We spoke with three moving companies and had two of them come out to assess our move. We were moving from a two bedroom condo in San Jose to a four bedroom house in South San Jose (10 miles apart). I was impressed by the professionalism of the woman that came out to assess our moving situation. She walked us through the process, took an inventory, and printed out a report for us right in our living room. No pressure at all but very helpful and informative. We called shortly after and set up our moving date. We had one 40 foot truck and three movers assigned. We weren't quite packed all the way when they showed up but they helped where they could while we packed up the rest. They even stopped by a small storage unit nearby and loaded that up too. The only issue that I had was that we still had a few items left over that we later moved on our own since there was no room left on the truck. The movers did offer to go back and pick it up but we didn't have time in our schedule to do so. The great thing about these moving companies is that they provide estimates stating that the work shall not exceed the estimate given and if we had asked them to go back and pick it up there would be no additional cost over what we had already agreed. read more

When looking to move from California to Pennsylvania I searched everywhere and got dozens of quote. After finding a company I already decided to go with I was still getting calls from moving companies about their quotes. A man from AMS Relocation Inc called me back about a quote from the number (928) 600-0366, and I told him I've already decided on my moving options. As usual, he asked what I decided on, which gets pretty obnoxious after 20 different explanations to different moving companies... so, I responded nicely "why does it matter?" and I was then told " I don't even know you, you fucking bitch!" Breach Of Contract. Bekins charged me $2,100 to defer delivery of my household goods 6 days while I had a floor installed in a new home. (The whole move cost more than $21,000.) They then "forgot" to deliver all the items meant for the rooms needing the new floor --about 1/3rd of the shipment-- and did not deliver for another eighteen days. They propose compensation of $300, which is an insult. The delivery personnel were rude and attempted to coerce me into signing for of boxes that couldn't be located. Packing was terrible: a stainless espresso machine labeled "Plastic Ware", woodworking planes labeled "Dog Food", and dozens of expensive chisels thrown in a box unwrapped. They destroyed a Sleep Number mattress and tried to hide the damage. They threw the key to a harpsichord into the instrument and then jammed the lock shut, requiring a locksmith. The list goes on and on. If you value your possessions, your time, and your dignity, sanity and money you will not engage this abusive firm. read more

Couldn't be happier with Bekins. We had a last minute move situation, and we'd never moved in a fashion that required movers before. So we didn't know what to expect. But Bekins showed up on time, did all the hard work and heavy lifting, and was extremely organized throughout. Moved my parents from San Jose, CA to Phoenix, Az. AMS Bekins gave them boxes to help pack and even packed several rooms for them. The quote was competitive and their estimate was pretty close. They filled an entire 50' trailer which the movers has skillfully packed like a tetris puzzle. Nothing the movers had packed broke and they were on time, friendly and extremely professional . The actual weight of the truck was 4000 lbs less than the estimate and they were refunded difference. These guys were fair and honest while doing an incredible job (even helping move some things that weren't being loaded on the truck for us). The driver and crews were on time (actually a little early) on packing day, load day and even the delivery day. In short, a large household move went far better than expected in large part due to the services of AMS Bekins. We would definitely recommend their services to anyone. read more

