The food and service here have been going downhill at an exponential rate. First of all we ordered a calamari appetizer that the server completely forgot, and when it finally arrived it was soggy and absolutely bland. Also, we ordered the pasta pesce and fish tacos, and both had no seasoning and tasted flat. I've been here more times than I can count over the course of about 12 years and have never once been disappointed. I live out of state now, but try to go there every time I'm back in town. I'm not sure why I even bothered coming here bc I don't like Italian food. I'm giving it one star because my husband and mom didn't like their food either and they do like Italian food. Mostly though I was annoyed with our waitress who was giving us an attitude from the moment our butts hit the seats. She seemed to have a problem with my kids. I'm sure waitressing a table with kids is typically a pain but my kids (ages 3 and 8) know how to behave in restaurants. I felt like she was either annoyed to wait on a table with kids or was having some other personal issue. Regardless, rude service. Oh also, I was checking this place out for a possible location for my daughters private birthday party. I contacted the restaurant before my visit to inquire but no one returned my call. Although I've had a few people tell me that their visits were not great, I've had nothing but superb experiences and I'v eaten there several times. The salads, bread, entrees, deserts, appetizers, etc. are always done right. The food is fantastic. The way Italian shoud be! Came with a large group for a graduation celebration. The house salad is just not good nor is the bread. These are staples at any Italian restaurant so I was disappointed. I like this place! I was surprised to see that others didn't! It is one of the nicer places in the area, it is almost always packed and the food is reasonably good. I have been there for lunch and dinner and have to say that the lunch menu is more affordable. Lunch entrees come with house or Cesar salad, I prefer the house- it comes with a delicious vinaigrette dressing and tiny bits of bacon, it is good. I usually get the Eggplant Parm, it is a reasonable portion, I never have leftovers, the bread/butter are also very delicious. The lunch portions are smaller than the dinner entrees, but I think they are sufficient and fill you up! read more

I've never rated a restaurant before, but my experience at Bella Milano deserves a comment. It was wonderful! My husband made the reservation for our whole family to celebrate my birthday. When we arrived, part of our party was already seated, not forced to wait in the lobby, and enjoying some lovely wine. We were promptly seated, waters filled, and appetizer/drink orders placed. The appetizers ranged from some of the best fried calamari I've ever had (my husband and I live on The Hill and have experienced a wide range) to a bruschetta with pesto that I would willing eat as my sole food source for the rest of my life. Those were just the appetizers! The Milano salad is an absolute treat. A house-made Italian-style dressing tossed in a bed of lettuce, cheese, and prosciutto cubes. For the main, I had cheese tortellini. It had a kick but it was softened by the cream--an extraordinary combination that was new to me. My husband had a seafood spaghetti with a lemon butter sauce. He reports that it was sweet, rich in flavor but did not feel heavy after he ate it as most butter sauces make him feel. For dessert, everyone has a bite or two of each others food and the table agreed that the best by far was the fried cheesecake and the Sicilian chocolate cake. The chocolate was decadent and exceptional, nicely offset by the raspberry purée. The cheesecake was on a bed of creme anglaise and, to be honest, I'm getting hungry just thinking of it. Like I said, the experience was amazing. I'd recommend having all of your birthday and anniversary dinners here in the future as they really know how to take care of their guests! We had a great experience on our first visit together. Our biggest compliment is to our server, James. He really went out of his way to make it a great meal. One thing he asked almost right away, really impressed me. How do you want to pace your meal? Do you want to stay a while and take one thing at a time, or are you wanting to take things more quickly? I can't tell you all how many times I've gone to a place and gotten my appetizer at the same time as my main course AND salad. He went out of his way to make sure he asked. Our food was good. You have to love Provel cheese to love some of these items. To the reviewer complaining of the thick, "cheap" cheese and loaded with corn starch, I'm not so sure you understand the St. Louis tradition of Provel cheese. Both my wife's and my entree featured it, and we loved it. I will say I wasn't impressed with their calamari appetizer. Their coating was great, and it was a great chance to try their own red sauce. I love both, but the calamari itself was tough, and overpowered by the thick coating and red sauce. It deserves a more delicate treatment. Their salad is typical for St. Louis area italian. Lettuce marinated in sweet italian dressing until it turns a bit soft. And it was great with prosciutto and cheese. The one real negative is that we had asked for chive on our baked potato, if they had it. It came out with green onion. That's not the same thing. They should know that. They served the condiments on the side, though, and that was easy to correct ourselves. Even with a couple minor complaints, the service we received more than made up for it. Even their complimentary glasses of water were good, which is rare. I'll be sure to visit again. read more

