God awful. I went to this place expecting to have a nice meal with my girlfriend and my family. I put my order in at 7:00pm. At 7:50 the waitress promised that my food would be out shortly. At 8;10, still starving and without food, we asked the waitress where the food was and she said it would be "out shortly." At 8:25 we got fed up and left and put adequate money on the table. At that point, the owner came out to *argue* with us about leaving. I wouldn't have left if they had been honest with us or offered us some drinks but they instead repeatedly lied to us about when our food would come out. Excuse after excuse doesn't justify an 80+ minute wait for a main course. I would advise anyone looking to be fed in the same century that they entered steer far clear of this establishment. The restaurant may be 95 years old, but it might be 95 more before you're actually fed. BONUS: I ordered hot tea, and they brought over hot water with some sugar. I had to remind them that tea is supposed to be served with some sort of tea. read more

You will be treated to a true, southern Italian meal (accompanied by excellent service and two fantastic brothers who are the owners!) They make their own pasta and in the summertime they use vegetables (organic) from their own garden! Try the tomato and cucumber salad! and the linguine with shrimp, arugula, fresh tomatoes - add some red hot pepper "fra diavolo" style!. This the LAST true family friendly Italian (REAL Italian, not "Olive Garden" or "Pasta with gooseberries and sliced shitake mushroom topped with a sweet red apple relish") I would highly recommend it for lunch or dinner - and it is in a 180 year old former carriage house! read more

My cousin recommended this place. At first I was a little reluctant because it was so close to his house I thought he was being lazy to go somewhere else but I was wrong. Everything we ate was delicious. The calamari was soft and not chewy the marinara was fresh and delicious. The baked clams were gone in a matter of seconds how good they were. I would really suggest to try zuppa di pesca which was very very tasty. The service was on point. The interior is clean, quiet and nice looking. This is my favorite Italian restaurant. My family has been going here for god, I think 10 years now. My mom was friends with john, the original owner, and since his sons took over, the food has changed a bit, but they definitely stay true to john's recipes - which are just stupidly delicious, you won't even believe. There's a nice little outdoor patio now which is a relatively new addition - the place lends itself well to sipping wine outside, so that was a great call. The only complaint I have is that the bread could be better. It tastes like the Italian bread I get at my local bodega - it's fine, it's served warm, but it's not that crazy good bread you can get easily on Staten Island. If they stepped the bread up to a nice twist or something, I think that would make a big difference - I mean, bread is critical in an Italian meal. I got mussels and the juice was unbelievable, and I was just wishing I had better bread to soak it up. Also slightly disappointing - they got rid of tortoni and tartufo as dessert items. Their dessert still looked great, just was used to my tortoni. Chicken basilio is still bangin. I'm considering having my wedding here - that's how good this food is. Long live basilios! Oh - and - you have to order the beet & goat cheese salad. It's the best salad I've ever had. read more

It's hard to choose a best part. The old inn feel is nice in a quiet neighborhood lays the foundation. The bread is light and crispy. The had mozzarella in carrazio (fried) which was well made so the oil didn't overpower the taste. The veal is basically a must, although the fish soup is not a bad runner up. After being stuck in traffic for 2 hours we needed something ASAP! Right off the bridge and we headed to this place. Had not been here in a few years and was pleasantly surprised. It was after 8 and wasn't sure what to expect. The staff was attentive, very pleasant and helpful when we asked about menu choices. Food arrived promptly. The homemade spinach and cheese ravioli were light and tasty. My husband had the fettuccine with a light cream sauce. That was also flavorful. House Cabernet was a good choice. My boyfriend and I have both lived on the north shore of Staten Island our whole lives and have passed this block thousands of times. Basilio's is tucked away at the end of the block resembling an old house. We recently discovered it and each experience has been amazing. As soon as you walk in the ambience is quaint and casual. The feelings of "regulars" and neighborhood friendly dining. Most importantly the menu, the ingredients , the taste and service are all authentic. They grow their own produce, which is why you will not find them open in the cold months of January and February as the entire restaurant closes. If their ingredients cannot be fresh then I guess they will not serve haha we literally saw the big metal bowl of freshly picked plump tomatoes on the bar counter ready to be cooked up! My boyfriend and I both times have split the gnocchi with tomato sauce dish for an appetizer, because we cannot resist home made pasta! Gnocchi typically filling, is nothing shot of delicious leaving you wanting more. It's so tastey and simple.. The freshness of the basil and tomatoes are evident !! I also recommend the salmon with lemon caper sauce and the pork osso bucco special. The meat falls off the bone anime was great. We can't wait to go back and sit in the garden ! read more

My cousin had their wedding reception here. It was a nice and cozy place with decent food (nothing over the top delicious). However, the servers were not very warm or friendly. I couldn't really figure out why. I would say maybe because they were busy but we were only about a party of 60 people or less. I would say server to person ratio was about 5:1? Not sure but servers were everywhere let's just say. I had to ask for a cup of water at least 3 times before anything was brought out to me. No one apologized. Not one server had a smile on their face. It was very weird. Like they weren't really happy to serve us. I mean you're at a wedding reception. It's supposed to be a happy occasion! Least they could have done was put on a smile. I'm posting this not to scold Basilio but hoping someone there will read it and maybe improve on their service. Because other than the lack of friendliness, it seemed like a quaint little budget friendly place to have a wedding reception. Other people give pretty good reviews here so if this was one of those isolated incidents that doesn't happen often here, then I would have to question if there was some discrimination going on here. But that could be the only other thing that comes to my mind. We certainly weren't rude or a loud bunch. read more

Man! Did I come to Basilio on a bad night, or something? Ordered a bowl of pasta fagoile, that was as full of flavor as a boiled marble. I had to pound away with the salt shaker and cheese to convince myself I didn't spend $7.50 for a serving of hot dog water, and I'm a guy who NEVER uses salt! Then the gnocchis were absolutely inedible. Rather than individual potato dumplings, it looks like they made a long roll of potato like licorice whip, and cut it into half-inch sections. Tasted NOTHING like any gnocchi I've ever had, and not in a good way, either. I went into Basilio starving, and could only finish half my plate, it was that bad. My friend had a pasta dish that was likewise dreadful, and his mother had one that she rather liked, but that's two-out-of-three meals that were a huge disappointment at a single table, and that's something that should never happen. I ate here in the 1980s and 90s, and always had a good meal, but tonight....? Did like the old world decor (or lack thereof?), but I haven't been this been this disgusted with an Italian meal, since I ate a Pasquale's Pizza, in Gatlinburg, Tenn, circa 1975. My guess: Since a lot of restaurants on the Island are going through some tough times, could they have reheated last nights (or last weeks?) leftovers? Nothing else makes sense. read more

The waitstaff was great. We were late (like by an hour late...) to the graduation party and they held our food and everything. They were super nice and really wonderful at all times. Now the food... Its not my type of Italian food. I will always love Moms and Grandmas cooking. But this was tasty. I love this place. Basilio's has been open for a good portion of 100 years, tucked away to an almost forgotten time era, which is reawakened when you eat here. You could imagine a booming South Beach, where Basilio's would dorm people for the night upstairs while the restaurant and bar downstairs never closed. The food is pretty darn good, and I don't think much has been done to change the menu - Thank Goodness! I'm sure most people wouldn't even know its there anymore...
