Our first visit here, and it was promising from the start as there was already a line by 6:30 PM on a Wednesday. We came specifically for the grilled catfish, and it absolutely lived up to our expectations--the skin was crispy, the flavor was excellent, and the meat tender without being greasy. Though disappointed they ran out of small catfish, forcing us to opt for the medium size, which was a bit too much for two. The spicy grilled whole squid was another highlight, complemented perfectly by the delectable dipping sauce. However, the fried rice with dried salty fish fell short, lacking in fish pieces. Not quite OC & Lau. There are many comparisons of this restaurant to the great OC & Lau and I can understand why since both serve mainly seafood. We had originally made a reservation for OC but the wait was insufferable (nearly 3 hours). I was craving escargot and I'm glad this restaurant also has it and it was delicious. Unfortunately, the other items we ordered were just ok. The catfish was rather dry and tasteless and the king scallops looked like the size of a raisin. I can't recommend this restaurant because OC & Lau is similarly priced and has significantly better tasting seafood. read more

I think this place is the best Vietnamese seafood place in OC- so much better than Oc Lau / Garlic & Chives in my opinion. It's a super hole in the wall. I went here for dinner and opted to be seated outdoors on recommendation - it is a heated patio and ventilation is better than indoors, but you cannot order beer or other alcoholic beverages outside, which is fine for us. We tried a bunch of oc, aka snails, as well as a mango squid salad and balut. All the food here is pretty good and super flavorful, but with some misses that took away from the experience. We got the Oc Mong Tay Mo Hanh (razor clams), Oc Bien Nuong Bo Toi (escargot), So Long Mo Hanh (clam), mango squid salad, and 1 pc balut. The razor clams are definitely the thing to get as it was fresh and did not have an apparent ocean taste. It is filled with crispy onions, green onions, etc. I really love the chewy texture throughout. One of the pieces had 2 razor clam meats inside the shell, but unfortunately, one of them wasn't cleaned properly and my mouth was full of sand, which was a miss. Otherwise, it is an overall great dish to get. The escargot is delicious too - lots of garlic to mask any flavor you don't like. There is still a bit of slimy texture near the end. You are given some wooden sticks to get the meat out. It is a lot different from the French style escargot where the meat is more easily prepared and you need to do less work. The clams were okay. It was a bit of barbecue flavor but there were a few pieces that were fishy so it did not really sit right with me. The mango squid salad is tangy and refreshing, a break from the oily yet flavorful dishes that we ordered. The balut was pretty good - it was not raw. It is cooked and it is like a salty egg yolk throughout. It wasn't pungent at all. Much like what the other reviews say, this place is like Oc & Lau but without the wait and fairly priced! Upon 5 mins of ordering, our first order came out. We were skeptical if it was freshly made or was sitting for a while but it was very warm, fresh and delicious! Their seafood was fresh and had sooo much flavor. My favorite was definitely their shrimp skewers as it was sweet but savory! Their sweet & sour sweet was a dream as well. The waiters are very attentive even though there are outdoor seating and indoor. Though the tables are pretty small if you do come with a big party. We were looking for a restaurant to take our uncle who was visiting from Korea and he said he wanted to eat good vietnamese food. I stumbled upon this while looking. Its a vietnamese seafood/lau place and it definitely did not disappoint our uncle. We got a spread of appetizers and for the main course the large catfish of course. Our favorite items from here have to be the marinated grilled shrimp, the sweet and saltiness with their spicy sauce is amazing with the hot grilled shrimp. We also really enjoyed the snails and grilled scallops. I think the catfish was our favorite part, from the crispy skin to the soft baked inside of the fish. I will say their sauces for the catfish could be better but it was decent. The service was super accommodating to our table of 6 always checking and taking plates away when finished. The inside is definitely a old school vietnamese restaurant but dont let that take away from the taste of their food. We have gone here multiple times since then. Came here a second time