I have had herd a lot about this restaurant for quite some time. I was hearing mixed reviews but I thought i'd try it any way. My girlfriend and I visited a week ago and it was a terrible experience. First things first the staff was mediocre at best. Our waiter was not nice at all, dis not know anyting about any of the dishes they served here. Next the prices were astronomical given the totally sub par taste. The food wouln'dt be so bad if it was priced in the 6-9$ per dish. I'm not a tight wad, i will gladly pay top dollar for good Italian food. However this is the oposit. The food is totally bland. The salad was raved about but was just ice berg lettuce with bacon and provolone. I get better salad at imos pizza. Be sure to steer clear of this restaurant and go to the hill in st Louis or something just not here. read more

Came in last Saturday with my family(party of 4) and didn't have reservations, which was silly on our part. We had a small wait but the hostess made us feel really welcomed and was talkative and friendly during our wait. We were seated promptly and our server arrived outlaying all of the dinner specials and house wines.to start off I ordered a passion fruit cocktail and it was to die for!! I've been going to Bella Milano since 1985 on West Main Street in Belleville when they were under a different name. I am still a regular and love their house salad, specials, atmosphere, and their staff is super friendly. We recently celebrated my father's 80th birthday there and we were treated like royalty. Got together with the whole family the other night at Bella Milano. We were able to reserve a private room, the "Godfather" room to be specific. The space holds 10 comfortably and gave our group a good deal of privacy. It even has it's own dedicated heat/cooling. The waiter was very nice and very efficient. I started off with a Red Sangria. A little bubblier than what I drank in Spain, but with amazing flavor. I would most certainly get it again. Bella's house salad is definitely a highlight. The crunchy prosciutto bit are amazing. We shared an order of St. Louis favorite toasted ravioli. They were spot on. Some of the best I have had in the entire region. For my main I had baked mostaccioli. It was very solid. The sauce is a bit on the sweet side, but I grew up with sweet tomato sauce. The leftovers made an excellent lunch. We had an excellent experience. I'm going to have to agree with the other mystified reviewers. I've eaten dinner at Bella Milano three times, and I just don't get it. The last time it was because I was basically forced to go there for the sake of other people's convenience. The oddest thing about this place is that people love it. It has a sort of fancy, glitzy, pretentious self-image which is amusing to some extent, but ultimately a little depressing. I've had two chicken dishes and one fish dish. The sauces are very salty and sticky, like they have too much cheap cheese and corn starch in them. The wait staff has been friendly, and it is cheerful to be in a place where the other patrons are enjoying themselves...but it's just kind of weird! Nothing seems very fresh. Couldn't believe the level of neglect I experienced ordering a simple to-go pasta pesce at this location around the hours of 7:00 P.M. Monday the 18th. I could tell the lack of enthusiasm in their hostess' voice, as well in their 'to-go specialists' voice. I've been here a few times. I've really wanted to try to like it and shop local, but this is no "taste of the Hill". Disclaimer: I AM A HILL SNOB. I think I'm 50% Italian, I've been to Italy, and I can cook good Italian food. That being said here is my review. I've had the Chicken Stasilli that has received raves and honestly I can say "I don't get the hype!". The chicken was fine on it's own, but the veggies and heavy lemon gravy was something bad from Kraftfoods.com. It did not seem like the quality of food they advertise. Also have tried the Blackened Grouper due to Lent season. Let's just say my Mother is an aficianado of all things hot. The hotter the better. She said well this is spicey for just being "blackened". Although it didn't bother her heat wise there was something that just didn't taste well at all. If you get this, I suggest no cheese or peppers or aioli. Something didn't mix well and it would probably do good on its own, with those on the side or not at all. Jury was unsure about this. This place is not fancy, it is not upscale. This is a casual restaurant in a strip mall, in a city that has a lot of $$ to spend, but few choices to eat at. If you eat here I believe the service will always be fabulous as I have not had a bad experience both eating in and take out. However, the food is nothing more than OK. I would only suggest anything with their meat sauce as it is edible. Anything else I would say no. The only thing you can't go wrong with here is the ravioli, the meat sauce it is served with and the bread. The Milano salad is fine as an accompaniment but I think it's very over priced for the serving sizes and quality. I feel really bad saying this, but I won't eat here other than for take out Milano salad and ravioli period. If all I like is their meat sauce, well I can make spaghetti or ravioli at home from DiGregorio's staple items and be just as happy. DiGregorio's Mama's meat sauce is heaven in a frozen tub.
