Eggplant parmigiana...if you can call it that, I surely wouldn't!
Melissa K.

To say the experience here was a disappointment is an understatement! Upon entering the restaurant I was underwhelmed by the atmosphere and ambiance. Plain and open, bright intense lighting, white walls with no personality and a few pictures, white table cloths, and tables just arranged in every which way. Just upon first glance it is uninviting. The hostess/front desk area is right as you enter the door and just a little bulky and awkward. There is a neon OPEN sign hanging in the huge windows that have zero coverings or decoration. This restaurant lacks charm in every possible way. We were greeted and seated quickly, but to say the staff was friendly is a stretch. They were polite but not overly welcoming or warm. Once seated a young man brought us water. A woman came next and asked for our drink order. Again little to no greeting from either of these services members. Next we received bread and our wine, and without any mention of specials or conversation we were asked for our order. We ordered a mozzarella caprese salad to share, an order of gnocchi with Gorgonzola cream sauce, and eggplant parmigiana. We had to ask for olive oil and or butter to go with the itty bitty slices of bread we received. This was promptly brought out. The bread was like sliced sourdough from a loaf, and seemed that each piece was toasted individually as if in a toaster, so it was kind of dry. Now, let me tell you about this "olive oil" or mystery oil if you will.... Yikes!!! It was either rancid or such poor quality oil, it actually tasted like old fashioned homemade play dough. I've never! Good lord I wouldn't want to serve that to a guest ever! Good olive oil is not hard to come by. This was very off putting. We received the mozzarella caprese quickly.... Again, what a let down. 4 slices of very unripe tomato topped with a little bit of fresh mozzarella and a blob of pesto on top. Yup that was it no fresh basil and the presentation was nonexistent. I've made a prettier caprese for a midnight snack! Despite the lack of presentation and barely pink tomatoes, it did taste decent. It had good flavor and the cheese was fresh and soft. Next, the entrees arrived! What was presented to me was not even close to what anyone would expect for eggplant parmigiana. I received a dish that would be used in a Mexican restaurant for queso dip... but filled with a soupy cheesy mystery meal! I actually said "I ordered the eggplant parmigiana" and was given a weak smile and nod as if to say yep here it is! I could not believe my eyes! My friend's gnocchi at least was recognizable however, it was literally swimming in sauce! Now let me interject that I'm from Italian heritage, my Italian grandmother ran restaurants all her life, and was a fabulous cook raised by her native Italian parents.... My dad is an excellent cook, I'm a very good cook, and we have family friends that are Italian chefs that run other restaurants. So, I know I may have high expectations, but ultimately I just expect to receive something that resembles what it's called! This eggplant whatever was an abomination of eggplant parmigiana! The eggplant was slimy and stringy, the sauce was overflowing like a soup, it was creamy for some reason rather than a simple marinara, there was such an abundance of melted mozzarella (not fresh just shredded mozzarella) that all I even tasted was cheese! I admit, I love cheese but this was overwhelming and there was zero other flavor. Aside from the general texture, the dish was so bland it was unreal! I e never eaten anything this messy and soupy that was supposed to be a standard dish on a regular plate. My guts are bubbling! The gnocchi was mediocre. Not awful but definitely not great. It had a mealy pasty texture. The sheer amount of sauce on this dish was also surprising! Just absolutely drenched in sauce! If this place reduced their saucyness by 50% the food would taste better and have better flavor balance in addition to cutting supply costs! The sauce tasted good but again it was bland not much Gorgonzola flavor but so so much cream! Throughout the entire experience my friend and I were shocked by the poor experience. She kept saying..."I knew it from the neon OPEN sign in the window"! The prices are average for Italian food but the quality is so poor it was disappointing to pay that much. I really wanted to like this place since the chef/owner is a long time local and I've read the news stories about his history here. He also has the same first name as my great grandfather which feels nostalgic to me, but the experience was quite unfulfilling. I'm giving 2 stars only because the service while not very warm was at least prompt and courteous. The wine was good, and while the food was unexpectedly over saucy, it was edible just not what I'd call Italian cuisine.

