Alrighty so on a summer night, this place is bomb for bananas. Really great alternative to the typical ice cream run, and all sorts of delicious toppings. We got The Afternoon Delight: dipped in chocolate, vanilla, pb; topped with graham crackers and nuts, and The Joe Banana: dipped in chocolate; topped with crushed coffee beans, "with cream and sugar" aka toffee and cinnamon. The Afternoon Delight was yummmmy but kind of typical tasting, ya feel? Sort of like those vanilla cones covered in chocolate and nuts. The Joe Banana, however, is where it's AT. Coffee. Chocolate. Banana. It's like they know my soul. Don't even get me started on the addition of toffee and cinnamon too. There's a nice picnic table area next to the stand (surrounded by a bunch of other food trucks), which is semi-covered and nice to relax at while flinging chocolate/banana crumbs everywhere. In honor of the recent relaunch of the beloved banana stand centric series Arrested Development, I decided a pilgrimage to Austin's very own banana stand was in order to pay homage to the frozen treat that has garnered a hefty following thanks to the aforementioned show. Located in the So-Fi (South First Street) Food Trailer park, Banarchy is an unassuming wood cart enclosure that looks like it should be on some pier is So-Cal or on a beach in Waikiki; instead it has put down anchor in the hippie-tropics of South Austin. My frozen-phallic shaped fruit/dessert minded tastebuds and I are so very glad they did! Unlike the Bluth Frozen Banana Stand, Banarchy has concocted more delicious mutations of frozen banana options than the standard "Chocolate w/Nuts". Seriously, I never knew frozen bananas had so many mouthwatering "outfits" (88 in all if you "keep it simple"). And when someone who is usually not a big fan of bananas in general, especially the unfrozen variety, says this unusual dessert whose roots go back to the 1933 World's Fair is "mouthblowingly" good, it is advice worth heeding! Of the six specialty banana options, the "Joe Banana" was my hands-down favorite; for a coffee addict such as myself, a frozen banana doused with crushed coffee beans was a delectable no-brainer! Though I usually take my coffee black, I went for the sweetness of the "cream and sugar" option with no regrets! The other highly recommended choice was the "Hippy Dippy"; with the vegan chocolate option covered with granola, craisins, and cinnamon, not only was this one surprisingly super delish, it might just inspire you to trade in your cross-trainers for Birkenstocks and start a drum circle! Should you need to quench your thirst or proudly display your inner Banarchist, they offer Cielo bottled water for $1.50, which benefits a local non-profit, and sell t-shirts for $15. Though previously you had to plan ahead by hitting up an ATM or an unsuspecting yuppie for some cold hard cash to purchase anything at this formerly cash only anti-establishment establishment, that is no longer the case. Bananarchy has not only embraced capitalism, but also Square. So if you are in the mood to satiate the tummy grumblings of your inner-revolutionary, all you need is some plastic and your finger-tipped ready John Hancock. Viva la Revolucion!
