay Da are located in Canal where everyone passes by that's why the price are a little expensive.. but here.. You can see that the biscuits contain lots of paste.. unlike many bakeries.. the biscuit contains a lot of flour and probably 25% paste.. ish.. that's what happen to the bakeries in Taipan and FayDa.. I am just being honest.. Too bad.. they never sell it individually.. Great quick grab and go bakery with tasty breakfast and luncheon pastries. And great hot steaming coffee. Sweet pork bun - different from the steamed ones, these are baked. Delicious. Egg custard tarts yummy. Wonderful creamy corn bun. Pineapple bun very tasty. They also have sticky rice, and packaged buns as well as loaves of sandwich bread. It's tiny and often crowded with only two small tables - but you don't want to sit here and eat, it's grab and go and it's really worth it. I love the boxed almond cookies, super crunchy. They make very good egg custard tarts at this place, and the red bean bakes are mammoth. I always try to get my fill of red beans since they got more antioxidants than wild blueberries. It got sugar in it but to me sugar isn't a bad thing if you keep it low in your diet. Their roast pork buns are also pretty good at this place at the time of this writing. Two egg tarts for $1 from Thursday to Sunday! That's what I usually go there for. Given the price point, the egg tarts taste decent, though there isn't much filling. But they do the job.
