However, the truffle cream sauce added a nice touch that elevated the dish. We also tried the Italian salad, which was bursting with flavor! The combination of greens, prosciutto, carrots, tomatoes, and candied hazelnuts dressed in vinaigrette was refreshing. My only suggestion would be to slice the prosciutto for easier enjoyment. The bread and butter were a lovely addition, and we appreciated their quality. The Manicotto Di Spinaci was another highlight--huge portion and very satisfying! I say maybe because it must have been an off night. The place is a cool remodeled old firewall and when you head to the upstairs dining room you can walk right by the firepower to the 1st floor. The food sounded delicious but all came out tepid at best. After I sent it back 2x the manager came to say that this wasn't normal but that they were having issues. Restaurant week visit! Reservations were made in advance. Parking was limited- they do not offer parking , but you can find 2 hour parking in the neighborhood or park in a paid lot across the street. This historical 2 story building was located on a corner across from the hemifair. Walking in ..... it's a cool, trendy, elegant, and sophisticated hip spot that originally was a fire station. The fire poles still remain, and have been revamped and surrounded with hard clear acrylic, for views between upstairs and downstairs. Sexy bar downstairs and their kitchen was located upstairs. We started off with some cocktails . I ordered the A side- Tito, limoncello, and raspberry Wow super strong lol My friend and I asked to have some extra raspberry added. Service was slow in getting the extra raspberry, but we still needed a little extra simple syrup. That took awhile to get.... Finally with the addition of the syrup, it was drinkable. Off of the restaurant week menu, I ordered: Pear salad without pecorino- good. The arugula and marinated chunks of pear had a nice light vinaigrette. Apparently, they are known for their 3 cheese pork and beef meatballs. A few others at our table ordered them and let me tell you... they were bomb!! San Antonio's major hotels near the Convention Center don't offer many non-chain and hotel based eateries. I was lucky enough to find this Italian restaurant a half mile away and booked a table same day online. The service was truly exemplary and the prices were very reasonable for some unique and delicious food. You cannot pass up those spinach dumplings resting in a memorable white truffle sauce. They were so delicious. We also tried two of the pastas - the fettuccini and the orchiaetta - and the pan seared green beans. We found all three dishes on the salty side yet really flavorful. The orchiaetta was very al dente and the fettuccini was cooked perfectly. We really enjoyed everything. To end the meal, we tried their house made tiramisu that was absolutely GINORMOUS. It was decent in flavor but perhaps needed a bit more espresso soak. We would definitely eat here again. They run an excellent restaurant and the service could not be beat. Ordered a classic margarita with salt on the rim as my drink of choice and it was pretty strong and good. For apps, we got the bread service + ricotta dip (delish sourdough bread), the cantaloupe with tiny bits of prosciutto (very different, but apparently they marinate the cantaloupe in a sauce) and the burrata (very fresh with the tomatoes). Waiter went over the menu and made some suggestions so we went with those suggestions and I ordered the Three Cheese Pork and Meat Balls which are squares not round IDK why but the meat a bit salty but the sauce made up for it, second dish was NY Strip alla Florentine which was little rough and taste was ok little bland on some bites and the cut potatoes suck! The star of this show was the Spinach Manicotti could not get enough me being a carnivore it was way better than that lame NY Strip! Last but not least desert was S'mores Panna Cotta was recommended by gentleman in line behind us and my only complaint was a took awhile to get over to our table which cause my two hour parking to expire without realizing it I blame it on the house wine which tasted ok. A portion of Cacio e Pepe, overcooked, was the same price as a side of buttered spaghetti one of us ordered as a side, $16. That's too much. Bread service is cheap. Battalion has been on our list for a minute and a birthday/anniversary celebration seemed like the perfect combination. We made a reservation for Friday night. The building and ambiance are spot on, perfect vibe for a special date night. Server was delightful and intuitive which is much appreciated in this business. We started with Bread Service and the Spinach Dumplings. If we had stopped here maybe this review would be higher. We continued with Cacio e Pepe, Lasagna, Chicken Parm and the Parmesan-Herb Crusted Lamb Chops...sounds tasty. Cacio e Pepe wasn't horrible but wasn't memorable either. We actually sent the Lasagna back because it was over done, the noodles were more like croutons. That was my first big disappointment because if you can't get a good lasagna at an Italian place there are probably bigger disappointments around the corner. And there were. The Chicken Parm was mediocre but flavor profile was lacking. AND THE LAMB CHOPS...it should be illegal to drown out the lamb with parm. The description isn't off, they are definitely Parm Herb CRUSTED, if there was lamb under all of that, I have no idea. Came for dinner with a group and had a prefixe menu because we had 8 in our party, it was a starter, entree and a dessert. I decided on the pear salad that was the best part of the meal in crisp pears, amply dressed, large portion, it was delightful. I then had the strip steak which i already knew would be not the greatest cut but it was decently tender. A bit too salted but ok if you like things on the saltier side. