I wish we could give 0 stars! customer service at this location is AWFUL. Our first experience : we tried to have an early dinner on a weekday. We showed up around 4pm and the place is empty. We are told that they cannot seat us for 40 minutes? We opt to eat elsewhere. This occasion was not too upsetting as we understand the logistics of running a Japanese steakhouse can be difficult trying to fill up the tables. Our second experience really showed their true colors. We called and made a reservation for 7:40pm for 5 people. We arrived at 7:40pm on the nose. We were told to wait a few minutes. No worries. Twenty minutes passes. Another table opens up and so we're expecting to be seated since it's already 20 minutes past our reservation time. They seat other people. We ask how much longer the wait would be, and are told that they changed our reservation because "we arrived late". We didn't arrive late. And even if we did, they should have told us our reservation was changed upon arrival, not after we waited for twenty minutes.... We were told we were going to have to wait even longer for another table.... Very poor customer service. Poor communication by the employees and by the manager. An open letter to Benihana Management..... Dear Honorable Benihana, I will not return because your portions are small and your prices too high for the quality and quantity you provide. Your new Polaris Lifestyle Center restaurant is beautiful. Beautiful wood and stone work. Quiet exhaust fans. I visited you during lunch and daylight, but I am sure the restaurant glows in the evening. One minus - your grill tables have no opening for the chef to discard shrimp tails/beef fat cut from the meat, etc. Our chef chose to leave this on the grill in front of my plate - not an appetizing site during the majority of my meal. Your service was very good, you had many people there to get my drink refills and to take away my plate when I was finished. Its a big restaurant, and it did eventually fill by the time I left today. As for the show, I think my chef was Emilio. I think you may want to continue to develop his skills as a teppanyaki chef - at the moment he has NONE. Our "show" consisted of the onion volcano, an onion "choo choo" train down the path between the zucchini strips, and some very bad shrimp tail tossing (3 out of 8). Our chef could not cook more than one item at a time. Some people at the table received their vegetable course first, and waited 25 minutes until they received another bite of food. He was only cooking for 5 people....an extremely easy table to set up and cook. I was a grill cook for Friendly's during my first year in college, I cold have cooked the meal with the same flash and speediness. I must tell you that your food is NOT a good value. I ordered the shrimp and chicken combination, as did my dining companion. The combination comes with salad, protein, vegetables (zucchini and onions only), and vegetable fried rice. Here's the lack of value - one chicken breast that looked like it came from the bag of frozen chicken breasts, maybe 4 ounces total for 2 people. You placed 8 shrimp on the grill - medium sized 26 to 30 count per pound - for two people. The vegetables for the table of 5 people consisted of 5 horizontal slices of an average sized zucchini and two slices of onion. The salad was a normal portion of iceberg lettuce with a nice portion of fresh shredded carrot and some red cabbage and a small tomato wedge. All of this food for $14.25. It appears that ordering the combination gets you half of the normal portion, but charging you 25% more than the standard potion. Interesting pricing strategy. This is contrary to most other teppanyaki grills, where your portion size doesn't vary with a combination - they usually just add the additional item to the standard portion. The flavors of the food - very bland. No sauce on the proteins. Soy and sesame on the vegetables, and fried rice (minced zucchini and carrots mixed with egg, rice and some soy.) Pretty bland by itself. The two dipping sauces - the standard ginger sauce was excellent the mayo thick sauce - too much mayo for my taste. So Honorable Benihana Management, you will find me across the parking lot at House of Japan. It is a little less fancy, but they do give you larger portions for your dollar. I went here with a birthday gift card that you get for signing up for their email. I've only been to one other of this style of Japanese steakhouse so I was very excited to go! It had three courses, four if you were a birthday like me the first course was a clear broth soup that reminded me of a chicken noodle soup but more refined. The second course was a house salad. I didn't care for the dressing on it. The third course was the entree for which I chose Teriyaki Beef with chicken fried rice. It. Was. Awesome. My date had the surf and turf and also really enjoyed it. Our chef was a lot of fun and did several really cool tricks as he cooked, bouncing the egg on his spatula and cracking it on the edge() flipping it over his shoulder and behind his back, stacking the onions and making the tower steam and using a piece of zucchini to make a little cho cho train, using something that looked like soy sauce, putting it I to the stack of onions then somehow making the sauce bubble over the sides of the stack like a tiny volcano this pleases me. read more

