I found this place thanks to all of the other helpful Yelp reviewers that came before me. Thank you! It's such a rare pleasure to be able to give out a five star review, and I'm very happy to do that for Bangkok Thai. For this meal, I'd brought a date with me that had limited experience with non-western cuisines but was expressing some interest in trying. Personally, I'm not very experienced with Thai food myself, but I everything looked so good I had to try. This is a small, intimate restaurant. I'd even almost want to call it romantic. They care about how it looks and while it was appointed in a cost-effective way, it didn't come off as overly cheap. The space was warm, comfortable, inviting. My date got a couple of small plates as her meal. I will warn you, as you might expect, sometimes unusual requests may not be well understood by the staff who don't speak English as well as you and I. We did say to bring the appetizers out at the same time as the meal, and that was misunderstood. No big deal. We also ordered some hot green tea and the hot water kept coming out. They had very good attention to service throughout our meal and seemed to anticipate our needs. For my meal, I wanted to make sure I ordered the right thing. The menu is *huge*. There is a whole page just for different curries. I talked to our friendly server and told her I was in the mood for a curry, asking which one was her personal favorite, and she aimed me at the green curry which I ordered with mixed vegetables over jasmine rice. Let me just say, the vegetarian options here are pretty broad. The veggies were very fresh. I asked for "mildly spicy" which, if you're not used to southeast asian cuisine, can still be pretty spicy to the western palate. Personally, I loved it. One of the other servers, maybe the manager or owner, came over to our table after we were finished eating and welcomed us to the restaurant. She asked if it was our first time, and how we learned about the restaurant. She was really trying to stay plugged into where her customers are coming from, and sincerely gauging our satisfaction with the experience. I did let her know that we consult Yelp first before eating and she said she's heard that from other customers, as well. Anyway, just to say, the staff here was really genuinely warm and friendly, attentive to our needs. What blew me away was when I got the check. The food was so delicious and fresh, and there was so much of it I couldn't possibly finish. But the two of us together totaled $25 and change for dinner. I wasn't expecting it to be so reasonably priced. I'm a fan. I can't wait to go back and explore the menu some more! read more

My father got a chicken (and tofu) soup. He really enjoyed it. I had the red curry duck. The curry was delicious. Fresh bamboo shoots all over the duck, well-presented; the only issue that I had was the duck not being as palatable as I'd hoped. The exterior was a touch too crispy at times, and I ran into a nice collection of bones. The meat also lacked some flavor. As far as I'm concerned, for Thai food in a strip mall, this is A-OK. Healthy and quick, excellent service, and very clean (with a proudly displayed 97.5 sanitation rating). Perhaps skip the duck. read more

While visiting Raleigh for the weekend (my hotel was 20 minutes away), a friend suggested Bangkok Thai on a whim. I thoroughly enjoyed the Drunken Noodles with Vegetables. So much so that I returned the next day to order more for take out. The ambiance inside is nice and subdued. It's dimly lit and a bit small. Cozy from our booth on the other side of the entrance. The waitress for friendly and kept our cups filled. Such a delight! read more

We were so excited to try this place for the first time. We were ordering for 5 people. We ordered 4 entrees and summer rolls. 2 shrimp curries at $14.95/each and there were 6 shrimp in each dish. Very small portion. Ordered 2 additional chicken dishes & didn't have much protein either. Not sure if we'd return due to the cost for the portion. Definitely can't recommend the shrimp summer rolls. Shrimp was slimy/cold/seemed undercooked. We tossed. :-/ I ordered around 2.30p online, clicked dinner entrees, was charged for dinner entrees but it seems they were lunch portions? From the outside, it looks like your average thai restaurant, tucked between a Tuesday Morning and Ruby Tuesday. But trust me, it's not. When you walk in you get greeted by Du-ke, the owner who's due to have her 2nd baby in October. The true happiness she expresses to see you immediately makes you feel at home here. Here they take the time to learn your name, make you happy, and encourage you to come back. We just came back from lunch. The lunch special is a great deal. You get to pick 1 appetizer, 1 entree, and one drink for $8. The portions are large and soda comes with free refills. I had the fried tofu, massaman curry (mild), and thai iced tea. My daughter had the See Yew (chicken) dinner portion. The See Yew is wide rice noodles with egg, a soy sauce dressing and some vegetable bits. It's fantastic. Give it a try. Du-Ke's husband is the chef. The food is authentic thai cuisine, made fresh, and served hot. The fried tofu was crisp, not at all greasy, and comes served with a sweet chili and peanut dipping sauce. I would have like the tofu to have been brushed with soy sauce prior to the frying, but I can't complain. The thai iced tea was delicious. Sweet, loaded with ice, and with a right ratio of tea-cream to make it a satisfying thirst quencher. This is our 3rd time to Bangkok Thai. The first time we went for takeout, my family loved it so much they insisted on going a second time - the next day! The fried rice is a bazillion times better than chinese fried rice, and healthier. The papaya salad is made perfectly right, with green papaya's and a fresh dressing. oh, and if you have a gluten problem, they have gluten-free soy sauce they can use. The fact that they have rice noodles also provides choice for gluten allergic folks that makes it so much easier. Bottom line, we're going back again and again. You should too! read more

