So, I read recently, that using the self checkout is frowned upon because it "takes jobs" away from actual people. Here's the thing, none of the people at the check stands act like they want to be there, let alone deal with actual customers. I've been coming here for three years now. If I go to the check stand, I am NEVER greeted in any manner other than I am an irritation. Never asked how my day is, yet the checkers have no problem talking across check stands to each other about how it sucks they have to work on a Saturday. So I now and will always check myself out. It's Saturday at 8:21 p.m. and the lady in charge of the self check out didn't even bother to acknowledge me on my way out despite the lack of customer traffic. I work in a customer service based business. My first job was at raleys store 431. I know the value of customer service and that is something Bel Air no longer values in its employees. And Chris C. Don't bother responding with empty promises. Safeway may be a bit farther down the road, but I am treated like an actual customer there. I am greeted when I walk in, and thanked for shopping when I leave. To me, that is way more valuable than a store less than a mile away where the employees could care less who comes in and who goes out. read more

Well used to be a great store #519 now it seems like the employees just don't have customer service on their minds .. Of course, it's not all the employees mostly the people on the front end.. Will not go into detail about my very bad experience but it was terrible and left me with PTSD for real..And it's the only grocery store of its caliber in the area. Bel air is normally the grocery store I go to when I just need to pick up a few things and want to get in and out as quick as possible. Their prices are more expensive than winco and trader joes, but the past couple months I have noticed the quality of their food has declined. I usually buy most of my fruits and vegetables here. Lately, they have been going bad within one to two days after buying them. Yesterday, I came in to buy ingredients for dinner. I bought a bag of shredded Italian cheese. I came home and started cooking. I opened up the cheese and took a handful and put it on top of my chicken and it had CHUNKS of mold on it! I put it in the fridge as soon as I got home, and the use by date was August 2014. After this incident, I am nervous to buy anything perishable here. I'm not happy about that since it's close to my home, but I don't want to risk getting sick or coming home with moldy cheese. I shop at Raley's/Bel Air for great quality meats and great customer service. I stopped in Saturday 5/20/23 around 7:45pm to grab a couple of Ribeyes and bacon from the butcher as they are so delicious. As I was standing at the counter, I hear some kid in a black beanie working at the deli say "hey, you need to ring the bell if you want to get service from the butcher" as he started shaking his head at me like I was a moron for not seeing the tiny sign 20 feet away (I have never seen this sign or had to ring a bell for service before). The kid caught me off guard as I've never had this from any of their employees before. The beanie kid keeps looking at me and shaking his head before telling his coworker something. The coworker now repeats about pushing the button. Kid keeps shaking his head at me and I was so close to losing it as I specifically come to this store for better service. If I wanted to be treated like this, I would just shop at Walmart which is 2 blocks from my house. Luckily the butcher was friendly and made up for the rude deli kid. I left without calling him out as I kinda wish I did. I sure hope beanie kid figures it out and has better customer service. Maybe Walmart would be a better fit for him. read more

The best thing in this Bel Air is they still have Java City. The best coffee next to Starbucks! I been to this Java City. They make the best caramel javalaunch, they put espresso shots in them. Most Java City dont! The customer service is better than other stores. But their bakery never have the single cookies. Every time I go there, they never have good cookies or the donuts. She was patient, friendly and professional. With her expertise, she helped me pick out exactly what I wanted, from the vase to the flowers, everything. I was shocked at how beautiful the bouquet came out. More importantly, the person who I bought it for loved it. If she didn't tell me it was her first day on her own, I would've never known. I shop at this location very often although there are other grocery stores close to me in the area that have significantly cheaper prices. I am the type of person who will pay more to get quality products shop in a clean store and have great customer service. That's just not the case at this location. The customer service is very low here, they typically have long lines with long wait times, usually only 1-2 check stands open and a lot of the time it's the 15 items or less check stand, they will gladly, and very rudely turn you away if you have more than 15 items. This forces you to go to self checkout and you will have to wait to get any assistance because there is either no employees at self check, or they are there but on their phone, talking to other employees etc. the amount of times I've been ignored because an employee was on their cell phone is insane. The store has also gone downhill with its cleanliness, the check stands are always very dirty. For example tonight the self check was so dirty I was having difficulty even getting the items to scan. I tend to get the 8 pc fried chicken but they didn't have enough ready made, so I opted for the other hot wok options. Beef and broccoli is always a must, but today it was no bueno. It didn't have any of the sauce so it was super dry and the beef may as well have been jerky. The rice was very dry as well, I got the last bit so I think it had been sitting in the warmer for some time. The orange chicken was alright, no complaints there. When shopping yesterday I observed and employee (if I only knew her name I would put it here) who was rude, reached in and took a Fresh Turkey out of the cart of one of their loyal (hopefully not anymore) customers who if shocked by the action, no explanation of why .... then kept saying the limit is one per person - she does not ask which one she would like to keep -- (who gave her the right?) then proceeds to lock the wheels on the cart while her husband is going out the door WTF!!!! They were not stealing as their items had been bagged. I was embarrassed for this couple (who were so shocked they didn't know what to say) The cashier was embarrassed but did not speak up either. I don't get it, what has happened to customer service or common decency? I called customer service and reached someone who muted me, did not respond to anything I shared until the end and said he would forward. (Hopefully it goes somewhere as I never received a call back that I requested from the Store Manager -- Common Courtesy? I can tell you I will not shop here going forward, I will be happy to spend my hard earned money to their competitors! I can say the employee was having a bad day, but really? I've switched from using Walmart pharmacy to this Bel Air. I'm pleased with the switch so far. This is a good place to visit when I don't want to go all the way to the Sacramento co-op. They have a good selection of vegan foods and organic produce. The location is good. I like being able to hit WinCo and Bel Air on the same trip. read more