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I then ended with tiramisu which was decent, not too sweet but nothing to write home about. The sides were decent. I think the best was the polenta with mushrooms. Again the meal overall was ok. A few things that weren't so great. I have experienced a whirlwind of emotions at Battalion. My first taste was by happenstance as a group of friends who were nearby decided we should stop in for a drink, and of course we aren't going to go without a snack, so I shared a plate of meatballs. I didn't stop talking about them for the remainder of the night. Absolute home run, I wish I hadn't shared, entirely worth getting again. So I did! The meatballs were just as delicious as I remembered the second time around but as for our main dishes- chicken parmesan and the lamb chops- I cannot say the same. In a weird turn of events, the food felt TOO seasoned. There was a strong essence of dill riddled throughout each dish and even my my drink which was infused with thyme packed way too much of a punch to be enjoyable. After this experience I figured the meatballs were a pleasant fluke and didn't expect to return. Well as fate would have it, I did find myself there a third time and here is where my four star review clawed it's way out of the dill pit. I ordered the orecchiette alla campagnola and it was *chef's kiss* I couldn't have been happier with the flavors and the cook on the pasta and I scooped up every last bit! I also got to taste a second round of the chicken parmesan and the flavor avalanche had been tamed. This time the dish came exactly the way you'd hope for this lovable go-to plate. They managed to hook me here but a few things to note: fully anticipate to walk or Uber as you won't find parking, the restaurant is dimly lit if that poses a struggle for you, and it is also entirely possible you may be seated upstairs so plan to let them know ahead of time if anyone in your party can't make it up and back down a flight so you can be seated on the first floor. I was invited to join some friends at Battalion for Restaurant Week, and it was a great experience. I loved that it is in the trendy South Town area of SA and a converted fire station. The food is delicious and the crafted drinks perfect. Service was pretty good, and I have to say the hostess that day went beyond. I arrived early and parking for the Battalion area is costly. I believe it is almost $20 dollars, so I looked for alternative parking. Pro tip on parking, if you arrive after 6, you can park on the street for free, but at the time, I didn't know it. I arrived a bit earlier and walked in to ask the hostess about the parking and she graciously walked out and pointed areas where I could park. She could have just mentioned areas, the fact that she walked out with me to point them out gets Battalion high points for service. The Restaurant Week menu was about $45 dollars and the food looked delicious. I ordered a meal from their regular menu, but the people at my table that got food from the Restaurant Week menu, loved it. My meal consisted of Spinach Dumplings, Pear Salad, and Charred Green Beans and the Battalion Spritz with Aperol. I also shared the Bread Service with the Calabrian Eggplant. All were outstanding. Battalion is certainly on the costlier side and portions are not extravagant, but prices are more reasonable than some other fancy Italian restaurants in town, especially the pastas. A great place for quality pasta on date night! I recommend getting a reservation and trying to find street parking before parking at the lot next door. Lot costs $15 parking for up to 8hrs. The service was great. Our server gave us some recommendations when we asked about his favorites. The most disappointing part of the meal was the bread with herb butter. It's not included with the meal, so we paid for like 4 pieces of bread and some butter with red pepper flakes on it. There wasn't much noticeable infused herb flavor. I would probably try the garlic oil next time. I ordered the Garganelli al Proscuitto which had hazelnut cream and parmesan. I loved it! The nutty flavor but richness in the sauce and cheese was very savory and delicious. It might be my favorite pasta that I've ordered at a restaurant. Not like anything I've had before. My gf got the Eggplant Parmesan and the waiter suggested we pair it with a pasta. So we also got a Manicotto di Spinach. The pasta didnt feel super necessary but it was still good to have a but extra for leftovers. My gf loved the eggplant dish and the sauce. We also ordered the frozen Limoncello cocktail. It was very strong and good to split between us, since we were already drinking before. They had a good wine selection, if you rather pair with a wine. The stars of the show were definitely the famous spinach dumplings and charred corn casareccia. We found this place on google maps and liked the idea of a firehouse turned Italian restaurant, so we figured we'd check it out for dinner. Absolutely do not regret that decision. The atmosphere is so cool, the food was incredible and the service was stellar. I was in love with the fact that they kept the bones of the firehouse in tact when they designed the restaurant, but still made it feel cozy somehow. I had the orecchiette and it was some of the best I've ever had. My friend had the chicken parm and practically devoured the entire thing, when she's usually not the type to finish an entire plate. She got the Tiramisu for dessert and said it was fabulous, and I got the panna cotta, which was more of a mousse texture and I'm not mad about it. It was perfection. Our server was attentive and incredibly nice, constantly checking in to make sure we were okay and didn't need anything.
