There's a lot of restaurants to choose from in the North End, but over the years BenCotto has become our family favorite. Some of their specials are phenomenal and worth trying, but at this point our family has our tried and true dishes, and rarely takes a look at the menu. First up, Gnocchi BenCotto: on the menu, it's listed as Orichetti BenCotto- but you can substitute any of their pasta in. The soft gnocchi is perfect with the crispy bacon and the light sauce. My son loves the pizza BenCotto, but adds mushrooms on top. BenCotto gets mobbed during the summer season, like all of the restaurants in the north end, but there's no better place to tuck into during a cold Boston day in the fall or winter. In addition to the food, the location on a corner with big windows overlooking Hanover street makes for some of the best people watching in the area. read more

They served us bread and olive oil, the bread was nothing special but the olive oil was really good. The orechiette bencotto pasta was very good and I would get it again. We got the primavera pasta with fettuccine as well with white wine sauce which was not my favorite because it was kind of bland. They charge extra for fresh pasta which is kind of annoying. You could tell the noodles we got were not fresh pasta. Both pastas were huge servings and 2 dishes was plenty to split for 4 people. There is seating inside but they leave windows open and it was super breezy. Basically if you come here, get the orecchiette bencotto pasta, but there are better spots in the north end with fresh pasta that don't charge! Arrived with a group of 10 after making reservations a week prior and were escorted to the basement where there was a cool speakeasy vibe and seating for maybe 25 people. We had a waiter available and highly attentive throughout our meal and everyone seemed to enjoy the food and drinks without any issues. It is hard to get gluten free pizza right, but I think Bencotto did a good job. The crust was thin and floppy in some parts, charred and crispy in others. Overall it held up well with delicious tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese on top. The restaurant had a lovely ambience with Italian music and large windows open to the street that let fresh air in. Honestly I wish they had an entrée size portion for their pumpkin ravioli, which was the total star of the dinner we had. It was phenomenal, super flavorful and paired with the perfect cream sauce. Although small this place is very mighty. . Made a 6:15 reservation, sat down right away and as I was admiring the kitchen staff , we ordered up drinks . Not a seat to be had , it was loud and youthful. The table ordered up Shrimp Scampi and Chicken marsala. Both were excellent! Delicious spot for an Italian food Saturday night... you literally can't go wrong with any item on this menu. We had to wait a bit despite having a reservation (~10 minutes), but everything was worth it. The service was prompt and the food was great. Also noteworthy- the reservation was very simple to make and the manager was more than happy to confirm it multiple times over the phone. As for the food- I went for the Orechiette BenCotto, and added crispy chicken to it. Hands down one of the best choices I've ever made in my entire life. The pasta was cooked perfectly, the tomato-cream sauce complimented the dish very well, and both meats were smoky and delicious. It also tasted better because of the cozy environment we were served in. It was pleasant to see that the restaurant had multiple levels, and lots of tables to fit people in. Despite many restaurants in the NE being super crowded for dinner most nights, this place seems to do it right in terms of the flow of customers. read more

Lobster ravioli for the win! When in the North End, you've gotta get your Italian on. After seeing the ridiculously long lines at Giacomo's and Carmelina's down the way, I decided to see if BenCotto had any availability for a table. There was still a short wait, but they were able to seat me right at the bar. BenCotto has a small space but it's intimate and charming. The bar space is super close to the kitchen so you can peep them preparing some of the meals and witness the interactions between the staff. The only available seat at the time was a seat that was right in front of the door. The draft from the wind was mighty cold and I felt it every time someone opened the door to the restaurant. Luckily, I was able to move to the other side of the bar when another couple left. This time I was closer to the kitchen but not sure if I was supposed to hear some of the staff jargon that was being said. It was very entertaining but might have been a little too close for comfort. Aside from that, the owner/manager was very welcoming and funny. A true Italian man at heart and so were several of the kitchen staff and the chefs. The bartender was completely slammed and I understood why. The place was packed with people and she was making all of the drinks by herself. Despite this, she held down the fort and still made time to check in with me and the other patrons at the bar. The wine and cocktail menu is extensive. I went easy and had a split of Prosecco Rosé. Just about all of the entrees on their menu looked scrumptious, but I couldn't stop myself from ordering their lobster ravioli. It's one of my faves, and being in Boston, seafood pasta was pretty much a must for me. And let me tell you, they definitely do it well. The ravioli was pillowy soft and practically melted in my mouth. Both the lobster meat and the lobster pieces tasted very fresh. And that pink shrimp cognac cream sauce was absolute dynamite. The portion was just enough to fill me up and I left full and satisfied. Although not as popular as Giacomo's or Carmelina's, BenCotto is still an excellent option for Italian food in the North End. I'd come back here again to indulge in more Italian deliciousness as opposed to waiting in line at those other restaurants. BenCotto is a gem in the North End. read more

