As a Jew from the Northeast, I'm super excited that Biederman's Deli is open for business. I've been there 3 times, and loved it all 3 times. The bagels are great (not like the "bagels" you typically find in Austin). The whitefish salad is very good, and the kugel (Google it) is pretty authentic (maybe some more noodles in it though?). I'm giving this place 3 stars because of their Kugel, it is truly a fantastic combination of fluffy eggs, perfectly cooked noodles and plump raisins with a perfect hit of cinnamon and spices. The matzoh ball soup was bland and needed more flavoring and seasoning in the broth and the matzoh ball (Where's the Schmaltz??). The egg salad lacked seasoning although I appreciated the larger chunky style. The potato latkes were also severely lacking in salt and flavor and the applesauce was flavorless. I bought two onion bagels to go, as this is one of the few places I've seen offering an onion flavored bagel and I couldn't wait to enjoy them later that evening. I was extremely disappointed by the bagels, in fact, these were the worst bagels I've ever had. The onion was burnt to the point of being bitter which ruined the entire bagel and the skin was tough like leather and extremely shiny, lumpy w/ no blisters at all, almost like the bagels had been deep fried. They were also very flat, as if they didn't rise properly or were allowed to proof too long, making it extremely difficult to try to slice (also due to the tough skin).It was truly odd, kinda like a very heavy, tough, over cooked donut that someone sat on and then covered in burnt onion. By the next morning, they had become bagel bricks. I know this isn't a real Jewish or Kosher deli, but their interpretation is completely off. read more

Arguably the best bagels in North Austin. Has a good seating area which is a huge advantage to some of the other top bagel places in town. Selection was almost sold out when we went and right after we ordered they got some more bagels. Wish I had known more were coming so I could have changed my order. Maybe they are good on deli part of their business, but the bagel side is seriously lacking. We attempted to get an order delivered from Door Dash today where they had menu offering of one dozen bagels. One dozen bagels is also available and priced on the Biederman's website. When we called to confirm the order with Biederman's this morning, the girl working said she was the only one there and that we could only have 6 bagels at at time, a policy which has also been mentioned by other yelpers. Odd how they offer a dozen bagels on their menu but you can't actually get a dozen bagels in one order. If you are looking to do a catering order in advance, I would recommend Rosen's Bagels http://www.rosensbagels.com/. They don't have a brick and mortar, but they take catering orders and deliver. The bagels and schmear are excellent and the owner is wonderful to work with. They figured out how to provide more than 6 bagels at a time so maybe Biederman's should give Tom at Rosen's a call and figure out how he does it. read more

My review is only on the bagels. Stopped in about 10 am and bought a half dozen bagels in 3 flavors. As soon as I got in my car I bit into one to see what I was working with. Not the consistency I was looking for at all. It did not have the unique bagel chewiness and density, closer to normal bread. We live in the area and Biderman's had become a spot we frequent a bit. For a family, its very convenient for breakfast or lunch and the food is solid, but not spectacular. I hear the bagels are top notch, but I'm not much of a bread guy myself so haven't given them a whirl. Happened upon this cafe today for lunch, and boy am I glad! Very nice atmosphere and great service, but I would go back primarily for the food. Fantastic grilled cheese (with tomato). Crisp on the outside, gooey on the inside. Add chips and a pickle: perfection. Iced tea is also unusually good -- not watered down; you can actually taste the tea. Quaint place with a friendly staff and tasty lunch and breakfast options. Also used to function as a nice coffee shop with WiFi and patio, but they stopped serving espresso drinks. :( Shame but with Epoch opening down the street probably a good idea to rethink the coffee focus. read more

I'm sad to report today as my last day of patronizing this business. I work in the area and frequent the restaurant for lunch. I placed an order for delivery using Biderman's website. Some items were forgotten, so I called about them. Instead of hearing, I'm sorry, can we offer you a lunch voucher or issue a credit. I heard a long explanation of how Biderman's was not at fault and basically, we should have picked up the order in person to ensure everything was received. I talked to a manager and a staff member. One person suggested I shouldn't have a complaint because we received the rest of the order. After finally getting an opportunity to explain that the error wasn't my fault. The manager offered a free treat, a cookie or something. This experience made a stressful work day, more stressful. The team that I work with felt it too. The people at Biderman's are usually very nice. This makes me sad:-( read more