My husband and I decided to go to Bella Italia after watching a local news segment about this establishment and we were glad we did! This was tucked in the same shopping center we normally pass by and close to home. We called before coming as we didn't make reservations and it was a Friday night. The gentleman on the line told us they had availability for a table for 2. We walked in and noticed it was busy! Most of the tables were taken except the 5 along the wall. There was a little bit of a wait but it was like seeing a well oiled machine as there was a lady who was taking orders and bussing tables and a man who was delivering their drinks and giving checks to those who were ready to pay at the end of their meal. Both of them were also delivering the food orders as well. It was a breath of fresh air because of their work ethic, you don't normally see nowadays. You can't help but assume they were the owners of the restaurant! After a few minutes we were able to be seated and were given the menu. I was craving chicken parmigiana so I ordered that. My husband decided to order spaghetti with meat sauce and meat balls. We also wanted to try their tortellini with chicken broth. We were given a bread basket with oil and vinegar while we waited for our orders. As soon as we got the soup, we were excited to try! You can tell the tortellini was homemade and made al dente which was perfect. The chicken broth tasted homemade as well. Chicken parmigiana was delicious! The chicken was moist and the breading was thin! The sauce was light and flavorful; normally what I've had in other places sauce is all over overpowering the chicken. This one was a good balance. The pasta was also home made as well and went well with the chicken. The spaghetti was really good as well. My husband described the sauce on the sweeter side with carrots and possibly cinnamon. The meatballs were flavorful too, He ate it all! At the end of our meal, we were offered the dessert menu and we noticed they had panna cotta but different flavors! We asked our server what her recommendation was and she replied amaretto was one of her favorites so we went with that. That did not disappoint. It was smooth and the amaretto was so good! This is definitely one of the better local Italian restaurants we've been to and are happy it is only 10 minutes away from our home! We will definitely be back!

Bella Italia is exactly what the name implies. The food is as authentic as if you were in Italy. We went in a party of 5 on a Saturday night and had one of the Best 3 course dinners in Reno. We ordered the Octopus Carpaccio, Vitello Tonnato, and Melone and Prosciutto to start with a excellent bottle of Barbera wine. The second course is the reason we wanted to try this restaurant, They've famous for their Homemade ravioli's, We ordered the Funghi in the cream sauce and the Genovese in the Bolognese sauce, Absolutely excellent. Our main courses we had Vitello Marsala, Risotto Al Funghi, Chicken Parmigiana. Salad with Ham and Cheese. All executed to perfection. Our server was excellent lead us into another bottle of excellent Barbera. The Sweetness hostess was so nice gave us her brothers Sicilian Air BNB flyer as we told her we will be there this October. The unfortunate part of this review is sadly the restaurant is for sale and looking for someone who has the passion to carry on the business. My family and I are Italian. We have owned operated italian restaurants in the Bay Area for 40 years. We understand the business side and wish them the Best in the future. When we make it back to Reno? We will return to enjoy another excellent dinner. Buona Fortuna mi Amici!

Family owned and operated Italian restaurant in South Reno. The owners were at the front counter to greet and seat us for our dinner reservation and even come back around to check in on you, which is an added nice touch. It is a completely open dining floor plan. Feels very airy and fresh with nice music playing in the background but no booths if you're looking for a little bit of privacy. It's a little pricey. The ravioli sauce was a little watery but overall the food had good flavor. The tiramisu for dessert was the best I ever had. It was an enjoyable experience and would try again.

I went for a wine dinner with Italian wine. We had a nice mixed salad. Mushroom ravioli homemade style with tasty mushrooms. The Brassato was tender and had a nice sauce. It was a fun event.

She made great recommendations, let us taste the wine to ensure it was a good fit for us, and made sure we were taken care of. For dessert we had the Cioccolato Budino which was a dense, creamy and rich mousse covered in caramel chocolate cookie crumbs and homemade whipped cream. I opted for the following food items: * Bowl of Minestrone Soup ($7.50): a hearty vegetable soup with a tomato-based broth. Served with house-made bread. First and foremost, I experienced satisfaction with every bite of the food. The soup was so warm and comforting with the fresh vegetables. The bread was a nice complement to soak up the tomato broth. The Lasagna was absolutely delicious. The portion of the slice was generously huge, and the taste was on point, especially with the personal request of extra marinara sauce (I always love extra sauce on pastas in general). The hospitality from all staff members was so amiable and attentive. They ensured that I had everything I needed during the dining experience. For both my soup and pasta, I was given the topping of freshly grated Parmesan cheese. The interior of the restaurant was small, yet cozy, with a welcoming feel for families. The Italian-themed decor was a beautiful touch to the restaurant. The inside of the restroom was clean. Lastly, the lunch menu offered affordable prices. Overall, La Cucina Italian Eatery exceeded expectations in my book! From the filling portions of food to the spectacularly kind service, I highly recommend visiting this restaurant. I'll be returning whenever I am in the Reno, NV area again.

