Brought my car in for some maintenance a few blocks away and decided to check out the local shops around Adam's Ave & Kensington. I came to try the Portuguese egg tarts but they didn't have any out on display so decided to go with the bread pudding and the ricotta tartine and two coffees. Service was great and friendly, the place is small but very aesthetically pleasing, outside seating and best part...dog friendly! Bread pudding was warmed up and had a nice vanilla bean sauce on top, the ricotta tartine was delicious, my buddy usually makes this at home but with Greek yogurt instead of ricotta and fresh fruits but this one was still very good. The bread was a nice and thick, toasted well, and a good amount of ricotta cheese was on each slice. The honey sea salt coffee was good, got it hot but you can get it iced as well, and you can sub oat milk or almond milk for whole milk. Not overly sweet but sweet enough that I didn't need to add any more sugar to it. The americano was a bit on the bland side, came with whole milk which was different for my friend. Loved the outside seating area, there's a little garden in the back and a few tables to sit and hang out while relaxing. Good place to meet up with friends to catch up and hang out. I love Bica! Every weekend or so I like to come and see what specials they have--EVERYTHING they make is absolutely delicious. The staff is great at giving recommendations too (I can be pretty indecisive at times). There's a great atmosphere as well, I've gone to study there a few times already. We got there around 9:30am on a Saturday there was a decent line already formed, but I would say their coffee is worth the wait. We ordered their Cafe De Olla and their Honey Sea Salt Latte, both of which were extremely delicious. Bica feels as much a community space as it does a coffee shop. The line can get long, but the baristas and servers stay on top of orders and often manage to bring orders outside to you (all seating is outdoors, as a heads up). My go-to order is an oat milk cappuccino (never misses) but I also really like their matcha and specialty lattes, too. A friend recommended this spot so I went in for coffee and sat on the patio for a bit. I wasn't impressed. No one greeted me when I came in despite seeing me check things out, and when I ordered soon after, the person ringing me up was quite cold to me. (A tall man behind the counter was friendly right after this and so was the server working the front a bit later in the day). But I asked the person who took my order if the cappuccino came in a smaller size than the latte, just to confirm. I have years of experience as a barista and know what the conventions are, but not everyone follows them so I wanted to know what their practice was. She confirmed that was the case, but did so very condescendingly as if to say "you're unrefined for even having to ask and I'm put off that I have to waste breath on this." There were no options for food or pastries without wheat, so I was limited to the drink menu. The cappuccino did not taste good at all. Their espresso has that bitter fruity flavor that in my experience usually comes from not knowing the best techniques for pulling light to medium roast espresso shots. This is a common problem on the west coast, but I'm not sure why. I think people feel they should use a light or medium roast to follow the trend, but don't have the training to prepare it in a way that complements the delicate flavor profile. The ambiance was nice over all, but the patio needs more shade, especially when there's no indoor seating. The restroom needs a mirror and a hook to hang your bag or jacket on (sounds minor but these are very careless oversights, in my opinion; no one wants to put their jacket or backpack on a dirty public floor. ). The prices are too high. If they must keep them that way, at least invest in another shade, a mirror, a hook, and some gluten free toast (there are many delicious options now). The website, by the way, is highly uninformative. I'm not sure why they're all secretive on there about what they serve or what they call what they serve, but it's pretentious and annoying, not cool or intriguing or whatever they seem to think it is. read more

Really slow service and completely unapologetic for wasting my time I ordered a latte and waited inside. the dude making the drink never called my name and he made it and the drink was right behind him. Seriously there were three people working and they did not do this customer right. I waited 15 minutes before asking for it I was working on my phone and distracted and it was not hot any longer. Went here for the first time today. I'm not a coffee drinker, but got the cappuccino and it was so good! My boyfriend had the cortado (which I had a sip of) and it was just as good if not better. I like the simple vibe of the place. No fluff with the drink menu. The outdoor area is nice and chairs comfy. Good vibes all around.
