I love the deep dish crust! We were in town for a weekend getaway and stopped in due to our bus driver's recommendation. We ordered a couple beers and a deep dish pepperoni pizza. Excellent flavor, plenty of cheese, and amazing crust! I highly recommend and will definitely stop back next time I'm in Chicago. The pizza is decent. It can be a little salty but the cooks are generous with the cheese and the sausage/pepperoni. I can't comment on the other dishes because I've only eaten the pizza. I rate the pizza 3 stars. The service is terrible. It's difficult to get the attention of the waitstaff even when the restaurant it's not busy. On my last visit I got tired of waiting to be served and ordered my slices at the to-go counter. The woman seated across from me waited patiently for a server to stop by her table which took about 20 minutes. I was almost done with my food and my table-neighbor was just getting a menu. She's still waiting for someone to take her order while I type this review and prepare to leave. There are 3 servers chatting behind the bar and only 6 occupied tables. They have the best pizza in Chicago because they lay the cheese and sausage on thick. The only bad things about the store on Clinton is that at lunchtime there is only one person at the register so you stand in line waiting while your pizza gets cold. Now I wouldn't mind if everyone inside was busy, but a few of them are standing around talking and laughing and doing nothing when they could be taking care of the other cash register! Another thing that gets on my nerves is the bathroom door SLAMMING and SLAMMING and SLAMMING - why doesn't the Management get it fixed so you don't have to keep hearing it SLAM while you sit eating your pizza? Just ordered a delivery for my team at work todayand it was on time and the pizza wasn't cold! I'm tired of eating Lou's and Giordano's so I made them try Beggar's. We ordered 3 thin crust pizzas - cheese, 1/2 sausage and 1/2 pepperoni, and veggie. The meat pizza was packed with meat which can be overwhelming but it was still yummy. We weren't impressed w/ the veggie though. They had coupons online so definitely take advantage of 'em. You can use 1 coupon/pizza and it works for delivery orders too. I don't really like to write harsh reviews - but particularly after my most recent visit with a 45 minute wait for a really bad sandwich, I have to say you just need to STAY away. Beer selection is mediocre. Service is REALLY poor. Lobby was dirty, unkept, harshly lit. Has no ambiance at all. Did I mention the service? Three requests for WATER. Five minutes to get the menu, ten minutes before they came back for an order, thirty minutes for my sandwich...which tasted like it had been sitting for an hour and made on five day old bread. The person with me had similarly bad luck with their entree. Good thing we were in a good mood otherwise it would have been a really miserable night. There are much much better places in this area. Heck, the restaurants IN Union Station beat this place. Just stay away. read more

I've heard about Beggars for years and when they were fixing up the space on Clinton I knew we'd eventually try it. We got a pizza there last weekend and I was really pleased with it. The pizza is thin crust, not cracker thin. They put on googabs of toppings, cheese, great sausage, fresh mushrooms and it is hefty. My taste in pizza has changed over the years to wanting thin crust with just enough toppings. However, the flavors blended so well together with the sauce and sausage it tasted wonderful so lots of toppings here were excellent. We always order the largest size pizza available, which we did here. I would say you could order a size smaller then you normally do because the amount of toppings actually make this pizza a meal. I normally scarf down pizza slice after slice like its my last meal on earth, however, I was done in after 2 or 3 slices of this pizza. We had left overs for 2 or 3 lunches. read more

Beggars Pizza is actually one of my favorite pizzas of all time. However, this particular location is franchised. I grew up on the original in Blue Island which is an automatic 5-5 to me every time i ate there. I feel like the quality isn't up to par in comparison to the other locations. On the other hand, this is the only beggars I can order from since i moved from the suburbs to the city, so I deal with it. Despite this, The pizza here is actually still great despite the service. The way the ingredients and cheese are piled on the pizza is fantastic. No joke the pizzas way a ton and puts most all other pizzas to shame! The cheese is good and especially the sauce is just great. I personally love their basic sausage pizza or getting the supreme is the way I go. For me ordering more fun ingredients like pineapple and Canadian bacon just doesn't work for me with this pizza. There deep dish is good as well but comes second in my mind to the thin crust. But the crust is amazing on the deep dish. The portions are decently sized. I however, do wish they had a larger size then family. I really enjoy the mostacolli, there sauce really makes it. Every time i order it I am usually waiting for an hour an a half and its usually warm. I did receive it once piping hot to be fair but its not always the case. Plus they are a little pricey but the amount of ingredients they pile on kind of makes up for that. They have coupons on there website for a few bucks off too. I personally highly recommend the pizza here. Its thousands of times better than fast pizza joints and is still a huge leap from other small pizza chains in overall flavor and toppings. read more

