WOW! Such an incredible place. First time coming to HI, and we were celebrating my boyfriends birthday. We came across this place through yelp, and called to make reservations for the next day. We absolutely all loved this place. Everyone was super friendly and attentive, the food was so tasty (which ill get to), and the location was perfect. Ok, so let me tell you about the food. We LOVED having the pre-fix menu!!! SO worth it! I chose the lobster bisque, The ribeye steak with greens and potatoes, and the creme brûlée!!! I would rate this place 1000/10 !! I have nothing negative to say. I will be returning to this place!! Also side note my sister had ordered the paella instead of the steak which was also amazing I wish I could have had both. Charcoal Buttermilk Pancakes with Guava-Strawberry Sauce - the pancakes were pretty to look at with the dark charcoal color of the pancakes contrasting the pink sauce. The charcoal of course had no taste. The texture of the pancakes were pretty fluffy and the guava-strawberry sauce was really delicious. Prime Rib Hash - all the favors came together really well. It's a bit heavy though so you'll certainly be filled up. Overall, a nice breakfast place with some unique dishes. read more

My review is only based upon breakfast and happy hour. I have not been here for dinner. Online reservations are supremely easy to get! Happy hour is only first come, first serve. Indoor, outdoor, and bar seating available. I prefer outdoors, however it does have music and noise from the adjacent parking garage. I'm always hesitant of food places in Waikiki as they're typically overpriced and/or not that good... but I've had great experiences here! Came a handful of times for both breakfast and happy hour. Menu is available online. They also post specials on their Instagram. Our servers have been amazing. I always choose to come back for their Baja Fish Tacos ($5 during happy hour!) At first glance, I thought they were small... but they're a great size and surprisingly better than most taco shops I've been too lol. My bf and I always have to stop ourselves from just ordering these!! Their charcoal pancakes are also to die for. I wasn't excited for these but their house-made syrup is delicious. Pancakes aren't too sweet and they def stand out compared to other breakfast spots. They're in my top 3 for sweet breakfasts, Their veggie omelette was my fav. Not too oily or cheesy compared to other veggie omelettes so I'm a huge fan. My bf loved the pork belly fried rice. Also, their special curry croquettes is amazing!! I wish this was on their regular menu. I was excited for the baos as I LOVE them... but these weren't impressive at all. I love basalt and am so happy my husband found this restaurant tucked into what looked like a mixture of a mini convenience store and food court off of kuhio ave. This is a restaurant that has won many local awards. The menu is simple, but everything they offer is fantastic. My husband had the appetizer wings that had some sort of garlic, ginger dipping sauce and raved about it the whole day! He even interrogated the waiter trying to get all the ingredients so we could recreate it at home. I had the loco moco and was pleasantly surprised with the taste. The gravy was rich, the fried rice under the meat was I believe bacon or pork belly and that was tasty too. Prices are reasonable and for a late weekday lunch, there was no wait time. I also highly recommend the fries. The togarashi fries have a nice spicy kick from the togarashi powder. The beef fries are excellent "fully loaded" fries with tons of stuff on it. I've also been here for dinner. Its also good but quite pricy. If you get the Yelp check-in deal for 15% off you'll have a much better value experience for dinner. We were staying at Ko Olina and wanted to have a nice seafood dinner so we drove to Basalt. This place is a little confusing to find and easy to miss when you are driving. The restaurant screams high-end and sits inside a nice, trendy market. The crowd are dressed casual. The service was phenomenal and every staff is there to please. The food was amazing and we enjoyed everything we ordered. The presentation was superb! One star off from my review - They should change the Yelp dollar sign from a 2 to 3 (4 even). This is by no means, a 2 dollar sign restaurant. Everything was very expensive and it's quite deceiving when you see the 2 dollar sign on Yelp and see the prices on the menu. Probably my favorite happy hour in Waikiki. The drink options are actually happy hour priced and fully poured. Such a great selection! The place is cute and not too busy. I tried their hard cider (I think it was