Absolutely meh. First the place was as freezing cold as a refrigerator. So cold that the cup killed my wife's latte before she could drink it. The oatmeal cookies are absolute crap. Topped with gloppy sugar, it lacked texture. Neither crisp, nor chewy, it isn't as good as whats on your HEB shelf. The final atrocity was the Croque monsieur. Somebody decided that it should be served barely warm, open faced, with paltry amounts of ham and cheese then submerged under white sauce, then topped with a limp dressed pile of arugula. NO! Absolutely crap! This sandwich is a particular treat for me that I have eaten around the US, and even France. Full disclosure, Bakery Lorraine is typically busy. We decided to go early in the morning in order beat the wait, but mostly because we had to walk our dog. When you arrive at Bakery Lorraine you are immediately greeted by ample seating and a relaxed but cozy atmosphere. Ordering was a breeze and the staff were friendly as well, offering a pup cup to our dog. They serve a variety of breakfast foods, pastries, coffee, and so on. We decided to order a grilled cheese with roasted potatoes and a chai latte (they come in mugs if you dine in, if you care about that kind of stuff). They bring it out to you which is nice, especially when you fine outdoors. The chai latte came first and was phenomenal. We like whole milk for the thicker texture and that's exactly what we got. The spice of the chai was perfect and with the cinnamon powder finish there's not enough good we can say about it. The grilled cheese was good, not great. It came on toasted sourdough bread which is the better bread choice, sorry to those who prefer white. It was made with white cheese that was tasty, just not the way we like it as we prefer yellow cheese. It is by no means a bad sandwich and this could very simply be chalked up to a difference in preferences. I would still recommend it as a sandwich and we look forward to trying the other ones that they have in the future. As for the roasted potatoes, we were not fans. The potatoes were very skin heavy giving it an almost filmy taste on some. The seasoning was good and they were cooked well, it's just the texture that was a bit of a throw off. Ultimately, Bakery Lorraine is a great cafe that fits well into the premium retail space the Domain offers. I think if I'd gotten it iced it would've have strawberry whipped cream; not sure but that was listed on the menu but I didn't taste any strawberry in my drink. So - the normal 3 - Food -good, coffee and breads pricey but the value is mostly there (28$ for a sandwich and coffee) - so good enough. Interior - well done - nice outdoor seating as well. Inside is comfy. Service - Well 20 mins for a drip coffee and a roll that is already sitting in the display. It is not just the line or popularity. Something is truly broken in the management of the front of the house. So frustrating to just watch them "work" - they all look so tired and move so inefficiently. I can't deal with it again. I gave them two chances - both same effect but with different shifts. So it is the shop mgmt, not the individuals.. Next time I went across the street and the service was 30 seconds for a drip coffee and the staff were normal speed/coverage. So if you are in any type of a hurry - avoid this place. Back when I lived in North Austin, it was part of my Sunday ritual, but after moving to South Austin (a 45-minute drive), I haven't been able to visit as often as I'd like. Coming back after so long? My order was a must, but to be honest what really made it great was their lemon vinaigrette salad. So refreshing to pair with the sandwich. Please note I did swap for the salad instead of having the traditional side of chips and very happy I did. I don't know if it's made in house, but it was a superb match on this buisness' part. Turkey pesto sandwich: Also extremely yummy, nice crunch, and great quality. Again, don't know how much they make in house but it is so well done and everything tastes quality! Fries with garlic aioli: Please tell me why these were the best and most perfect fries I have ever had. It sounds crazy right, a simple potato cut into pieces. The sandwiches were good, but I will definitely come back just for multiple orders of these fries again. They are fried well and the pairing of their aioli is what helps make them. One thing I don't like is soggy fries so these may the fry mark for me. Vanilla latte and chai latte: Can I throw these in the same category. Okay I was not as a fan of their drinks, but to be fair, I wouldn't necessarily think of coffee when I think of this place. It's the food for me that does it. Macaroons: The early grey and dark chocolate Lavendar were everything. The way they package them for you is also the cutest. All the pastries look so lovely, and the ones we ordered tasted so, too. Thick creamy center for the cheese Danish. The ratio of cream cheese-pastry surprised me; I was expecting maybe half the amount of cream cheese based on my usual experience with cheese Danishes and was very happy to taste how smooth, rich, and creamy the filling was. Pain au chocolat was flakey, and I bought fruit tarts as a gift to a friend. The store can get busy, and there could be a solid long line at times. The staff were friendly and were fast to clean up tables. Pastries get warmed up and served really fast, but I do wish I'd got the drinks (coffees) with the pastries or even before them. It was not that long of a wait, but on that day I already took pictures, took a couple of bites of the food, and then had to stop myself so I could enjoy my coffee-pastry set.
