Of course a restaurant cannot be described as humanitarian, a service to the community: it is its owner, the restraunteur who is. And such is Dave Goodside, of the Beach Café. I like the food a great deal, but I'm hardly a gourmet so I'll leave the review/praise of the food to others; but I HAVE to tell you what Dave is doing to get us through the pandemic. He offers a package/program that delivers three days' meals. The variety of the dinners you choose from is comprehensive. The portions exceed generous X 2. In other words, what you think you're getting for 3 days will last you six or more. And beyond the soups (plural), greens (plural), entrées (plus 16 oz. of tuna salad for lunch with each order) bread, butter, desserts (plural)--all exceedingly well wrapped--he packs in three rolls of toilet paper and three pair of protective-sanitary gloves for you! (Don't you dare snicker at this; not now!). This is unlike any other offer/opportunity I know. And affordable beyond my expectation. I tried it once more and was hopeful. Now all hope is lost. This once great convenient 'go to' restaurant has run off the rails. Money has clearly been spent spiffing the place up. Perfect neighborhood place. We eat out constantly and Beaches is one of our favorites. Low key, relaxed, affordable homey environment. Variety of selections on the menu from chili to a steak dinner. Particularly love the steak salad and chicken noodle soup!!! Burgers, chicken, salads and steak good as well. The staff tries SO hard and really seem to care. We love it here... Mediocre food at best. We were a party of 6 and we were all underwhelmed with our choices. Chicken parm was so well done , you couldn't cut it. We asked to remove it from the bill and the waitress complied. I ordered a vodka and soda and it was extremely weak, even after the bartender remade it. I will not be returning. read more

This place is horrible. Its so overpriced considering the fact the food is cheap and not very nice tasting. In addition a small serving of soda cost 4 dollars. Once I walked in I immediately didn't like it. The vibes of the restaurant inside was like an old, cheap gas station you find on the side of the highway. I went here with my cousin for our lunch and order oysters which were $1 each and honestly.... It didn't taste that great! I lost my appetite and later on the day when I had to go boxing training my stomach didn't feel right. I ended up ordering chicken sliders which were really good. Although the chicken sliders were the only thing that was good there, I wouldn't go back there. The food is overpriced ! Smh. read more

All of my friends, that live in the neighborhood, have been coming here for years. When you're at an event at the Park Avenue Armory, on 68th Street, it's very convenient. Prices are reasonable. It's not a 5 star restaurant, but more of a neighborhood outdoor cafe/ bar/ local joint. They are famous for their burgers. I had mine with gorgozola and it was delicious. My friend enjoyed her bacon burger. We sat outside, under the stars, and had a most enjoyable time, thanks to the great service. Our waiter was so personable and friendly that we left with huge smiles. :) Adam seemed like he should be on the stage or the silver screen, and if that is his calling, I have no doubt he will make it, big. All staff was very attendtive and that's what we like. I understand that they have live entertainment and a lobster night. I hope to return, although I'm more of a downtown restaurant frequenter than an Uptown girl, even though my roots are there. Thank you for a fun evening. read more

A charming restaurant, with a great brunch. I am new to the neighborhood, and have come here for brunch three times. Each time I have been seated outside in their plant-filled enclosed space, and I have had a lovely time. The food is very good, and the service is excellent. Awesome burgers there.....or so you think. The price tag initially looks good, however once you add on the $2.00 cheese and $2.00 for bacon and onions your looking at a pretty overpriced burger for what it is. I have been to this place a few times. The food is decent and the prices aren't bad. I decided to take my parents for brunch when they were in town last weekend. I was so embarrassed because the service was awful. My dad found a piece of METAL in his salad. Not only did the manager not come over to apologize (even though he was walking right by our table), they didn't take it off the bill and just removed my mom's little cup of coffee instead. Though living close, I never really noticed this place before but my friends suggested it for brunch one Sunday. We were seated pretty quickly in the pleasant outside area. The service was prompt and courtious. We are all pretty hungry so we all ordered burgers. It was cooked fine, but not the best burger by far....kind of disappointing actually since I rarely eat them and feel like it was wasted on this one. You have to order fries additionally as well which makes you feel kind of cheated. Though you can pick cottage or shoe string so we ordered one of each. Overall, the food was boring and blah.. I give 3 stars based only on the fact that they have a Prix Fix $25 brunch for one entree and 4 drinks of bloody, mimosa etc. Do want to go back for that one thirsty afternoon! read more