mango/passionfruit flavored from Hawaii!) and it was so delicious! I tried some of a friend's beer and it converted me into a beer person. Docked a star for rude service - our waitress was pretty apathetic. I'm not usually one to comment on less than ideal service, but it almost felt like she went out of her way to be cold to us. NOTE: Since August 1, their happy hour(s) were modified to 300-500pm (versus the original hours of 300-600pm). Basalt is located toward the rear of Duke's Lane along Kuhio Ave in the heart of Waikiki. Seating is comprised of the bar, indoor, and outdoor. PARKING: Not sure where the true parking lot/area for Basalt is located. We parked at the nearby International Marketplace since we were planning on visiting a business there post happy hour. HAPPY HOUR: During our July visit, their happy hour was till 6pm, and thankfully the bar area was not crowded at all when we arrived shortly after 4pm. Their drink specials include craft cocktails, beer, and wine. Our group of three chose beer to start with initially. As for food, we shared the fries (of course!), individual portions of the duck empanadas, the baja fish tacos, and the ahi poke. Portion size was definitely worth the price point. All the food was simply delicious. Truly it was. Aside from the fries, my favorite was the duck empanadas. Thank goodness we all decided to order our own portions, as I would have found it difficult to share this with my dining companions. The sauce complemented this dish well. SERVICE: Friendly and very satisfactory. The bartender duo at the bar that afternoon/evening worked well together as a team to ensure all customers were helped in a timely manner. side NOTE: Ask the bartender/server for the code for the restroom, located outside of the building. Went during restaurant week. It's inside dukes lane market place. Parking: The best parking is at Hyatt Centric. Free parking with validation for 2 hours. Ambiance: There's indoor and outdoor seating. Casual. Live music outside. Food: The Complimentary charcoal bread was very good. The rib eye steak was cooked perfectly. The crab risotto was ok. The lobster bisque tasted more like a crab than a lobster. I wish macadamia nut tart was more crushed. But it went well with the chocolate mousse cake. Service: It was very slow for us because I think we had a new waiter. I think he was a little nervous and he kept on trying to take our food away. While strolling down Waikiki one morning, we decided to stop here for breakfast. We would have never known this restaurant was hiding in the back of what seemed to be just a little shopping area. We tried the Avocado Toast, French Toast, Loco Moco, and Eggs Benedict. Every single thing that we had was delicious, and I would definitely order them again. The French toast was absolutely amazing, it was nice and crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside! The service was good, and the food didn't take too long. I have to say, I was really looking forward to this restaurant. And while the food and drinks were good, I think Bardot is not as elevated as it's price and menu suggest. I ordered a bunch of dishes from the menu. I was looking forward to this and the reviews looked so good! So we made an effort to order a large amount of food and shared it amongst the table. Appetizers (shared with the table): adobo chicken, Brussels sprouts Prix fixe: lobster bisque, seafood paella, basque cheesecake Drinks: lilikoi punch Of this the stand outs were the Brussels sprouts, lobster bisque, and lilikoi punch (definitely a strong drink!! LOL). All the other ones, however, fell into a "meh" category. They weren't as memorable or as exciting as they seemed. The paella was most disappointing as it lacked crunch and depth of flavor. The seafood serving was generous and appreciated; however the flavor and complexity of Paella just wasn't there. While I'm not leaving this review to say the food was bad. On the contrary, it was quite delicious. However at $67 the prix fixe was overpriced, as the quality didn't match its price. $67 should get you deep flavors, a good dining experience, and excellent service. I will say that Basalt was one of our favorite breakfast spots during our Hawaiian trip. Plus, the restaurant even serves breakfast cocktails first thing in the morning. If you are staving, and want something besides loco moco, then the pork belly fried rice is your friend. I was so hungry that I did not have time to take a photo, but it was amazing. The atmosphere of Basalt was pretty chill and relaxing . . . then again, we had breakfast around 7 am. Our waitress from NYC, Sharon (or Shannon), is really good people. She