Incredible food and amazing service! We're gone to the Pittsburgh location for years and it's our favorite place to go for a nice dinner out or a big celebration. We love the seating and enjoying being around others having a great meal. The dining room was updated a few years ago and the atmosphere is enjoyable. Everything is cooked and prepared just as we like it. The chefs are very accommodating with our requests and the needs of our young kids. Visited today for the first time in a while. The menu prices have gone up significantly and the quality of The food has greatly decreased. We ordered hibachi meals and we were charged seven dollars extra per meal for fried rice! And the meats that we got were very small quantity. By far the worst hibachi experience I've had in the whole city. The food was not good, the portions were small for the price and the service was the worst I've ever seen. Not only did the waitress forget to bring us parts of the meal, she also rushed us with the bills and food. The chef had barely finished plating the food and she was already going around with the check. The environment was also extremely loud, and felt really cramped. As an appetizer I got the crispy rice with spicy tuna and wow was that bad. I'd rather eat the one at Cheesecake Factory! Just if you're looking for a great hibachi experience and good food save your time and go literally anywhere else in the city! read more

I just want to update that my opinion on Benihana has definitely gone down after my visit last night for my birthday. It has changed a lot over the years and I think after this visit - I won't be back despite going at least 1-2 times a year. The only thing great about my visit was the chef (Tommy) was really cool and the meat/seafood cooked well. The greeter at the front desk seemed miserable and not really friendly as you are walking in, the server at our table didn't seem like a people person - both her and the woman cleaning up our area barely acknowledged my guest and I but did with the other young chicks at our table. Were we invisible? I don't know but it was annoying. They usually give you a complimentary photo for your birthday with your guest - we seen them go to other tables doing this but never came to ours as they have done in the past. One of my biggest complaints is the new up charge of $4 for fried rice. No other hibachi place does this (the meal is already high and more than pays for the fried rice vs white). Benihana never had this upcharge before - not sure if it changed this year but last fall it wasn't the case. The quality of food and friendly service at Benihana is what I liked over the years coming here however similar hibachi restaurants will now be my go-to as the service is not what it used to be here and it is more expensive compared to those other establishments as well - Saga, Ichiban, etc. There is no benefit to go to Benihana rather than the others now. The other places also do more tricks and have more of a show than the chefs here - the most they do here is throw utensils in the air and light the onions. Saga/Ichiban makes a train out of food, flickers the lights, shoots sake in your mouth, tell jokes, etc. My tip is to go to any other hibachi but here - where prior years I would prefer it here. They have poor service now, the cleaning staff really had no professionalism, and they have gotten greedy about fried rice. You are already paying $49 for your meal, come on right? How much is the eggs and veggies really costing them? Not cool. read more