We have used them a couple of times - most recently on our cross country move from Burlingame to FL. The move went extremely well. In fact, I can't imagine it being better than it was. I recently moved from San Jose to the Clovis area. When the representative came to my home to give me an estimate he was very professional and went over all the details with me. Bekins was able to keep my household items in storage for 2 months free as I waited on the closing of my new home. My home was packed up in a day in May and unpacked in July, also in a day. The crew that packed and unpacked didn't waste any time and were courteous and friendly. Moving furniture in, my kitchen flooring was damaged, which Begins, Mike Foster, took care of immediately. Absolutely horrible company. Our move has been a nightmare. I'm surprised by the prior positive reviews. We were moving from California to Pennsylvania. This company held all of our stuff for 3 weeks in California before even beginning to move our belongings. We ended up staying in an empty house waiting for them to show up. When dealing with AMS Bekins, all they could tell us was to talk with their "corporate" office which did nothing to either explain why they hadn't moved our belongings and when exactly it would arrive. This moving company is great if you like damaged goods, calls that are not returned, missed moving dates, and having promises and bids not honored. The Bekins estimator significantly underbid our move (seemingly to sell the job), and the front office largely ignored our concerns and complaints. Their estimates were equal to, not significantly above or below, two other national moving companies. Unfortunately, after securing the contract for our move, Bekins didn't live within their written terms. We had several items broken due to careless packing and shipment and they failed to standby contracted storage costs of shipped goods until we noted the error. They also failed to respond in a timely manner on numerous occasions around issues of agreed move in timing, and property damage. We were charged for three trucks when they only showed up with two trucks. We were charged extra for additional weight and then the driver confided that they did not even weigh the truck! None of our concerns have been addressed. There is so much competition outq there, that there is no reason to ever trust your prized possessions to a moving company of this low caliber. read more

Have never written a negative review so please consider if I am doing this I have reflected on it for quite some time. I'm still shocked at the service I received from this company. When scheduling initially I received two different quotes. My first quote was significantly lower even though I had much more to move; needed items packed; received a second quote after doing significant purging I had gotten rid of many of my items. After some persistence the quote was adjusted to match the original quote. (You think it would've been lower) When the moving crew arrived at my residence; they took multiple long breaks even though it was a relatively quick move. Was lots of time spent on the truck, listening to the radio and talking on the phone about personal matters. They innaccurately added multiple hours to the move, could not locate many of my items, and the inventory of items was not matching up. I attempted to reach Office management multiple times and nobody was available. The foreman refused to assist me in reaching anybody even though I requested that he ask a manager to come out to the move to document my missing items. During my move oil and grease was tracked throughout my home damaging some of my items. I immediately reported to this to the company and was told simply to file a claim. On the same day of my move while the movers were here I emailed that some of my boxes and items are missing and the movers couldn't find some of the things they remembered packing. (The same company had packed me up for my move ironically) I was told once again simply to file a claim. I followed up repeatedly and I was put off for a few weeks being told nobody was available to search the warehouse and just to keep looking for my items. I found this very interesting because one the movers remembered packing some of the items himself but admitted he couldn't find them. Once again I was told to file a claim. I paid extra to have moving insurance. I assumed because this was a four diamond company there wouldn't be problems but if there were this would be honored appropriately and that I didn't need to photograph every dish that was packed every coffee cup, every video game, etc. The movers actually suggested I not even be in the area while they were packing for safety reasons. I should have. Upon arrival to my new residence there were multiple missing items. I Asked the crew to stay to help try to locate my items including the ones that did not match up on the inventory and they refused to do so.(at least the foreman on the job) as they did the majority of the packing and labeling of the boxes they should have been able to assist with locating the items that they packed. Unfortunately boxes were not even labeled properly. Bottom line is several of my items were missing and several were damaged. I have children that lost all of their electronic equipment. I found that quite interesting that entire box of all electronics would be missing. I am missing shelves to bookcases that are no longer of use. I have a chair that is destroyed (I have original pictures prior to the move showing it in good condition) The same thing with the lamp that was missing; foreman said it was probably in the box marked lamp and I tried to communicate that was impossible because it was a floor lamp and not tall enough; he told me to search the other boxes in the garage that it might be in there. Keep in mind that there wasn't a box labeled lamp in garage and I am extremely disabled and couldn't move the boxes myself. I kept contacting the company and was basically told to keep looking and file a claim. The very day these things happened I took photographs of the damage; the footprints were huge and clearly not mine I am 5 foot two. I was told to file a claim, however they never honored the claim. My daughter had a hanging unit for her bedroom. They actually taped it to a toybox. While the mover was moving it in he banged the unit against the wall and actually broke the hooks off; I pointed it out to him and he laughed and told me to get superglue! In addition the claims process was a nightmare I must've spent 80 hours getting pictures together documenting everything looking up quotes, getting repair quotes and waiting for responses. It turns out this insurance company isn't really an insurance company they're simply somebody that gathers all the information and submits it back to the moving company who then basically denies everything. I am still shocked that the moving company wouldn't even honor the items on the moving claim that they initially acknowledged. Especially since they packed, stored and delivered. They were the company responsible for my items not myself. When they do make you an offer which is about 10% of what you have reported they don't even give you an itemization. I have rugs and furniture damaged, and missing items. I am a single disabled woman and have no money to repair or replace my children's and household items. Devastating. read more

