I've been a vegetarian for years so it's been a while since I've been to a BBQ place. I was intrigued seeing this place with quite a few veggie options. A lot of it was tempeh and I'm not a big fan of tempeh so I was a bit reluctant. The tempeh salad was delicious the tempeh was crumbly and functioned almost like a crouton. didn't really taste like tempeh. The rest of the salad was good and I even liked the spicy cashew sauce. The black bean chili was also very good. Also I didn't leave the place feeling bloated. The rest of my family isn't vegetarian and they all liked their meals too. Service was very friendly.

Waitress at as nice but alright get this... we ordered the $16 pulled pork nachos, they looked very pretty and delicious but we took a bite and they were completely cold. The chips, the cheese, the pork, everything. Not even like warm. We were really really hungry so we were like okay whatever and asked her to put them in the microwave for us but at the end asked if they could take money off our bill for the nachos since no body wants to pay $16 for completely cold nachos. Anyways she comes back and said the manager said he'd take 10% of the nachos and it took off $1.65. This instantly pissed us off being more insulting if anything. What a cheapskate man! Best thing to do here is send your food back I guess

So good! I love that they are normalizing vegan and non vegans eating together! The food was delicious and the atmosphere is so nostalgic and cozy. We had the tri tip and pulled pork sandwich, regular Mac and cheese, vegan burger and vegan Mac and cheese. 10/10 recommend!

Wow- fantastic food across the board. Love their bbq sauce too. I had brisket/brat and pulled pork. My son loved the burger!

Picked up a Tri-tip sandwich yesterday with Mac N Cheese and it was delicious!! The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and wonderfully seasoned...not to mention that there was a ton of it. Have to say that the Mac sauce was a bit floury, needed to cook out that be beschemel a bit more. read more

Shockingly good. I was very skeptical going in but the food was delicious. (Really? BBQ and Vegan under the same roof??) I had the 1/2 and 1/2 sandwich and we had them deliver to the connected bar so we could catch the game and have a few beers. The vegan that was with us was amazed at the quality as much as I was. I highly recommend this to anyone. read more

The BBQ is excellent but some of the sides need work like the Mac cheese and potato salad. Those two need some serious rework. The owners should look into new recipes for those side as they are not good enough to where I'd spend the $2 for them again. BBQ is absolute wonderful. The service is excellent as well. Hi Brad, not sure who follows those sides for repeat orders but The Mac was dry sticky and barely had any cheese. Other reviews have mentioned that as well. Maybe it was a bad batch or sometime. I'll try it again and if it's the same I'll bring it to my servers attention. Your BBQ is so good that I'll be back, for that, though. read more

Love it healthy options for vegan friends while u pig out on great barbecue. I live in the south and this place rocks. The pulled pork nachos were amazing. Blow your diet and love it. Also a nice hang with some comfy booths that next time we hope to sit in. Another wonderful strip mall surprise. You go Boise just as good as the south. read more

Amazing bbq and atmosphere. I've been eating the bbq since they were a small food truck/smoker. The ribs will always be my favorite but the tri-trip comes in a close 2nd. The ribs are like no other place in Boise, I'm a fat kid at heart and have had bbq everywhere and this place is my favorite. read more

Pros: only legit BBQ place around and they aren't complacent. Always changing specials. BBQ places shouldn't have good soups...but i would put theirs up against any restaurant in Boise. If there is something bad on the menu, i haven't found it. Cons: none that i can find. The only thing i can think of is maybe the super casual feel read more

Love this place! The steak tacos, pulled pork sandwich, and butternut squash are favorite choices and I love that they have gluten free bread. Don't be fooled by the vegan sign - they serve vegan and regular options, and you can tell from the diverse dietary selections that they care about having something for everyone. read more

This place is Legit. I have only tried the Vegan sandwiches, but they do not disappoint. They are delicious! The Spicy Squash sandwich and the Vegaloaf are ridiculous. Also the Mac and cheese and potato salad (both non vegan) were super yum. We got our sandwiches to go, so we dont have the dine in experience, but I would give the food a 5 for sure. read more

Great BBQ! Love that they have vegan options. We need more vegan and vegetarian options in the Boise area. They catered my friends wedding reception and it was delicious, and everyone loved the food. I love the ketchup they make, I think it's called MFT brand. Definitely check them out! read more