We arrived at 5 pm as soon as they opened, and three people were there waiting outside..they headed to the bar, we headed inside the restaurant. They gave us a nice table of two in the back and the music was amazing with a serious old school feel...I think finding a restaurant that still embraces the past is getting harder to find these days. Our waitress brought some fresh bread to the table as we ordered two beers from the menu. I noticed that this Yelp does not have wine listings anywhere, so I snapped some photos for wine lovers to get an idea on selection and price point. I admit that I looked at the actual menu and already knew what I wanted before I stepped foot in the restaurant....ricotta filled ravioli in a butter sage sauce....yes please! Hub thought he was going to get the fettuccini, but at the last moment went for the spaghetti bolognese. Situated on 4th, just off of McCarran, Johnny's is easily accessible from the West side of town. There was plenty of parking, which was nice. The restaurant has a old school vibe to it. Rich dark woods and a broody air to it. Legit. On the recommendation of our server, we started with the Garlic Bread. OMG. Was this delicious. A must order in my book. We also had the Polenta Pomodoro e Carciofo. Delicious Polenta, formed in a loaf then topped with grilled artichoke, tomatoes, mozzarella and topped with a white truffle oil. The Polenta wasn't for everyone but I personally throught it was delicious. The mozzarella gave the Polenta a rich savoriness that I enjoyed. The Artichoke brought a nice finishing taste to the dish. My wife ordered the Petrale Sole. A Grana Padano crusted fillet of Petrale Sole served with lemon-cream sauce, accompanied with angel hair pasta with fresh tomatoes & basil. I sampled the Sole, it was light, flavorful and delicious, with a nice snap of the outer crust. Nice. One friend ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo. You know you're in an authentic Italian restaurant when the pasta is homemade. Served with housemade fettuccine with generous serving of butter, cream, & Grana Padano Cheese. Then topped with hand grated Mozzarella. This dish sounded and looked amazing but if I'm being honest I would have preferred a more creamy finish to the Alfredo. The dish (sauce) just seemed very heavy. Another friend had the Spaghetti Bolognese. For an Italian restaurant to be good, you have to do the basics to perfection, in my humble opinion and Johnny's did not disappoint. While I did not personally try the spaghetti with meat sauce. The couple sharing the dish seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. Of course, the Spaghetti is homemade. Another dish was the Pollo al Raggio. A breaded boneless chicken breast with lemon, capers, mushrooms then topped with a white wine sauce and served with penne marinara. Johnny's does just a great job with breaded dishes. A nice crispiness on the initial bite but the meat is still delicate and juicy. Now I appreciate that I was at an Italian Restaurant but what can I say, I wanted a steak. The Steak is a 12 oz Certified Angus Beef N.Y Steak aged for 28 days, then marinated in olive oil & herbs and served with a creamy polenta. I gotta say, this was one good steak. Cooked to perfection, it was perfect. Chef's Kiss. It was nice to finish my meal with the same delicious Polenta that we started the evening with. Celebrating a birthday on this evening, a generous portion of desserts were ordered. Starting with the Tiramisu. I gotta say this was a really good Tiramisu. Sometimes bakers can get carried away with the Chocolate. My compliments to the Chef, this was the perfect blend of Lady Fingers, espresso and brandy and then finished with delicate dusting of chocolate and a proper dollop mascarpone. Next was the Pecan Ball. We had such high hopes for this dessert. Vanilla ice cream rolled in pecans and covered with hot fudge. In the end, this was nothing to write home about and way too expensive for what you got. This will be a hard pass for our next visit. The birthday girl ordered an Affogato. Which is Vanilla ice cream with a shot of hot espresso. If you enjoy that espresso flavor, this is the dessert for you. I don't like talking badly about the wait staff because they are the amongst the hardest working people. That said, for an elegant restaurant with the history of Johnny's, I was expecting more. Our waitress, while always polite just seemed a bit annoyed that she had to take care of us, like she was doing us a favor. We told her that we were celebrating a special birthday, asking if the birthday girl would get a complementary dessert. "We don't do complimentary desserts here". Okay fair enough. Often its not what you say but how you say it. Johnny's you can do better. Reflecting on the evening, everything was quite good. For a restaurant of Johnny's stature amongst the locals, I gotta say I was expecting more. Don't get me wrong, the food and desserts were all quite good, but I just wanted a bit more.

