They made up a template for us during that process, so we could tape the template onto the slab, to show dexactly where we wanted the cuts to be made. They also did an excellent job with creating the holes for the faucet and levers. They also fixed an area in our kitchen sink where the granite had chipped from many years ago. I had Juan, George and their team from Bay area Stone & Tile transform my kitchen completely from an original kitchen from 1980's that had tiled countertop, old sink with an awkward peninsula to an open and modern kitchen space. I met with Juan for the estimates, he was very receptive to my ideas and responsive to changes in the proposal as I was figuring out the right scope of work for my budget and time. He provided a very detailed and competitive estimate, and also offered helpful suggestions for procuring the materials using his contractor pricing. Juan and George started the project on the committed date, and his crew was very respectful of my property and protecting it from construction dust/debris. I had a specific ask of them to reuse existing cabinets from the peninsula that was to be demoed and reuse it in the same space against the wall. I was skeptical about how cleanly this would be done, but George pulled off this applying his masterful carpentry skills and also patched the floor tile. For the countertop, I purchased one jumbo quartz slab and had it delivered to their shop. After templating, I visited their shop for layout and it was a close fit ... just enough material for all pieces of the kitchen counter and the beautiful window sill. In the end the fabrication and countertop installation was perfect, and the single seam in the counter is well matched up. In addition to the countertop installation, they did the backsplash, sink and garbage disposal installation, range hood installation, recessed light installation plus drywall patching to cover up holes. Overall, working with Juan and George was an enjoyable experience, there were several challenges along the way as expected from a remodeling project, and they discussed with me available options to ensure I was comfortable with the solution chosen to address it. They were flexible with me on timing and did not have a huge delay on getting me a quote (often a challenge with others I contacted). The actual process got off to a great start demo in a day as well as every working day was well cleaned up after. The crew from Bay Area Stone tried hard, and had a pretty hard job fitting large, heavy quartz panels into my tiny bathroom. But in the end, the job had a lot of mistakes. Two of the panels were out of alignment, height-wise, by about half an inch. Another panel had a big chip in the corner. My drywall had gouges all over the walls and ceiling. The redguarded styrofoam shower pan had been gouged and dented all over the place. They used epoxy to attach to the walls, even though the manufacturer instructions say the warranty will be voided if you use epoxy. They offered to put in a second layer of drywall on my ceiling after I complained, but the drywall job was sub-par, with screws not fully embedded in the drywall, and recessed lighting holes out of alignment. Worst of all, when I did a flood test after the job was done, it failed. Clearly they have gouged up the redguard behind the quartz panels, which is now impossible to fix unless I tear the whole thing out. I'm still trying to figure out how to solve this problem. This was obviously too hard a job for this company. They should have declined the job. But instead they made a huge, possibly irreparable mess. UPDATE: I'm sorry to have to say this, because I really don't harbor any ill will against this company anymore. I've moved on. But the reply to my review is factually incorrect. George has not reached out to me over e-mail. I just double checked. He may have called--I don't answer all my calls. But he hasn't ever left a voicemail if he has called. Regarding the framing in the home. It's a 1950's home. Surely you are used to framing being a bit off with older home remodels. When measuring, Juan did not indicate that the framing was off. Not only that, he hadn't even brought a level with him--he had to borrow mine! It is true that I used Laticrete waterproofing. Several coats of it in fact, all installed carefully according to the manufacturer's directions. I did flood testing prior to the panel installation, and it was quite successful. I called it Redguard in my review because they're basically the same thing, and Redguard is much better known. read more

