Being relatively new to the VB area, we decided to try a new (to us, anyway) local spot for dinner. Beach Pub didn't disappoint. Our server couldn't have been nicer as she walked us through the menu and made suggestions. On her (and Guy Fieri's) recommendation, we tried the Fish Hash, which was very good, and the Pepper Jack Pasta Salad was awesome! And everything was reasonably priced. My husband and I went while on our honeymoon because it was on diners, drive-ins,and dives. It was not what I expected. The menu wasn't vast, so I was somewhat forced to get the fried shrimp, which was alright but not great. My husband got the soft shell crab sandwich and he loved it. We also had the stuffed mushrooms, they were alright. The service was decent. Not outstanding but not bad. I probably wouldn't recommend this place as we've been to other places I liked better but we will probably end up going back for the soft shell crab. It's more of a meh restaurant for me. I was trying to find a non-chain restaurant that was inexpensive. The Jumbo Seafood Platter was great. The waitress was very friendly and nice about adding more shrimp since I dislike scampi and oysters. I had the garden salad and baked potato, that were good as well. I had come in late after driving through several hours of heavy traffic and wanted to get something to go. They quickly cooked the meal and made a salad and had me headed "home" in no time at all. Not sure, though if this was just our experience, but our waitress was TERRIBLE. Very slow to even ask to take our order. My family has been coming to this establishment for over five years, on Sunday nights, at least once a month. We enjoy the home-like atmosphere and are always very impressed with the staff. We all usually know what we're ordering before we walk in the door. With that being said, our last (and possibly final) visit occurred on what happened to be super bowl Sunday. The first thing we noticed after being seated was the new menus. Same format, but I could tell they were newly printed. We asked the waitress about it, and she kindly explained that because of the market price changes, some prices did increase and a few items were taken off the menu. My father and I have both spent enough time in the restaurant/bar industry to know that's to be expected, so we weren't deterred. My grandmother, on the other hand, didn't take the changes so well. Her immediate inspection noted that her Sunday night favorite entree, the bone-in pork chop plate, was gone. She almost always got the porkchop with a side of three bean salad and split a side salad with my dad. Well, the three bean was gone too (although this matters not to me, but since I'm writing on behalf of my family, she was very upset). So we asked our waitress (who is headed for sainthood for how well she dealt with my demanding family) about the porkchop. She said she would check with the kitchen staff because they may still have some left since the new menu had just debuted. She came right back and offered sincere apologies that they had none left. I thought my grandmother was going to go on hunger strike over it, but after a few minutes of mulling over the menu, she finally decided to get the crabcakes. The only other menu subtraction of note was the crablegs, again not something any of us ever got, so not a big deal. We had fast, friendly service. Since the place was almost empty, our waitress got to spend some time chatting with us and really helped my grandmother try to get over the shock of her favorite entree being taken off the menu. Like I said, she's headed for sainthood! I was a little disappointed that in subtracting menu items, there wasn't really a significant amount of new items added in place of them. I got the small sirloin, it was good, but not great, paired well with the cocktail sauce I decided to dip it in. I do question if the cut of meat was actually sirloin, but it wasn't a bad piece of meat. My dad's shrimp (as he says "No No No oldbay") were also on par with what we expect. Overall, I'm sad to see the menu changes , the price changes were to be expected. But if you want to "revamp" your menu, it's generally recommended to also add some new and enticing items to ease the burden of favorites being taken away. Ordered take out for convenience while visiting Virginia Beach as my dad wanted fried soft shelled crabs for dinner. Beach Pub was the only restaurant I found to have them on their menu. It was a big disappointment since it was featured on one of the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. My family ordered the fried oysters, fried soft shelled crab (fried) dinner, and fish and chips, and the crab stuff mushroom. No one was satisfied with their meals. I personally had the 12 count fried oyster with potato salad, and macaroni salad. The fried oysters were overly salty, and both the potato and macaroni salads were sub par. I couldn't even finish the 12 oysters because of how salty they were. On top of being salty they were dry. My dad told me the fried soft shelled crabs were overly salty as well. My mom had ordered a 6 count fried oyster, her friend oysters were half the size of mine and she had the same complaint that they were too salty. My wife said the fish in the fish in chips was seasoned well however the fish was overly dry. Price point, I was overall average. The fried oysters and soft shelled crab were listed as market price. For us it was 12 count fried oysters $21.99, 6 count fried oysters $13.99, and the soft shelled crabs were $19.99. I did see other restaurants with 3.5 and 4 stars having fried oysters for a few dollars cheaper. Don't know if it was a bad experience or what but my family and I will not be eating here again in future trips. read more