Dessert, Tiramisu - This was really good. We should have ordered a second one... And to wash it all down, I got a glass of Italian white wine which I really did not enjoy... Atmosphere - Double storefront. We seemed to always end up sitting in the second room but not today! I liked that they had a bar in each room. Table, booth, or bar seating. Two unisex restrooms. Plenty of parking. See pictures for business hours. Open 6 days a week; closed Mondays. Service - Good. We had a leisurely 2 hour dinner and never felt rushed. We were catching up with our good friends and new friends. Price - $323 + generous tips. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1990 as Davos; we have been customers for a very long time. Glad we are back and introducing our friends to your restaurant. Mid 1990 - Coco Pazzo, then renamed to Panevino. 2000 - Zozo's.

I like the pizza a bit more than the pasta. Perfect wood fired crust. We had the Double Down, which…read moreis Tomato sauce, mozzarella, serranos, red onion, calabrese sausage, hot honey. Service always great. Ambiance is vibey, although Reno needs to continue improving the situation downtown.

We were meeting some friends for dinner in Reno and they suggested Liberty Food & Wine Exchange…read more Overall, we're glad that they did...here is what we noticed: - The food menu was pretty broad, with a range of differently priced items, e.g., full dinners at $40+ while pizzas were in the $20's. There was a list of specials for the day too. - For a place that has "wine" in the name, I thought the wine list was a bit limited/uninspired...the reds, for example, were heavily focused on CA wines, with a few Italian ones thrown in. - My wife and I ordered the Bee Sting Pizza, the Pistachio Pesto Arancini, and the Wedge Salad...all to share between the two of us. While everything was good, the Wedge Salad was the standout, with the Arancini's a close second (and a great sized portion). One of our friends ordered the Salmon special, and it looked good but pretty small in size considering the ~$40 price tag. - Service was good. There was a mess up where the server didn't hear our friend's order correctly and brought the wrong item, but she fixed it although it meant that he didn't his food for a while after the rest of us started eating. It was an honest error, but it would be good if the staff were empowered to do some kind of goodwill gesture, e.g., a free drink, a free appetizer while he's waiting for the food, etc., when something like that happens. - There was a weird thing that happened on our bills...the total that was on the itemized bill that we got from our server didn't match up with the pre-transaction processing fee total that was on our credit card copy...and, unfortunately, our server couldn't explain why. And, yes, there is a 2.5% credit card transaction fee added on (which we didn't see on the menu or anywhere else, but we learned about when we got the itemized bill). - Vibe is just ok...it's pretty loud and the tile floor and tables/chairs felt a little cafeteria-like. I wouldn't call it cozy by any means. Bottom line: Liberty Food & Wine Exchange was a nice place to meet up and the food was tasty...when I asked my wife if she would go back again, her answer was that we should try other places first, which is probably what we'll do.

Very happy to find a good lasagna where you can choose from having simple marinara or a bolognese sauce. We chose the bolognese and it was a perfect addition to the cheese lasagna. Plenty of cheese and sauce, the cheese pull was crazy. The veal Marsala was delicious, tender, and had great flavor. The sauce was rich in flavor somewhat lemony with plenty of mushrooms and coated the pasta perfectly. The pasta seemed to be very fresh and had great texture. We arrived 20 minutes after their 5 pm opening without reservations on a Friday and we had the option to choose the bar area which was great for us. The drinks were delicious. The basil mojito was very refreshing. The old fashioned was perfect and traditional. Great waiter and attentive. Helped me choose and offered me a good drink. Good Italian restaurant with a semi casual atmosphere.

One coworker enjoyed her mushroom filled pasta in cream sauce, another coworker had steak and did not care for it--but you're at an Italian restaurant, not a steakhouse. All the dishes were HUGE portions, so you will not go hungry. Pass on the chocolate mousse--it was grainy and unappealing. Service was top notch and made up for some of the meal's shortcomings.
