I was really excited to try Charlotte's legendary steak house that's been in business since 1958. I heard so many good things about this place, so I had to try it! What I loved: The atmosphere was charming, cozy and romantic. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. However the waiter forgot to ask if we wanted add ons to our steak. I would have gotten the blue cheese crumbles but he didn't ask so I forgot to ask. The crab dip was incredible. I loved the little toast that comes with it! Filet mignon was top notch!!! Tender and juicy with a crispy charred edge! I ordered my steak medium and it was perfectly pink, not red. Peanut butter pie was TO DIE FOR! What I didn't like: The sides were EXTREMELY underwhelming and bland. They hardly had any flavor and the ingredients seems to be poor quality. We tried: the red skinned garlic mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, mushrooms and asparagus. We didn't even eat the asparagus bc it had 0 flavoring, seasoning or sauce. We had super high hopes bc some of our friends had visited. We came for my husband's birthday which was on a Monday. The place is really nice. It was busy for a Monday. I made a last minute reservation and I'm Glad I did. The food was just ok. They serve you with cheese and crackers and bread before your food comes. You get a LOT of food. That's a plus ! Our server was great and very attentive. The food itself was just ok. The Mac was over cooked. They offered to bring me a different side, but I declined. I prefer my steak medium and it was cooked well done! Not for a ribeye even that was too much. They did remake it which I could appreciate. The steaks could have used more seasoning. Terrible on the management for not honoring the false marketing and the server who could have made more tip, had she not classified the prosecco as champagne (although it's listed as Sparkling wine). She was good otherwise when it came to food suggestions. The manager overheard us, but didn't take the initiative to come and rectify this. But above that I told the waitress prior to ordering I had a gift certificate and she said no problem . Then when the bill came, I said you need to take the hundred dollars off the bill. She said we don't accept gift certificates in December. I said well let me speak to the owner and he said we don't accept but let me see the certificate. I am all for supporting local restaurants. They have been around a long time. That being said they are resting on their laurels and past. They make sure to tell you the history and they hold the longest liquor license in North Carolina etc. my experience was very average. Way too many tables jammed into this space. I literally felt like the table next to me and behind me could be part of my party. The server was nice but not what I would expect at a high end restaurant. The pricing is high which is ok if the quality of the food matches. Everything we ordered was cooked correctly and came out on time. That being said, the steak had zero flavor and all of the other sides as well. I had high expectations and was so bummed that it was just average. "Food flicks" on the wall next to our table, we sat in a very cramped white room that felt more like a coat closet than fine dining, my wife's plate had a crack, food served was in aluminum foil (some how other restaurants serve hot food not in foil), served a basket of crackers in wrappers (like at a diner), coffee served with sugar packets soaked in spilt coffee, sides in odd metal bowls (looked like dog bowls), and my $19 cocktail had food debris on bottom. While the outside of the restaurant is the opposite of fancy, once you enter into the restaurant, it's like taking a step back in time. The vibe is very romantic. It was a perfect date night/birthday celebration. The service was spectacular. Our server never left us wanting for anything, and was very kind and attentive. The steaks were all cooked perfectly. I have lived in Charlotte for 16 years and had never ate at this Local landmark. If your dumb enough to judge this place by the outside of the building then you don't deserve to dine here. As our waiter said, this place is a Time Machine. The oldest liquor license in all of Charlotte. I brought three coworkers from out of town, and they didn't know what to expect when we walked in. To start with I enjoyed the very simple cheese and crackers that were served complementary at the beginning of the meal. All four of us found something on the menu that was right up our alley. I ordered the fillet (med-rare) and scallops cooked scampi style and for my sides I got creamed, spinach, and Redskin garlic, mashed potatoes. My other coworker got the grilled scallops with asparagus and a salad, another got the grilled shrimp and scallops and the third got a fillet. The scallops were large and cooked to perfection. Beef & Bottle Steakhouse 4538 South Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28209 2 Stars This ramshackle dump is an impoverished man's Bern's Steakhouse but with exceedingly bad steaks. The lighting in this place is so bad you truly can't see what you are consuming. This turned out to be a good thing in the end. David is the server this evening; while he wasn't bad, he wasn't anything special. He was adequate but not award-winning. I put in an order for some Frog legs, fried oysters and their NY strip. The reviews for this place