I've only been once- service was good, the fried clam strips were good, the pineapple was canned and when I ordered a piece of key lime pie to go, I made the mistake of not checking it before we left. Once home, I was excited to have dessert and found what appeared to be 1/4 of a normal piece of pie. If it was a $2 piece of pie that would have been fine but for $5 I would expect at least an average sized slice of pie. My husband and I went to Beach Pub for brunch as part of our quest to eat at as many DDD featured restaurants as we could while in Virginia Beach. If you're going to eat at Beach Pub, come hungry because the portions are enormous! I ordered a mimosa, which was, in my opinion, substandard. The food, however, was excellent. We ordered the Oysters Rockafeller as an appetizer. I could have eaten 3 plates of those and nothing else. Ithe oysters are served on a skillet with a lemon, and the waitress brought us some hot sauce (unnecessary because the flavor was perfect without it!) For entrees we got the softshell crab Benedict and a seafood omelette. The crab Benedict was delicious and perfectly cooked, although I liked the crab Benedict at Citrus (another DDD joint in this area) better. The seafood omelette was impressive as they didn't skimp on the seafood at all. I hate getting an omelette that's all eggs and filler, so this one was perfect for me. It was stuffed to the brim with scallops, crab meat and shrimp. Everything was delicious. The service was fast and waiters were friendly. The restaurant is old in in need of some updating - it wouldn't survive a Robert Irvine inspection on Restaurant Impossible. I had to change seats because an air vent on the ceiling was dripping on me. Despite that, it was pretty crowded, probably because of the food. Prices were very reasonable. I was super excited about trying this place. I am always looking for places that are featured on diners drive ins and dives. The reviews were also great. My husband and I were meeting some friends here. When we first pulled in we were a little skeptical about the outside appearance. But you can't judge a book by its cover. We arrived to the restaurant first. Went in to get a table. It was about 2 pm. Maybe 6 tables were seated. They had to clean a table for us. We finally sat. With us making the 7th table in their it took about 10 minutes before we got waited on. Finally when we did (our friends still hadn't arrived) I ordered a beer and my husband a sweet tea. 15 minutes later still no beer and sweet tea. Our friends finally joined us and two tables have left.... So 25 minutes it took to get one beer and one sweet tea. At that point we decided to go somewhere else. The inside of the restaurant was not clean and was kind of a disappointment from what we had read online. read more

We visited the Beach Pub for breakfast last Saturday morning, after not having been to the restaurant for probably two years. While the restaurant itself is largely unchanged --- still the basic diner it's been for 25+ years --- the food and waitstaff have gone considerably downhill from our earlier experiences over the years. Neither my wife nor I enjoyed our breakfasts --- my fried eggs were medium-sized eggs, hard as rocks and overly greasy (not butter, just grease), patty sausages were overcooked, the "famous" clam fritters were tasteless and also hard as rocks, and the grits had the consistency of instant and were served with margarine instead of butter. My wife's pancakes were heavy and overcooked, and her bacon serving seemed to be about 2 ounces-worth, and was also overcooked. I think we both had the impression that our breakfast choices --- including my eggs, and her pancakes --- had been prepared much earlier in the day, and microwaved before being served to us. Our server was a seasoned waitress, pleasant, but a little forgetful on our orders and on keeping the coffee cups full. And I think there were only 3 or 4 tables occupied when we were there; both the cook and our server should have had plenty of time to get our very straightforward order right, and get it prepared in a whole lot better fashion. Beach Pub has always been just a diner, but, in past years, attention to food preparation and table service were much better than we experienced during our recent visit. The food itself was the biggest disappointment --- I can't remember a recent time when I've had such poorly prepared basic diner food. My husband, 3-year-old, and I visited on a Friday night. We entered through the side and ended up in the bar area. We came on the recommendation of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. We did not have a reservation and were asked to wait a minute to be seated, which was perfectly acceptable. My first thought upon being seated in the far side of the restaurant was this was definitely not the area of the restauarant they would have shown on the TV show. The main seating area was considerably more bright. This was definitely a place where you might be scared to touch the underside of the tables. I can see why there are no photos of the place on their website. I was a little disappointed upon arriving, but hey, I figured it's a dive! I couldn't see having a large group of people comfortably seated here together. The bathrooms were really cramped. You have to wait in the bar area if both stalls are full, because if you waited in the bathroom there would be no room for the people in the stalls to get out and wash their hands. It might be better just to make the area into a single-serve bathroom. It's not ideal for little ones to wait in the bar for their turn in the bathroom - not quite family-friendly. My husband was looking forward to having the Jumbo Seafood Platter (shrimp, scallops, oysters, crab cake, flounder Clam Barco). He was disappointed. All of the items on the platter tasted like the bland flour they were breaded in. He says the fish was the best thing on the platter, a good generous size. My husband had the macaroni salad which the waitress promptly 'warned' was mustard-based. I guess this may be a problem for some, but hubby seemed to enjoy the homemade dish. I had the scallops (again same flour breading) and the market price was $17.99 that night. The scallops themselves were the perfect texture, but I found myself wishing for a bit more crunch in breading. The flour breading was soggy on the bottom of each scallop. I don't know if the plate was wet or if the scallops were 'sweating'. I did not try the tartar sauce as I chose the cocktail sauce. I must say it really disappoints when I get lightly dressed ketchup as 'cocktail sauce'. We both also had the pepperjack pasta salad - an interesting couscous salad with the cheese, beans, and capers. Probably my favorite thing of the evening. My son had the corndogs from the kids menu and ate everything but the breading, go figure. Maybe his breading wasn't up to par either. The price was under $50 for all of our meals (no alcohol or appetizers) which I find fair for seafood. The service was great - a nice balance of attentiveness and conversation. She was very sweet to our son. I hate to give a poor review and I am not an ambiance snob, but I was not impressed with the food either. I don't think we will make the effort to go back. read more

