In case you are better at remembering with landmarks, it's a couple stores down from Loehmann's. The entire time that I was there from 1:15-2:00pm on a Friday afternoon there were other people there too. It seemed to stay consistently busy without being too much. There were two waitresses, both of which were very friendly and continued to refill my green tea after I had paid, which is always a plus. The food comes out quickly. I ordered a two-choice bento box for $8.95. I got sashimi and california roll - they let me sub the normal tuna sashimi for salmon for no additional cost. The california roll had too much rice but it was still pretty tasty. The salmon (4 pieces) itself had some veins but for the price was still pretty good. The sushi here is pretty good for the area, although their sushi is mostly what I ate - I can't really rate their other stuff like bento boxes or anything. This place surpassed my expectations for being a hole in the wall beside Loehmann's. This has been the best sushi I've ate yet here in the Bay Area, reminds me of the quality sushi bars I grew up eating at in Vancouver. Sushi is great, no actually its awesome! The rolls come in a culinary art form and taste as delicious as they look. I recommend the Hollenbeck and Dragon. Cleanliness its top notch, there are many other Asian restaurants in the area that have chairs and tables that are just greasy and dirty. THIS IS NOT THE CASE HERE! No real cons here, the staff are very humble and quiet - not so much the conversation type but still friendly! I find the place a little bit pricey, however where I'm from Japanese cuisines are much cheaper. Plus the food quality definitely makes it worth while. I've now had Bay Sushi three times and I must say, I'm a fan. I've only had sushi and sashimi here, and the fish has always been very fresh and flavorful. I'd recommend the Chef's sushi special. It's only $40 for two people and comes with more than enough sashimi and nigiri to fill you up. The staff has been friendly and attentive and the restaurant is kept very clean. I appreciate that they prefer to keep their tables spaced out so diners can enjoy their meals without being two feet away from each other. I've come to expect the opposite from most Japanese establishments over the years in their attempts to maximize nightly covers. I ordered 2 3 entree bentos (see pictures) with tonkatsu, gyoza, and salmon sashimi in one, and saba, california roll, and salmon sashimi in the other. The food was all pretty good, and the salmon sashimi was surprisingly fresh. However for the amount that we got, I think that the bentos are definitely over priced. Stopped in here for a late dinner over the weekend. They weren't very busy, (which had me a little worried!) We were pleasantly surprised by the food! I had the hamachi sashimi, and an eel/avocado roll. Both were very good, and the hamachi seemed very fresh. I was really disappointed that they only have imitation crab, (which ruled out several rolls for me.) I tried my hubby's gyoza, and they were pretty tasty too. Complete with small sushi bar, simple decor, nothing makes it stand out either as unique or bad. We were promptly seated and soon were shocked at the menu. It's really expensive! Like almost 20 for a sushi combo!! We decided on a bento combination with saba and fried oysters and also a chirasi. The miso soup was pretty good and hearty, though the salad was too mayo based and lacked enough to cover enough of the lettuce. The saba was dried out but ok. The chirasi was fairly good, fresh, decent cuts and overall pretty good but not great for the money. The fried oysters (4 pieces) were by far the best quality item. They were juicy, a good sized and just the right amount of breading. For the price it was just not worth the quality, nothing unique, the service was standard. My pal and I were the only ones in there but found out later they do a brisk to-go business.So we sit down at the Sushi Bar and I look over the menu and fire off my order. I went here with my friends and god sister tonight. Everytime when I passed by, I thought it shouldnt be a good restuarant but my friend told me it is not bad and sometime they wont open regularly. This non-descript strip mall restaurant is easy to miss, and a name as generic as "Bay Sushi" doesn't help them stand out either. Fortunately, a co-worker had tried it out before and brought me there. It's now joined my small list of regular spots for lunch. The restaurant has a couple handfuls of tables and a very small sushi bar. It's modestly decorated and resembles every other cheap to mid-range sushi place you've ever been in. The food is solid, if not always fantastic. The terriyaki is decent, and the sashimi is fresh enough. Sometimes it's very good, sometimes closer to "ok". The gyoza, however, are some of the best I've had. They have a touch of crispiness to them that some folk may consider over-fried, but I just love. You people can keep your soggy, floppy potstickers... lemme have my crispiness! I'm not a maki kinda guy, so I'll let the other yelpers cover that. Can't believe I used to live SO close to here and never tried this place! This is my place!! I've been looking high and low for a mid-range, consistent sushi place to call my own. This is initial impression, so hopefully it's consistent... but otherwise I've been thoroughly impressed. I've tried