How do I start this review, hum. First off the food here is very good, we always enjoy it, and here comes the discord. My husband and I came in for dinner, at the counter we were asked if we were ordering in house or to go? We said in-house, she pointed to the menus and told us to have a seat. While looking at the menu we were a bit uncomfortable with the temperature of the restaurant and when I went up to order I told her we changed our mind and would like it to go. So we wait, another 4 came in to dine and their meal was brought out before ours by at least 10 minutes. I asked the waitress and she said they serve in house orders first and to go orders last. While I was in college, I use to live at the loft apartments right across the parking lot & I would eat here ALL THE TIME. Mainly because I could get my sushi fix while still being a broke college student I was at the time. I came in at 2pm on a Friday & it was pretty much empty which was nice because I hate eating alone in a crowded restaurant. They let you choose where you want to sit. I chose the sushi bar since I was alone. (It's literally a singles table facing their Tv's, you don't really get to watch the sushi chefs make the sushi). They give you a physical menu to look at before paying, where everything is cheaper than the makeshift menu they have sitting on the wall behind the counter. (They know everyone is looking at the physical copy) When bringing this up asking for a refund they would not refund the money until they called an off duty manager who also argued against the refund for 5 minutes. I've been to Bento Box two different times now, and my conclusion is this: It works great as a casual and affordable college-food option, but I haven't been impressed with the quality of either of my meals. A far cry from the exceptional sushi or meats I've gotten at some of the similar establishments around town. I was most disappointed by the terriyaki I had on my last visit. The flavor was there, but it was overcooked to the point of being so chewy that I literally had a sore jaw after eating it. The sushi I had on a previous visit was tasty but also didn't taste as fresh as it could be. I also find the pricing and constant "half off" deals they advertise to be a little suspect. I had never had a roll with all of the things this one had all in one. I ordered the King Kong roll and it was really good, it had a kick to it because of the spicy tuna but overall it was delicious. Tucked in the F65 (Folsom Blvd. & 65th St.) shopping center, "Bento Box" is a very convenient location for students that attend Sac State as well as East Sacramento residents (such as myself) that are looking for decent quality Japanese food. I've got to admit that I have eaten here at least a dozen times. Reason being is simply because the food has always been dependable and affordable. And what makes this location special is that if you're a Sac State student, State of California/County of Sacramento worker, or a military veteran, you will get an instant 10% off your order! The interior is generously spacious as there is large area to dine with tables that snake across the rear of the building. When walking in, they always ask if the orders are "for here" or "to-go" since a lot of students order their food ahead of time to take back to their dorms. Since my fiancée and I only live about a mile away from "Bento Box", we usually take their food to-go while it is still piping hot when we get home. I've gotten many different items here and one of my personal favorites is the "Bento Special #1" (for $11.99). This includes chicken Teriyaki, mixed tempura, four pieces of sushi, steamed rice, and salad. It's a lot of food so if you decide on ordering this, I'd recommend come here on an empty stomach. I've also tried their Teriyaki plates that have numerous options (shrimp, tofu, sesame, Thai, fish, and many more) as well as their noodles which is sized very generously and are great on those cold winter nights. However, recently we've been coming here for their sushi rolls and the one that caught our attention is none other than the "Lake Tahoe Roll" (normally priced $11.99). However, if you decide on dining here (or taking your order to-go) after 8:30pm, ALL sushi rolls are 50% off! You heard me right, an affordable $6.00 for a very big sushi roll. Oh, and let me tell you what makes this culinary creation special; the "Lake Tahoe" consists of deep fried shrimp, BBQ albacore tuna, avocados, crab mix, spicy tuna, and topped with fried shoestring onions. We have eaten this particular roll not once but twice in less than a week and it is definitely one of our favorites. The consistent moistness of the rice with the crunch factor in the deep-fried shrimp really make every savory bite truly wonderful. I wasn't too thrilled with the fried onions on top (as this was too overkill) but had those removed on our second visit. With BBQ Shortribs (Kalbi), Beef Teriyaki (Bulgogi) and Pork Teriyaki (Daeji Bulgogi) on the menu....it's apparently Korean. My favorite place for Kalbi. Their shortribs have the best flavor of any Korean joint in Sacramento. I've got to amend my review based on yesterday's experience. We came in for lunch and ordered 2 sushi rolls, gyomi and crab won tons. The gyomi and won tons were terrific! One of the rolls (Fair Oaks) was okay. But the other roll (BSC) tasted like plastic. Thinking I must have had something wrong in my mouth, I had my husband try it. He said the same thing! I drank some water and tried one more piece. Yup- plastic. He told the waitress that it tasted like plastic, and she took it away. Then she brought the bill- charging us for the roll along with everything else we tried. We paid the bill anyway, and on the way out another person asked me what was wrong with the roll. This place is, by far, the worst restaurant we have eaten in in Sacramento. I went to dinner tonight there with my spouse and 2 friends. It was not very busy when we got there. My spouse and one friend ordered sushi, which came out in a reasonable time period. My spouse also ordered tempura which came out at least a half-hour later, and it was lukewarm and oily. My other friend ordered a bento box and I ordered a teriyaki salmon bowl, neither of which showed up for at least 45 minutes, after the others were mostly done eating. My salmon was overcooked and rather dry. There were several other items that took even longer to arrive, including one fish dish that the server comped because it didn't come out until we were all done. I know some places are short-staffed but they could have managed this much better by, for example, telling us that some of the items would take longer and asking if there would be other items that we would prefer under the circumstances. read more

Needed a quick fix of sushi and wanted to try out their 50% off all special rolls. We ended up ordering a Blue Hurricane and an Unagi Deluxe (?). The Blue Hurricane was suppose to be a lemon and spicy tuna, tempura shrimp, scallops, and a few other items, but the dish was totally covered (drowned) in three sweet sauces - a junk food overload good but over the hill in sauces. The Unagi Deluxe (?) roll was boring and skimpy, and the rice needed some more su - a vinegar/salt/sugar flavoring. For the 50% off price ( what I think should be charged for these types rolls), the rolls still were disappointing. The tea is not free here either, 3 dollars for a pot of hot water with a mere teaspoons of tea is ??? Ended up spending almost $29 bucks on an average semi boring lunch. I could of drove right down the streets to Sunh Fish Co. and picked up lunch/dinner to go for less than half that price and feed three more people and had for left overs. We would of paid over fifty dollars if it wasn't for the (50%) off price on the rolls.