was quite friendly and seems to have a great rapport with customers and her coworkers. The breakfast prices are quite reasonable, especially compared to the prices of some of the nearby hotel restaurants. We learned this as we were walking out of the restaurant, but it seems that everyone loves the charcoal pancakes. Almost every table, except for ours, ordered the charcoal pancakes. It was a random date night for us and had decided to check out this place. This was a surprisingly great place that I've passed over for years since they opened because I felt there were to many tourist flocking there, but I was wrong and have been missing out on some great food. At first, it seems like a very odd location. The setup of where the location of the restaurant gives the appearance of a food court sort of place, but Basalt is nestled in the back with their own seating area and even have an outdoor seating option. Upon entry, it does seem very busy amongst the other food options and small convivence store. However, once in back in the Basalt restaurant area, the feeling is far more calmer and relaxed from the hustle and bustle in front. The menu isn't vast, but there are a variety of options. We went with the Prix Fixe dinner and were very happy with this option for both the food and value. We started with the lobster bisque was very tasty with a gentle little kick to it and tiny bits of lobster to be found in it. For my second, I went with the Seafood Paella that had half a slipper lobster tail, shrimp, scallop and fish all bedded over perfectly seasoned Paella rice base. My spouse chose the New York Steak which was an impressively large cut and grilled perfectly. We both closed with the Grand Marnier Mousse Cake which I found the mousse to be over the top and greatly satisficing for my sweet tooth. There staff are all very friendly and proficient with their service. The place was clean and well spaced making for a comfortable dinning experience. The dinning room give the appearance that it might be noisy, but it wasn't at all and we were able to talk comfortably throughout our meal. Defiantly will be back! read more

Two words: Customer Service! Besides the always delicious food here, I was completely blown away by the service I received here. Basalt is located in Duke's Lane right next to International Market Place. The parking is actually located in the Hyatt Centric and they validate for 3-4 hours!! I was there with my friends for well over 3 hours and it was still free!! MAJOR win when trying to find cheap parking in Waikiki. This was my 3rd time coming to Basalt & every time was exceptional! The first time I came here was for Restaurant Week 2 years ago. The food was amazing and I knew I needed to come back! The next time I came here was actually for a Yelp Elite Event. This is when I found out that the whole Duke's Lane is owned by ABC Stores! Every employee work for ABC! That's sooo cool! My most recent experience was a couple weeks ago when I went with 6 of my friends. At first I thought, oh it was Yelp event so of course the service was exceptional. But, NOPE I was WRONG! Both the food & the service was AMAZING!!! Here's a play by play of what happened throughout the night. My friends had ordered sake and loved it so much, they decided to order another bottle, and then another. The first 2 bottles were brought out but on the 3rd round, we were told they had run out and to compensate they gave us FREE bottle of a different sake! WOW! Next, we ordered 2 orders of Duck Empanadas to share. It was taking a while to come out and our waiter told us, the kitchen accidentally burnt our empanadas, and to compensate they were giving us all shots of Lobster Bisque. Again, WOW! Shortly after, our empanadas came out piping hot. Next, FOOOOD! First off, their Charcoal Pandesal is ADDICTIVE!! Soo soft and airy with just the right amount of sweetness! I didn't even need butter to eat them! We ate 2-3 each it was sooo good! Next up, our entrees arrived and WOW, presentation on point! This place is definitely high end presentation for a VERY reasonable price tag. I ordered the Mac Nut Crusted Catch of the Day which happened to be Opah. It was sooo flavorful with the perfect crunch on the outside from the mac nuts and panko breading. The white sauce was amazing and not too overpowering as it's just drizzled on the plate instead of on top of the fish. My friends ordered the Lamb Chops, the Ribeye, and the Charcoal Seafood Pasta. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their entrees and loved that their food was cooked to how they wanted (medium rare!) That's not easy to do and most places mess it up. We were all VERY impressed! As mentioned before, the food is reasonably priced at around $25-$40 which isn't bad at all for the experience, service, and food you get! BONUS: Yelp check-in offer is 15% off (not including alcohol), for up to 4 people! I can't wait to come back to try their infamous Charcoal Pancakes! The hosts told us to have a seat on the side, but let other parties that showed up after us be seated first because we didn't stay standing there as a small line started to form. ----- Pork Belly Buns: charcoal bao buns, pickled vegetables, hoisin sriracha sauce ($11). I was expecting the buns to mostly just look pretty, but they were surprisingly decent. The bread was soft and fluffy, filling had a good level of heat, and the pork belly was tender. I chose this restaurant based on the excellent reviews online. I made a reservation online two days prior. We came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Everyone wore masks but they didn't check our vaccination cards even though we were to be seated inside (not sure if there is some central system that the restaurants share because we had our cards checked the day prior at another restaurant). Tables were spaced apart. We started by the complimentary charcoal bread- very good, a bit sweet, and nicely hot. I ordered the miso cod and my husband had the lobster bisque (very flavorful) and the catch of the day which was mahi mahi. My dish- miso cod, was absolutely delicious: served on sautéed bok choy and mushrooms, topped with some greens and sprouts. The miso sauce was divine and it was served with rice. My husband's dish- catch of the day- mahi mahi, was crusted with macadamia nuts and came with mashed potatoes. My husband, who is not an easy person to please when it comes to his food, loved his dish and commented on the delicious flavors. They gave us a complimentary guava cake for our anniversary, we also ordered the coconut cake, and the tiramisu. Hats off to Chef Keith and the staff. This review is looooooong over due. My family and I decided to throw my dad a surprise 70th birthday dinner party. I worked directly with Chef and he was just so amazing. Especially with the pandemic, we were able to work out a great and safe way to celebrate my dad. We had to ask our guests in advance what they wanted to eat so the kitchen can prepare. Day of the party, when the food was served to everyone...it was hot. It wasn't like how you go to other restaurants and have a big party size and your food comes out cold and not fresh. Food was amazing, the vibe was amazing, staff all amazing! Thank you Basalt! I found the closest place I could so that my sister did not turn into a dragon [she had strep throat we found out later which is why she was breathing fire]. We were seated almost immediately, however our drinks took longer than expected to reach our table. Not sure if they were short staffed or not but it seemed like most of the people were sitting outside. We were seated behind a door and rather hidden. Ok this place is delightful! I've been wanting to try it for a while now and finally had opportunity to go with friends in town. My guy and I ordered a salad to split and a ribeye to split. I asked for it medium well and I thought he might destroy me. Luckily for me, it was delicious, tender and so juicy!! The salad was small, but pretty and also delish. Had an outdoor reservation last night. They have a great patio! Service was excellent and COVID protocol was on point. Great wine and cocktail list. It was really hard to decide what to drink because everything was so amazing. Hubs had lobster bisque and fresh catch which he raved about. I had the mixed greens and shrimp risotto. The salad dressing was super tasty. Risotto was very flavorful. I'm gluten free pescatarian so options were pretty limited for me, which is something I'm used to. Would love to see the kitchen have a bit more flexibility in doing some one offs like grilling or sautéing a piece of fresh catch so it can be offered gf. Things are hard with covid, so I get it that they might not be able to accommodate. Also of note - passion fruit crème brûlée was excellent. read more