were incredible. I was expecting to eat what was referred to as "consistently being the best steaks in the USA!" Instead, I walked into a cool kitsch time capsule with Sysco's worst. If you sit someone my age in a room dark enough to make a vampire feel right at home, we all know what will happen. Thankfully, I had a companion, so I did not take a quick nap. If anything, I was resting my eyes for a bit. Fortuitously, David returned with our order about then. Looking at the pics, you will see that everything looked as good as the reviews. First up on the Big Boy's discerning palate was the Cuisses de Grenouille (Frog legs). Long known as a national delicacy of French cuisine and a local one of the Deep South, I eagerly dug into my order and came up short. These must have come from the bottom of the food service box as they tasted like they were severally freezer-burned. Strike one. Happily moving on to the fried oysters. I picked one up, hoping the frog legs were a one-off. My hopes came crashing down as these were not cooked properly. Perhaps they were made ahead of time and kept chilled, then dumped in oil for a few seconds to reheat them. However, they were reheated, and it was obvious by the texture of the coating that they were not made to order. Strike Two. Turning to the NY Strip, I was beginning to think either those reviews I read were not authentic, the person writing them somehow lost their sense of taste, or friends and family wrote them. While my steak was, surprise, surprise, cooked properly, it was of such low grade I'm not sure a USDA Inspector would classify it as Choice, let alone Prime. The steak was so tough; I would wager even a discalced human coming off of a strict 40-day fast wouldn't eat it. I would even go so far as to lay dollars to donuts the local prison unloaded their Sunday leftovers. Strike Three. The Big Boy says, "They will say mean things about me or claim it was an off day. This is the first time I've found Yelp to be wrong! How does this amazing place only have 3.5 stars? I was skeptical to eat here because of the low rating, but my friend insisted that we try it because it was rated as the #1 steakhouse in North Carolina by USA Today. The valet guys parking our cars at the Ritz Carlton said it's their favorite place in town. This place first opened in 1959 and does look like a dive, but it has old world charm. There are framed black and white photos of old movie stars on the walls. The back part of the restaurant used to be an outdoor patio that is now enclosed. Seating is by reservation only. The only thing available for our party of 6 was at 4:30. I'm so glad we went! I ordered the Trio Medallions: 3 perfectly cooked (medium rare) 3 ox pieces of filet with different toppings. I loved all of them: red wine butter, blue cheese crumbles, and horseradish crust. The sides were generous. I chose mashed potatoes and the French onion soup. The French onion soup was one of the specials that was included as a side. It was covered with melty cheese and full of crusty bread and onions. That alone could have been a meal! Service was over the top fantastic. I unfortunately had to leave the dinner party early to go to a conference. Our server gave my husband a slice of chocolate cake for me! I went Wednesday for my wife's birthday, I was so excited to finally go to this restaurant, it has such an amazing history and reputation as being one of the best restaurants in Charlotte. Sadly the night was a flop. After we were seated by the hostess, who was no more than 8 feet away from us. No one came to check on us, not a bartender, manager or a waiter. It was over 10 minutes before a bus boy came by and asked if anybody had actually come by to see us. Meanwhile, people were seated around us and had already received drinks. Finally a waiter came by stating he was just told, and it is his attempts to solve the problem that I didn't give a 1 star review. But understanding this was terrible start, the hostess or manager didn't come over and apologize or make any attempts to fix the problem just this waiter. For a restaurant with 50+ years of experience I really expected more, this was the service I expected at some chain or brand new restaurant not the legendary Beef and Bottle. The review is mostly for the terrible hosting and lack of correction, the waiter deserves a raise, but the food...not for nothing it was ok, not bad but certainly not worth the cost. It took 2 hrs from when we came in to when we were able to get the check, and the business was closed by the time we left. I have been to a dozen of steak houses in the Greater Charlotte region and this is the first one I will not go back to. When a restaurant brags about how good their service, experience and food is you do not get much leeway. Again, the only reason the review is not one star is because of the exemplary service by the waiter. read more