almost all the Korean sushi places around Sunnyvale/Santa Clara, and a few of the (reasonably priced) Japanese ones as well. None of them have fared well - either the sushi is chewy when it shouldn't be (you know what I'm talking about - that white, tendony, chewy stuff that prevents you from actually eating nigiri in separate bites, though you shouldn't be doing that in the first place?), or the flavor is WAY off (in the case of a few REALLY cheap places in the area), or the texture is completely wrong, or it's too expensive for me to afford on a regular basis. I tried the following: 1. Maguro Nigiri. Very good, clean taste with that sort of hint of meat that I like. Nevermind, hard to explain. The important thing is that it was fresh, no sinewy chewy bits, and good. A relief after all the bad maguro I've had in recent months. 2. Sake Nigiri. Also very good, but I think this was the worst of the nigiri that I ordered. That's saying something, as usually salmon is the best-tasting of what I order, since it's the hardest to screw up. Not that they screwed up - I just thought that the taste wasn't really as good as it could have been. Color wasn't that vibrant, either. 3. Hamachi Nigiri. OMG AMAZING. I don't really know too much about hamachi, but it seems there are several different kinds; in sushi restaurants I usually see two of them - one is more clear and one is more white-pink colored. The one they have here is the white-pink colored, it is oily, it is delicious, it is amazing. :) 4. Dragon Roll. This is unagi on the outside and shrimp tempura inside. If I bring my boyfriend when we go to sushi, he is bound to order something of this variety, so I figured I'd try it out and if it was okay, coax him to come back with me. The dragon roll was alright. Honestly, the unagi could have used a little improvement - there were spiky bits in it, and really chewy skin that I eventually gave up on and spat out. I think sushi restaurant reviews should be read according to what you look for. I'm a nigiri/sashimi hound but I'm also not willing to pay a fortune for two slices of raw fish... 8 dollars for nigiri is just ridiculous. (I've been to places where they charge by the slice!) For me, this restaurant was perfect - the price of maki sushi and nigiri is just right (I prefer maki sushi, given the choice... call me crazy but I do actuallly like it when sushi FITS IN MY MOUTH) and the quality is great! That being said, if you want to be anal about it, here are the cons: 1. "Crazy" rolls - IE, Korean style really really big rolls with all sorts of crunch and pizazz - are not too plentiful here; I think the menu was about one page big. 2. Nigiri could have been a bit thicker cut. I think I would have rather had thicker but smaller pieces of nigiri. This place DOES also suffer from let's-make-all-nigiri-huge syndrome, which I do appreciate in that I'm getting more food for the money, but don't appreciate because it makes me look like an ingrate while I eat my nigiri in three bites... yes I'm one of those people, shutup. 3. As noted before, you might want to lay off the unagi... it's really not worth it. On that note, the shrimp tempura isn't anything to write home about, either - it was over-fried when I had it. read more

The ambiance at Bay Sushi is nice, the seating comfortable, and the service super friendly and accommodating. The food is mid-tier, definitely a step up from Miyake or Sushi Tomo with higher quality and higher price. The bentos looked generous but they weren't amazing. The fish is fresh and fairly affordable, but it won't astound you. There's no high-end toro, and you'd never confuse the food here for that of a restaurant at the top half of the Sushi Monster list (http://www.emeraldlake.com/sushilist.html). But all in all, a solid neighborhood Japanese restaurant. If you're in the Sunnyvale area and are looking for a compromise between price and quality, Bay Sushi may be your place. I'd been looking at this place since I moved to Sunnyvale, since it's pretty close to my new apartment. Every time I walked by, I wondered whether or not it was any good. The other night, my roommates and I decided it was worth a try with a restaurant.com coupon. So we went this past weekend and decided to check it out. With the restaurant.com coupon, we ended up getting a pretty wide variety of things. We ordered the edamame and seaweed salad as appetizers, though my roommate didn't seem like he was too pleased with the seaweed salad. I ended up getting a bento box with tempura and teriyaki salmon, another one of my roommates got the udon, and the third got the tempura and beef teriyaki. I think the first thing we noticed when we got our food was that the tempura wasn't really very Japanese. Real Japanese tempura is intended to have a very light batter, with a layer very thin that it doesn't add much weight to the food it's surrounding. This batter was.... dense. It was almost like it was the same batter that one might use for a beer-battered fish + chips in an English pub. When I peeled off the batter from the shrimp, it basically took off 3/4 of the weight of the total item. I had one piece with the batter, and the other without. Same for the veggies. It left a lot to be desired. The fish was OK, as were the potstickers, but they weren't anything to write home about. The udon was mediocre, mostly because the broth