I have had a horrible experience with this company. I would stay far far away from them. I have used many different moving companies over the years and this one is particular bad. When they break stuff they lie about it and claim that they did not and then refuse to pay on the insurance policy that your paid for. I had AMS Bekins pack up my house when I was living in a different city and then keep it in storage for a few years. Finally, I had my belongings moved to my new home by Bekins. I had a very nice and expensive stereo system and one of my prized piece of equipment did not work when I got it. The main company out of the midwest claimed that they were not responsible because they did not pack it and AMS Bekins in Burlingame now denies any liability because "their driver" that they interviewed said that no boxes were damaged. I sent Val Hardwick at AMS Bekins in Burlingame, CA pictures of many crushed boxes. Replacement price for piece of equipment is several hundreds of dollars. This company I would put in the category of dishonest and I am going to report them to the BBB in Northern California. We can't say enough good things about this company. We were moving across country from San Francisco to just outside of New York City and while researching moving companies found lots of negative online feedback. Fortunately we had several friends use and recommend Bekins - AMS Relocation. Based on that feedback and the fact that their estimate was much lower than others, we decided use them. They packed our most fragile items and loaded our entire 3 bedroom house without an issue. They moved us in the middle of one of their most intense winters and arrived on time. Goodness where to start.A representative told me over the phone that they would contact me to schedule a time for packing. That never happened. I called them, and there operations manager told me we were schedule between 7-8am. The day comes and 8:15 rolls around nothing. I called and the same operations manager tells me his file says 8-9, and that they're barely loading the truck. They arrive at 9:30. In the middle of the move the head mover gets in a huge argument with his assistant (also happened to be his brother) after a few hours or the main guy working on his own. His wife, and HS daughter show up to help him move. I was a little surprised because I'm paying for a quality movers to help. The same thing the next day which was actually the move day, except no arguments. I gave a three because nothing broke on the 400 mile move, and they arrived there around the date and time they said they would. The first move was from Miami to San Francisco, we used Bekins of South Florida. We had a 4/5 star experience. But for this move, we went from San Francisco to Long Beach, CA and they did a better job. After reading the reviews on here about Bekins AMS, I was hesitant to use them, but I am so glad we did. If you like fiascos, then this is the company for you! The owner of AMS Bekins, Gary W (rhymes with Dolfe), aka Greg W on Yelp, is dishonorable... that once Bekins has your belongings on a truck he will change the price of the contract, even if it's BINDING, and threaten to lock the truck up in his yard until you pay the monies. I was "FORCED" into paying them additional monies and they do not honor their own binding contracts. Bill E.(rhymes with Bevans), the estimator, doesn't know how to properly bid a job (or the boss and driver don't trust his estimate figures, creating problems for clients), and their "best driver", Chris H (rhymes with Larper), has contracts changed after the move is halfway completed so that he can make more money on packing materials. The crew complained the entire week... and I should have known I was in trouble when the crew showed up in shirts from other companies like Mayflower and Allied... WTF kind of professionalism is this?? AMS Relocation Services, Bekins, et al... this company is a complete NIGHTMARE, and I wouldn't use them again if they paid me (they "OBTAINED" more than $20,000 additional monies from me... I had a large move, but that was an additional 50% over the contract price). Not to mention Bekins refuses to pay out insurance claims using falsified excuses, and the inventory log is doctored so that they can claim no liability - so check your inventory list VERY carefully! If they say something has a scratch you better inspect it for yourself and take a photo, because when it gets to your new home and it's completely dented and shattered, they'll say "it was on the inventory as damaged." Oh, and I was told by Chris H (rhymes with Larper) that he "hates to move military families, because they are the only ones that ever file insurance claims." I believe they also post their own five star reviews in attempt to amend their Yelp score... as when I asked Bill E (rhymes with Bevins). about their low ratings I was told "Yelp has not been kind to us, because we don't pay to advertise on their site... but we are working on fixing that." This review is only for the experience we had with the agent who came out to give us a quote. We had agents from a few different companies stop by to evaluate our belongings and Jim Diskin with Bekins/AMS was by far the only agent who stood out in terms of professionalism and follow through. He spent a great deal of time taking a thorough inventory, meanwhile going into great detail about how the costs are estimated, and why doing a super accurate estimate is so important. We learned that a lot of companies will low ball the estimate only to stick you with a much larger bill at the end of the move. If there are any discrepancies between what the agent inventoried and what the driver actually moves, the customer pays, even if it is not their fault. Whereas the other guys seemed to be eyeballing most of our stuff, and were in and out the door in under a half an hour, Jim went through our apartment for over an hour, counting all boxes and odd items of furniture, as well as asking lots of questions regarding what would stay and what would be moved. Once finished he tallied everything into his hand held device and gave us a detailed printout of our stuff and the cubic feet/weight that each item took up. He also offered to come back out at any time and redo the estimate had we been able to pare down our belongings before the move. He left plenty of literature and left no stone unturned in explaining every last detail and what we could expect. In keeping with his honest and straightforward approach he also brought up the issue of truck access to the new home, which he stated could bring about more charges if the truck is unable to pull up to the front of the house. In summary, he wasn't about to paint a rosy and breezy picture to the customer just to get their business. He offered full disclosure on all possible contingencies and how to resolve them beforehand so as not to be unpleasantly surprised in the end. As much as we would have loved to go with this company, we came to the realization that any full service move would have really stretched our budget. And so, alas, we will be moving it all ourselves in a rental van. For those of you who will be using a full service mover, by all means, call AMS to send Jim out and have the peace of mind of knowing you are dealing with a true, accountable professional. read more