Oh, Benihana...I really want to like you, especially since you give me a $30 coupon for my birthday each year. But I just can't...especially since there are so many other Japanese steakhouse options in Columbus. That's right...for anyone who's not aware, just sign up for their email list, and Benihana will send you a coupon good for a free meal up to $30. It's about as good as it gets for a birthday freebie. This trip was for lunch on a weekday afternoon, and I did notice that out the the three parties at my table, there were 4 birthday coupons between us. Not sure if that was just weird luck, or indicative of the value of your food. So anyway...I went with the shrimp and filet. While the steak came out fine, the chef put everyone's shrimp on the stove right at the beginning of his spiel and just let it cook...and cook...and cook. Seriously, it felt like it was on there forever (he put it on just after he walked out from the kitchen, and left it on there while he cooked everyone's rice and beef, etc. before finally plating them just before he left). So I shouldn't have been surprised when my shrimp was extremely dry and tough. Plus, the portions really are smaller than at other similar establishments. Every time I walk out of Genji or House of Japan, I have a box big enough for another meal. Here, I had no leftovers - and it was most definitely not because the quality of food was fantastic or anything. While I might be back next year when my birthday rolls around, I won't be paying full price anytime soon...and based on the number of coupons at my table, I'd say I'm not the only one who feels that way. read more

This was my first visit to Benihana. I've always heard such amazing things about this restaurant unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype. We visited on a Thursday night & were told we would have an hour & a half wait due to reservations; but the "lounge" was open seating. *score* The mixed drinks were pretty good & the sushi was standard. I ordered the shrimp & steak with fried rice, to which I wasn't enthusiastic about. Average food. The steak was chewy & fatty with not a lot of flavor. Okay, as a fairly experienced foodie, this was one of the worst experiences I've had. Not the place to go if you're hungry as they take their time attending to you. For example, we were told there was a 10 minute wait, were then seated after 10 minutes, and waited for another 15 minutes before anyone took drink orders. Was here over the Labor Day weekend. With an OpenTable reservation, we check-in with the host and hostess. They look up and thank me and start laughing. While I think it was some kind of little game of guess who these people are that are entering, I don't think it's good customer service to laugh in front of your customers because you made some kind of stereotypical guess about who they were. Service was slow. Our waitress served our soup, took about 10-15 min to bring salads, and then we waited another 20 min before our chef arrived. I get the sense the waitress was purposefully stalling to allow the chefs to catch up as they had fallen behind. Enjoyed the performance and mom had a good time for her 1st visit. We split the steak and chicken for 2 special. Chicken was slow cooked the entire time by the chef which provided a soft, white meat taste. Steak was cooked medium with warm pink center throughout. Fried rice had too much artificial flavoring and just did not taste like traditional Asian fried rice. Grilled zucchini, onions, and shrimp are regular components here and I wish they provided option whether you want all the sesame seeds and soy souce on the zucchini. I dont give many five star reviews. But wow! Hibachi at its finest!! We had this for lunch the other day, and i don't think you can find a better deal. I got the lunch duet with julienne beef and scallops, and chicken fried rice. It also came with your choice of soup or salad (i ordered both hehe) and grilled veggies. A VERY filling lunch portion for much cheaper than the dinner prices. Everything was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. The most satisfied ive been at a restaurant in a LONG time. We also got a half roll of sushi (crunchy roll) that was fantastic. Id eat lunch there everyday if i was allowed to nap after lunch. And our hibachi chef Tony was great! Brought my friend to this place for her belated Birthday dinner & regretted it. For those of you who seen one of those Restaurant Stakeout where the workers screw up, this place should be on that show. The guy who waited on us i can tell isn't even a actual waiter. He barely knew the menu & had to keep reminding him what's included with meal. He forgotten side dish, tea, dessert, having to remind him each time when he forgets to bring it out. Just like on the Restaurant Stakeout show, he's goofing off with coworkers instead of doing actual work. I believe he's probably the bartender base on his lay back & don't care attitude. Food quality was subpar, tasted like microwave food. sushi was very dry, tasted like they used instant rice for it. I'd actually had sushi that same day for lunch, difference between day & night. I've checked Benihana's website for what I want to order. On Benihana's website all Sushi menu is listed under Teppan Menu and last year I had Sushi combination for my birthday dinner. However, last night, when I got my check, the manager came to our table and said he can't honor the certificate because it is not Teppan menu. To me, it is confusing users who check menu before go to the restaurant. I didn't even get my birthday dessert. (Previous years, I have had dessert and also had sushi combination - and manager came out and greet me with Happy Birthday) I was so embarrassed in front of my guest and it was worst experience at Benihana restaurant. Took my daughter for her birthday, we had had a pretty good experience a couple years previous. This visit helped us decide that we would not return. The server was extremely unavailable, brought drinks spilling them all over and didn't return to help with the mess, no manager was apparent. I advised that it was my daughters 9th birthday when I made the reservation and when we checked in and they forgot, she was disappointed, Things took so long! we just wanted to leave after eating the mediocre quality food, they were not busy, the staff (management) was obviously not interested in customer service or satisfaction. In terms of good HIbachi in Columbus, Benihana is close to the top. With that said, I wouldn't come back here. I've been to a fair number of Hibachi's since I'm usually traveling 90% of the time for work. Benihana has a very distinct style which I'm not really a big fan of. With that being said, the food was rather well prepared. Our Eel roll was rather good, the california roll consisted of primarily shredded crab. I'm more of a fan of the solid stick with something sweet so I didn't care for the roll all that much. Everything was made with minimal to no soy sauce, the rice however being the exception. The only seasoning used on the veggies, main course, and appetizer was salt and pepper. It was an ok meal, just not my cup of tea. I prefer the traditional americanized hibachi with heavy soy sauce on everything. If you're not a big soy fan, this might be up your alley. If you're like me, don't even stop in, you'll be disappointed. read more

