I went in for breakfast on a Saturday at 11:30. I ordered coffee, biscuits and gravy, and two eggs over medium. My coffee was lukewarm. My eggs were cooked over hard. Bantam + Biddy opened late 2012 in Ansley Mall near Starbucks. A second location opened a couple months ago on Crescent Ave. in Midtown. This restaurant is a casual farm-to-table restaurant founded by Yeah! Burger's Shaun Doty. I like the concept because most farmstead fare restaurants, like Empire State South and Miller Union, are generally upscale and pricier. Bantam + Biddy serves similarly sourced cuisine, but in a casual environment with affordable prices. The specialty is poultry -- "Bantam" and "Biddy" are words typically used to describe chickens or hens. This place started out as a fast-casual restaurant, but now includes table service. The atmosphere is relaxed. The bar looks into an open kitchen, there are small TVs playing ESPN, there's an outdoor patio, and the servers wear t-shirts and jeans. Just inside the entrance is a small glass display case with farm fresh eggs and cheese and an assortment of pastries and Sublime Doughnuts for sale. Bantam + Biddy uses organic ingredients, free-range chicken, and grass-fed beef. They offer many gluten-free and vegetarian options. Breakfast is served daily (Mon-Fri, until 11:30am; Sat-Sun, until 3:00pm) and includes menu items such as chopped chicken liver on toast, poutine (fries with cheese curds and gravy), pork schnitzel, and chicken & waffles. Most breakfast entrees are $8 or less. The lunch/dinner menu features larger versions of some of the aforementioned breakfast items plus other dishes like pimento cheese with veggies and toast, rotisserie chicken, Southern-style veggie plates, chicken tenders, and chicken pot pie. I've enjoyed everything I've tried so far at this restaurant, which includes: Hot boiled peanuts Pastured deviled eggs with bourbon smoked paprika Rotisserie chicken penne pasta with basil pesto Meatloaf made with grass-fed beef and "Kentuckyaki" gravy Organic quinoa & spinach salad Duck fat fries Boiled peanuts are a Georgia tradition. Bantam + Biddy's rendition is quite good. The shell-on peanuts are served in a large bowl, sitting in some of the same water they were boiled in. The peanuts are expectedly soft and salty. Your fingers and hands will get wet eating this dish. It's intended and great for sharing. The pastured (free range) deviled eggs are delicious. Three eggs come with each order. It's hard to find deviled eggs much better than these. The flavoring of the fillings is mild and the consistency is smooth and appetizing throughout. You can tell they're made fresh. I'm surprised at how tender and juicy the (white meat) rotisserie chicken in the penne pasta is. At some point, while eating this dish, I had to make a conscious effort to differentiate between whether I was chewing a chunk of chicken or a chunk of cheese. The pasta is accompanied with cherry tomatoes and a slice of jalapeno cheddar bread. Speaking of the jalapeno cheddar bread, you can see chunks of jalapeno in the bread. The bread is extra light and fluffy. It's savory enough so you don't have to put any condiments on it. A slice of jalapeno cheddar bread is also served with the meatloaf, a dish which I highly recommend. It's extremely tasty and you can tell the meatloaf is made with a leaner cut of beef. The "Kentuckyaki" gravy is a teriyaki sauce made with sorghum and bourbon, among other ingredients, so it has a unique flair. The meatloaf is seasoned well and each bite is equally satisfying. The quinoa and spinach salad is healthy and refreshing. The dressing is some sort of ginger dressing, so the salad has an Asian taste to it. Crisp and fresh. The fries are fried in duck fat. Duck fat is supposed to be healthier as it's lower in saturated fats and higher in unsaturated fats. The fries are softer (still have crispy exteriors, though), are a shade more brown, and have a hint more flavor. Try them. The servers are polite and attentive. I did my usual thing where I ask the cashier for her favorites to help me decide what to get. 1/4 CAROLINA CHICKEN - $10 The rotisserie chicken was moist, and came w/ jalapeno cheddar bread (good) and two sides (my favorite part the meal). There are 12 different sides and they all sounded so good - I went w/ the cashier's favorites, Pickled Beets & Goat Cheese and the Creamed Spinach. The beets were perfect and together w/ goat cheese, that more perfect. And I had never seen "pretty" creamed spinach until today - somehow it magically retained a nice green color and had the perfect balance of fresh taste and not being overly creamy. Full disclosure - I'm a big Shaun Doty fan, and have been since the days of yore and Mumbo Jumbo. And MidCity Cuisine. And Shaun's. I know I'll always be able to find tasty, delicious gluten free food in his restaurants. I had been wanting to check out Bantam + Biddy since it opened, but just never found myself at Ansley Mall when I was hungry. Luckily, I needed a spot to meet a friend for lunch who was driving into town from Decatur. Bantam + Biddy made the perfect spot, since there's loads of free parking and I needed to pick up a few items at Cook's Warehouse and Publix. Our server was sweet and helpful, taking care to note my gluten allergy. I opted for the meatloaf, which comes with two sides. I chose the duck fat fries first, because honestly, it is rare to be able to eat fries in a restaurant when you have a gluten allergy. Plus, duck fat! For my second item, I elected to try one of the daily vegetable specials, the collard greens. My friend chose the Southern Cobb salad, but without blue cheese and with balsamic vinaigrette. Unfortunately, both of us had to go back to work, so I wasn't able to sample one of B+B's signature cocktails. Next time, for sure. When our food arrived, there appeared to be several mixups. The biggest issue was the presence of the jalapeno cheddar bread on my plate, which is not gluten free. Oops. Here's when B+B earned its fifth star. Within minutes, Lance Gummere, co-owner and operations manager, appeared at our table with complementary GF cookies, apologized for the errors, and assured us the correct plates would be out soon. Which, in fact, they were. Oh, the food! I haven't tasted meatloaf this good since, well, I'm not sure I've ever had meatloaf this good. It was hard to save some to take home for my husband to try. [Side