On a 2026 January stroll through San Francisco's Noe Valley, I landed inside one of the few community independent coffee houses in the city. Inside Bernie's you will see lots of different plants. You will also see lots of used books on display for sale in partnership with Noe Valley Books which is located across the street. They also serve good bake goods and drinks. I had the maple donut and it was not too sweet and tasty. It was a bit flakey like some I seen around in SF. I had to pair it with the Raspberry White Mocha with almond milk. It was delicious and gave me a jolt. This is the place if you want to have a casual chat or yap with friends and enjoy a hybrid bookstore/cafe at a community based independent coffee house in San Francisco. I dropped by Bernie's on a Sunday morning to fuel up on caffeine and do a bit of reading before heading to Twin Peaks, and it was the perfect cozy spot to hang out. I was greeted by beautiful and luscious plants, super upbeat and relaxing music, and the very friendly and cheerful owner. The owner clearly knows everyone in the neighborhood, often greeting folks by name or asking about their lives / kids / pets. I just grabbed an americano, but I'd love to come back to try their other espresso beverages or pastries. The coffee was tasty and not overly acidic, but the real selling point here is the space. It feels like a true community space and is so remarkably comfortable. They also have a selection of used books for sale, so you might be able to pick up something interesting! read more

I never write reviews, let alone bad reviews, but this place earned it. I ordered a latte, and they asked me how much sugar I wanted in it. How do you explain how much sugar you want? I told them I would like to do the sugar myself. Then they asked me which kind of sugar I wanted, brown or white. I said I was looking for sugar in the Raw. So they made my latte and put it on the counter with a cup of brown sugar and a spoon. I asked for sugar in the Raw and she gave me a cup of sugar in the raw with a spoon and told me not to double dip the spoon (thanks captain obvious). So now I have to get my perfect amount of sugar on the spoon in one try, or ask for another spoon. Meanwhile, I am trying to be as polite as I can, but I'm getting a pretty generous helping of bad attitude by this point. I'm basically being made to feel like I'm doing something wrong for wanting to put my own sugar in my own coffee. Now let's talk about the pastry selection. It leaves a lot to be desired. They had a few choices, including "fresh baked" brownies, or Sydney's brownies wrapped in plastic. I decided to go for the fresh baked, which was a poor choice. It tasted like it was 4 days old, and was probably not even good when it was fresh. The coffee tasted like it was made with moldy unfiltered water. Sorry Bernie's, but if you want to compete, you need to step up your game, and let go of your old ways and pay attention to what other coffee houses are doing. I gave you an extra star just out of pity because it seems like a nice family-run place, but I was sorely disappointed with my experience there. I promptly tossed the coffee and brownie, after paying $13 bucks for them. If not for the treatment I received, I would not have written this review. read more

Located on 24th and surrounded by cute shops, Victorian houses, and friendly people and dogs! We stopped by Bernie's on our weekly Sunday coffee dates and really enjoyed our coffees. We ordered two drinks from their popular menu, the Honey Hazelnut Latte and Vanilla Americano. We got both hot since it was cold outside and sat outside to enjoy it. Drinks were amazing and the perfect ratio of sweet and creamy for me. The staff were also kind and willing to walk through the menu and explain the different roasts they have. The barista actually messed up one of our drinks by adding regular milk instead of oat milk, but she was apologetic and remade the drink for us quickly with a smile on her face. read more

A long overdue review. We used to live next door to Bernies, and it was our go-to spot for coffee every morning. They have all your favorite drinks plus a solid assortment of pastries. Bernie knows everyone in the neighborhood, and you can't beat the friendly service. It is the definition of a neighborhood gem. There are a few tables and wifi inside if you need to get a bit of work done. I prefer working at Bernies over the Starbucks across the street because of the atmosphere and all the dogs that stop by. In fact we donated our kitchen table to Bernies when we moved so there is still a piece of us there. Definitely worth a visit if you are ever in Noe Valley. read more

