This restaurant is a diamond in the rough! A family run hole in the wall with really really good food. The white fish had a very thin batter and fried crisp and crunchy and the fish was hot, tender and tasty. The Cole slaw was probably better than my own and that's hard to admit. The fries could have been cooked a little more but were fresh cut and seasoned well. Other member's of our party had the pie and said it was wonderful. We stopped by for a waffle cone and went back for breakfast the next morning. So friendly! He had the biscuits smothered in gravy & fresh hash browns. Came here for ice cream on a Saturday night prior to fireworks. The place was PACKED. Even though it was hot and busy (No A/C here,folks) the ladies working the counter were so sweet, funny, and helpful. The prices were reasonable and the ice cream was cold and flavorful. We went there in a Wednesday afternoon at lunch time so it was very busy, and I added one extra star for the benefit of the doubt. We intended to quickly grab two cold pasties to go. It's one thing to be busy, but it's another to ignore your customers completely. We walked in and stood in the middle of the room for 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us, then ordered, waited five minutes, paid, waited another 10 minutes and finally received our pasties. And there was someone who was in before us and still hadn't received their to go order when we left (he was local, but maybe the slow service doesn't bother him?). Most of the staff - save one - seemed outwardly friendly enough, but there was a severe lack of direction. While we were waiting other staff members were kind of aimlessly trying to figure out things to do other than help us. It wouldn't have been so bad if someone had told us that they would get to us in a minute, but instead we were left feeling like unwanted, invisible ghosts. Definitely will never be back. My daughter ordered an Omelette, no toast. My Mother ordered cereal with a side of dry toast. My Mother's toast came buttered. She explained to the waitress she had asked for it dry. The waitress said "I didn't hear you say dry so you will have to pay for another order of toast. She was pretty rude and not pleasant. I told her to bring my Mom my daughters toast and don't charge us. She was angry. She said my did not order it dry... uh ya she did. Folks we are arguing about toast. Toast! read more

We paid the $4.00 fee both ways, just to cross the Mackinaw bridge, so we could eat a pasty from the U.P. Bentley's came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint us. We were told that if it wasn't from the Upper Peninsula, then it wasn't a true pasty, and I'd say that we got one of the best. My wife and I both asked for the beef pasty, since it was made with round steak, and (my, oh my), that was delicious. We had also heard about the homemade pies, and since pasty's are made with a crust, and pies are also made with a crust, these people must be crusty experts. They had only 2 pieces of cherry left, and we got them both. They didn't even ask, but the pie came with 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, and we were right, excellent crust and what tasted like real cherries inside, and was very good. We got our pasty fix. I give this place a rating of five for an overall good job. read more

We had a group of 10 for breakfast here. We arrived just after 11am, but the waitress stated that we could still get breakfast even though it is usually only served til 11am. That seemed nice until she told us that we all HAD to get breakfast. Not so nice. I ordered the steak omelet and added tomatoes to it. FYI, I was charged $0.50 for the 1/8 of a tomato that was in my omelet and wasn't informed of this til I received the bill. My omelet also came covered in cheese, although that wasn't stated in the description. I was able to scrape most of it off though. Decent food, but pricing was a little high for the area. My husband and I both had omelets and a beverage, the total was almost $20! We'll go somewhere else next time we are in the area. read more

Amazing pies and great pasties. Service was timely. Space is very small but very cute. It's a great place to go and see. They have the old soda and malt bar sitting out behind the bar, that they are just using for storage and decor. We got the chicken pasty. They will serve with gravy if you ask, but it didn't need it. It was very moist and hot. It was served with chicken gravy, so I'm sure they would serve the beef pasty with beef gravy. We also got the peach raspberry cobbler hot, with ice cream. Freaking awesome. I don't usually care for fruit pies, but this was so perfectly sweet and tart, and not too overwhelming. I ate half my poor husbands pie. read more