I got take out here a few weeks ago with my wife and parents so I can't comment on the service and dining experience. However, the food was awesome! We all really enjoyed everything. I did not call ahead so it took a little while to get everything prepared but it was well worth the wait. We had the Pineapple Fried Rice, Pad Thai, and the Cashew Nut stir fry. It was very satisfying. Although I did not eat there, the workers seemed very friendly when taking my order. I will definitely be back. read more

I have eaten in Thai restaurants all over the U.S. as well as throughout Europe. I will say that this is, without a doubt, the most vegetarian-friendly Thai restaurant I've even patronized. The fact that they use a mushroom-based stock in just about all of their dishes amounts to a more unique and flavorful base than in typical Thai restaurants. I've spoken with the owner (Duke) and listen to her describe the way her husband prepares the meals. Through reading and research I've done, I've discovered that this is a much more authentic way of cooking than typical Thai restaurants in the U.S. Do yourself a favor and try Bangkok Thai. I'm an American who lives in Thailand. So, seeing how I eat actual Thai food every day when in Thailand, I tend to appreciate authentic Thai food. Which is often hard to find in the States. We ended up here because Yelp was offering a coupon and the place has a 4-and-a-half star rating. Sweet! When we got there I was relieved to see that Bangkok Thai is owned AND staffed by actual Thais. Novel idea, right?! We came with a group of six. Each of us ordered the lunch special, which gives a mini appetizer, drink, and main dish for $8. I sampled all the dishes and was impressed with every one. The Pad Thai was fresh, cooked perfectly, and with plenty of peanut and a bit of sugar (like many Thais enjoy it in Thailand). The Tom Ka (Gai) soup was delicious. Even the Thai iced tea and coffee were near perfect. But the best was my daughter's Yellow Curry. She asked for it "Thai spicy", and it was awesome! A very minor complaint was that my Massaman Curry was not spicy, as I had requested. And my father-in-law's Green Curry was spicier than he asked for. But, hey... it WAS delicious. So that saved the day. I'm not sure if Bangkok Thai beats my long-standing go-to favorite Sawasdee (in Raleigh). But it sure is close! And kudos to them for avoiding Fish Sauce and Shrimp Paste in order to have a vegetarian-friendly shop. It's hard to avoid those ingredients and still create amazing food. Their thai food is a bit on the sweeter side, but it was still enjoyable. The spicy basil chicken had a generous amount of fresh vegetables. Their spicy scale is on the spicy side, so be warned. I got a 2 (aka medium) and it was burning my tongue a little bit. Delicious and very filling. For someone who worked downtown Raleigh, and spends almost at least $15/lunch when I eat out. $8 feels great for my wallet. read more

I got to take daughter #1 there, just the two of us. Lovely little space in a typical strip mall. We seemed to be the first people there of the evening, which was kind of cool and kind of odd. But then again, it was like 5:30 on a Saturday night. I guess a lot of people don't eat that early on the weekend. But when you have a hungry child, you do! Anyway, we ordered an appetizer and 2 dishes, and a few more people came in, which was good to see. Everything was fresh and lovely and SPICY. I've been to some places that when they say spicy, they mean horribly unspicy, but this definitely worked. Yay! My daughter was getting over a cold, so she took most of her salad home, but there was NOTHING left on my plate when I was done. I don't think I left even a single noodle. My family and I have been frequenting this restaurant since they opened years ago and we have never had a single dish we didn't like. Their curries, fried rices, stir fries, soups, and desserts are all delicious and made with fresh ingredients. This is just about as good as it gets for Wakefield! I've had great service every time I've been in (which is, admittedly, a lot of times); the same people are always there and you can tell that they really do care. I have three favorite dishes that I rotate between: Panang Curry, Pad Thai, and the Thai spaghetti (I believe that's what it's called -- this dish was personally created by the owner and is exclusive to the restaurant). All three always taste great! I've lunched here with several people who have ordered different dishes and they have always raved about their food, too. Their lunches are also well-priced at 7.99 for an appetizer, meal, and drink! If you're ever in/near Wake Forest, this is one of the few restaurants worth going to. read more

