If you like warm milk with a slight hint of coffee - stay at Starbucks. If you want an ok coffee with excellent food selection - go to Martha's Bros. But if you want the best cappuccino in the neighborhood, the most friendly service, the best WiFi connection, then Bernie's is the right place for you. I think they make the best espresso drinks, period. The atmosphere is warm and social. There are books for the kids and benches outside. The place has a great character and we are glad to have such a special coffee shop in our neghborhood. read more

I've always thought the Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks is tasty until I ordered it from Bernies's. The rich flavor captures every sensation of your tongue and makes you want to take just another sip before setting the cup down. Great owner, staff, location, venue...and coffee. When I want coffee, I want espresso or coffee. That said, if I'm not making it at home, Bernie's is only place I'd go in the neighborhood for coffee or espresso--and the only place in town I buy coffee beans. They are the best coffee beans in town, roasted weekly, from a very well established and very well respected local roaster. I'm surprised at the critiques of the coffee and espresso because, although nothing can compare to an individually brewed cup (a la Philz) for brewed coffee and beans, there is no question in my mind that you get better quality at Bernie's than at Peet's (which I like) and Starbucks (which I rely on when traveling for a dependably decent cup of coffee). read more

Bernie's is the perfect neighborhood cafe. The coffee is strong, pastries a-plenty and smiles unlimited. They have a little kid area with toys that are educational an actually clean! Best yet, they open at 5:30am so it's the perfect place to go to get your caffeine on when your 1 year old needs to be swept away before he wakes the older kids! read more

The coffee is good, definitely better than Starbucks. I have found only personable person on staff is the Batista, she is a African American woman that really likes people, smiles and makes great coffee (she gets 5 stars) I have gone twice and barely anyone acknowledges you, I get tired of the clique of the salty cranky cafe staff or bartenders, smile life isn't that bad. Especially in the Noe Valley, I expect a friendlier happier staff. read more

This is a long overdue review for one of my favorite places in Noe Valley! I've been working in the neighborhood for over four years and Bernie's has been my go-to from day one. Other than having THE best chai in the neighborhood, Bernie and her staff have always made me feel welcomed and loved and part of the merchant community. I love stopping in for my caffeine and baked goods, but I also love a chance to chat, catch up and soak up some friendly, good vibes. And I've been lucky enough to have some Bernie's staff visit my salon chair and share the local business love. Bernie's is what SF is about, so make them your local favorite this very second! read more

I was pleasantly surprised with how good the decaf drip coffee was here, having been a regular at Philz, further up the hill. They also have delicious biscotti and the frittatas (I had mushroom & spinach) are an excellent food option. The work tables are comfortable, the internet good, and the bathroom is clean. read more

I am so happy to have found this little gem of a coffee shop! It is in a prime location and has a very warm and welcoming vibe. I am currently obsessed with their turmeric lattes with almond milk. I am not sure if the turmeric lattes are seasonal, but I do know they have a variety of unique drinks. I definitely recommend checking this coffee shop out! read more

The coffee is great and everyone that works here is really nice - you genuinely feel like the people who are working there are all "neighbors". It was ok. Service was decent. Love that it is local and chick owned. I will have to try much more to give an accurate review. But for my first time there I wasn't THAT impressed. We were really looking forward to trying it. I will definitely try it again to be fair. But it was really crowded with people just sitting there using the free internet. It wasn't a very warm and cozy place. I was with a group and we didn't really want to sit down and sip our coffee. I am still on the look out for a great coffee place in Noe, but will be back to give Bernie's another chance ( I will update review if opinion improves). Bottom line: Will keep looking for that great coffee place. read more

the only good coffee on 24th. bernie's does not over roast their beans like everyone else. seriously... how can coffee shops not get this right? although starbucks across the street may be consistent product... i simply don't go there on principle. bernie's is cute, social, and has a family feel. there is a definite sense of community inside. read more

One word. Local. The staff including the owner, literally know every single person that comes into this shop and it's so refreshing. Filled with kids (it's noe valley) and parents and everyone in between. Very cool. Prices are good too....it helps that my friend that I was staying with lives above it. 10 feet to good coffee. It was a rainy day so I was hoping to bring my pup in with me. I was on a hunt for a cute, cozy cafe with wifi and that is when I stumbled upon Bernie's. It is a perfect mix of homey and a little escape from the otherwise hectic life in the city. The serene colored walls, mixed with the white molding, dark wood furniture and counter, and track lighting blend perfectly. The staff is friendly, and there are plenty of tables and chairs to settle into. There is even a kids corner with a chalkboard door they can write on and plenty of books and coloring tools available. My only areas of suggestion for this cafe are: 1. Having more and bigger art on the walls would really contribute to a unique, warming environment. There are a few small black and white pictures up, which is nice, but some interesting art would really add to the place. 2. The counter is a bit crowded on one end with regular store bought items: canisters of tea, coffee filers, lollipops, on top of many bottled beverages in the glass case. I love independent coffee shops for their own made items, not for selling grocery items. If they did away with all of this and scaled up their in house pastries it would feel more like a cafe and less like a grocery store. Otherwise, this place is fabulous! read more

Great coffee shop. I love their chai tea and they are very nice. I would love to have more comfortable chairs though. I find their prices are lower than other coffee shops. If I have a choice for coffee or tea, Bernie's is the one I'd go in Noe Valley. read more

Bernie's is now my default local coffee-shop. The owner has set up a perfect environment for grabbing a quick coffee or for sitting down and surfing the internet for 3 hours. I do occasionally cheat and get a soy latte at Starbucks, but the nice employees at Bernie's always welcome me back with open arms. read more