We have just completed a long distance move with AMS Bekins and we could not be happier with the service we received. Bill Evans, the estimator, was personable, fast, accurate, and provided information in a very timely matter. The staff in the office were all very nice and helpful. The packers, loaders and unloaders at both ends of the move were all super careful, and needless to say, super strong! We could NEVER have packed our items to the standard they did. We moved a few weeks ago, while the movers seemed nice and were pretty efficient, they did leave some deep scratches on the wood floor. Of course the movers denied this the next day when I brought this up (also felt like I really was screwed when it came time to sign the contract at the end of the move saying no damage was caused by them, since It was pretty much my word against theirs). My wife also noticed an even deeper scratch after I had left to meet at the destination. I would say that even though we used Bekins before, when we moved from Illinois, I would say this second time, I would not recommend them again, or at least give other moving companies more weight when deciding which company to use next time. Plus, their prices were more than they should have been, given that pretty much everything was boxed and ready to go by the time of the move. The agreed delivery time range is 2 weeks, due to our small load and long distance (from CA to IL), which made me really worried at that time. But I do receive everything at the earist agreed date. Our driver, James Herrera, also did a fantastic job. He gave me an estimate window for freight elevator reservation for delivery and kept his words one week later. Excellent job! I had a move from Palo Alto from Pasadena. The process of getting a quote and getting my stuff collected was smooth. However, for a Tuesday pickup they gave a delivery window of Wednesday through next Monday, and did not actually deliver until the following Wednesday. The driver apologized saying he knew it was supposed to have come the day before, but they had left that day and did not arrive until late at night. The problem here is that this means my shipment did not leave the Bay Area until after my delivery window had already closed. So I still have no clear idea of why things were delayed, and it was frustrating trying to figure out when my shipment would actually arrive. read more