This used to be a favorite place to catch a good meal. What has happened is beyond me. The place is dirty, carpets so old and dirty, along with pieces of tile missing in many places in the dining area. Food came out without the entire meal being ready for presentation. French Dip was served with no au jus, and my companion had to get up to catch the servers attention in order to get the meal completed. Servers and bussers doing "side work" is not one of my things when I am trying to eat and all I hear is the slapping of the broom on the dustpan around my table, that's just nasty!! Our waitress even reached over the table to get the sugar caddie for refill, no "excuse me", no apology. Poor service, ho hum food, not the place it used to be or could be with a much needed makeover. Bring The Beach Pub back to life. read more

We are definitely going to be back here... again and again. The reason we first tried it out was because of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. It took me months to convince my husband to try it with me, but once we did, we were sold. It's laid-back, clean and the people are friendly. We tried the Fried Flounder sandwich, mine with fries and pickled beets, and his with fries and a couscous salad. We both loved our food. The amount of fish in that sandwich is phenomenal. We decided to go here because we had seen it on tv. The breakfast was very good. The best French toast I have ever had. Everyone in our party was satisfied. We came down to Virginia to spend the weekend with some friends. My husband wanted to go to Virginia Beach, so on a recommendation we came to the Beach Pub. We were 4 adults and 2 little ones under 2. We were seated right away. We browsed the menu, 2 of us had the fish and chips- which comes with fries and your choice of another side, friends hubby chose pasta salad, I had applesauce to share with my 10- month old. My hubby had the all you can eat flounder and my girlfriend had the rockfish sandwich. Everything got rave reviews. The portions were huge! The flounder looked like it was half the fish, the fish and chips came with 5 or 6 good size pieces of fish and ample fries, and the rockfish sammy looked yummy. The applesauce was not out of a jar. I'm pretty sure they make it there. Nice and chunky, not some purée. The tartar sauce and pasta salad were also homemade. 4 sodas and 4 entrees came to $60. It looked like we caught the tail end of the breakfast bunch. The place was full,- definitely regulars- but we only had to wait a couple of minutes for them to remove a couple of chairs from our table and replace them with high-chairs. If you are in the VA Beach area, I recommend this place! AND we found out when we got there that the Pub was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. My wife and I live in Richmond. Coincidentally, we had a trip planned to VA Beach, when we saw an episode on "Diner's, Drive-ins and Dives" that featured this restaurant. My wife (as usual) checked out the menu on line beforehand. She had decided on the crabmeat omelet (which included cheese), which was priced at $10.99 on the Beach Pub's website. Upon arrival at the restaurant, my wife noticed that the price on the printed menu given to us was $12.99. She asked if she could substitute mushrooms for the cheese. Food arrived at the table ice cold and...we were charged $14.99 for the omelet. When the waitress was asked, she said it was "considered an additional charge"...for the equivalent of three mushrooms that were delivered as part of a meal that was ice cold. Mr. Fieri, you were so wrong about this place. It is a restaurant that is jacking up it's prices while delivering crappy, substandard food and service because it was on your show. read more

Well, where do I start? The food was mediocre and the seating was uncomfortable. I also waited close to 45 for a cup of soup, which was mediocre as well. Not amazing but some good wings and mozzarella sticks. Says it is a seafood place but their best food is stuff I can make from a box. The staff was excellent and very kind to me and the party I was with. Not saying I will return back to the establishment but it was not bad for a Virginia Beach spot at 8 pm. Best seafood restaurant ever!!! I've had the best Rockefellar ever here at this restaurant! The flounder was great, and the sides were simply scrumptious!