If I could give this place a negative review I would. The service was horrible. They were slow but the staff was so busy chatting that they failed to even notice I walked in. I realize I am not a local but I am friendly and polite. I waited several minutes before even being acknowledged. I asked for sprinkles for my 4 year olds pancake. The waitress purposely used Halloween sprinkles. It is July. Disappointing to a 4 year old to get brown and orange. I asked for a to go order. I thought it was going to kill her to give me water while I waited. I get the bill and she overcharged me by $11.00 and then asked me how much I wanted to tip her. It was some of the must unfriendly rude service I have ever received. Everything asked was clearly an imposition. On top of that the food was marginal at best. Walk down the street. What a find. We were driving around St. Ignace after a day on the island, and we were both looking for a place selling pasties. Apparently that's not easy to find for dinner time - the restaurants specializing in pasties were all closed. So, in the rain, we caught Bentley's sign on State St that mentioned they sold pasties. Excellent! We both ordered a beef pasty, and they were tasty. The filling was great, the crust a bit too soggy... but that was a small nitpick. The real winner though was the dessert - we both got a slice of the cherry berry pie and it was divine - the crust was clearly homemade, the filling deliciously sweet, and the ice cream on top hit the spot. The waitresses clearly enjoy working with each other and are bursting with classic small town charm. This is the kind of pretention-less place that doesn't exist back where I live and it was great to be able to go here. 5 stars all the way. read more

I just left this great little place. I have been coming to St. Ignace for work for 5 years and had never stopped in here. Boy was I missing out. I had a great bowl of whitefish chowder, a very generous beef pastie that was very well seasoned, and a piece of homemade blueberry pie. The best part was that my total was $14.50. It wasn't until we stumbled upon here that I realized Michigan hasn't been misspelling "pastry" on all their storefronts. I had a Pasty for the first time ever! They were tasty, especially with coleslaw & gravy. The real star, however, was their homemade pies in flavors I've never seen before: oatmeal pecan coconut, and ABC (Apple, blueberry, cherry). I was on vacation and stopped by The Garden, a restaurant which sadly doesn't live up to what's written on the building, and asked for pie. The server considerately confided in me that it was 5 days old, and referred me to Bentley's. I was so excited to see the ABC, apple blueberry cherry in a lovely crust with an amazing crumbly brown sugar butter type stuff on top, I promptly ate a piece. As I ate it, I contemplated the rhubarb cinnamon, and, I then ate a whole piece of that. With little or nothing for a city girl like me to eat in St. Ignace, I was thrilled to death to find this pie. I went back day after die, trying the maple oatmeal but ultimately circling back to the ABC. We brought a whole pie to our friends on Mackinac, and, I thought my fellow ferry goers may attack me for my pie! Best pie I've EVER had, anywhere, hands down, in my whole life. My husband, daughter and I ate here recently. My daughter had a grilled cheese, and my husband had a burger and fries, and they both enjoyed their meals. I had the special of the day, which was hamburger steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans. My husband also ordered a side of green beans. When the server brought our meal, she placed a small dish of green beans next to my husband, and informed me that she gave him the last of the green beans. We ate here today. We arrived at 11 am when they stop serving breakfast but they still let my husband order French toast and sausage. It was thick slices of bread and he said very good. I tried the B-M-L whitefish sandwich with handcut fries. I really liked it. The fish was fried but didn't taste like it as they only dust it with coating before frying. The whitefish is fresh daily and so good. Comes with lettuce, tomatoe and bacon on a really great tasting bun. They had malt vinegar for the fries. Yum. Our waitress was super nice and so was the other woman working. We really enjoyed talking to them. We will definitely return when we are in the area again. read more

Had a quick breakfast our first night in town. I had the corn beef hash and eggs which was an instant hit if you're a corned beef fan. Boyfriend had the breakfast pastie. He's my normal biscuits and gravy guy but also likes to try new things. He thought it was acceptable. Enjoyed the gravy on top. Service was quick and friendly. Dinner could have used some work. When we came into the store with a happy vacation mood they welcome us with cold face. No one to came to seat us. Then they throw us the menu we ordered immediately. 55 minutes we finally got our meal. Starving! How could it take 55min for them to cook one omelet, one pasty and harsh brown with scrambled egg? Especially no one to come by to say anything to us. We are sitting by the bar table and they just walk in front of us back and forth like they didn't see us! Several moments I want to go out of the door but my boy he said that's too rude.The people came after us have already left!! 55min of sitting for breakfast in a restaurant it must be great.