My family and I LOVE LOVE LOVE to come here for lunch or dinner. You can't beat their lunch deal - appetizer, dish, rice and a drink. Dinner portions are great - sometimes a little too big so you can make two meals out of it. Favs: Thai iced tea or coffee; garden salad is so simple but delicious; tofu soup warms you right up!; papaya salad is always refreshing - it goes have a kick and can be made vegetarian; green and Panang curries are awesome; garlic sauce, spicy eggplant, and Thai basil are all bursting with flavor; and drunken noodles are awweeesome. The service is always great. The staff is helpful and friendly. The owner is often in and greeting folks when she can. Restaurant itself is pretty small so it can get a little tight but we enjoy that part. They do A LOT of takeout so don't let the smaller number of people actually eating there fool you. She finally agreed to have lunch with me and Bangkok Thai did not disappoint! She ordered the Pad Thai Noodles and I had Drunken Noodles. The service was great. I went there again for dinner tonight and have to drop it down a star only because, again, my food just wasn't hot (spicy). I made a point of telling our server I wanted my Seafood Basil dish three Thai hot. She even held up her fingers to show she understood three and I nodded and said that I like my food really hot. It wasn't. I went with a group of nine friends and they all enjoyed their food so count them in on the positive column of this short review. My dish was good, too, just not (you guessed it) hot and the heat is one of the most pleasing aspects of Thai food for me. The staff there was great, as they were the last time I went. They are attentive without hovering and they never gave any indication we couldn't sit and take up that much space all night, should that have been what we wanted. I appreciate that kind of service. Bangkok Thai has always had great lunch deals that are available even on the weekends, but we always felt the food was lackluster. We went back recently and the menu has changed to include more choices and the food tastes so much better! For $8, you get an appetizer, your choice of main, and a drink. Your choice of drink includes options like Thai Iced tea and coffee. Although these two are non-refillable, there is no other restaurant we know of that offers that. It's a great plus in my book. The best mains here are the fried noodle dishes like the Pad Kee Mao and Kua Gai. You can really taste the "Wok Hei" - the smoky or charred flavor of the wok. This means the chef really knows how to work a wok. The panang curry was very rich and creamy. It was stated on their board that they offer GF options and brown rice. Quality and speed of service was great. The place is small, but modern and cozy. We're looking forward to coming back here again! read more

When I moved to North Carolina from Connecticut, I didn't think I would have good Thai food again. Bangkok Thai surprised me though. I had the Pad Thai three times, and it was absolutely delicious every time. The shrimp in the Pad Thai is perfectly sauteed and seasoned, and the noodles are juicy. It has a perfect amount of heat and some sweet elements as well. Very flavorful, very satisfying. I definitely plan to try more dishes. The service is also speedy, and the people are very pleasant. I am withholding that fifth star for atmosphere. It feels too store-front-y. This could be easily avoided by hanging decorative curtains on the windows. And the walls could use some color. Other than that though, I would say this restaurant has a lot of potential. I am very happy for the owners, this place will continue to get better and more popular. read more

We had a nice meal here with pad thai (okay but not good, and the beef was dry) Ramen Curry (very good despite the same noodle type being used as the pad Thai; flavor is top notch). Also had the coconut soup which was on point and chicken wings were good. Chicken Satay was average. Overall worth the 50 bucks for three people. Although we were disappointed that with a party of three one of the meals was unexplainably delivered to our table about 10-15 minutes after the other two. Within days of letting the server take the card, I began getting fraudulent charges from a Asian designer clothes company. I contacted the restaurant and they would not return my emails or calls. I had the soft shell crab. Crab was nice and crispy and sauce was great, but broccoli was a little cold and other veggies were a bit too crisp. My wife had the veggie pad thai, which had cripsy tofu in it that she did not care for, but she ate around it and liked the dish. I ordered take-out, chicken pad thai and crab wantons. I'm happy to cut a restaurant a good bit of slack when I order takeout, because inevitably, my food will not taste as fresh. But in this case, the food did not sit longer than 10 minutes and it just wasn't good. The crab wantons were a thinner wrapper than I prefer (think spring roll wrapper rather than egg roll wrapper) and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but they were soggy and the filling was very salty. The pad thai was very heavy on the lime, the chicken was dry, and it was filled with 4 chicken nugget sized chunks of tofu. It was disappointing. Maybe it was an off night, or maybe I ordered the wrong thing. Perhaps you just need to dine in. Good luck. read more