Most of our party ordered the fix prix menu and I throughly enjoyed all entrees - salad, rib eye and chocolate mouse cake. I paired it with a cab (Roma) and it was perfect! Also surprised with the charcoal pandesal bread but it was also quite delicious. Service was attentive, friendly and quick. We were a pretty large party but everything went off without a hitch. We came here for breakfast on a weekday around 9:30AM, I had a reservation but you definitely did not need one, there were several open tables. I got their charcoal buttermilk pancakes that was topped with their guava-strawberry sauce, whipped cream and mixed fresh berries. I was actually impressed with how soft and warm the pancakes were and how the sauce complimented it, without needed extra syrups. This restaurant is located in a food court. We went for breakfast and there was no line, which was nice. The service we got wasn't so great. The hostess seemed like she hated her job. Our servers attention went to the customers outside, we sat inside. We had ordered coffee and it would of been nice if we could of gotten a second cup of refill. But our server never came around. We ordered the charcoal pancakes, and it tasted like regular pancakes. The presentation was so pretty, and I had enjoyed the fruits that are on it. Would I go back? Maybe try for dinner next time. After gorging ourselves with endless amounts of poke and Hawaiian cuisine for a couple of days straight, my wife and I decided to change it up and treat ourselves with some American New. Basalt was close by and had great reviews, so we decided to give it a shot. While the service was great, the food and ambiance missed the mark a bit and ended up being pricey for the experience as a whole. Let's start with the food. You can tell that they source some really good ingredients and the presentation looked great, but the execution left some of the elements on our dishes extremely dry. Our prime rib was cooked well, but the brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes were extremely dry. The Seafood Paella was also seasoned well, but the lobster and fish were definitely overcooked. We had really great fish dishes down the street the night before, so the missteps on the seafood were quite noticeable. For the ambiance, we agreed to sit outside thinking that it'd be a nice patio. They have a decorated area, but it's in an alleyway next to a super busy parking garage so it was extremely noisy and distracting. 2 dishes + drinks and it was over $100..which I think would be pretty fair if some of the ingredients weren't so dry or overcooked. We started with the blueberry bourbon drinks and beef steak appetizer, charcoal bread and butter and instantly knew our entrees would be amazing. For our entree we had the pork chop and szechaun fried chicken and adobo fried rice. The entrees don't come with a carb. The chicken came with garlic chili pickled green beans and pork chop with the best Brussels sprouts I've ever had on island. We accompanied the meal with the altruistic hand and extra dirty martini. Both were made perfectly! Our server Paige provided 5 customer service. Sitting outside in most places it feels like you're forgotten but we didn't here. Unfortunately our visit was not a 4* or 5* Since 8/1/19: Happy Hour: 3-5pm (ends 1 hour earlier). Happy hour is honored only in the bar area. Visited for happy hour to try out Basalt before going "all in" for dinner. Service: 2.5* Waiter was slow & scattered tho friendly. Examples: Brought water but no utensils. Brought "to go" containers & not the check. Took the parking ticket to validate & didn't bring the check when he returned. Parking: 1* A week prior, I asked the hostess if they validated for parking & the length of time covered by the validation. She told me it would cover the entire time we were at Basalt. That was wrong! The parking validation covers only 1 hour of free parking. Due to the slow, scattered service, our visit lasted about 80 minutes - the 20 minutes over 1 hour cost $5. Luckily we had somewhere to be & didn't linger. The $5 was not a big deal, although I cannot see enjoying a proper dinner in less than 45 minutes (allowing 15 minutes of transit from & to the parking spot). The validated parking rates at International Market Place are better: 1st hour is free & 2nd, 3rd & 4th hours are $2 each. Ambiance: Food court. I get the marketplace concept. Generally for similar dinner prices, I'd prefer a nicer setting. Food: 2* Charcuterie Platter $9: Duck liver pâté, salumi & cured meat was small & boring/weak flavored. The duck liver pâté was only a dollop & lacked a liver flavor. The prosciutto was nothing special/grocery store level. Salumi was meh. It was my primary reason for visiting & quite a disappointment. 3* Teri Burger $6: 4oz wagyu beef patty, teriyaki sauce & swiss cheese was cute & my friend liked it. The bun looked like brioche. 4* Yes, No Meat Flatbread Pizza $7: Grilled eggplant, squash, wild mushroom, kale & tomato sauce was the star! Glad I ordered it as an afterthought. The grilled veggies were plentiful & tastier than many restaurant's side dishes. The crust was soggy but I didn't care because the veggies were great.