I can finally say I've tried THE Beef & Bottle! It's Charlotte's oldest steakhouse and opened in 1958. The moment you walk in, you are transported back in time. First things I noticed was all the wood paneling, black and white photos adorning the walls and also the fact that my reservation was confirmed via a physical book - penciled in for the time! Please tell me the last time you've seen that? It's located off South Blvd and was absolutely packed when we came for a 8:30pm reservation on a Thursday. You start off with a cheese spread that was so nostalgic. Reminded me of a thicker version of that cheese you would spray out of the can! You dip your saltine in there and savor the goodness. With your entree comes their famous house salads! You get a whole platter of toppings! It's like build your own salad and all the dressings are made from scratch. We ordered steaks of course which come with a large onion ring on top! They were delicious and perfectly grilled. I got a baked potato on the side and my husband got the mashed potatoes. Lastly, we had to get dessert and chose the chocolate lovin spoonful cake which is for serious chocolate lovers only! Probably one of my favorite places to take people for birthdays and special occasions, Charlotte is very luckily to have Beef 'N Bottle (B N B) as a part of its food scene. With all the construction going on in Charlotte, you can easily drive by the B N B and not have a clue about the magic that goes on here. The tiny, unassuming building has probably seen a fresh coat of paint, but not that much has changed in the years they have been opened - This is really part of the charm of this place. In a world of steakhouses and new, modern architecture, it's nice to know that once you do something well, that reputation won't fail you. I can't remember if they still participate in Restaurant Week or not, but I recommend not going (during RW) due to the shear volume of people trying to go and take advantage. Don't get me wrong, I think its a great experience, but one should just experience the restaurant in all its glory just one time in their lives (in my opinion). They actually seem to do well on their own since their long time operations and continued regulars. Anyways- I highly recommend making a reservation (easily done on OpenTable), but you can also call it in and be added to an old-skool, non-computer reservation book (look for it when you go by the host stand at the door). Wood paneling and black & white photos adorn the walls. If you haven't been there before it can be a bit sensory overload between the nostalgia and just the apparent time machine you just stepped into (in a good way). Their dining room is tiny, but there have been additions... my favorite is to sit in a booth in the front dining room - also because there is talk that the middle room is "haunted." Their servers are unique, and really do take care of you. On our last visit, Victor, really took care of us making sure we had a great dinning experience. Even though we had been there before, he actually gave us a really good explanation of the specials for the night and how the menu works. I didn't realize you can add a lobster tail to anything on the menu! Victor also told us that they were out of the shrimp cocktail, which was a bummer, but he explained that the kitchen/chef wasn't happy with the quality of the shrimp that week. We started our adventure with drinks and a dozen oysters. The oysters were gi-normous and the cocktail sauce is pre-horasdish-ed (add to your own discretion) but it's pretty amazing. I ended up getting the 6oz filet with crab cake combo that comes with a side: mashed potatoes and salad (you can also sub your salad for another side!). SO DELICIOUS. I recommend getting different things than your friends/loved ones so that you can share. My med-rare filet was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. [Veteran tip: when you are done with your salad, make sure to keep the dressing at the table for all the dipping of subsequent food that will get to the table later] On a Thursday night, the parking lot was packed! When I first visited my folks in 2017, we drove past Beef 'N Bottle and I noticed it looked unassuming on the outside. Dad mentioned that he heard good things about it and said we should go some day. My gut told me it had more to it than the exterior said - usually the good places look like nothing on the outside but once you get inside and try the food, it's amazing. Fast forward to 2021, my folks booked a reservation at last to try it around Thanksgiving time. It's best to do a reservation and try to get there on time or a little early. They seem to have a good amount of parking in the back, along with some spots in the front of the building facing the road. We had no trouble finding a spot for our reservation around 5:20 PM. The interior has that old school vibe with the candle-lit dining room, Hollywood star black and white photos, and waiters in formal attire. We were seated once the host checked us in and someone brought glasses of water over. Our waiter came shortly after that and shared the specials of the day, before giving us a chance to look over the menus. I went with one of the specials, which was their petit filet mignon and blackened mahi mahi, plus two sides of your choice. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and had a good suggestion for a wine that would pair well with my dad's order. He brought a sampler for my dad to try and once Dad approved of it, he produced the wine bottle from his apron pocket and poured more into it. (Talk about prepared!) Food came pretty quickly - I didn't have much time to enjoy the crackers with cheese spread before we got the toppings for the baked potatoes, then the actual steak meals. But the spread was good - reminded me of the port wine cheese spread I used to buy at the supermarket for party events. Steak was tender - melted in your mouth and flavorful. The blackening spice on the mahi mahi was perfect and the fish was cooked beautifully. I had nothing left over in terms of my mains. Potato was perfect and a good size for my entree. I did try the mac and cheese, but it was a little one-note. Desserts were the chocolate cake and the Key lime pie. Chocolate cake was very, very rich but delicious. Key lime pie was a good consistency, but a little less tart than I like. It is not cheap, but I think this is more of a restaurant you go to for special occasions. Was on a work trip to Charlotte and stopped by for dinner at the B & B as it was just 25 mins from my hotel. This place is a classic old school throwback steakhouse...which I personally love. It has the feel of old school steakhouse when you walk in...I ended up eating in the bar which is first come first served. It was a Wednesday night and they were busy...it seems like the staff was a little light as it took a while to get an order in...but I went with the small filet, baked potato and house side salad. Instead of bread they serve a portion of what I think was pimento cheese that you can spread on cracker packets at the table...I have never seen this before but the cheese was good. The salad came out and they put all of the veggies (sans lettuce) on the side...also different but I liked it as well. Finally the steak and potato was served...steak was tender but could have used a bit more seasoning -- and the baked potato was just that...fully loaded. We get to our table and sit for 10 mins. Finally another server arrives who is working other tables to get us drinks and let us know he would find our server. 2 or 3 minutes later our server arrives. We eventually order our food. My wife had the 6 oz filet and I order the fish of the day, Mahi. We both got a salad. The salads were fine, nothing spectacular but fine. My wife's steak was good, not the best steak ever, but good. My Mahi was disappointing. The seasoning was good but it seemed a little too "rubbery". We were full from our salads and entrees but the server offered us desert complimentary since it was our anniversary. So, we ordered the apple pie with cinnamon ice cream which was good. Unfortunately the bill arrived and we were charged for it. The server said we didn't order the desert that is "complimentary". We weren't even planning to order desert and told the server this but when she said it was complimentary we said let's see what you have. What a joke. She did take it off. When we received the bill, the Mahi Mahi I ordered was $69. That's not a typo. I can get mahi mahi at a family restaurant for $25. Not thinking it should be $25 at this restaurant but $69? Come on. I'll start out by saying I'm not a steakhouse person. If I'm going to spend that kind of money, a steakhouse isn't my choice of restaurant. We wanted to try this place though since it's a long time Charlotte restaurant and more modest. They start you with complimentary crackers and cheese spread. The cheese spread took me back to elementary school and the cheese dip that comes with the bread sticks in lunchables. We got a ribeye and a filet and scampi combo for our entrees. For sides we both got salads and then a creamed spinach and a loaded mashed potato. The salads are served BYO with a plate of veggies. The dressing is house made and delicious (blue cheese was amazing). Use the leftover dressing as a dip for the leftover veggies. I liked the filet. The ribeye was good, but it had a lot of tendons so it was hard to chew. The creamed spinach was good and went great with the buttery bread that was served. I really enjoyed the garlic mashed potatoes. I wasn't a huge fan of the scampi, but it wasn't bad. We enjoyed our meal, but like other steakhouses, it wouldn't be my choice for a nice night out. read more

Over this past weekend, my wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Beef N Bottle Steakhouse. Since moving to the Carolinas, we have almost always enjoyed this day visiting 131 Main. We had high expectations for Beef N Bottle, and we looked for the positive parts of the experience, but unfortunately it was disappointing. We did not expect much in ambiance, it has a hole in the wall reputation which are often some of the best places to eat. It started when they placed crackers on the table, opposed to fresh bread, but OK that is their thing. The server was polite, but we rarely spoke with him as he did not visit our table much. The appetizer was a spinach dip, unfortunately the toast points they served it with overwhelmed the spinach. We ordered 4 side dishes; the mac and cheese were so over cooked in was mush in your mouth. We ordered the fillet and the ribeye, both of which were served in a bath of oil. The meat was no better than a steak that you would purchase at Costco (who happens to have good quality meat). However, we chose this restaurant because my wife loves prime rib and it looked like this spot had a great one. My wife ordered the prime rib and our server (thankfully) informed us that the prime rib had been overcooked that day and he would not recommend ordering it. She then chose the filet which was great but my NY strip was very sub par. This was on a Friday night so I'm assuming they had their "A" team cooking in the back. Maybe they were just having an off night but we left feeling very disappointed. read more