I got the hibachi steak for takeout. Tasted ok, not great. Portion size was HORRIBLE. Especially for the price. After eating everything, I'm still very hungry. Keep in mind I'm not a very big guy - I weigh about 150 lbs. so I don't need too much to feel full. My meal came to $41 after tax. These guys are scam artists, do not waste your money here. Everything was over salted, The up charge for fried rice per person was $7.00. Over priced, over processed and they need to turn on the heat. As someone who goes to hibachi restaurants quite frequently, I was excited to finally try the benihana here in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed. We went on a Wednesday, it was not very busy. For one, we waited forever to get our drinks. We never got the hot tea that we were supposed to get. Our appetizers came once we already had our main hibachi entrees (as in, we got soup, salad, rice, meat, etc before we got the sushi that we ordered with our drinks). At that point, we didn't even want them but since they brought them out we didn't really have a choice but to accept them. The food was very mediocre to bad. For one, the portions are wayyy smaller than other hibachi restaurants in the area. I had barely eaten anything before this picture was taken (like a few bites... as you can see pretty small portions). They are also way more expensive (~$38 for steak and shrimp + you have to pay extra for fried rice!?) and no noodles. The vegetables were literally all onion, mushroom, and a small slice of zuchinni. As someone who doesn't like the onions and mushrooms, I was really disappointed in the veggies which are usually my favorite. Some of my shrimp were not deveined. My steak was totally undercooked (I ordered medium rare but it was pretty dang rare) and my fiancé who ordered chicken was served the blandest chicken ever. No season, no sauce. Other places always cook the chicken in a teriyaki sauce. Not this place! They were also super rude about the fact that we brought a birthday cake "We are really busy you know"... yet they weren't. When it came time to serve the cake the waitress even said "oh I can do it I'm not doing anything".. so really confusing as to why they were so rude about us bringing it in the first place. I've been enjoying teppanyaki dinners with my family at the Pittsburgh (Greentree) location since long before it was a Benihana restaurant. Some of my earliest memories are from birthday dinners celebrated at what used to be called the Samurai at the same location, dating back to the late 1970s. Until the dawn of the pandemic, my family used to make Benihana a monthly tradition, but in the wake of the pandemic, we've only dined out twice in the last two years. Both times were at Benihana. A few months back, we cheerfully scheduled a birthday dinner for my wife, and it was the first time we had been to the location since an apparently remodel. I want to point out prominently that the service was excellent. Everyone, from the hostess to the chef and waitress were absolutely lovely and without flaw. The remodel made the place feel a little more modern, but a good bit less authentically classic teppanyaki steakhouse. Nevertheless, that wasn't a deal-breaker for us. What was, was loud 90s era rock music being played over the loudspeaker system. Benihana has often been loud, from the happy sounds of the diners to the happier sounds of the chefs' enormous talents, but all that, combined with loud 90s era rock, meant that I could barely hear myself think, let alone enjoy the company of my family, the other folks around the table, or the chef. Now yes, I'm getting older and my hearing may not be what it once was, but hey, I'm only 51, and my hearing isn't actually -that- bad. And nothing about 90s era rock music says, "fine dining experience". No era of rock music (of which I'm a fan) could. I was also disappointed with the quality of the ingredients used. For five decades, my mom and I have enjoyed the Hibachi shrimp, so let's agree that we have some familiarity with it. The quality and size of the shrimp have both diminished greatly. My mom commented to me that the shrimp felt like the ones you might get in a can at a grocery store, and I couldn't disagree with her. Finally, it wasn't until we were on our way home that we remembered that we were disappointed that a photo in honor of my wife's birthday wasn't offered. I guess the era of digital photos has ended that practice, and I get it, but still, it was fun, and a way we've long since tracked our family through the years. I want to end by praising everyone at the restaurant again. Our chef was truly phenomenal and every we interacted with was lovely. It was just the environment and food that let us down. For the first time, we left, not looking forward to our next visit, as upon further discussion, there may not be a next visit. We came home frustrated and disappointed. Oh did they change from just a year ago! Food doubled in price and quality a zero! Hibachi chefs barely give you the amount of food paid for and their talent AND enthusiasm has plummeted. I will never recommend or patron any Benihana again. Been going for over 30 years. What happened to this place? 5 star ghetto! Sad. Been sick from my first bite. They use cheapest ingredients and oils. Only positive experience was the bartender in lounge area. Without her I'd give one star. Go to little Tokyo. Service, quality, food 20x better. First of all, my boyfriend and I went to Benihana last night, a weeknight. They were horribly slow and NOT crowded. It was dead. There was just the 2 of us and they sat us alone. The waitress wanted to "keep the table open" in case anyone else came. We waited for like 10 minutes and she came back. We placed our order...she asked if we wanted steamed rice or fried rice with our meals, which she said was a "small fee"... and then about 20 minutes later (no exaggeration) we got our salads/soups. About another 15-20 minutes later our chef came. He was really nice and friendly which is the only reason I am giving this review 2 stars. That being said, we got our check which had 2 "chicken fried rice" for $12! We never said we wanted chicken in our fried rice and "small fee" in my opinion is $2-$3. We complained to the waitress as I felt this was a bit sneaky. She came back with an older asian woman who she said was the manager and she took $2 off the check because the added chicken to the fried rice was $1 each. So keep that in mind, if you get fried rice it is $5 something. Ridiculous. Oh and I went home with a horrible burnt smell embedded in my hair and clothes. Gross! read more

I am giving this establishment three stars because the food was not bad. It wasn't fabulous either. I did not get sick. The entire place is in desperate need of a deep cleaning. The carpet was in such bad shape that your feet stuck to it a little bit. The last time I encountered this was when I was in college at a frat house. I am warning you that the 5 second rule DOES not apply here. If you drop it- just let it go! The food was ample but bland. I was also charged 6 or 7 dollars for about 1/2 cup of bland udon noodles. The server was friendly but not attentive about drink refills, he was boxing up my fellow diners to go bags while half the table was still eating and did not offer dessert and left the checks while I was still eating.