in mid July 2022 with a different group of friends. Since this place was originally recommended for CA NUONG DA GION (Grilled Cat Fish??), this is what we got since it was a favorite of ours to get during trips to SoCal. We had gotten a MEDIUM Ca Nuong in anticipation in ordering other seafood dishes later (because they were so yummy last time!) We had ordered a GOI NGO SEN TOM THIT (Shrimp and Pork Lotus Root Salad) as well. It was a surprising speed where the CA NUONG DA GION came out as another local restaurant usually takes a while from ordering (usually baked). Bien Hen's version was clearly deep fried, a little too hot/long in our opinion. A lot of areas were super hard and super greasy. Clearly NOT grilled. This was actually so disappointing, we didn't end up ordering other dishes as planned... Weirdly their sauces seem "tame" compared to another restaurant as well The GOI NGO SEN THOM THIT (Shrimp and Pork Lotus Root Salad) was good and refreshing, especially compared to the CA NUONG. Service was really lacking this time around. Last time was so good, nice, and quick. This time, all you saw was them buzzing around and ignoring you. Was kind of difficult asking for things. Took a while to get more water refills too. Very sad. Add some rice and noodles and you have a great sharable meal! They have outdoor and indoor seating. It's located in a plaza with a good size parking lot, but it can get pretty busy with a lot of businesses going on. Recommended coming for an earlier dinner For food, we got the small clams, curry frog legs, snails, and prawns. The Prawns were my favorite! Super huge and flavorful. The small clams and snails were good too, but definitely on the more adventurous side. Overall, definitely recommend if you're visiting Little Saigon! Bien Hen was a recommendation from a friend a long while ago but we haven't been able to visit until recently. On our most recent SoCal trip, we came here for an early dinner (around 5-6 PM) so we didn't have to wait. Our party of 4 was seated right away. Because it was July 4th weekend, the only sizes of the baked catfish was large and above. Since we had such a small party and we wanted to try other things, we had to skip on the catfish. Maybe next time! We got a few dishes to share at the table: Spicy Fried Salmon Belly with Lemongrass - this dish was pretty decent but it was a bit overcooked so definitely not a a favorite. I think this was the only dish we didn't finish. Grilled Garlic Buttered Escargot - fresh, yummy, and great texture! While I can't say it's my favorite, I can ay that I did enjoy this dish. It was very light in flavor and very clean. The texture actually reminds me a little bit of conch. Oh it also comes with a sauce on the side that you can dip it in! Grilled Razor Clams with Ong Choi - super delicious and super fresh. Great flavor! The clams had a great texture to them. The texture is similar to the other clams. And I personally really love ong choi! Good to have some veggies. Unfortunately, we did find a piece of hair but our server took care of it really quickly by replacing the dish. Grilled Blood Clams with the House Spicy Sauce - also very fresh, great texture, and flavor is good. It also comes with a dipping sauce on the side that's a bit sweet and sour. Great pairing! Shaken Beef - the beef was very delicious and very tender. I don't think I've had Shaken Beef as tender as Bien Hen's before. The rice didn't really have much flavor so it was forgettable. Would definitely recommend this dish though! We also got a 1.5L tower of Sapporo beer. Would recommend if you are having seafood! The service is amazing. Our server was very helpful when we asked for suggestions. He told us which seafood he recommended because they were fresh. This was my first experience at a Vietnamese restaurant that wasn't your typical pho and banh mi; I must say, I was mindblown by how delicious everything was. Plus, their menu is extensive with every kind of meat and seafood you could imagine. We came in a party of 12, which was great to share. We had two orders of everything starting off with the Mango Squid Salad ($12.99). It was refreshing with the mango. The Shaken Beef ($13.99) and House Combination Special Fried Rice ($11.99) were good, but it was a very small plate like the salad too. We each only had one or two bites of each item. The eggrolls ($9.99) came in 6pcs, but they were pretty big with lettuce wraps to eat with; there was even a shrimp inside the eggroll. Next was all the grilled seafood. We had the Grilled Razor Clams with Buttered Green Onions ($14.99), Grilled