I had dinner here with friends and expected it to be as wonderful as the many California Benihana Restaurants I have frequented. It was a HORRIBLE experience from the start! -Some examples: -The hostess was cold and unfriendly, not a good first impression. -Waiter tried to upsell us on EVERYTHING, big turn off. -I ordered the Filet and asked for medium rare. It was well done because he spent the whole time telling us how burned out he was and that he could not stand the smell of the food any longer?! - My Bloody Mary arrived in the smallest daiquiri glass I have ever seen and it was bland. - My guests asked for water, I assumed our waiter would bring one for me also? No. -After my food was delivered it was 10-minutes before the waiter came back to the table, I then was able to ask for soy sauce for my rice. The entire evening was worse then a bad movie! Tonight's dinner was awful. First of all, I'm cutting carbs, so I was hoping for an option to just get extra veggies. I was told that wasn't possible (found out later their veggies are a few pieces of zucchini, onion and mushrooms. They couldn't have given me that instead of rice?) I then asked for brown rice, halfway into the cooking they told me they didn't have brown rice. So they offered to give me fried rice and not charge me. So I decided to go for that. Although they ended up charging me. (Later they did take it off my bill after I complained) They never brought out our green teas with the meals (two people got the six course meals and they finally had to ask for their ice cream after getting the checks). They kept asking if we wanted boxes, but it took forever for them to come. Basically it was all overpriced for the quality. I would avoid going there. Definitely not worth it when there are much better Japanese/Hibachi restaurants in the area. read more

If I were to base my review solely on the food, I'd give this place 3-4ish stars. I would give our chef 5 stars because he was very accommodating, kind, and entertaining. However, the service was absolutely atrocious. We made reservations for 6:30 and weren't seated until close to 7:30. Once we were seated, it was another 10 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order. It was then another 30 before we got water and were able to place our orders for food. Eventually, we got the drinks we ordered from the bar. Once the chef arrived and we got our meals, things were fine. However, by that point we were all starving and just happy to be eating! The soup and salad that come with the meal were pretty standard. I had steak and shrimp for my entree. The steak was really good and cooked perfectly. Everything was seasoned well and not overly salty. Our chef was so nice and very patient with my 1.5 year old who was a little terrified of all the fire and knives. All in all, we had a nice time as a family once all was said and done but I can't give this place more than one star based on how long it took to get seated/service. Been to plenty of places like this all over so not our first time to this rodeo. The hibachi is fine; prices and offerings like most hibachi places. Good location and nice decor. That's about where it ends. The food was not enough to earn a return visit and our chef was about as into doing his job as some people are about filing their taxes. It was just the two of us at the table so maybe that was cause for the lack luster performance (but then again how many times can you really feign rapt interest in the onion volcano). My experience with Benihana @ Polaris was pretty similar to Dan D's. I've been to Benihana in other cities before and generally had good experiences, so I'm likely going to give them awhile to work the kinks out and give it another try -- and I *am* intrigued by the "endless sushi" for $27 (M-R 5pm-9pm)... But on this trip - we stuck to the steakhouse-side. The place does look very sharp inside, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Service was fast enough, but not so fast that it felt rushed. Our cook, like Dan's, was also seemingly pretty new to the whole teppanyaki routine. Pretty stiff overall, not particularly creative, with just the common shtick - "egg roll", onion volcano, shrimp tails into the hat no open flames either, just steam in the volcano. (As a side note - when did teppanyaki chefs, at any restaurant, all start using the same basic "script" anyway? I remember when the chefs used to be more independently entertaining and creative...) This is the area where I'm hoping for the most improvement, as hopefully things will get looser and more entertaining with practice. The dinner portions were fine, but the food was pretty bland. I had the steak & shrimp combination - the shrimp was good, not great. The steak was cooked properly, but not really seasoned at all, and unfortunately I wasn't crazy about either of the dipping sauces provided. The fried rice (chicken fried rice, by default apparently?) was also pretty bland, and the chicken in the fried rice was pretty lousy. My wife had the chicken entree, and it was much better, so perhaps they use different cuts? The price for it all wasn't bad, but wasn't great either ($3 for the fried rice add-on?). Given the "meh" quality of the food, it's not something I'd rush back for anytime soon. But still... I am wondering about that endless sushi... so we'll see. Until then, stick with Fujiyama, House of Japan, or one of the dozen other Japanese steakhouses that have popped up around town lately... read more