We have visited North End countless times in search of traditional Italian cuisine and have finally found our place in BenCotto. Their sauces were not the heavily reduced, almost too rich to eat, sauces that are found in most of the newer establishments. In true Italian form, you could sense that the food was made using recipes passed down from many generations. Service was great - attentive staff and overall wait to be seated and served was reasonable. Ambiance was old world feel, just what you would expect! If you're visiting during the hot weather I recommend you ask for a table upstairs in their main dining area, as while the downstairs is cute and intimate, it can get very warm. We had just arrived in the North End and were looking for someplace inside with a table for five to get lunch and kill a couple hours until we could get in to our condo at 3:00. The hostess here seated us immediately in an ice cold basement (we were visiting during an epic heatwave) where we basically had our own dining space, and we never felt rushed. The pizza, pasta and sandwiches were all amazing, and the service was superior! Picture this.... it was about 4pm, my first time in this area and I was starving. I had checked out several restaurants but I can't walking until I this cozy restaurant was calling to me. The menu looked really good. I was seated right away since it was about 4pm even though there were several people seated at the cozy bar and about four tables were already occupied. Originally, the Chicken Parmigiana had caught my eye, however, then I noticed Lasagna was on the menu. Trevin N, server, had greeted me shortly so I decided to order a glass of Pinot Grigio and I decided to try the Lasagna. Couple of minutes, the wine was delivered then few more minutes, the Lasagna was delivered. Of course, I needed some extra cheese. Needless to say, the wine and the Lasagna were excellent. Trevin did check in with me couple of times. Granted, this restaurant is cozy, however, people were strolling in for a table. Came here with friends during thanksgiving week and it was splendid time. The ambiance of the restaurant made it very home-y. We got 3 pizzas to share between 7 of us and it was plenty of food for us to be satisfied. I wish we had a chance to try some pasta dishes though. We also tried the espresso martinis which were delicious. It tasted just like a Starbucks Frappuccino....so dangerous. We did not have a reservation and came on a Saturday night. We have to be there for walk-ins, so we waited for around 45 minutes outside. The restaurant is quite cozy, but also very packed. I ordered the amatriciana with fusilli fresh pasta. For an almost $30 pasta dish, I expected a really large portion or very good pasta. I'm not sure I got either. The portion was a regular size, and the pasta was merely ok. I definitely appreciated the fresh pasta aspect of it, but it was overcooked. The sauce was nothing outstanding and it was quite salty, but there was a good portion of pancetta in it. Further down on Hanover, it gets quieter but not less delicious. It's a smaller restaurant with lots of character. There's a wood oven for pizza which smelt delicious when coming out of the oven. The bruschetta was really fresh which was unexpected in January. The bolognese was pretty good but could have used some more seasoning/meat in the sauce. Nice portion size for the price. The menu has a wide variety of pizzas and different toppings to eat. We ordered two pizzas and also a seafood pasta. Be it that we must have been tired of this dinner we accidentally ordered white pizzas just with different toppings on them. I would have wanted to try one with tomato sauce on it but overall the white pizza was flavorful and the crust was nice and thin. We ordered the Freedom trail pizza and also Paul Revere. I liked the freedom trail more because it has shrimp, tomatoes, and basil in it. Paul Revere had breaded chicken and was more of a hearty meaty pizza. The seafood pasta was a nice blend of different muscles, clams, and octopus in it. The sauce was tomato so that was nice! The server was very nice and attentive although he was busy. I ordered the sausage fusilli and it was really good. The food came fast and it was fresh.