Janine, the associate team "lead" is terrible. How can someone be a "leader" while working at the pace of a sloth?!? Literally, THE slowest-moving human being I've ever encountered at bel air. I've never seen someone work so slowly with no "GUSTO" as a cashier, there. All I'm saying is, If I saw six to ten people in my line, I'd hurry it up--Not take my sweet time!!!!! So sad. This is my neighborhood grocery store, and I prefer it to others in the area. I will occasionally go to Winco (I've been a handful of times over the years), but for most of grocery needs, I come here. It's cleaner, the staff are very friendly (and many have been there for years) and it's just a nicer shopping experience. They are doing some construction and moving things around right now, but I'm confident when it's all done, it will look wonderful and continue to be my favorite grocery store in this neighborhood. Tonight I had a very bad experience at this location. Julie the cashier talks way to much and causes a Serious delay in getting people in and out. She even didn't know if she rang up someone's paper towels admitting she talks to much to the customer. Irritated I switched lines only for the manager Kristi-lyn to say she was closed. When I said "you have got to be kidding me?" She then rang me up irritated. She called someone on her microphone to apologize for going to lunch late. I said I can tell the manager it's because Julie wouldn't stop talking that I had to switch lines only to learn Kristi was the manager. Believe it or not, this place can get cheaper than Winco, provided you are constantly watching the ad specials and knowing the regular price at Winco. Most importantly, I only shop here when there is an ad special for meat, or if I can somehow find a nearly expired cut of meat they are discounting. I absolutely LOVE buying meat here because of the great service you get from purchasing cuts here. Not only can they customize your cuts (provided you get there during regular butcher hours), but they can also marinade or rub your meat FOR FREE. So here's your advantage over Winco. Second of all, keeping in mind that I am pretty stubborn when it comes to getting the most out of my dollar, watch the ad specials in other departments. There is usually a good fruit or vegetable deal every week, and another miscellaneous deal like cereal or soda. In this case they usually force you to buy four or more to get a deal, but prices CAN be better than Winco nonetheless. I also use Bel Air for my pharmacy needs. The staff is always friendly and is very prompt with customer service issues like calling patients right away as needed. The automated refill service is pretty efficient too! Also they have a fully stocked USPS station here for all your shipping needs! The clerks are also very friendly and personable with the exception of the average teenager that finds themselves working here! Yes I'm about to give an expensive store a 5 star rating, only because this store deserves it! I always stop here first before going to Winco to buy comparable staples like bread, milk and cereal. read more

The store is nice. This review is NOT about the store in its entirety but rather the Chinese food. I like to stop by here for a very americanized (which I always found odd considering every one of these bel air chinese counters i've been to has been staffed by chinese folks) bite of chinese food every now and again. I don't know why, it's not particularly good and definitely not authentic but for some reason I get a hankering here and there. Maybe I'm pregnant (god i hope not, i'm too young.... and a dude) or it's some sort of childhood nostalgia thing (I suspect this is why I still eat raw ramen noodles from time to time) In any case, there's a ho-hum collection of courses (broccoli beef, kung pao chicken, sweet-n-sour chicken, etc) but I always get a container of the chicken chow mein. This stuff is greasy and somehow still in need of a whole packet of soy sauce. But for some reason I really like it. They use the big honkin yellow egg noodles and there's a weird bit of chicken here and there with some green cabbage here and there. It ain't the best but it's cheap and consistently 'sorta' good. You'll probably find me here again, I just don't think I'd ever TELL someone who was looking for some chinese food to drive to their closest Bel Air :) read more

Just left Bel Air 5 minutes ago. A lot of passive-aggressive behavior going on with the employees at this store. I tried to pay for my items at self-check-out, but the system needed an employee to key-in his id #, and I looked over at him, but he was busy with his cellphone. So, I left self-check-out, and went to a cashier's check-out, and waited in line for a few minutes until it was my turn, and when it was my turn; the clerk looked at me and said he was closing his lane. So, I left my cart of items there, and walked-out. As I left the store, and was walking on Bel Air's side walk, I noticed the young man who retrieves carts; push a cart into the front-end of someone's parked car. The last two times at Belair I have come across the rudest cashiers. 1st I bought in my own bags. I was unaware of the new rule put in place the day before over no personal bags. The clerk way over reacted to the point of embarrassment. 2nd time I went to self check out the register froze. The clerk did not say one word to me but clear the register. I turned on the help button again because I was not aware a screen button had to be pushed. I had to walk up to this individual and ask for help. She walk up to the register looked at me like I was an idiot push a button and never said one word. This was extremely rude. The Walerga location is not the biggest or fanciest, but it is nice and is in my hood. ;) I like the large amount of parking spaces right at the front of the store.