This place is a disaster now. Reservations for 7:45, arrived at 7:30, not seated til 8:55. No server for 30 minutes til I went to get a manager. Manager offered appetizers I'm surprised he didn't charge us for and disappeared. Waiter was the worst I have ever seen. We were lucky to have any refills at all. They tried to pass calamari off as lobster tail on me. I will not return here, will no longer recommend people here and will ensure those I work with and schedule work dinners with never use this restaurant. I think Benihana is something that you have to be in the mood for. And when I say that, I am referring to the entertainment and performance that is part of the hibachi style of dining. I had signed up for the Chef's Table email just before my birthday, so the boy and I set out to see what a $30 birthday gift certificate could get us for lunch. We were seated at a table with two high schoolers and a woman who I think was their aunt or something. I feel bad for our server; one of the high schoolers was strictly vegetarian, and so several minutes were spent trying to find something for her. The aunt only ordered chicken fried rice. The boy and I were also rather non-traditional in our ordering. We shared the steak lunch, a rainbow roll, and four pieces of salmon nigiri. I'm not particularly keen on the whole "show" that comes with hibachi, but I have to agree with previous commentary on the performance. I thought perhaps it was due to being part of a very late lunch crowd, but after reading your Yelp reviews it seems to be a recurring problem. I also have to agree with the comments on value. The steak lunch was pretty measly -- it's a good thing our sushi came first and filled us up somewhat. The server actually did not offer us a sushi menu, but since I had done research on the Benihana website, I knew there was one, and asked for it. The rainbow roll was decent, and the salmon nigiri came with large pieces of fish -- plenty to appease the boy's sushi craving (which by the way he blames on me, having never eaten sushi before I introduced him to it). But back to the steak lunch: it came with a standard salad, a small bowl of fried rice, a similarly small amount of zucchini and onion, and a very small strip steak. We asked for it to be cooked rare; it was crawling in the middle and slightly toasted on the outside -- a sure indication that it was cooked too fast. However, perhaps this is due to the nature of the grill table, and not necessarily the chef? Our total came to just about $36, so with tip, we ended up spending only about ten dollars for a decent sushi lunch plus a bit of beef and vegetables. I definitely wouldn't pay full price for this restaurant, but if you have a birthday coming up, it might be worth signing up for that email list now. If nothing else, you can at least quell your sushi craving for a little while. read more