I lived in Chicago 20 years before leaving to join the military. I recently went home on vacation to visit family. While there, I stopped at Beggars Pizza's fairly new downtown location. I have to say I was very impressed. Beggars has come a long way from it's original location in Blue Island. It was a great experience. The décor is amazing, the food was great as it's always been, it's affordable, and the staff was very friendly and professional. I had a really good time. It's nice to come home and have something so small as a slice of pizza and a beer to look forward to! I can't wait to visit home again so I can go back there. Keep up the good work Beggars. This is close to my work, and they sell slices. And there's a bar. The thin slices are yummy, good oregano in the sauce, nice amount of cheese, the sausage is tasty. The deep dish is kinda gross. The crust looked like it was made out of cornmeal, not just dusted with it. It's definitely VERY different than the thin. Seriously, the crust is a dark orangey-yellow. And sweet. Stick with the thin. The staff is really friendly. Also there's a bar which seems a little odd, not a destination type bar, but if you're waiting for hubby to get done with work, it's not a mad house like Dylan's down the street. read more

Went to Beggars last night with a group of friends, 9 of us total and were about to be seated right away. You could tell they were understaffed because the delivery driver is the one who greeted and seated us but that was fine, it didn't matter to us who seated us. The first thing I noticed was that the dining room was a great size and there were 4 other tables with people eating so it was not packed but moderately busy. Within a few minutes of us being seated our waitress, Brittany, came to get our drink order, we got there a few minutes before the rest of the group and by the time they got there we were just getting our drinks. We ended up ordering 3 appetizers and 4 pizzas between the group of us, and while I will admit service was a touch slow we liked everything that we ate the pizzas were awesome, loaded with toppings yet the crust was crunchy and held up well to them. The Nachos have freshly made tortilla chips and lots of toppings and were very good, they just need to lay off on the black olives and Jalapenos, they were definitely overloaded with them. We also ordered the banana pudding for dessert it is a huge bummer, fake banana flavoring reminiscent of a banana laffy taffy and just one sad nilla wafer on top and a few on the bottom. The really need to grab a nilla wafers box and implement that recipe, it is 100 times better and is what banana pudding should taste like! We then decided to try the cookie pizza for dessert, this thing is huge and 1 is plenty for 9 people. we ordered 2 and took almost a whole one home! I think they were slightly undercooked but even still they were gooey, chewy and delicious. I honestly don't understand why they do not serve it with ice cream or whipped cream on top. Note to the owners: Get some ice cream, whipped cream and cherries for the cookie pizza, it will elevate it to new levels and people will order it like crazy! Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be back as the food was great and our server, Brittany, was too. She was friendly and thorough and seemed to genuinely like her job! read more

While the pizza was okay, the service was not. We order shortly after 11:00 AM for our office. The quoted delivery time was 12:50 PM for 1 deep dish, 2 other pizza, a large salad and two 2-Liters is soda. When there was no sign or word of the deliver person at 1:05 pm, we called for a status update. I was immediately put on hold. When they came back to speak with me, they needed to put me on hold again. I was told that the pizza was out for delivery and would be there within 10 minutes. I work with this Beggars location for several networking events each month in the western part of the Loop, and they are awesome! I love that I can order online in advance. I always order at least 4 hours ahead since I'm ordering 10+ pizzas. The best part is that I can order and not worry about it until they show up. Every single deliver has been spot-on on time. Drivers always call me when they arrive and help me carry the pizza up to the offices. At other places I've ordered from, the drivers would call to complian that there's no parking (it's the loop!), wouldn't get out of the car, and didn't want to carry pizzas up. Beggar's drivers have all been very nice and professional. I highly recommend this Beggars pizza. They are professional, very nice and I've had great experiences ordering big deliveries from them multiple times a month! read more