Let me add another 5 star review for George and the team. I contacted Bay Area Stone and Tile based on these reviews and I was not disappointed. George showed up promptly, gave me a very competitive estimate, and they started work the next week. The removal of old tile went smoothly and the team was very conscientious about putting down drop cloths, taping off doors, etc. The installation of the new tiles went equally well, Manuel did a thorough, beautiful job. My wife and I were both thrilled at the result. He spent time with me deliberating through some of the design decisions and was a pleasure to work with. After their job was complete, though, was when George really shone. We needed some sheetrock repair done, so I asked if he had any recommendations and pow! a guy was here the next day. We needed to add some more tile beyond what we had originally planned and Manuel was already at another job...pow! George had Gustavo here the next day. His flexibility and responsiveness were amazing. He is great on text and phone, which I really appreciated. Finally, he charged us very little for the additional work, and checked in with me throughout to see how the project was going. I will definitely go back to these guys next time we need tile work. I've had Bay Area Stone & Tile do a number of projects for me over the past 7 years and have recently had them do two bathroom remodels for me, one being the master bath and one being a smaller bathroom. The work done on the master bathroom involved tear out of all existing flooring and wall tile, the shower glass panels and pan, and tear out of the granite vanity tops and full wall mirrors. The new work included the installation of all new floor tiles (24"x24"), quartz shower wall tiles up to 8 feet in height, new tiled shower pan with a low-profile quartz curb, quartz wall tile extending out and surrounding the existing jacuzzi tub (that matches the shower wall tile), two quartz vanity tops, and installation of new sinks, faucets, shower fixtures and related hardware throughout. The shower also included an inset and small tiled bench. The smaller bathroom involved removal of a bathtub and replacing it with a fully tiled walk-in shower with a tiled pan. The bathroom floor was also replaced with 24"x24" porcelain tile. As always, Juan and George (the owners) performed the work on time, from the initial start time to the finish, including benchmark completion items throughout the project. The project has been completed for about three months with no significant issues. A couple of minor issues came up, mainly from other subcontractors hired by me, and Juan was kind enough to fix those items quickly and without hesitation (and at no charge!). As for pricing, I occasionally spot check other contractors for upcoming work and Bay Area Stone & Tile has always come in lower from about 7% to as much as 80% than other contractors. The 80% contractor was simply in "gouge mode". That being said, my decision to use Bay Area Stone & Tile over the years is governed 85% on quality of workmanship, reliability, and their commitment to stand behind their work without prodding or begging like one has to do with other contractors. Their competitive pricing is just "icing on the cake"! Lastly, Juan, George, and their entire crew are simply really nice guys to work with and who are very considerate of my home and maintaining good "cleanup practices" at the end of each day. Juan checks the jobs often to identify any issues that need to be addressed, which have always been minor and handled expeditiously and at little to no price change. Juan and George are thoroughly professional, incredibly knowledgeable, very flexible, on-time, and a genuine pleasure to work with. I've had four major remodels or builds from scratch, and this is the first team I've worked with that I can confidently say I'd use again without hesitation. We were extremely pleased with every aspect of the job. Their pricing was fair, and any time there was a change order we discussed the costs and they immediately updated the estimates. We recently had our fireplace retiled, kitchen backsplash retiled, and replaced all of our kitchen countertops with George and Juan (owners) and their amazing crew. Honestly, I had consulted with 2 other contractors prior to them, almost started a job also but had trouble getting the other contractors to visit the site or even give me a quote once they did. 2 months I went around and around. Until I found George and Juan, within a few days they were here, and a few days after I had a quote. The job took a little longer than estimated (which is usual) but it was also right around Thanksgiving time so they were super slammed with business. Regardless, they did a beautiful job!!! Prep/cleanliness: They covered all of my new hardwood floors so carefully and were so diligent about prepping areas and CLEANING areas where they were working, every day when I came home it was as if the were never there (except for the covered floor and work they did which was apparent). I'm sure it's tough to work in a home where people are actually living but they were extremely conscientious about their tools, supplies, etc. being covered up or cleaned up. Work product: Holy moly, it all came out sooooo beautiful, I've gotten so many compliments. Of course we chose super inconvenient tiles to work with which took a lot of precision cutting and estimation to make sure the tile worked well. Small odd shaped glass tiles all over the kitchen and geometric pitched tile on the fireplace. All very visible so the layout really had to be perfect. I never had to tell them how or what direction, they just did it and only consulted me when it mattered. They also didn't complain! The sticky grout I chose also lengthened and made their job more difficult but it was better and they were honest that although it was more work for them, it was the better choice so they highly recommended. In addition to this, they have a really nice eye for design. I had a hearth for the fireplace that needed to be covered with tile as well but they