    Regular Beef Brisket

I came here on a recommendation from two co workers. I came on a Thankful Thursday. They have a sale of ribs special for a great price of $16. They are locally owned and I love supporting local businesses. The restaurant is really nice inside. I placed my order online and it was ready when I arrived. I took the order to go. Lots of food. Also ordered the brisket sandwich and baked beans. It was good.

We haven't been to Bate's for awhile but we stopped in after a full day out to get some BBQ. We ordered a full slab of ribs, a side of slaw and a side of potato salad, pickles and one of their $2 long neck beers. The young lady that served us at the walk up and order counter was friendly and helpful when asking some questions about the potato salad and slaw. The ribs were mostly tender and fall of the bone (how I like my ribs) there were a few pieces that were dry though. The slaw and potato salad were good and the beer special (you can't leave the premises with the beer). It wasn't very busy and we easily found a table and it is a clean restaurant. They have a good amount of carry out orders though.

Excellent KC bbq at its best. But, even better on a Thursday or Sunday as the full Rack of bbq baby back pork ribs are only $16. - see attached photo as I almost fainted from the portion size once served! Eventually, I boxed up some for lunch the next day. Only needed to added a quart of fine cole slaw to complement the sweet and tangy ribs/sauce. Was able to wash everything down perfectly with $2 (yes, $2 all day and everyday), 12oz Miller beers. My only regret is not being able to try the baked beans. However, this will be my goal when/if I ever return to Kansas City. The normal bbq counter service was friendly and quick while the decor is an historic sports themed.

Bates was recommended to us by a local and it didn't disappoint. Walk in order of the board. They had a special going on Thursday night. Full slab for $16.00 what a deal. Ended up ordering Cole slaw as a side. The ribs were very tasty and fell off the bone. The sauce was sweet and tangy delicious. The slaw was very good more on the tangy side. I like it more creamy, but Cole Slaw is made so many ways. The staff were friendly and service was great. The atmosphere was great warm woods and sports decor everywhere. If you're looking for good bar-b-que this is your place.

    Dry meat

My attempt at finding half way decent smoked meats and/or bbq in th Kansas City area continues. Being from Texas and also living in North Carolina, finding something comparable is a struggle. As I've been told by may LC BBQ is different. Not only is it different it is lacking. This week o tried this place. I asked a lit their brisket and advised I don't want dried out brisket, I wa sh formed they trim all fat off the brisket, that equates to dry, flavorless leather meat. I passed and asked how the chopped pork was, I was told it was good so I tried they. I guess I should have asked if they pull the fat and flavor off it also, as they do. As you can see in the pictures, it's dry. I guess people who like dry now leather meat, flavorless meat will enjoy the place. Couldn't even get the smoke taste out of it. I will give them create for the container potatoe salad, a little bit of salt and it was pretty decent. Also, look at my receipt, charged for a medium drink buttons they only have small cups. Of your really hurting so much to chest people out of a drink just shit the place down. Ffs. Just another lansas city area dry flavorless meat experience.

    Ribs

This is our favorite BBQ place. I grew up Going to the OG Bates City BBQ and this is just what I would expect. They are always consistent. The ribs just fall off the bone and really can't be beat. The fresh fries and delicious and they don't skimp on servings.

FPO and I met up with some friends on an early Saturday for lunch and just to hang out. We picked Bates City Bar-B-Que. It's a nice, family owned place with a friendly feel to it. There's a private lot with a lot of convenient parking Part of their decor is license plates from around the country and their collection is very impressive. And of course, no self-respecting bbq restaurant in KC would be complete without Chiefs memorabilia on the wall. They have self serve fountain Pepsi products and a small selection of bottled beers (behind the counter, of course, lol). While the others had a variety of Bud Light, Heineken, and Coors Lite, I went wild and had a Pepsi. I don't remember the last time I drank soda and it was fabulous. There's just something about fountain sodas that can't be beat. FPO and I split the Mixed Plate ($21.00). It has ribs, two choices of meat, two sides, fries, white bread, and a pickle. We picked the brisket and burnt ends. I liked the ribs the best. The brisket is thin sliced, which is not my favorite, and the burnt ends we got were a little dry. Friends told us that's not usually the case. It's a nice enough place that I would go back and give the burnt ends another try. I still don't eat a lot of beef or pork, so it'll probably be at least a few months until we try again.

Classic looking BBQ shop. The menu is a bit hard to find when you walk up but they have a sign that points to it so doesn't take long. I went with the lunch special today which was a Rib meat sandwich in a Tommy Boy (big sized) and Onion rings. I was excited to see this since I don't see a lot of BBQ places that do rib meat sandwiches. The meat was juicy and had a good flavor. The three sauces all had good flavor. (Original, Hot and F'in Hot) Onion rights as a side was a large size and were nice and extra crispy. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Kansas City has some of the best barbecue in the world, and lots of famous places to get it. One of the best has to be Bate's City BBQ! I rarely order anything but a slab of ribs and fries, but the sandwiches and other sides are equally delicious. You can taste the pride in every bite here. These guys love what they do and it shows. Great service and a cool, quirky setting in a strip mall off of Quivera. The walls are lined with KC sports memorabilia in one wall and license plates and funny signs in the others. Great place and affordable food makes it one of the best BBQ joints in KC!