Awesome tri-tip sandwich! Good Mac and cheese but it came out pretty luke warm for both of our meals. We got the lemon bar for dessert which was to die for! Or server Bre even said she gave us the biggest one she could find since we were all sharing! She was very sweet and even ran after us(we had already driven a little- so kudos to her) because my mom left her phone! We will return :) read more

This place will make you question you veganism as the smell of amazing BBQ hits you as soon as you walk in the door. Stay strong my friends. I somehow did and had the vegaloaf and Mac and cheese. It was good. Flavorful and substantial. A little more BBQ sauce was needed but that came promptly too. Sweet tea to boot. Nothing will ever compare to southern pulled pork BBQ, but this satisfied my vegan ways.... For today. read more

Yesterday as I watched the news I saw the owner of this joint on TV talking about BBQ week so I decided to try it out for lunch. To say it was Real BBQ would be a massive understatement. The tri-tip Sandwich, Philly style, was sooo soft, smokey, sweet, and tender that I had to set it down, take a deep breath, pause and reevaluate my situation. Was I in Kansas, Texas or St Louis, no I'm in Boise off Vista. WOW!! BBQ is always so salty and greasy with grizzle but not here. I'm so glad I found this place, and now u have a customer4LIFE! Seriously the best vegan meal I've eaten in all of Idaho, and one of my new all time favorites anywhere!! When i walked in the door it smelled so good I was tempted to part with my vegan eating after 5 years, but the vegan selections all sounded delicious too, so I stuck with it and tried the Vega loaf sandwich (a sweet marriage of bbq tempeh and potato salad) and a delightful butternut squash side. Then the vegan bread pudding desert... SO good, and I had to take half home for a late night snack! I'll definitely be back this week. The service was fantastic as well, very friendly and attentive. I don't get it??? Why are they so highly rated? Nice people for sure, but by far the worst BBQ joint in the Boise area. Are you kidding me?? This must be their friends posting. The inside looks like a dump 70s diner. The pulled pork- zero flavor. Ribs- zero flavor, terrible dry and looks and feels like boiled meat and not smoked. Again, nice people, but this is NOT BBQ! Sides are awful as well. On my worst day of BBQ-ing I would SMOKE this place!!! Bodacious in Eagle and just about any place is far better. Sorry, but the food is no good and it has no connection to actual BBQ. It reminded me of a buffet. I feel bad to tell the truth. We would never go back for any reason. Shame on all of you bogus posters!! WOW! What a nasty reply to my sincere comments. I even took the time to compliment the people. But the place is a dump and the food SUCKS!!! I means SUCKS!!!! I did voice my comments and they offered to refund. I felt you needed the money more than I did. But no worries, your reply makes me know that you know your food sucks. It looked like boiled ribs! We had heard mixed reviews about this place and were a bit leery of giving it a try. Our friend Todd brought us in for lunch today and it was delicious. The bread pudding was stupid good! This is a destination restaurant! Best ribs ever. The pictures are accurate. Ribs were 1-1/2 inches at widest without ANY fat. Great sauce. Great potato salad. Having Vegan and Carnivore selections a great idea for the troubled family. read more

We stopped here on our drive to Colorado and were very happy with our meals. It's located near the interstate and they have good fast service. We tried their tri tip and pulled pork sandwiches and the meat was very tender and the bbq was full of flavor! The mac n cheese was homemade and it had a little spicy kick to it that I liked. The potato salad was nice and light for potato salad. Fruit cup was a good variety fresh fruit. We will definitely stop by next time we drive through Boise. read more

We had a quick stop in Boise and tried BBQ4Life because of it's Yelp reviews. We also couldn't resist the quirky combination of BBQ and vegan. For you carnivores, you can enjoy delicious, traditional barbecued meats. I really enjoyed their barbecued version of a meatball sub. For the vegans in your party, they had a wide variety of items. We tried a couple of their vegan side dishes and our socks were really knocked off!! An absolute highlight was the butternut squash. If I lived anywhere near Boise, I'd be stopping in regularly to eat that alone! Butternut squash, BBQ spices and hazelnuts roasted to perfection! read more

I love their diverse menu: the fact that you can order vegan food at a BBQ place is 100% awesome! I ordered the unique Bigfoot Sandwich, which has mac-n-cheese on it. Though the sandwich and the side it came with were cold, the server quickly gave us a fresh, hot side to compensate = great service. I'll keep coming to this place for their unique menu and great service. read more

