I came here for a Sunday happy hour. It took about 7 minutes just to be offered water or hear from any waitstaff. The food was pretty good, but the rest of it was not. The spicy edamame was pretty basic. Our waitress kept taking our plates from us IMMEDIATELY. I could rarely get service, but damn she was on clearing our tables. My two friends and I wanted to have dinner Friday night. As expected, the wait was 1-1.5 hours so the hostess put our name down and suggested we ask the bartender if there was available seating since there was 4 open bar stools. Bartender was so rude and had such a short fuse with us. He said he only had 2 seats open, even though 4 seats were free. We later saw it was because he was reserving seats for his friends, which is why he didn't want to give away any seats. Once again, my girlfriends who are regulars at barchi, knew they don't regularly take reservations at the bar, so to have the bartender be rude and yell at us was uncalled for and unfair when the wait for a table was over an hour. When you're craving sushi, BarChi is the best place to go. On Sundays, they have happyhour almost all day! Their sushi is great! I like the setting inside. It's like a nightclub with pretty lights and good music. However, the service at the time that I went wasn't all that great. I'm surprised by all the not-so-good reviews! This place has a very popular and very good happy hour with lots of things to choose from. The agedashi tofu is excellent and the rolls are tasty. The bacon-wrapped tomato skewers are good too and they are like $2 or something like that. They have jalapeño-infused saki for $2 during happy hour as well. I came for lunch and ordered the Tofu Teppanyaki. The menu said it came with steamed rice, sauteed vegetables, and tofu. It was correct on only 1 out of the 3; the steamed rice. The rest of the food was completely inedible. The tofu was really more like a white jello, barely cooked, completely bland and tasteless. To say it comes with vegetables is even less accurate. The tofu was covered by carrots and peas that clearly came out of a can and also get served at the cafeteria of the local elementary school. I think they wanted to create such a spectacle of steam when serving it on the hot iron plate (picture fajitas at a mexican restaurant), that the food was drowning in a liquid mixture that was neither appetizing or visually appealing. The steamed rice was ok though. I've eaten here once before and the sushi was fine, not great but not bad. With that being said, I can't endorse a restaurant that would put the meal I had today on a plate and think it was good enough to serve. read more

Great food, great staff, and great atmosphere! We arrived as a partial party and didn't meet their minimum number of people required to be seated. The hostess was amazing and held our table a little longer than they normally would since our friends were on the way in an Uber (use RideAustin instead) and wouldn't need to find parking. Once our friends finally arrived, we were seated and our waiter did an amazing job of managing all of our needs. I felt unwelcome the second I walked into this establishment. They said that the kitchen was closing in two minutes. This leaves the patron in a situation where they feel as if they are bothering the staff to serve them. The proper approach would have been to fully welcome the guest and NOT rush the or simply say that their kitchen has closed. There is an older man in a hat who has a lady friend outside at a table and he keeps walking back and forth from inside to outside and refuses to wear a mask inside. GREAT place to "pregame" for awesome food and drinks before a night out. I've only been here during the reverse happy hour (after 10PM), but it's so worth it. Only downside is that service is slow and it's hard to track down a server because they all walk so fast without making eye contact with anyone.. kind of annoying, but after you've been here once you'll learn to immediately place a first order to get the ball rolling. Sushi is pretty solid, no complaints. My favorite starters include the tofu and seafood salad. The sake bombs are fun especially if you're with a group of friends. As someone who isn't even a fan of beer, I was pleasantly surprised! Such a great deal, and once you get the first round you can keep the plastic cups they serve it in (it has a mini shot cup attached inside for the sake and the beer is poured around it), and then just order hot sake and a few beers separately. The atmosphere is excessively modern and datey, with booming base music, water-fountain walls and an ever-changing colorful constellation of sexy LEDs embedded into the runways between the tables. Some roll recommendations: The Austin roll, shrimp crunch, spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and the yellow tail with scallions are all solid happy hour choices. The salmon, tuna and yellow tail sushi pieces are melt in your mouth good too. BarChi is great! Good food, quick service, and an awesome Happy Hour! I usually go during the daytime and have an absolutely great experience. My one gripe is trying to go at night. The place is much more packed at night, understandably, but I don't feel that's an excuse for the staff's mood to be so drastically different from how they are during the afternoon. I definitely still come during regular Happy Hour times. There are less people, which means faster food and less noise. I'd be hard pressed to try and fight the night time crowd. Overall, I recommend this place for anyone who wants to try great sushi, but isn't trying to pay upwards on $20 for one roll. The Green Dragon is my absolute favorite! The pepper tuna that topped the roll was phenomenal, however the spicy fish inside was a little too powerful and the flavors were all over the place.