We shared a variety of dishes, including nachos, sandwiches, and a few Rashee plates. My personal favorites were the ribs, cornbread, and collard greens. The nachos were perfect for sharing and disappeared quickly. The kids loved the mac and cheese and cornbread, while the guys couldn't get enough of the burnt ends. In general, I think BBQ is often freshest during lunch hours, but we still had a fantastic reunion dinner. The manager even stopped by our table to check on us and shared a bit of the restaurant's history, which was a nice touch. Our family had a great evening and a memorable meal!

Still nothing and the waitress said the drink should be coming out. 25 minutes later I asked about the drink and the waitress confirmed the order was in. 5 min later and the hostess came with the drink. Food came out sooner after. There was musician there that night and we had gone thru 3 songs and his intermission before we got anything we ordered. Overall food was ok. Ribs are good and sticky. Burnt end pillows - you couldn't tell if it was just chopped beef. Not to write about the chicken sliders. Pretzel bites were like a cut up long piece with a toasted texture instead of a chewy inside. So we asked for the bill. Took 5 min to get that. We had some gift cards. Our waitress struggled with that and another waiter assigned. Overall it took another 20 min to pay the bill. The waitress came out with the bill onetime. I gave her my number for the rewards. Then, she was gone another 5 min and came back out with things for another table. I showed her the gift cards and she said she would come back. Another waiter came to take the cards and receipt. Another 5 min when she disappeared. The waitress came back with the bill with deducted gift cards and my credit card. But she didn't bring a pen. In short, they were slow in all aspects - initial order, drinks, food, and bill. What should have been a 45 minutes stay was more like 1 hr and 40 min. Food is decent but be ready for a long wait if your staff has more than 3 tables.

In honor of America's 250th birthday, I wanted to write the most July 4th review I could think of…read more What's more American than some amazing BBQ! My recent travels brought me to the Midwest, specifically Kansas City. I come from Texas, where we have arguably the best BBQ in the country. I'm not a homer though, I like to go to other parts of the country and try their versions with an open mind. All my research on KC BBQ lead me to Joe's, one of the most popular BBQ spots in the city. This place is very unique as it is a functioning gas station as well. I arrived in the middle of dinner time thinking lines would be shorter. I was wrong. The line was wrapped around the building and parking was a nightmare. I almost drove off but thought to myself, I may not be in KC again for a while, if ever. The line looked scary but moved at a steady pace. Once you're inside, there's still more line. It's counter service and you get your food almost immediately. Customer service was great. They kept the line moving and even had people in the dining room inside monitor tables and no saving seats was going on. I had plenty of time to look over the menu. They have options. Their call to fame is the Z-Man sandwich, but I wanted to try everything individually to properly rate and compare. They had a special called the Cowboy Special which came with ribs, sausage and and sliced brisket along with two sides. All that for a deal of 22.49. Those kind of prices are unheard of in Texas. You really get a lot of bang for your buck here. I knew this was going to be a big meal, but everyone in line said I had to get the banana pudding as well. I got my plate, and at first glance it looked nothing like what I'm used to. Kind of sad looking actually. Once I dug in, I was immediately humbled and proven wrong. All the meats were great. KC is known for ribs and they do these extremely well here. Everything was seasoned to perfection. The thinly sliced brisket was different, but tasted great. For my sides, I went with mac and cheese and dirty rice. Both were extremely good. As good as all the savory food was, the banana pudding almost stole the show! Best banana pudding I've ever had. It had little bits of toffee in it which made it different in the most wonderful way. The whole adventure was time consuming but no regrets were had. I would without a doubt come back here again if I'm in Kansas City again!

We made a detour on a road trip to try some KC BBQ and everything online said we had to come here…read more The line was out the door and I can see why. I got the burnt ends which were SO tender and flavorful. The mac and cheese wasn't half bad either, super cheesy and creamy. The food was served super quick too. If I'm ever back I KC, I'll definitely be coming back.

Brisket was unwrapped near our table and was dripping juices - spice rub and doneness was right on. The meat was so tender and flavorful that I didn't really need P&F's BBQ Sauce- which was also very good and a bit different from traditional KC style sauce. Pork Burnt ends aren't my favorite but these were tasty, very well spiced and were complimented well by the P&F sauce. While I thought the brisket was the star of the show, the smoked and fried chicken wings were a close second to the brisket and seemed very popular with the crowd at Discourse. When chicken is smoked well, it carries the smoky taste throughout tender and juicy meat and these were smoked well. Can't forget Discourse Brewing, I tried their Used 8 track Dortmunder Lager. I like German style lagers and pilsners and this choice well complimented P&Fs BBQ. Before finishing for the evening I had a Platinum Label "I'm a Dinosaur" Helles - it was light and not too hoppy. I'd have both again. Wednesday is Trivia Night at Discourse and while I didn't stay for it, the place was packed an hour before trivia started. All in all a great evening. I was hoping for something smokier and not so sweet. 3. There are nice chunks of meat in the beans. 4. They are missing something. Maybe some kick to go with the sweet and tang. Or maybe a bell pepper to add some complexity. Definitely need to cut down on whatever is making them taste so weirdly sweet. Let's get into the ribs. Let me say first that I prefer beef over pork. I didn't realize they were pork or packed in styrofoam until I got home. They were kinda cold. The ribs were tender and not overly sauced. There was not much fat. The sauce is sweet and rather thin.