I haven't craved a bagel In years, but a few months ago I woke up absolutely needing one. Googled bagels Austin, wound up here, and I've been back probably ten times since. I can't stop! The white fish bagel and lox are yum yum and the matzo ball soup really tipped my taste buds right over the edge. Great service, relaxing tunes and hot coffee. An honest 5 stars. This is one of my favorite restaurants. If you want great Jewish Deli food, Biderman's is your place to go. My favorite is the pastrami on rye with mustard and a cup of chicken noodle soup. Biderman's Deli has great bagels. I went twice at 7 am when they opened and picked up a dozen bagels each time. That was the limit unless you pre-ordered. They were great. The third time I went to pick them up and they would not sell me a dozen. They said I had to pre-order them or wait until after 9 am. That is CRAZY!!! A dozen bagels is not a lot. I needed them for a meeting at the office. The business world cannot wait until 9 am to pick up bagels. While their bagels were great, I will never support them again. Their business practices make no sense to me. I will go to the donut shop where they are willing to sell me as much as I need starting at 5:30 am. Coming from NY, I've been in Austin now for 20 years and I must say that Biderman's is the first place that comes close to having bagels that taste like they are from NY. The sandwiches are also delicious and don't leave you walking out of there hungry. Here's why I give it only 3 stars and not 5. It is absolutely asinine to me that one can not walk into a Deli/Bagel shop and order a dozen bagels of the same kind of bagel. I attempted to do so a few weeks ago after I had a couple of friends tell me this was the case simply because I did not believe them. When I attempted to do so, I was told just that, "we can not serve you more then 4 onion bagels at one time." Now, coming from NY, this is the most RIDICULOUS policy I have ever heard of. When I asked why, I was told they would "rather have a patron upset over only getting 4, vs. a patron being upset when ordering one and them not having any left". To which I replied, "Um...how about just making more?" I mean, I was looked at like it was a foreign concept to be able to order a dozen bagels of one kind. Hell, I order 3 dozen bagels of the same bagel every single time I'm heading back to Austin from NY to freeze them when I get there. While I was there, another customer looked at me and said, "yup, I'm from the East Side and it makes no sense to me either". In NY, if you run out of a particular bagel, oh well, they ran out of a bagel flavor..you snooze you lose...But to tell a customer that is there FIRST that they just can not accommodate an order like that without 72 hours notice, is just plain crazy to me. It's saying, we don't want your money, your cut off is 4. What if I don't like any other bagels? I said, "can I walk outside and come back in and order another 4 and repeat that until I hit a dozen? Do you see how ridiculous this sounds to somebody?" I have multiple friends that have stopped going here, also from NY that can just not accept this policy and rather now give their business to the new bagel shop up the road. If Biderman's could make this small change, I know for a fact they would gain lost clientele back. They might not care, but I am still astounded that when I did ask management when I was in there to give them a chance to explain, help me understand this only 4 bagel policy? The only response I got was, "we don't want to run out of that bagel and upset a FUTURE POTENTIAL customer". So instead they upset the customer that is there. Sounds backwards to me. read more

Came for lunch with a large group of coworkers. Decor was nice and definitely an upgrade from the previous restaurant New World Deli. Seems like this is as close as it gets to an authentic Jewish Deli in Austin. Place order at the counter and they bring it out to you. I ordered a hot pastrami sandwich along with a couple of other coworkers. 2 of the 4 hot pastrami sandwiches came with toasted bread and melted Swiss which is what I expect of this sandwich and how it comes prepared.. However mine and a coworkers did not. I went back up to the counter and asked if they could stick the whole sandwich in the oven which seems pretty simple. However the teenage kid with blonde hair working the counter said no because of health and safety reason they could not take the food back. OK I get it some I asked if I could just get 2 pieces of toasted bread and a young lady said she would have to go ask the manager... went in the back and never came out nor brought me toast or told me no. Despite this I would say the service was ok could considering our large group and food came out fast. Food tasted ok but nothing special and was a little on the pricy side- $15 for sandwich and chips. read more

I've tried some other bagel places in Austin and Biederman's does have probably the best bagels. I say probably because I've not yet tried all the bagel places that are in Austin. That's part of the culinary adventure. Their bagels aside, there is one thing that should make people pause from getting their bagels here and that is the deli's ridiculous policy of limiting your order of a particular bagel to just 3..............per day. That's right. If you come in and wanted a dozen bagels split between 6 Everything and 6 Poppy Seed, THEY WILL NOT SELL YOU THAT MANY AT ONE VISIT. Trust me. I went in with the intention of buying a dozen bagels, but because of this asinine policy, I left with only 6 bagels. What business on this planet knowingly turns down business for the "greater good", which was the short lecture I got when I challenged the server on this policy. In Biederman's world, the concept of first come, first served doesn't exist. The concept of being able to spend your money as you see fit doesn't exist. Folks, we're not talking concert tickets here; we're talking bagels. And as for the point about one purchase per day, I asked them "what if I come back in an hour and buy another 3 of the Everything and another 3 of the Poppy Seed?" Nope, they will not sell me these bagels because I had already gotten my allotment of the number of Everything and Poppy Seed that I am allowed. If this sounds a bit like Russia, then you're right. After this experience, it makes me wonder if I would be allowed to order 6 of the same sandwiches, or 6 of the same schmear or 6 sodas of the same kind. Biederman's may make a decent bagel, but as far as how to run a business, they still have a ways to go. read more

Being from New Jersey I'm pretty picky about my bagels and these bagels themselves are one of the few better options down here and that's the only reason they're getting two stars. However I have never in my life been to a place where when ordering to go bagels,not scheamered, not toasted, nada, just throw in a bag and go did you have to wait for everyone else getting actual sandwiches before you got your bagels. I waited almost 30 minutes for 6 bagels to go and I wouldn't have been so annoyed if it wasn't for the fact I saw a girl behind the counter taking to go orders over the phone about 15 minutes after I ordered mine getting it ready right then and there while they were on the phone and those people got the last of the bagels I ordered so when they finally got mine ready they were out of the ones I wanted even though I ordered mine well before the people on the phone. Like what the actual heck?l Good bagels but if the service for simple to go orders stays like that I won't be going back to try anything else. read more