Garlic Buttered/Peppercorn Escargot ($13.99), Spicy Seasoned Grilled Shrimp ($13.99) and Spicy Seasoned Grilled Whole Squid ($13.99). All of these dishes were so good, but my favorites were the shrimp and squid. The spicy seasoning they have on both of these were so flavorful with a nice kick of spice. It was grilled perfectly as well for a smokey and charred flavor. Alas, the finale: Grilled Catfish. I like that they have various sizes, but our table had two XL ($52) and wow, it was a HUGE catfish! We were pretty full by this point, but had to enjoy this dish. It comes with all the fix-ins to create your own spring roll. One person in our party has a nut allergy, and they were able to accommodate and provide the peanuts and garlic on the side for us. Always come here with my family and it's whatever. Food always decent but service always suck. Their young workers are lazy and slow. Came here with my family again. Called previously because it's thanksgiving and wanted to make sure the hours didn't change before we spent 30 minute driving there. We were told that they were still taking people in. Default language is vietnamese. Price is def worth the meal, you get full for $60 & most cards accepted. Parking is a little tight though & so is seating, but they do fence off a waiting area. Their most popular is fried catfish ( only had L/XL) around $50, but def looks like a solid meal. It comes with spring roll fixings. On a busy night like this the wait for it was 45 minutes so we didn't get it. It's the dry kind topped with peanuts. It seems a lot of people get it to go. We got other dishes that didn't take as much time. Their dishes are on the sweeter side. The menu has huge variety, there's like wild boar, deer, Goat and frog haha & mostly grilled items (no pho/soup). Fruity sodas. The escargot with salted egg yolk had a decent amount around 15. I ate one with sand in it. It was a good deal, but I would probably get a different flavor. The sauce was more egg yolky than salted egg yolk flavor ( like chicken egg). If you've never had snails, it's the type where you gotta scoop & pop with a skewer. I really liked the mango squid salad. It had the perfect tangy, slight sweet and spicy taste. The squid was cooked without being too rubbery & everything mixed well. The oysters had good flavor and aesthetic ( mostly fried onion), but the meat was very small w/ heavy shells so I wouldn't recommend it. Vietnamese family style meal for a reunion with my former classmates and our favorite professor. It's crazy how we saw each other every weekday that year and now we have to plan in advanced for half of the old crew to meet up. Bien Hen specializes in seafood dishes. They are located in the same plaza as Ngu Binh and Kamala Flowers. The primary reason this spot was selected since it met the parameters our professor was comfortable with for pandemic risk mitigation -- having outdoor seating and open for lunch. The service was really nice and patient as I waited for my group to arrive. If my group is reading this, I hope they know I'm calling them out for being 5 min, 7 min, 10 min and two at 30 min late. Vietnamese people!!! *shake my head* Even after the whole party arrived we kept chatting away catching up on old times so when they tried to take our order we were super not ready. Oops. Everyone went for their Tra Da ($4.50), or iced teas, which were unsweetened and regularly refilled in decent intervals. The dishes we ordered were strategically easy to share. Tom Xao Dac Biet ($13.99) - House special stir fried shrimp. Good flavoring. The head and shell are attached and you just eat the whole thing. Not recommended if you like your shrimps peeled. Ngheu Hap Sa ($12.99) - Clams steamed with lemongrass. My picture didn't do this justice on portion size. There was actually like 9-10 clams in there. I did not get the lemongrass flavor in the clams but I enjoyed the ginger sauce on the side that the clams were served with. Muc Chien Don ($11.99) - The description is fried squid but this was more like a batter dipped and fried squid. For Vietnamese style cooking in retrospect we would have been better off with the grilled squid next time. Still a fun easily shareable item, served with a sweet and sour on the side. Goi Ga Bap Chuoi ($12.99) - Banana flower salad with shredded chicken. Super flavorful with a variety of supplementary vegetables and garlic chips and topped with shrimp chips. It was over dressed but extremely tasty. Oc Mong Tay Nuong Mo Hanh ($14.99) - Grilled razor clams with buttered green onions. Nuong mo hang is the style with