Discriminates against the physically disabled. Was there twice, with different people with different disabilities: 1 in a wheelchair, 1 with a scooter. The one in a wheelchair was "asked" to sit at the far end of the bar (where the staff goes in and out of the kitchen) so that her chair wouldn't "get in the way" of other people coming and going. The man with the scooter was asked to park his scooter around the side of the restaurant, far from the entrance. This man is 93 and carries oxygen on his scooter. But as long as your entrance looks good.... Never will I go back to this place. You should be ashamed. Just be honest and put up a sign that says "We prefer those in wheelchairs and scooters go somewhere else." read more

Stay away from this place....the big fat owner-manager looks up and down the customers and then gives dumb ass reasons why a table is not available. Mind you clean - casual dress doesn't mean entrance into this small average looking dump, as we tried a couple of times to grab a bite. we did eat here 1x where a bald headed sinatra wanna-be bellowed songs (bad sound system). the food was decent basic fare and since we live in the neighborhood we figure to try it again...but after 3x trying to eat here again, and giving a rough time for a table or attempting a reservation, we said 'plenty of other places to eat in this city' this past incident we stopped in on a saturday about 6 (place was not busy, plenty of empty tables), to make a reservation that upcoming Monday night at 7, and this over-sized bloated manager-owner was making excuses as to why Monday would be difficult to accommodate. really...we walked out while he was still droning on.....who cares, go elsewhere....like i said, there are other places in the city that serve the same.....Nothing to see here....what a shame this place with this mentality is still around read more

Haven't been here in over a year and looked at the reviews, did not sound like the warm atmosphere, good service and good food we remembered but we were committed with another couple. The waiter was fairly busy, so I can't fully fault him for his negligence, but we waited 45 minutes to an hour to hear the dessert menu. We decided to just pay and leave, with a pretty steep bill. Wow. The Croque Madame for brunch is amazing! I had the scramble with smoked salmon and onions, but the others at the table had the CM and it was pretty out of this world. Horrible time. Ordered the Lobster bisque, it was essentially lobster in oil and grease. Inedible. Chicken fingers were burnt and lacked flavor. Wow. Just wow. The service was poor and the food was awful. I ordered the Beach shrimp salad and hardly touched it. Shrimp was mealy and the dressing couldn't even make the salad edible. My husband got the half chicken which is on their "favorites" list. Chicken was dry, broccoli overcooked. Not sure how you can mess up mashed potatoes and gravy, but they figured it out. This place is a local gem, opened in the 1960's. Food is great and staff is amazing... We come in for seats at the bar (always), and just LOVE both nightly bartenders, paul and jay, hands down our neighborhood favorites (and we get around!). The staff (especially bartenders) is what really makes or breaks most places for us. The owner, david, is always around and available to chat. He is a delightful man who knows most of the people inside his restaurant at any given time. This place is a team of wonderful group of fun and eccentric people that give it a great vibe. The menu is simple and always delicious, with classics like chicken potpie, meatloaf, lobster mac n cheese, 40oz porter house... 3lb lobster on mondays... excellent happy hour...and summer specials. Any of the bad opinions of this place are ridiculous to me... Go there and try it out. I advise sitting at the bar. Order a martini or fancy cocktail of choice and chat it up with jay or paul. This has been a neighborhood joint for my whole life. We've been friends with the manager and staff and always have an enjoyable dinner. My dad got his first drink here when he was growing up, back when they actually used to have sand on the ground. Its been through a lot of fundamental neighborhood changes, especially being hurt badly by the 2nd Ave. Subway, but havent changed a bit. Food is great and the manager loves getting to know his customers. If they still have the prime rib special on mondays its a total steal. read more

Not very beach like. I ordered food with my wife at an outside table on this beautiful Summer Day. We asked to move inside due to the construction noise out front. I was asked by management to remove my hat...it is a house rule you can wear a hat outside but not inside. I told them when their bus boys and kitchen staff (all wearing hats) abided by the house rule so would I. I decided to leave...this establishment is not the 21 Club but a low grade bistro. I decided to have lunch at this place with my sister and 6 month old baby, since they had outside seating and it was beautiful weather! There was no one outside, completely empty, so I went into to inform the wait staff that I wanted to sit outside and get menus. A guy approached me and I informed him I needed a table outside for two (2) and a baby. He looked at me confused and told me that I had to wait a moment so he could confirm. He asked for whom I assumed was the manager or owner to speak with me; this guy had the nerve to inform me that they do not allow strollers inside (which I completely understand), but that they also do not allow strollers in the outside seating area. Now I could understand if space was limited outside or if it were busy, but THERE WAS NO ONE SEATED OUTSIDE! I think this is completely ridiculous, they should basically say "NO BABIES/CHILDREN ALLOWED". I will never give this place my money, period. read more

We were considering having brunch here very early on a Sunday morning and were turned away rudely as we opened the door because "no strollers" are allowed. It was quite ridiculous considering that the place was almost entirely empty (only one table was occupied!) and it's a very casual spot on the upper east side.