note - my husband is not a fan of meatloaf and never makes it for me, but I knew if he tried this he'd like it. And I was right!] The duck fat fries were worth every extra calorie, and the collards were nicely spiced. Even the GF bread was above par. My friend's salad looked amazing, and she polished off every bite. We didn't have any room left over for the cookies, but I had a nibble before packing them away in a to-go box and I'm glad I did. The consistency was more fudge brownie than cookie, and I mean that in the best sense. Looking forward to an after dinner treat tonight! So glad B+B is in the neighborhood. I am quite torn about this place ... it is sitting between a 3 and a 4 really. Firstly, the food was a bit better than okay, but it did not really hit the spot. I had the meat loaf platter that came with two sides: spinach and quinoa salad and sweet potato fries ... at 12.50 for the plate, it was pretty good. The meatloaf was good, but I must say that the meatloaf I make at home is much better than this. I hated the fact that they called the tomato sauce on top as "tomato gravy" which gave me a much different expectation ... I also enjoyed the cornbread muffin. i was able to try the grits and biscuits from my friend's plate, and although she was not too impressed with hers, I actually liked both of them. I had the moscow mule for a drink, and i was not too impressed with it though ... all in all, i was in very great company and had a great time, but the server we had was NOT on point at all. she forgot our napkins, extra cheese, silverware, and refilling our water, and when she did came by, she poured water on my friend's sprite and walked on away ... it took as a while to flag someone down and have this mistake corrected. At one point, my friend asked her how much extra would it be to have cheese grits instead, and our server just agreed, and walked away without answering the question. lol. It's comforting, generously portioned food, but served in a style that makes you feel like you're probably not trashing your body or the environment. It's feel good food for the new generation of Atlantans. I personally recommend the veggie platter. This was def a diner style restaurant with its cozy atmosphere. The service was very adorable. Even near closing time, everyone was nice and cordial. The fried chicken with the cheddar waffle was pretty good. The chicken tenders looked shrunken though, but it was pretty soft and good. I guess that's what my friend and I get for coming in pretty close to closing time. But then again, I had an image of the chicken tenders to be large and fluffy. The thing wasn't coated with a heavy flour, it was just the perfect combo for a fried chicken/tender type item. My friend's meatloaf was a tad too dry. Thank goodness I didn't go with this choice. Ok, here are the facts: I walked in and was greeted by a young slender European American male. He said, "wait right here." I waited about 4 mins while having a conversation one the ph. He continued to collect his til and calculate his receipts. I asked, "how long?" His response was "I'm sorry buddy, take a seat at an empty table". I sat down and he brought a glass of water and a straw. He came back 3 mins later and asked if I "wanted to order anything". I asked for a menu and pointed to a card holder on the table. I explained that I didn't have the qr reader and would have to download it. He told me to use my ph's camera. After sitting there an additional 3 mins, I decided to leave. The concern for me was "lack of communication". I visited Bantam + Biddy for a midday brunch, and I was pleased to learn that breakfast is served until 3 p.m. on weekends (it's until 11:30 a.m. on weekdays). The menu selection has a variety of southern inspired dishes, with many gluten free and vegetarian options that don't compromise flavor whatsoever. Everything in the frier is cooked gluten free, so there's no worry about any traces of gluten if you are dealing with celiac. I was especially thrilled with the gluten free jalapeño cornbread -- paired with their delicious, slightly sweet, whipped butter -- it was a hit. The breakfast potatoes were delicious too. On top of that, our food came out super quickly once we placed our orders, and the coffee is freshly brewed at a coffee bar in the front of the restaurant. The aroma from the coffee brewing inside this restaurant was so strong I couldn't wait to try it. Starbucks was next door but I'd rather patronize small business owners. I have celiac disease, which means I'm allergic to gluten. This place is amazing. Have eaten there several times never got sick.

My friend and I had just completed a long neighborhood walk where we'd worked up a hunger on a Tuesday evening around 8 pm. She suggested Bantam+Biddy due to its outdoor patio seating option. We had forgotten to grab our masks but thankfully we were able to be seated without having to walk through the restaurant, and they warned us that we would not be able to use the restroom, which is understandable. I wanted to order everything on the menu but ultimately settled on the fried chicken and cheddar waffle (with +$1.50 upgrade to a bacon cheddar waffle). The waffle was light and had a great texture. The chicken was tenders, which I think can always come across a little dry since it's white meat, but it was still tasty. I had it with a side of kale caesar which was really no more than chopped kale with dressing, but it was still good. I'm not one to order a salad for dinner, but my friend got the Power House Salad which looked amazing and filling. We also split an order of the sweet potato fries. I wanted to give 5 stars just based on their extensive gluten-free menu. Everything was good. Just not great. I can only comment on the GF wings, chicken Brunswick stew, and GF jalapeño cornbread. The wings were good. A bit saucy and sweet for my taste, but they do have a slight kick too. I would have ordered them semi-dry had I realized how much sweetish sauce was on them. I did eat them all. The GF jalapeño corn muffin was okay. No complaints. I ate it too. I was excited about the chicken Brunswick stew. It was a very small portion, and I didn't finish it. It was lacking depth for me. I would have called it chicken tomatoey(?) vegetable soup. I'm really not trying to be a hater. The wings may just be a preference thing for me. I should give an extra star just for the GF options.
