The owner is always there to greet me whenever I show up, the staff is kind and helpful, and the atmosphere is relaxed, never pushy. Free wifi! Didn't even have a chance to order. Ambiance is not inviting even for a to-go order (the lady will make it very clear there is no seating because of the pandemic [it's almost 2025...]). Did not greet us when we walked in and was left to wonder if we would ever be able to order as I was standing at the register. Literally thought I didn't understand the ordering process since I never felt acknowledged (a simple "I'll be right with you" would suffice). When the opportunity to order came they were out of what I wanted. I made a comment that I'm surprised and the lady said flatly "I'm not, it's the pandemic". Anyway 0 for service and friendliness. And unknown for coffee but other reviews seem to give high praise to the coffee here so maybe it's best to stick to to-go anyway. Hopefully she can find a way to adapt to the new normal and not say "pandemic" every chance she gets. I felt like I was back in 2021, oh well. read more

Morning sun warms the two leather chairs by the espresso machine in front long before you sit, two adjacent tables if you invited a friend. Walls adorned with local landmarks and architecture black and whites. Inviting atmosphere, local shop and feel, plenty of space to be industrious with your laptop or aloof with your own thoughts. Having grown up just over the hill this place really brings me back. And for that reason and those listed above, I certainly will be back. read more

I much prefer stopping into independent, local coffee places like Bernie's. The vibe is relaxed and the latte I had was delicious. There are plenty of pastries to choose from too. The friendly baristas there add to an overall comfortable place to sit for a while and work or visit with a friend. The seating is a bit cramped inside with smaller circular tables literally placed next to larger tables for four or more people. My only complaint is that it is hard to have any privacy. The place needs a little feng shui. read more

Bernies is an adorable and warm coffee shop in the delightful Noe Valley. I got happy vibes just walking in to this cute shop. I decided to order a Bernie's favorite - the honey hazelnut latte - and they were happy to go easy on the syrup for me. The latte was smooth and the honey and hazelnut flavors really added a nice touch! There was no bitterness, which leads me to know that Bernie and her staff really know how to make FANTASTIC craft coffee. Head over to Bernie's for a lovely cup of Joe amidst a welcoming environment! This coffee house over the last 3-4 decades has been Spinelli's Coffee, Tully's Coffee, and, for quite some time Bernie's I believe around two decades give or take. The regular coffee was very strong in the previous business's. Bernadette/Bernie kept making strong coffee, and I haven't been there in a few years since I don't live in town anymore. However, I went there last week, and the coffee still tasted good, but was not as strong. It seems like everything else people/ businesses cut corners/cost and charging more. I understand things cost more in this day and age, but does that mean compromising the original quality also? read more

I go here mainly out of convenience but the staff is very friendly and it has a nice ambience for a neighborhood cafe. The prices can be high but probably justifiable as a small business in SF (A black coffee and pastry can easily cost you $10). Not a must see place but a recommended stop if you need a break in Noe Valley (much better than the Starbucks across the street). read more

Bernies is one of the best local coffee shops in SF. Great drinks with a wide variety of options, the espresso is nice and strong and balances well with anything. My go tos are iced honey hazelnut latte, caramel macchiato, pumpkin vanilla americano/latte, or a regular vanilla latte. Love their selection of baked goods/sweets and breakfast burritos as well, everything is delicious. The atmosphere is always so wonderful and pleasant, super friendly service - getting to chat with Bernie herself is always like a warm hug. One of my absolute fave spots in the city! read more

Super cute find! Inviting indie coffee shop located in Noe Valley. They have a good selection of plant based milks. I got a mocha with oat milk, requesting less chocolate/sugar. I'm not sure how much the barista actually put in, but it basically tasted like an oat milk latte with a faint chocolate aftertaste. In short he nailed it. The staff was super friendly - another barista offered his iPhone charger when the charging station wouldn't work for me. The comfort and quaintness here imparts a home away from home vibe. I can def see how people who live in the area become regulars here! If I'm in the area again, I will most certainly return. read more