wasn't too flavorful. The beef + noodles in the udon seemed passable, though. I think the same for the beef teriyaki, too. Definitely a place to try out with a restaurant.com coupon. Came here with my mom and little brother for lunch. We ordered udon, bento box (4 piece sashimi with grilled mackerel), and beef teriyaki don. First things first, it is owned by Korean people, so if you don't like that then... Don't come here. On to the food. Quality was pretty sub-par. Udon was "delicious" according to my brother, but he likes most noodle dishes. The sashimi was not the best, and the there were only 4 pieces in the bento, which cost $9, quite expensive. The beef teriyaki don came with no onions or egg, the bowl of rice it came with was HUGE, compared to the two thin slices of beef, cut up. The beef tasted like it had been grilled for about 15 minutes, too long for how thin the cut was. The beef was not marinated either, so other than the teriyaki sauce on top of the beef, it was tasteless. Service was good, but then again we were one of three tables in the restaurant. Though I heard a lady nearby tell the waitress, who brought a bento box, that she ONLY wanted sashimi, not the sashimi bento box... Don't know if it was a miscommunication or what. Overall, food quality was just not that great for the price. Everything could have been cut at least $2-3 for what they were serving. read more

Honestly had the best service experience here! I popped in with my daughter and got seated immediately during lunch hour. I asked for a special request for my roll which was no problem in her words. I also requested a little extra tofu for my daughters miso soup cause that is all she eats. Ashley went above and beyond and even asked me if she should also pick out the green onions. Sashimi salad. That's a new one. I was looking for a healthy meal post-workout and when I saw that, I was sold. It's chopped up sashimi over a huuuuge bed of lettuce and a bit of rice at the bottom all topped off with gochujang. And it really wasn't bad. I typically go for chirashi but having that extra lettuce there made the meal a little more filling without having to eat a butt ton of rice. I've been living in the area for 10 years and I never noticed this place till this year. After looking for a great sushi place on yelp I finally thought, why not. It's a very small location right next to Loehmanns. But, the food is delicious. The price is okay, but the quality matches the price so it makes up for it. Because it is Korean owned the slices of sashimi are a bit bigger. What I can truly say, is that there sushi is quite fresh compared to Sushi Boat, where the fish is dyed. If you don't believe me, put a napkin over it. There bento boxes are affordable and tasty. The teriyaki chicken and beef are good and the tempura is pretty good too. Also, the Sashimi Bay dish pretty good. The salmon and tuna are good and I'm not sure what the other 2 kinds of fish were but they were ok. I don't like the fishy tasting kind of fish so it wouldnt be fair to say that it was bad. But, others liked it. It's definitely worth a try. :) Btw, the first time I came here I ended up taking +5 people there the next 2 weeks. :P It was that good. I had ton-katsu spicy ramen, to-go. I probably should've never taken the ramen to-go because it got super soggy super fast. to the point that it tasted like instant noodles, I'm not sure if it was the fact that it was to-go or the actually quality of the noodles, but I am basing the review on what I tasted. Bay Sushi was about a 10 minute drive, so it's very possible. But I expected a lot I suppose since my boyfriends family really like this place. I was really hoping to get some ton-katsu in the ramen but I called to ask, and they told me that was just the flavor ): what a tease. +1.00 more for spicy rather than non spicy, and it just didn't kick my spice palette. It was not exceptional which is what I was hoping for. Went on a Wednesday and there was only one other table. It is a small place in a strip mall, there isn't much ambiance. But I don't ask for much when it comes to having sushi. I've been looking for a local sushi spot for the spur of the sushi craving moments...but I don't think this is the one. (My go to sushi spot is Yuki Sushi in Campbell, it's fantastic but oh too far to frequent.) Back to Bay Sushi... We ordered way too many rolls..Caterpillar, Dragon, Tekka, etc. They were just OK, the rolls seemed to fall apart easily, though the fish was fresh. And I felt the menu for sushi/sashimi was smaller that I'm used to. The service was decent, servers came at the right time but were not very friendly. Best part was shopping after dinner at Loehmann's next door :-) I most likely won't be back anytime soon, but it might be worth a shot for others to try out. read more

I ordered the No Name Roll (which is similar to other sushi places' Lion King Roll) It was a California Roll with Salmon on top that's baked and covered with mayonnaise as well as other sauces. I ended up paying around $10 for the roll including tax and tip. WHILE it might have tasted good (and HEAVY) for the moment, an hour later I was so bloated and my throat was very itchy and dry. My throat stayed sore for another day or so before it finally went away. I believe that the salmon wasn't really fresh enough and I got some light temporary food poisoning...