My move was pretty terrible because of Bekins. The guys who came to load the truck were several hours late. I let that go because I'm reasonable. Next, I was told that our stuff would be delivered on a Thursday. I thought that was kind of pushing the boundaries of reasonable timing but they were still within the agreed upon parameters so I was fine with it. As that day approached my delivery date kept getting pushed back. I continued to rearrange my work schedule with my new job to accommodate them only to have them tell me that it would not be delivered until Sunday. Not only were they completely apathetic to the problems they were causing with their incompetence but they were downright rude. They offered nothing in the way of solutions, they just continued to deceive and delay. As I tried to explain to some corporate stooge named Ashley Garrity that moving is stressful enough without having to put up with tardiness, lies, and excuses. Her solution to all of the issues was to offer up $75 for compensation. Save yourself a massive headache and chose another company. read more

I was very apprehensive about moving 42 years of accumulated stuff from California to Florida. I looked around, read reviews, and feared for the worst. But, I hired Bekins and this is what happened. They showed up on time, built crates for what needed to be protected and boxed up everything else. Done by 5 p.m. The movers arrive right on time and load everything into the van, disassembling the bed and other things that needed to be shipped. I am kept abreast of progress and the van arrives in Florida at the designated time and place. The van is unloaded quickly and professionally. The crates are taken apart, the bed reassembled, boxes stacked and everything excess hauled away. On top of that, the expense was far below the original estimate. I only wish that every move for everyone could be this good. Not one single broken or scratched item. Even the light bulbs in the floor lamp were unbroken. Was my experience out of the norm? I don't know, but I will never hesitate to recommend Bekins for moving. read more

My furnishings arrived -- nothing was missing or damaged. There's a lot to be said for that. However, instead of the "7 to 10 days" the salesman told me to expect, it took 16 days for delivery. The driver hadn't even left the state a week after my stuff was picked up. He made it within the guaranteed time, but the salesman shouldn't even hint at the 7-10 expectation. I was also told that a coordinator in the office would be in touch with me throughout the transportation of my furnishings across the country. Didn't happen. I had to call her to get the amount of my check, and she never updated me on the progress of the delivery. Nor did she or anyone call to see if delivery was made to my satisfaction. No follow-up whatsoever from the office. The driver was a character with a tendency to be rude. The only person I was really impressed with in connection to this move was Lee, the driver's helper, who did a wonderful job, carefully wrapping and carrying each piece of furniture. Horrible. Nine pieces of furniture damaged and two pieces completely destroyed. Went MIA for 3 days (driver did not call when he said, to update the delivery date and it arrived two days later than originally quoted. Interstate move from Bay Area to Phx. Twelve hour drive--six days to get there. The packing crew also damaged the front door with scrapes and gouges and left scrape marks in every room on the walls and woodwork. The worst part is customer service. We paid extra for insurance to cover about $9K. Customer service refused to let me call my furniture refinishers to inspect and determine best way refused to consider refinishing wood pieces--but spot fixing them. This doesn't age the same as the rest of the finish and results in polka dot effects in a little as a few months. They were unresponsive and the claims adjuster told me they, "didn't have to do anything for 30 days" when I asked them to come and remove the two boxes of smashed glass tables in my living room. We moved to a condo so had no place to put it, but more importantly, it was dangerous to try to move a box full of shards and pieces of inch thick glass. On the unloading end, it was disorderly and boxes were not inventoried, as was supposed to happen. One kid was nice but had no idea what he was doing. They left a path of wood and paper chips and debris everywhere (elevator, etc), and did not clean up after themselves---I had to get a broom and clean it. The were running out the door and not unpacking all of the boxes they had packed, which they were supposed to do and is what we paid for. The worst part is that because they are all independent contractors to Bekins. there is no end to end consistency of process, management or customer service. Bekins could care less about resolving this with good customer care standards. There is no urgency in responsiveness and their attitude is that they do not care about fixing the mess and destruction they have caused. DO NOT USE BEKINS if you don't want your move to turn into a nightmare. These people are horrible and don't care at all. read more