They tried to convince me that their version of YUM YUM sauce was all i needed to get by... sadly it just made it worse. As I drove into the parking lot at Polaris, I could see a glimpse of my beloved restaurant in the distance, but i pushed on. All modernly decorated I felt optimistic about this place until I made the mistake of ordering that I thought was fillet and chicken and shrimp...u know the Imperial/Shogun at every other place......But no, they gave me something that was beef but was so tough it would have had to be braised before you put it on my plate. This was our first visit. And it was a Saturday night, Homecoming night for most high school kiddos. Considering this, the service and seating was fantastic! Plus, being at outdoor section of the Polaris Mall area is just a fun setting. We arrived without a researvation, put in our name and were told it'd be about 30 minutes. We waited at the bar and had a couple drinks until our table was ready. The bartenders were super nice and we were all pretty pumped and cheering that THE BUCKEYES ARE NOW RATED #1. Oh sorry...sidetracked... The food was pretty expensive. My husband's meal was $36+, but he did get the lobster and filet mignon. After his meal, two glasses of wine, one soft drink, my meal, and upgrading our steamed rice to fried rice, our total bill was $90. That puts it into the "VERY OCCASIONAL" destination as far as our checkbook is concerned. However, in comparison to my recent reviews of House of Japan and Genji, I'd say that they offered larger portions of meat and the food tasted better. If you upgrade from steamed rice to fried rice, it usually includes chicken, but I asked for it plain and the chef served it to me before adding the chicken. If you've been to the other japanese steakhouses in the Columbus area, I'd recommend going to Benihana for comparison. You might find a new favorite! Oooh...Added note, wear layers. The manager at this place is a total jerk. They presented us with two menus during lunch time (12pm) we ordered off the lunch menu but they charged everything at dinner price. When I asked the manager why each meal was 30+ dollars rather than 15 he said because we had to specify which menu we wanted. I literally ordered the LUNCH DUET. We had to call someone out to get our menus and find someone to help up after sitting there for 10 minutes. 3. We got a "new" server, and that is fine I am patient when it comes to new employees learning. But that did not help when she had to leave to ask ever question we were throwing at her. 4. So we ordered food, and it was hard to find something to eat because the menu was just not that appealing. The hibachi meals looked potentially good, but sadly my friends did not want to eat hibachi, and the prices for them were really way to high. I would have been much more satisfied at the House of Japan down the road. So I ordered these California Pops, edamame and tempura shrimp... that was all that looked appealing... what a disappointed. 5. Yes the sushi chef was busy, and was swamped with orders, it did not help that the staff was all over them about getting their food. Than finally when all the food is out the waitress tells us that they actually ran out of the California Pops, so now all I have to eat is some nuked edamame and VERY greasy cold tempura shrimp. I ate is and the dipping sauce that smelled of bacon, was disgusting. 6. Even for happy hour that bill was ridiculously high! We were visiting more frequently for Happy Hour which lasted until 8PM. Since the time changed we've visited less frequently! Now we only drive the 30+ miles to visit Benihana for birthdays and usually do the hibachi. On our last visit, we were a little disappointed. The seating was so crowded, the chef only engaged with one person which made the other three parties feel a little left out. One of the diners made a questionable comment regarding another chef's race which our chef did nothing to deter. While I love the concept, the location, and the food, I wish Benihana would maintain a more professional staff and train them to engage everyone and not just their regulars. Also, a little more 'show' wouldn't hurt either. Possibly a slow night and a new chef. Enjoyed the food otherwise. Server was extremely attentive. read more

Food was fine but service very poor. Very deceptive on up charges. Be careful. Ordered 5 course meal. Server asked if we wanted appetizers, we said no thanks. Asked white or fried rice and our whole table ordered fried. Bill came w $4.10 surcharge per person. Asked manager why and he stated the fried rice is an appetizer. No mention of any upcharge. I travel 4 days a week hosting clients and WILL NEVER enter a Benehanas again with this dishonest practice. read more

Absolutely have nothing negative to say regarding my experience today at Benihana!!! I was skeptical to visit after running The Last Chance for Boston Marathon in Columbus, OH this morning due to a strict diet I keep and my inexperience and usual deterrence of Oriental food. Nevertheless, upon arriving at Benihana's today, our waitress took our drink orders and had our drinks out right away. She could also tell I was a picky eater and made a few suggestions when I was ordering and was very nice and professional about it. I just hate it when I want to substitute sides or order something unusual (like a dry salad and a side of mustard and salsa) and get attitude from my waiter/waitress. However, our waitress was totally cool about it. The food was great too-dare I say it was a perfect post-marathon meal-oh hell, it was killer :). Also, I met up with a few of my old college friends at the restaurant who live in Columbus and she offered to take our picture for us right in front of the restaurant and subsequently printed us out copies of this picture and gave them to us in a Benihana's cardboard frame. Extremely disappointing. They brought out the soup and salad together. Then long wait. The chef was very slow and no showmanship. The rice was cold before anything else was done. We have been here before and it was much better then. read more

I love Benihana and was happy to see they also have one in Columbus! You can't beat going there for lunch where you get the same meal as dinner for half price including fried rice instead of just plain! I always go for the chicken and my husband gets the shrimp and steak. The show is great, the food always fresh, and very good. Most of all I love their salad dressing and dipping sauces! You can not go wrong with a filling lunch and a show for under $15! read more