Very delicious barbecue meats, but wasn't too keen on the beans or the cornbread. I like the beans to be thicker and not so sweet, and the corn bread to have a hint of honey. The salad was tasty too! Also, my husband had the Boylan birch beer and it was delicious!!! read more

Specialties

Big changes for BBQ4LIFE, As some of you might know there are massive shortages in the supply chain which are running us out of our main products, even some of our small ingredients are hard to find. When we can find the products we need some of them are 300% up in price if not more. We don't know when these issues will be fixed and rather than have half our menu unavailable and the other half reflecting the rising cost of goods we are going to slash our menu and focus on sandwiches we can make that don't rely on a specific cut of meat so that we can be a value to our customers. We will also stop offering catering as there is no way for us to guarantee the product we would be promising. For the time being we will be “Sandwiches by BBQ4LIFE”. We will be rolling out this new menu starting June 17th and we will of course still be focused on quality and will be doing all the grinding, seasoning, stuffing, curing and smoking in house, we will just have a much smaller menu. A Lot of you have been loyal customers for years and that means the world to us. Please know that we are doing everything we can to strike a balance between happy customers, happy employees and a successful business. We made it through the shut down to here by the slimmest of margins and we know we couldn't have done it without all of you, thank you very much. P.S. The Meatball sandwich and the bratwurst sausages are coming back.

History

Established in 2013.

In April, 2013 We started as a food truck called B-Hive BBQ & Vegan and our main spot was set up outside of Stonehenge Produce on Overland Road. By October we joined up with local sauce company My Family Tradition Sauces & Rubs and moved into the Rodeway Inn off of Curtis Road and became MFT BBQ & Vegan. One year later, here we are today in our new location back on the Boise Bench in the Vista Village with our new name BBQ4LIFE (We promise this will be our last name change). We still continue to use My Family Tradition Sauces and work closely with them but we decided to make this final name change to avoid confusion between the two different businesses and to promote what we're all about, and that is bringing you the best darn BBQ...for life!

They have also made several menu changes and changes to how they advertise in the actual brick-and-mortar location. Picked up some dinner tonight, chosen because they had smoked turkey and were VERY close to the hotel I was staying (walking distance). I went "all out" and got their 3 meat plate. I chose chicken, turkey ($2 upcharge) and sausage. I also had to try their chili. Food was packaged well for travel! I was thinking chili is chili, until I removed the top. It had several chunks of beef!! They even brought me more onions and cheese for my chili. This place smelled amazing and everyone was super friendly!! If you're ever in Boise Idaho, give them a try!

BBQ4Life has a simple BBQ and Vegan menu. Sounds oxymoron'ish but actually very complementary to the palate. We had the most wonderful Pastrami Sandwich prepared to perfection with a slight hint of smoked flavor. We requested Terry's Tasty Special which came on grilled Hawaiian bread with melted cheese, mustard, and pickles. It is the perfect blend of sensation extremes and flavors; moist, warm, sweet, salty, acidic and smoky in every chew. If you don't see it on the menu make sure to ask. Let's not forget the fresh homemade side dishes- we had potato salad and vegan butternut squash with hazelnuts. The squash was perfectly firm, naturally sweet with a slight spicy after tone and garnished with the happy fat crunch of hazelnuts. The potato salad was exceptional and not over cooked, spiced or mixed. Each flavor stood on its own never overbearing. My partner and I are celiacs and needed a new place to go that is gluten free friendly. We looked online and found Bbq 4 life and saw that their whole menu can be made gluten free!!! We hopped in the car and tried them out and had an Amazing meal and the staff was awesome and so helpful. What a GREAT find and we definitely will be back to try their lunch and gf desserts. My out of state relatives came to visit and I was at a loss of where to take them because one of them is a vegan. Then I remembered BBQ4Life. I am glad I did because it was perfect. They dry rub them, so you don't have to deal with that messy hands and face thing at other restaurants. But, if the sauce is your thing, fear not, they're the best at that too. Go here. The BBQ was subpar. The staff was nice and beer selection was great but you could tell meat was presliced and not cooked on real hardwood. Brisket was definitely a choice and not prime cut.