I had a terrible cappuccino from here the other week. It was in a to go cup and I'm not kidding you when I picked up the cup it felt like there was nothing in it. It was mainly just foam in the entire cup and when you got to the coffee it was watered down and bitter. The customer service was nice but they must have just really screwed up my cappuccino. Laptop camper here. I've camped at Bernie's a few times. It's a cozy, busy neighborhood spot in a Victorian building. There are pictures of Bernie and her kids on the wall. It feels like you're in Bernie's home. You might have a hard time finding a seat. It's very popular with chatters and campers. They have a case of pastries (muffins, croissants, morning buns, cinnamon twists, scones, mini cupcakes), juices, cookies in glass jars, calzones and burritos. * Latte ($3.60 for large): served very hot but it's not rich or smooth, it's rather harsh * Croissant: bland, flabby, soft, didn't seem fresh There's a kid's corner with a kid's table, books and toys. The ambience is great and the service is fine. It's a great place to study. However my cappuccino was all foam. Seemed like the barista tried to fill the to-go cup with foam on top of the espresso shot...a true cappuccino is better proportioned than that and won't fill a typical to-go cup. It's all about Bernie. This may seem obsequious, but Bernadette (yeah, her given name happens to be too long for the sign out front) is now pronounced by me to be one of San Francisco's royalty. An order, for the first time, proffered by me in a most Yelperific fashion! Go 'head, Queen Bernie. I love what you're bringin', girlfriend! It's really Bernadette's story to tell, I just happen to be sharing my side of it. Way back in the last millennium, ('twas 1994), I was but a novice SF'ian, a former wanna-be now turned on by a his new, joy-filled reality...and in my new nabe of Noe, there was my fave java dispensary, Spinelli's... I pause after I say the name, because it was a holy spot to me. My favorite, I told you that already... Now it's 2008... Great beans, great coffee. It's that simple, but there's something more...a brain behind it. It belongs to our local Fly Girl, Bernie. She's warm-hearted, deep and fancy-free, the warm, personable Ms. Bernie. I strolled in for the first time with the g'f and Bernadette offered us free pastry. It was delicious, that lemon square, so sweet and tart...and the price was right. I was happy to have been drawn in by the classy, classic sign bearing her name - not to mention the cool colors and warm woods somehow assuring me that I was in for tasty, great coffee. And yes, there was reverie, more than a distant memory, as I approached the counter, I remembered dreams and fantasies of mine that had flown through Spinelli's. No sooner than I mentioned this to smiling one behind the counter, did she tell me that she worked at ole Spinelli's back in the day. And after the owner sold to Tully's, she stayed. Then she set across the country opening Tully's stores for a few years. Always staying in touch with the Spinelli's fella, btw... Sacred, that space on 24th...Bernie put everything she had into ensuring that this would remain a coffee shop...and she's elevated it to a coffee shrine. I dare say far better than ever. Oh my, my reverie has returned...it's warm mochas, sunshine and petting/sharing dogs left in my care by neighborhood friends-turned-Cala-shoppers for just a few warm, happy minutes. Praise Jah, Bernie made it happen. Wi-fi, a great staff, free magazines and a clean restroom count for a lot - 5 stars already! But there's so much else. Up at 4:30 to get the coffee brewed for you. Delicious coffee, laid-back ambiance, free wi-fi, mothers breast-feeding babies (which means all types of milk are available)... The people who work here are lovely, as is the MOST HANDSOME MAN I'VE EVER SEEN studying from a textbook at the table across from me. I'd sit here and drink coffee all day for this view. Bernie's is apparently a local staple, and they offer a variety of pastries and bagels. Of course, they're nothing like NY bagels, but a noobie can't be choosy. I met up with a couple friends for a morning coffee at Bernie's during a trip to San Francisco. It was right near where I was staying, and felt very much like a comfortable neighborhood coffee shop, on a cute, walkable street. The place was pretty quiet at 9:00 on a Sunday morning. It was a nice spot to play catch-up. Service was friendly and there was ample seating. The space was charming, and there were lots of attractive pastries behind glass. I had a lovely cappuccino, lush with milk foam. I gather Bernie's has free wifi, so between that and the warm atmosphere it's more or less an ideal neighborhood hangout. I'm sure it's well loved by the people of Noe Valley. read more

I just had to give a shout out to Bernie and her amazing local coffee shop which always keeps me and my coworkers fueled with the best lattes and customer service. I highly recommend the oat milk lattes if you haven't tried them. I was a skeptic at first but quickly converted to the oat milk cult. A large soy cappuccino and a morning bun will run you $7.25 at Bernie's so it's on the spendy side for a coffee and a pastry. I'm not sure where they get their pastries but I don't think they're the draw - I think the delicious coffee, friendly service and seating are the draws here. While the seating is relatively limited (5-6 tables inside and one park bench out front), it's a decent amount of seating for this neighborhood. read more

Such a lovely place--friendly staff, delicious pastry, and relaxed ambience. Maddeningly, I realized I forgot my wallet as soon as I walked in the door. The barista (owner?) told me I could pay my tab next time. It was such a friendly gesture, especially since I'd never stopped in before. (FYI, they also accept Apple Pay.) She seemed equally nice to everyone else who walked through the door--I definitely got the "small town coffee shop" vibe, where everyone knew and liked each other. I had a small spinach quiche, which was pretty yummy. And the staff were pretty cool about letting me chill at one of the worktables for an hour. They even have a free phone charging station and WiFi. If I lived closer, I would definitely make this my go-to spot. read more

The coffee is average though - kind of bitter, lattes often way too foamy / burning hot, not great cold brew, etc, especially for the price. I ordered an almond milk latte with a spinach and feta french pastry. It came up to a little less than $10. Service was spectacular! The cashier was super nice and friendly--something you don't always get at sf coffee shops. The latte was good and the pastry was also good. Bernie's is the perfect neighborhood coffee place - not just great coffee and great atmosphere, it's about the people who work here and how welcoming they are, and how they get to know you and you get to know them. The service was good. Cashier provided suggestions and the barista was very kind to us. We got an iced honey hazelnut latte and an iced raspberry mocha latte which were under the "favorite" section of the menu. However, the iced honey hazelnut latte was lacking flavor and it tasted mostly of oat-milk. The raspberry white mocha however I would stay clear of! It was very tangy and sour and didn't taste of white chocolate at all. For some reason it reminded me of the taste of mayonnaise almost and I ended up throwing it away.