Went here for lunch a couple weeks ago, weary of the bad reviews. I had deep dish cheese pizza and it was not bad. It could have been more melt-y but I attribute it to us going towards the end of the lunch rush. The atmosphere is a cool place for lunch, kind of dark but not dark like an old pub, but not bright like a sterile cafeteria. We've been eyeing this place for months, wondering when it'll finally open. Today was the day! And MAN, do they know how to open a business! I've got to hand it to the management, they anticipated a crowd on their opening day and they sure got one. But they sure did have enough people on hand. Within 30 seconds of getting into line I had placed my order for a thin crust slice of pepperoni magic. About 30 seconds later, I was standing next to a register with an eager cashier trying to get customers through as quickly as possible. It was awesome. The line went so quickly! It did seem that if you had to order a whole pizza or anything special there was a wait, but if you wanted something already prepared, no problem. So how was the pizza? Pretty good. I was quite happy with it. Now, mind you, I'm a snob with pizza and I don't think this was the best in the world, but I enjoyed it. To be honest, I would give the pizza itself 3 1/4 stars (kinda like Star Search!), but I live only two blocks from here and I really really want new businesses in my 'hood to succeed, so I'm bumping them up to 4 stars on account of that and their effective management. The cheese is an intoxicating mound of perfectly melted good sitting atop a bed of tasty sauce. Heard about these guys through a friend and walked over to check it out. Very decent deep dish pizza. I had their pepperoni and sausage deep dish by the slice. A little pricey but worth it. It was stuffed, super filling. I ordered 2 thinking I was gonna finish them off and it wasn't long before I wished I had only ordered 1, that's how filling they were. The sauce was sort of sweet but savory, with an oregano taste to it that was totally awesome. The crust was delicious, Chicago deep dish style. And the pizza was full of cheese, I was surprised to see that much cheese on a pizza. Their staff was super friendly, and the establishment was pretty decent, nothing fancy, but enough to keep an Italian happy. Yes, it's a pizza place and we should of had that. This was for the kids, chicken strips and fries $8+ for for strips and fries. The put it in a plastic container and it made the fries soggy and slimy, the chicken was dry and over cooked. Food was greasy and it seemed like the oil was not fresh. Beggars for when you're beggin' for deep dish. My boyfriend and I were watching some anime and trying to decide what to eat. After a long day of work, ballet and rehearsal, we decided we wanted to have some pizza. I'm so glad he enjoys deep dish as much as I do (because most people in Chicago HATE it - sad face). The pizza was phenomenal, got there at a reasonable time, well priced. The only reason why I couldn't give it a 5-star is because it was missing its... je ne sais WHAT! It doesn't come close to Giordano pizza, but it is a total worthwhile based on prices and service. We got it for delivery, and I can only imagine how much longer it would've taken the pizza chain to get to me. Glad we did this. We ordered a large and had it for a couple of nights in a row. I had an hour to kill before my train to the burbs at Union Station on a sleepy Sunday late afternoon in the city. Peckish and dinner time, I wanted to find a place very close by, oh, and open. Very little is, in fact, open on a Sunday evening so I was happy to find Beggars Pizza. Beggars has a nice menu with quite a variety and a full bar. The staff was very nice and accommodating. I wanted to move tables. No problem! I needed a place to charge my laptop. Sure, right over here! The servers I dealt with were very nice and helpful. Great service. Although I'm in Chicago, I am a thin crust pizza kind of guy. I ordered the thin crust pizza and while the crust is thin, the pizza is not! They pile on the toppings! I can't say that it was my favorite pizza every but i really did enjoy it. I also enjoyed a glass or two of a nice but unremarkable pinot noir. If you want a pleasant bite near Union Station, sure, go here. The interior is nice enough -- a bit fast food decor but OK. It does have outdoor dining, but not exactly in a charming location. Met my friend here on a Monday evening. As expected, it was a pretty slow night...which is why I didnt understand why no one was available to greet and seat us when we walked in. I was a bit confused as to whether there was a hostess or not. We ended up seating ourselves and flagging down a busboy on his way to the restroom to get us some help. The pizza came out pretty quick and was as delicious like Beggars is supposed to be. Call me weird, but I eat fries with EVERYTHING so I ordered a side of those as well. They were cold, overcooked and hard. YUCK. But hey, I guess you cant expect Beggars to produce McDonald quality fries. Metered street parking is available and wasnt too much of hassle for me. First of, they got the order wrong and when I called the manager (today), he said that he could deliver the correct pizza in 45 minutes and not to touch the pizza they had delivered. Gross!!! I believe as a courtesty he should have just let us keep both because they messed up. Or course, we were NOT going to wait another 45 minutes. We kept rubbery food and ate the pizza which was not of great quality. It was really tough to swallow. Will not be ordering from this place again. I noticed many people had problems with the service, but I ordered delivery so I can't really comment on that. My coworkers order the thin crust all the time for lunch events and every time I've had it it's been good. The thin crust tastes like many other places' thin crust. That's not really a bad thing nor is it good. It doesn't stand out to me really, but I'm sure it'll still hit that greasy pizza craving that most people get. I've had several toppings: pepperoni, sausage, veggie, and cheese. None of them were bad. I love trying new deep dish places around Chicago, so naturally I ended up ordering the deep dish with sausage at Beggars. I'll say that the deep dish is more unique than their thin crust. I really liked that they put a bunch of red sauce on the top of the pizza. A lot of deep dish pizzas skimp on the red sauce which honestly makes the pizza lose a lot of potential flavor. The sausage was good. They give you pretty big chunks of it. The best part, in my opinion, is the crust. It had a yeasty flavor to it which made it stand out to me and added bonus flavor. It didn't feel like I was eating bland crust. When I got to the crusts of the pizza, I actually looked forward to eating them. I wouldn't mind eating a Beggars deep dish pizza again. Would I go back there instead of trying a new pizza joint? Probably not. Would I order from there again because it's the only deep dish place open at the time? Heck yeah. read more
