I've probably dined at Basil 3 or 4 times and every time I've been pleased with my meals. LOVE the bubble drinks. Lechee and honey dew are my favorites. The noodle soups are never-ending, I enjoyed the Tom Yum although the flavor of the "Vietnamese beef soup" was not my taste. The Dim Sum and Drunken noodles are amazing, as well as all of the appetizers. Staff is wonderful, always smiling and friendly. Food is served promptly and never cold, actually almost TOO hot but that's not a complaint. I definitely recommend dining here. read more

I'd give it 3.5 stars. It's not excellent, but has nice tasting food at a good price. Make sure to get the scallion pancake as an appetizer. Other good dishes include beef with broccoli, garlic eggplant, and the General Tso's chicken is decent. I'm not a fan of the salty fish with fried rice but I think this is more about it being an acquired taste rather than it not being good quality. read more

Everything I got was really mediocre, edible but not enjoyable. Maybe I ordered the wrong stuff? My bubble tea had little flavor and the bubbles were kind of hard instead of squishy. The crispy noodles were ok, but I asked for vegetables on top which ended up being a million mushrooms, a few carrot slices, and like 3 bites of broccoli. I think it's really interesting, avant-garde even, how the appetizer never fails to come after everything else, especially given that they don't seem to be doing this on purpose. At least their boba slushies come out right after you order them, as if to make up for the difference. In any case, I really do like Basil--it's much more consistent than Great Wall in terms of quality, that quality being slightly above average. It's also very cheap for the variety of foodstuffs it offers (though sometimes I go and they don't offer certain veggies, wah) and all their dishes are quite authentic and happily non-Americanized/westernized. read more

Summary: A fantastic, well-priced fusion restaurant with excellent Cantonese-style Chinese food and friendly service. Pros: -Authentic, fairly priced, Cantonese Chinese food. -Friendly service. -Takes credit and cash. Cons: -Slightly smaller portion sizes relative to Manhattan Chinatown standards on some of the dishes. Long version: My family ate dinner here, mostly from the Chinese side of the menu, with the exception of a roti canai, Satay chicken, and a Massaman curry, all of which were very good. As for the Chinese food, we ordered the following dishes, all of which were authentic Cantonese-style: wonton noodle soup, roast duck over rice, salt and pepper fried pork chops, the fish fillet with black pepper sauce over rice, and the chicken crispy noodles. We were especially surprised with how well the roast duck turned out: the portion size was admittedly smaller relative to Manhattan standards, but it tasted just as good. Basil also offers a variety of noodle options for their noodle soups: we had the Cantonese noodles and the flat rice noodles, both of which met our expectations very well. Some of the portions were perhaps slightly smaller than what would be served in Manhattan's Chinatown, but it was still enough to fill us up after a long day of walking. The waitress on duty was extremely friendly and helpful, and she also spoke Cantonese very well, despite her humble claims otherwise =) Fusion restaurants sometimes have a bad reputation for not doing anything particularly well, but Basil offers a very solid Cantonese menu. read more

This is by far me and my girlfriends favorite restaurant in New Haven. We always try to come at least once a month, if not more. We always get the spring rolls, Vegetable Lo Mein, and Chicken Fried Rice. More than enough food and our absolute favorites. Staff is also very nice and the atmosphere is always great. read more

The massaman curry is simply amazing! Probably the best I have eaten all over the u.s. Has a very rich flavor with tons of vegetable etc. I frequent this place now. Service has also been excellent. I suppose many of the good reviews are from college kids. There is nothing that really stands out here. Food was okay, not bad but not great either. Their sodas must be stored improperly. While they are not passed the expiration date, they all have some odd taste to them. Anyhow, not much to say. Service is good, but food is average at best, and you're best bringing your own drink. People seem to give any place 4 Stars or more when those should be reserved for places that really stand out. read more

I would of given 5 stars if the service could of been better. When they take your order it is very demanding, and when you need something no one is to be found. We stayed at the courtyard marriott around the corner and didnt feel like walking too far, so we stoped by for a quick dinner. Got great quality for the money we spent. Their menugives you many choices and they seem to make everything on there fresh. We had some noodles that were recommended to us and chicken teriyaki. They also steamed some vegetables for our baby. I used to think this was an okay place to eat. The food is okay-- I've had more authentic and cheaper, but it's decent for average, americanized Chinese food. However, tonight when I went with my friend, I found a strand of black hair wrapped around the meat and veggies in my dish. When I pointed it out to the hostess, she became extremely defensive and denied that it could possibly be from any worker in the restaurant, and that it was from me (I have dark brown hair). Then she went on to say that it was too thin to be her own, and that her hair was so thick that she had to gel it, and on and on... She made my friend and me extremely uncomfortable and would not let the topic be. We were yelled at for a good 5 minutes straight before she walked away. Oh yeah, and they took forever to give us our pork buns. In fact, they came after we asked for the check. In summary, average place with average food and slow service, with waitstaff and cooks who do not wear hair nets. And if you point out there's hair in your food, they blame it on you. The curry was amazing, but the pad Thai was terrible. It was overly sweet and lacked flavor, and the beef was way too starchy.

I never ever write bad reviews for restaurants being an restaurant owner in the past, but I need to say something. The staff was not ready for the crowd to come in. Ordered the food at 5:51pm and got the food at 7:43pm. I understand if the food takes long to cook and prepare. The problem was that the food was sitting on the counter. Many people who ordered before took their food. Food was cold and noodles all stuck together. Food is good, but not when you get the wrong order for your takeout. Please please please be prepared and be a little more organized. Average takeout should take 10-15min, maximum 30-40min on a busy day like today. An order for Pho ("Vietnamese style beef soup") and a taro bubble tea was placed without hassle via telephone. Parking at Basil being nonexistent, my car was left in a rather seedy area of New Haven, no surprises there, really. A short walk around the corner and up the stairs leads our hero to his destination, greeted by several smiles and hellos. The woman at the counter peered deeply into my soul before I could even open my mouth; she knew exactly why I had come. My bubble tea was taken out of the fridge and handed to me (First one ever, actually. Everyone: You were right. Fantastic.) and my order appeared before my eyes. Credit card accepted, I continued back to my car, confronted only once by a conspicuous fellow with an itchy neck who may or may not have been under the influence of bath salts but definitely did want spare change and did not eat my face. The food was bangin and I cannot wait until I have my next reason (hangover?) to get Pho, or just to hang out with friends and eat quality food served by an enlightened staff in a harmonious location. Basil is probably THE best Chinese food restaurant at its price range in New Haven. Their beef noodle soup is always generous, with actual chunks of meet as opposed to tiny little slivers at Dee Dee's Kitchen downtown. The place is very clean and neat, with a staff that is incredibly friendly and warm (kind of like the aunties in Joy Luck Club), unlike every other Chinese restaurant in town. Honestly though, you cannot go wrong with any of the item on their menu. The roti canai was excellent. It was all down hill from there. Roasted duck with brown rice was terrible. My date's a yellow curry vegetarian was nothing special.