the grilled + butter green onions. Highly recommended when you see this on the menu. That butter and green onion combination is just so tasty. Ca Nuong Da Don ($44.99/large) - Fried Catfish!! Served with rice paper, a variety of vegetables, vermicelli and dipping sauces. This is actually really good value for the fried catfish since I usually go to Nam Giao and pay $60 for their medium one that's smaller than this one. The fish is just very slightly better at Nam Giao and Favori but this place wins on pricing and I'm satisfied enough. Accepts credit card. Automatic 16% tip included for our large party. My group of 6 had a wonderful time for a full on splurge meal at only $144.87 with tax and tip. What a win of an adventure. Cheers to many many more to come. read more

I know this is more of a seafood "nhau" place but I was dying for some family style dinner. I've had their seafood here before. My go to place is currently closed so gave this place a try. Ordered clams with basil, rau muon xao toi, cha ca thi la, canh bau and ca kho to. Clams were ok. Not as good as the ones you get at Chinese restaurants. Rau muong xao was ok and portion is felt too small for the price. Cha ca chien thi la looked too brown and instead of golden but flavor was not bad. Came with some type of reddish sriracha mixture dipping sauce and my daughter and I agreed it doesn't go well with it. Better to eat it alone. Ca kho to was ok too. What was disappointing was they left the skin/peel in the bau and I'm not keen on that texture. I can eat the skin if it was steamed but since it was sliced pretty small and brought out not fully cooked, skin tastes undercooked to me. Don't worry, the flesh will be fully cooked if you let it sit for a bit. What kinda of shook me was the total. With rice added, fresh coconut and taxes, my total was $105 minus a small change. That's quite pricey. In terms of service, my water and coconut was the LAST thing to come out, after we've already started eating. ‍ We asked for to go containers and got flat containers for soup and clay pot catfish ‍. So this place is just like Oc & Lau but without the wait! They have a lot of similar menu items. I was kind of surprised for all that we ordered the bill was only about $85 which to me is pretty cheap but then again there is so much competition in OC that their prices are incomparably inexpensive to here where I'm from in San Diego. We got the house stir fry razor clams. I was expecting it to be like a wet glutinous stir fry like similar to lard nar sauce but surprisingly their house sauce was really good. Their fish sauce chicken wings were my least favorite. Their flavoring was too sweet for my likings and it tasted really boring. Their house grilled whole squid was just okay as well. It did come with a green dipping sauce on the side which my son liked. We surprisingly ordered the catfish wrap which has everything your typical Vietnamese wrap would have. It's good and the fish was actually a big size for the price which I believe was only $30-35?! Huge portion! But their sauces could really use a lot of work! They were too fishy too much mam nem. If you're an SD native and have had Phuong Trang's sauce then you tell me what you prefer. We came on a Saturday evening with plenty of parking and no wait so that was really nice! Bomb food! Was in the so-cal area and decided to dine here for an early dinner around 5pm on a weekday. Ordered their famous catfish spring rolls and it was super delish and aromatic! Had to wait a good 25 minutes for the fish to be prepped, but definitely worth the wait. Lots of spices were used to bring out the flavor of the fish and it was grilled to perfection! We ordered a medium-sized fish and it was enough to feed 4 adults. Also comes with fresh produce and vermicelli noodles. They were nice enough to bring out extra produce when we were running low! Also tried a few of their clam dishes and they are bomb! I seriously think this place is way better than OC & Lau, imo. Pricing is also reasonable and not over inflated compared to other restaurants in the area. The restaurant was full and there was a crowd of 15+ people waiting out front. Tried the snails in coconut sauce, grilled quail, mango salad with squid, razor clams with grilled onions and giant prawns with noodles. Every dish was good but I am so hooked on the snails in coconut sauce! They were even fun to suck out with a satisfying "pop"! Come casual, as the prawns, clams and quail requires getting down and dirty! So delicious, can't wait to come back and try more dishes off their massive menu. read more