I later found out "Bernie" was the one who made my Latté and truth be told Bernie has nothing to do with 80's stuffs or even Bernie Sanders, tho Noe Valley hints of progressive;) She's really kinda sweet! Incredible story of how Bernie left her corporate job to open Bernie's neighborhood cafe. "A women's cafe" - super cute spot and trendy floral design. I came to Bernie's ever day for 3 days and each time, we met different baristas, including meeting Bernie herself one day. Each Cappuccino and Flat White we ordered was made just right. The espresso wasn't burnt and the coffee was smooth, made perfectly. The customer service was spot on when we asked about what food we should get (we got the green chili burrito) which candle we should purchase (the Bernie's Brew is a fan favorite so I had to get it). The community seems to love this place too as we arrived at 6:00am one morning and 2 police officers were ordering inside and there was one other person in line in front of us. A great place with super friendly owner who single handily produces your owner faster than Starbucks across the street. Their house coffee is tasty and smooth without the bitterness of the Starbucks brew. Coffee drinks are great too. Bernie's is a definite must try for coffee lovers out there. This place has a variety of choices to choose from with seasonal flavors. Let's break this down a bit: Coffee: I got the white mocha latte over ice. I can definitely taste the mocha in the coffee and it didn't taste watered down which I love. It also had that extra sweetness that I look for. I also got a taste of my gf's honey hazelnut latte. With this latte, you can taste the sweet notes of hazelnut but it starts off with the subtle sweetness of honey and a lingering touch of it in the end of your sip. Not a total fan of honey in my latte but this one may have just made me rethink that. Interior/seating/atmosphere: this place is relatively small in regards to seating. If I'm right, I counted about 30 seats with some tables joined together. So if you come here when it's kind of busy, you're going to be getting to know some people next to you. This place also has that... home-like feeling with a low light (but don't worry it's bright enough to work in) cozy feeling. The music is also not loud like some cafes but it's definitely loud enough that you won't need to put on headphones and listen to your own music. (I personally love their choice of music) Service: the barista & cashier was very kind and ensured that the order I wanted was correct. There's nothing for me to complain about in regards to service! There was a good amount of people but I got my drink in a short amount of time. Parking: alright, here's the kicker, parking here is HARD. Well on busy days. Luckily for my experience, someone was already leaving but you might need to search a bit when it comes to parking. Don't let this derail you! It's a great cafe to go to and parking isn't really in their control. I want to love Bernie's as much as everyone in this neighborhood but I feel like it's a hit or miss with their Hazelnut Latte. I feel like everyone who works here makes it different and some make it great. I don't know but I feel like every time I try this either iced or hot, it's made differently every time. I love how many older gentleman sit outside on a sunny day to enjoy their coffee and how it's filled with a more older crowd than the Starbucks younger crowd. It makes me wonder why they enjoy this place so much and what they order. I also don't like how they charge so much for an alternative milk and how the hazelnut price went up as well. When I first tried it, it was in the $5 dollar range but it is in the $6-$7 dollar range with subbing the milk. That's my only compliant. Bernie herself was working and asked us all about our apartment hunt and gave us insight on the neighborhood. She was so friendly and made us the most delicious coffees! She was very accommodating asking if we wanted milk alternatives and made great recommendations from her menu. We went back a week later to get more coffee from Bernies and to tell her we got the apartment and she was so friendly and kind yet again! Incredibly disappointed and underwhelmed. My bestie and I came here and ordered two different lattes, the honey hazelnut and she had the pumpkin. Both were watered down and tasteless. Not to mention that despite we ordered the same size, her cup was noticeably bigger. The environment wasn't thriving which may be the reason why the baristas weren't the friendliest of people. Didn't even have a chance to order. Ambiance is not inviting even for a to-go order (the lady will make it very clear there is no seating because of the pandemic [it's almost 2025...]). Did not greet us when we walked in and was left to wonder if we would ever be able to order as I was standing at the register. Literally thought I didn't understand the ordering process since I never felt acknowledged (a simple "I'll be right with you" would suffice). When the opportunity to order came they were out of what I wanted. I made a comment that I'm surprised and the lady said flatly "I'm not, it's the pandemic". Anyway 0 for service and friendliness. And unknown for coffee but other reviews seem to give high praise to the coffee here so maybe it's best to stick to to-go anyway.