suggested using some of the left over slab which would look much better. In theory, to me this seemed like it would be an easier job but it was so much more work than actually tiling it because they had to shave down the slab underneath to get it to be just the right depth to be flush with the ground AND had to fit into the area where the hardwood floor was shaped. They were right too, it looked so much better using the slab than it would have with the tile. Cost: Their estimate was very fair, especially compared to the quotes I received AFTER they started working (the contractors i contacted a month prior to George). I purchased all the tile myself because I changed my mind many times and it was just easier that way (make sure to tell the tile stores that you want a discount or you'll have your tiler purchase instead). I also had to go pick out/reserve the slabs myself and then BAS&T purchased it for me and dealt with delivery to their location, etc. So outside of the cost of the actual materials, the labor was inexpensive for the level of quality. Extras: Here's where I'm guessing where BAS&T differs from other similar businesses is in their customer service. These were seriously nice guys! I'm talking the day to day interactions, attention to detail, willingness to go the extra mile, and genuine honest/respectful nature. I even got pictures frequently during the day while I was at work so I knew what went on! Many surprises: I had these new cabinets installed flanking my fireplace which I was hoping to use extra slab for to put tops on them...this was a tricky area because the mantle right next to them was odd and slightly in the way. Not only did they build and notch around all the issues but they turned out absolutely beautiful and they intentionally didn't charge me! Another day I came home on the one of the last touch up days and found that they had used some extra slab to replace an exposed mini shelf in my kitchen (which used the old tile). It never occured to me to do this since it's such a small piece but it makes a huge difference and was a pretty cool surprise. And to top it off, they made me a little rounded edge cutting board (probably with the very last piece of slab). What a nice touch and oh my gosh what a great use of all the materials. We recently had new countertops installed in both our kitchen and bathroom. At the beginning of the process, Juan came out to meet with us on site, at our home, which was very convenient. From our first encounter, Juan instilled in us a rare level of trust and confidence. For this reason, we decided to engage Bay Area Stone & Tile for the job. Juan subsequently met with us at a supplier, to examine materials together. When that supplier did not have what we were looking for, he drove to another supplier, to meet with us there. We were impressed (amazed, really) by Juan's patience and genuine commitment to working with us, to help us find a material we liked. After the second supplier turned out not to have what we were looking for, Juan provided us with information about additional suppliers. Some were a bit out of the area but Juan had no hesitation in offering to pick up materials farther away. He answered all our questions patiently and thoroughly: by email, phone and in person. After we finally found what we liked and paid for the materials, Juan promptly made the trip to pick everything up, explaining that he makes a point of doing this promptly, to minimize the possibility of damage to materials as they are sitting around awaiting pick-up. He gave us excellent instructions about making arrangements with the supplier. Juan and his team then worked promptly and efficiently, ultimately producing countertops that showed excellent craftsmanship and giving us exactly what we wanted. Juan kept all of his promises: always showing up when he said he would and completing the various stages on schedule. In fact, he went beyond the call of duty, so to speak, by doing numerous extra things for us (at no additional charge). But beyond the amazing patience and kindness he showed throughout the process, I would mention two other points: First, we always had the feeling with Juan that he was genuinely concerned about our best interests, the same way a good friend or family member would be. This is something one rarely encounters with contractors. Second, the post-purchase customer service that Juan offers is truly exceptional. Several weeks after the job had been completed, we noticed that some settling had occurred and notified Juan about this. He promptly took the time to come back to our residence to do a superb job of recaulking, after explaining that this kind of settling is normal. He also addressed some other questions that had arisen. Frankly, I was embarrassed about the big bite out of his schedule that all of this was taking but Juan never rushed or looked at his watch or answered his phone when he was with us. He was completely focused, "in the moment," on helping us resolve all our questions to our complete satisfaction. The countertops are beautiful and the experience of getting the job done was more pleasant than we could have ever imagined. And we got the work done at a great price, too. I wanted to post an update :) Bay Area Stone & Tile recently came back out to do our kitchen backsplash (took us over a year to pick a tile LOL!!) They delivered everything and then some. These guys do as they say and promise! My backslash looks amazing! They are so clean when they work, making sure my floors and counters were covered, cleaning up thoroughly when they were done each evening. Juan is up front about everything and he's really good about asking/giving you all the detail that you need. I forget to ask questions and he happily clarifies. This keeps everyone on the same page. George and Juan are masters of their trade. I was redoing my fireplace and had my heart set on some sparkly glass mosaic tile that I'd seen online. It's custom-cut, so I could have any configuration I wanted. They helped me figure out what would look best, and they came over multiple times to make sure their measurements were precise. I ended up getting two large pieces of tile: one solid piece for the wall and one for the floor. It looks beautiful. My dad's a tough customer and when he visited for Christmas this year he was very impressed that they'd been able to handle such large pieces without breaking them or installing them improperly. I'll need to have my kitchen and dining room floors redone sometime soon and I'm planning on contacting Bay Area Stone & Tile for it once I figure out what general aesthetic I'm looking for. read more

Juan and Jorge just finish my backsplash today. They were awesome and very professional. There was some issues getting the stone on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 but with their help we resolved the problem and by that Sunday we were at their shop doing the layout for our counter top. They told us that the fabrication wouldn't get started until Wednesday and it would take 10 days from then. So, they came out on August 4 and install our beautiful counter top. We had to go back out for another layout on Friday August 7th for our backsplash on August 12 the came out with a big backsplash for behind my kitchen wall chimney fan (that is the picture below). They told me that the piece of granite weighed about 500 pounds. WOW!! It is absolute beautiful! Today, August 13th they finished the complete installation. Thank you so much!! After drying up using fans and a water pump I saw the extent of the damage - warped cabinets and cracked flooring tile. Within a couple weeks of dealing with my insurance company, I smelled mold in the kitchen as well and knew it was time to act. I called numerous contractors and chose Bay Area Stone and Tile because their price was not only competitive, but they taught me the ins and outs of dealing with insurance companies and ensured I received all the benefits I was entitled to. I am a very detail oriented person which can be frustrating for some people to deal with, but not the Project Manager Juan who drove me to eleven different stone quarries for the stone flooring alone! I had contacted over half a dozen tile contractors to come out and give me bids and interview them. As this was a major investment in both time and money we wanted to make sure we got the right person. We had every gamut of contractor from the late show to the totally ill prepared to the just simply inept. We chose Juan based on several factors. He was prompt in responding to our initial contact, showed up on time for the first appointment, was knowledgeable when I asked him questions, made suggestions on materials, gave us a competitive quote and seemed genuine. We were also on a time crunch since we had family coming into town. These guys ruined my beautiful master bathroom vanity. I had a large counter with double sink with a tile back backsplash. Very expensive stone with expensive tile. The slab was crooked, sloppy and cut too small overall so I had unusual gaps on the side. There were many tiles that were crooked and the some tiles stuck out more than others as if the mud behind it was uneven. I hadn't been in town for a few days when this all happened so I didn't see this all until it was too late. I don't like conflict and didn't want to smash it all out to fix it. They were recommended by a friend who just had their bathroom done and had an ok experience. Pricing was a factor to choose them but that was my big mistake. Buyer beware! I should have done more research and asked for more references. I can't believe that no one had issues on yelp like I did. If you consider these people, ask for plenty of references and see their work! I would not recommend them. read more

I had Bay Area Stone and Tile remove the old ceramic tile countertops and sink in my kitchen and replace them with granite countertops and a new sink, fixtures and garbage disposal. They did a beautiful and high quality job. I was very impressed that they took the time to have me come to their shop to give them my opinion on the areas of the granite slab that should be used so that they countertops would be most attractive. They also did the plumbing work which saved the time of coordinating with a separate plumber and they installed the extra steel supports that I wanted for the granite slab on the peninsula area. They took the time to do a quality job and the countertops, sink and fixtures look great. The owners, George and Juan, were on hand to oversee the work and the result was beautiful and professional job. I highly recommend this company. read more
